    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

NFL receivers who were targeted the most in Week 1:

    19— Julio Jones, Atl

    17— Michael Thomas, NO

    16— Antonio Brown, Pitt

15— Landry (Mia), Tate (Det), Beckham (NYG)

    13— Gordon (LAC), Davis (Tenn)

    12— Thielen (Minn), Cook (Oak)

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

    13) How do you handicap Week 2 NFL games; how much weight do you give to Week 1 games? In weeks 2-3 you have to make a leap of faith to believe what you just saw. Once you’ve seen three games, then you can start making some judgements.

    — Are the Jets as the good as they looked? Tampa Bay? Baltimore?
    — Is Detroit as awful as it looked? New Orleans? Buffalo?

Thats what makes handicapping so interesting, taking the next step when you’re not sure if you’ll be stepping on solid ground or quicksand.

    12) Brewers 5, Cubs 1— Curtis Granderson had a homer, triple for Milwaukee, which is only a game behind Chicago in the NL Central.

    11) Mets 13, Marlins 0— Start of scheduled doubleheader was delayed by rain for over five hours; they only played one game, will play twinbill today instead.

    10) Lot of people complain about the DH, but it isn’t going anywhere; DH’s make lot more money than the average guy (think Pujols, Victor Martinez, JD Martinez), so the players’ union ain’t never going to agree to get rid of it. Forget about it.

    9) Dodgers are 79-67 this season, but 1-6 against the Cincinnati Reds, 2-4 against the Marlins, which isn’t good when you’re trying to make the playoffs. Have to beat up non-contenders.

    8) Edwin Encarnación is the only player with 30+ HRs in each of the last seven seasons.

    7) It is important to take statistics in context:
    — Jacob deGrom is 8-9, despite having a 1.71 ERA
    — Lucas Giolito is 10-10, with a 5.76 ERA.

    Go figure.

    6) NFL teams averaged 5.39 yards per play in Week 1; the league averaged 5.29 ypp LY.

    5) NBA season isn’t all that far away; Russell Westbrook had knee surgery recently, will be evaluated again in about a month.

    4) From 1920-2017, Cleveland Indians had only two games where they had only one hit with that hit being a home run- Jose Ramirez has done it twice himself this season.

    3) Colorado Rockies are 22-4 in last 26 games started by Freeland or Marquez.

    2) I was surfing thru NBA.com yesterday; they have a page dedicated to “hustle leaders”, tracking loose balls recovered, deflections, and “screen assists”, which I assume are hoops scored because the scorer came off that person’s screen.

As a former college basketball manager, stuff like this makes me smile, because the little things these statistics track are the stuff that make the big things happen.

    1) If the baseball playoffs started today (they don’t):
NL: Atlanta-Chicago-Colorado. Wild Card: Cardinals @ Brewers
    AL: Boston-Cleveland-Houston. Wild Card: A’s @ Bronx

                Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                Streaking:
Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins (2-0, 0.75 ERA, $267)

What is this? A Miami Marlins starting pitcher in our Streaking section? It's been a while.

Granted, it's only been two starts in 2018 for right-hander Sandy Alcantara, but those two starts have been great. Heading in to his third start of the season Alcantara owns a win/loss record of 2-0, an ERA of 0.75, and a WHIP of 1.0833. Walks have been a minor issue with 7 BBs in 12 innings of work, so he'll have to get that situation under control.

Alcantara gets the start opposite Steven Matz in Game 1 of today's doubleheader in Queens between the Marlins and Mets.

                Slumping:
Stephen Gonsalves, Minnesota Twins (0-2, 11.68 ERA, $-48)

Stephen Gonsalves is the top pitching prospect in the Minnesota Twins' organization, but Twins fans have yet to see the starter they were promised. Tonight will be Gonsalves' fifth start since getting the call to the big club back in mid-August and he has yet to register anything even resembling a quality start. The left-hander is currently 0-2 with an ERA of 11.68, a WHIP of 3.00, and an incredible opponent's on-base percentage of .528.

Somehow, Gonsalves and the Twins are -120 road favorites tonight in Kansas City against Heath Fillmyer and the Royals. This doesn't say much for the 2018 Royals.

                Windy In D.C.

There will be a 12-13 mile per hour wind blowing in from right field this afternoon when the Nationals host the Chicago Cubs at Nationals Park in D.C.

Today marks the return to the Nationals' rotation of Joe Ross who underwent Tommy John surgery a year ago. In his return he will face a banged-up, slumping Cubs' roster that is averaging only 2.8 runs per game over their last five and tends to be very streaky on both the good side and the bad. Big lefty Mike Montgomery gets the ball for the Cubs and he's been very solid on the road with an ERA of 3.43 this season in 63 innings.

The smart lean tonight in on the Under 9.5 (-125) full game with a sprinkle on Under 8.5 at +120.

                Angel Gets His Wings

We already talked about tonight's game between the A's and Orioles in our Double-Play Picks but it's worth pointing out that Angel Hernandez will be calling balls and strikes and he's been a solid Over umpire this season at 15-11, including Overs in seven of his last nine games in pads.

With the expectation that the A's will dominate and hammer Dylan Bundy tonight, they could go over the full game total of 9 (+100) by themselves. Definitely take a look at Over on Oakland's team total of 4.5, but you'll have to pay a premium at -145.
                Pitcher's Duel In St. Louis

Tonight's game in St. Louis between the Cardinals and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers features a great pitching matchup between Clayton Kershaw and Austin Gomber.

We are all well aware of Kershaw's awesomeness. His fastball velocity is down slightly this season, but "The Claw" is a pitcher not a thrower - he is currently on a streak of 12 consecutive quality starts heading into Thursday's outing. On the other side, lefty Austin Gomber gets the call for the Cards and he has been tremendous since joining the St. Louis rotation. In his last six starts he owns a very solid ERA of 2.06 and a decent WHIP of 1.3143.

We're looking strongly at the full game Under 7.5 (-105) and Under 4 (-115) for the opening five innings.
