    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Top 6 picks in the Westgate SuperBook NFL handicapping contest (3,123 entries)

    1) Bengals +3 (1,218)- W

    2) Rams -4 (1,052)

    3) Ravens -7.5 (907)- W

    4) Vikings -6.5 (854)- W

    5) Texans +6.5 (848)- L

    6) Broncos -3 (807)- T (3-1-1)

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's Den: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Packers 24, Bears 23— Epic comeback by Green Bay, which trailed 20-0 with 4:00 left in the third quarter; Aaron Rodgers left the field on a golf cart in the first half with an injured knee, his backup threw a pick-6 that gave Chicago a 17-0 halftime lead, but then Rodgers came back and led the Packers to a memorable win in this ancient rivalry.

When Chicago went ahead 10-0 in the second quarter, it was the first time they led Green Bay by 10+ points in any game since 2007— these teams play twice a year. Just a horrible way to start a coaching tenure for new Bears’ coach Matt Nagy, but they did look like an improved team.

Moving forward, Rodgers does seem to have a fairly significant knee injury, but also looks like he can play through it.

Buccaneers 48, Saints 40— Think Jameis Winston enjoyed this game? Bucs averaged 14.9 yards/pass attempt, had 31 points at the half and cruised to a divisional road win, handing Saints their fifth Week 1 loss in a row. There is a now a pretty good chance that Ryan Fitzpatrick will still be the starting QB when Winston’s suspension ends.

Three of Tampa Bay’s TD’s were on plays of 36+ yards; Saints threw 45 passes, ran the ball only 13 times. Drew Brees averaged 9.4 yards/pass attempt- not too shabby.

Ravens 47, Bills 3— If owned the Buffalo franchise, I’d damn sure want to know why we traded Tyrod Taylor, since the Bills made the playoffs last year for the first time in 19 years. This was a hideous performance on a dismal, rainy day— Nathan Peterman was 5-18 for 24 yards in this game- he might be the worst NFL QB since the strike replacement games in 1987.

If I was Colin Kaepernick’s lawyer, when his collusion trial starts we’d show video clips of Peterman starting an NFL game to show that there is collusion against Kaepernick ever suiting up again in the league.

Steelers 21, Browns 21— Speaking of Tyrod Taylor, he rallied Cleveland back from down 21-7 in 4th quarter to tie this game with 1:58 left on a rainy day by Lake Erie. Browns had FG blocked at end of overtime that would’ve won game, but this is only 2nd time in 20 years that Cleveland didn’t lose its season opener.

As for the Steelers, James Conner ran ball for 135 yards and two TD’s, caught five passes for 57 yards, as Le’Veon Bell’s leverage shrunk considerably.

This was the first NFL tie in Week 1 since Dolphins-Broncos in 1971.

Bengals 27, Colts 23— Bengals salted away this game with an 83-yard fumble return for a TD when Colts had completed a pass inside the Cincinnati red zone in the last minute.

Colts converted 11-17 on 3rd down; they picked off a Dalton pass on the first series, took over on the Cincy 9-yard line, but turned ball over themselves. Indy had 53 pass plays, 22 runs— I’m guessing that Frank Reich wants a more balanced offense than that.

Vikings 24, 49ers 16— Niners turned ball over four times (-3) as Garoppolo loses for first time in eight NFL starts- he completed only 15 of 33 passes. SF had ball in red zone four times, scored only 13 points. Vikings scored on a pick-6.

Jaguars 20, Giants 15— You think Tom Coughlin enjoyed this win? Jacksonville led 13-6 at half, then did nothing but punt in second half; their one 2nd half score came on a defensive TD. Giants’ rookie RB Barkley scored their only TD on a 68-yard run. Beckham caught 11 balls for 111 yards but no TD’s.

Patriots 27, Texans 20— New England started 11 of its 13 drives 75+ yards from end zone, lost field position by 10 yards, turned ball over three times (-1), but scored 24 yards on four red zone drives. Texans completely only half (17-34) their passes, averaging 4.3 yards/attempt.

Eagles 18, Falcons 12— Atlanta had ball in Philly’s red zone five times Thursday night, scored a total of 9 points- they lost despite a 13-yard edge in field position, which doesn’t happen much.

Philly had three red zone drives, scored 18 points. Eagles scored on three of their four drives that started outside their own 25- they scored zero points on the five drives that started 75+ yards from the goal line.

Dolphins 27, Titans 20— This game had two weather delays, took almost seven hours to play; game was 10-3 after the third quarter, so if you bet under, it was a long, miserable afternoon. Both teams returned a kickoff for a TD in the 4th quarter.

Miami won despite scoring only six points on four drives that started in Tennessee territory. Titans’ QB Mariota got hurt; former Jags’ QB Gabbert took his place.

Chiefs 38, Chargers 28— Patrick Mahomes was 15-27/256 passing with four TD’s, as Chiefs beat the Chargers for the 9th straight time. Tyreek Hill caught seven passes for 169 yards and two TD’s— he also had a 91-yard punt return for a score.

Mahomes was the 10th pick in the 2017 Draft; think the Browns would like to have taken him with the first pick?

Broncos 27, Seahawks 24— Denver/New England both turned ball over three times and won Sunday; that doesn’t happen a whole lot. Seattle turned turnovers into short TD drives of 15, 41 yards- they were outgained 470-306, had only 13 first downs. All three of Denver’s TD drives were 75 yards long- they had seven plays of 20+ yards, and 25 first downs.

Panthers 16, Cowboys 8— Former Dallas WR/current free agent Dez Bryant trolled Cowboys on social media after this game, which should really help him catch on with a new team. Rookie kicker Maher missed a 47-yard FG; the old kicker Dan Bailey hasn’t signed wth a new team yet.

Total yardage in this game was 293-232, Carolina; Panthers won field position by 17 yards. Teams combined to convert only 6-23 on third down.

Redskins 24, Cardinals 6— Washington led 21-0 at half, outgained Arizona 429-213, as Alex Smith won his Redskins’ debut and improved his career W-L record to 89-62-1. Washington ran ball for 182 yards, threw for 247— pretty good balance.

            Rays Up

The Tampa Bay Rays have been red hot lately, winning eight of their past 10 and 16 of the past 19 overall. Unfortunately, they're in the same division as the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, so their path to the division title is clearly blocked. They're 14 games over .500, but still eight games back of the Oakland Athletics for a postseason spot with just 20 games remaining. In other words, they're still mathematically alive, but they're on life support. They're a dangerous team no one wants to face, including the Cleveland Indians. The Rays took two of three from the Indians from Aug. 31-Sept. 2 in Cleveland, including a game started by RHP Diego Castillo against RHP Carlos Carrasco as a +190 underdog last Sunday.

RHP Corey Kluber will take the ball for the Indians, and he is looking to stay hot. The Indians are 13-4 in Kluber's past 17 starts against American League East Division clubs. In addition, the Tribe is 23-9 in the past 32 road starts and 36-16 in his past 52 while working on four days of rest. The Indians are also 7-1 in his past eight starts on Monday, for whatever that's worth. Cleveland is also 20-7 in his past 27 starts when opening up a new series. The Indians have won 17 of their past 22 overall on the road against right-handed starting pitchers, too, while going 5-2 in their past seven tries on astroturf.

For the Rays, they're 20-7 in their past 27 against teams with a winning record, as they refuse to lose. They're also 19-7 in the past 26 against a right-handed starting pitcher while going 23-7 in their past 30 at Tropicana Field vs. RHP. The team has been hot when Castillo is on the hill, too, going 5-0 in his past five starts, including 4-0 in his past four against teams with an overall winning mark. The Rays are hot against AL Central foes, too, going 6-1 in the past seven, while going 14-3 in the past 17 at home against teams with a winning road record. The 'over' has been the play for both of these teams lately, too, going 7-1 in Kluber's past eight road starts and 17-7-1 in his past 25 outings overall. The over is 4-0 in the past four overall and 5-1 in Tampa's past six at home vs. RHP.

            Looking Ahead

            Monday, Sept. 10

The Marlins will face the Mets at CitiField, and Miami is well rested after being rained out on Sunday. They could use the rest, as they're 3-8 over the past 11 games, including 0-4 in the past four games. The last time the Marlins were successful on the road was Aug. 19 in Washington. Miami heads into the battle 7-16 across the past 23 inside the division, and they're 1-5 in the past six tries against teams iwth a losing overall record. For the Mets, they're also playing out the string. However, they have come alive inside the division, winning six of their past eight tries against NL East foes. New York is also 9-2 in the past 11 vs. RHP and 6-2 in their past eight at home against righties. The 'under' has hit in six of the past seven meetings at Citi Field, and 6-2-2 in the past 10 meetings in this series.

The Pirates and Cardinals square off at Busch Stadium II in a good pitching matchup between RHP Trevor Williams and RHP Adam Wainwright. St. Louis is hanging around in the playoff picture, while the Bucs have won five in a row and would love to play spoiler to their division mates. The Pirates have won four of the past five inside the NL Central, but they're a dismal 3-9 in their past 12 against teams with an overall winning mark. They're also 3-8 in the past 11 road outings vs. RHP. The Cards have won 21 of the past 30 overall while winning 16 of their past 23 vs. RHP. The under has been the overwhelming trend for both of these teams lately, going 19-6-1 in the past 26 for Pittsburgh and 13-6 in the past 19 for St. Louis. the under is 4-0 in Williams' past four road outings and 15-5-1 in the past 21 inside the Central. The under is 3-0-1 in Waino's past five outings and 8-2-1 in the past 11 at home vs. RHP.

St. Louis has won five of the past six with Wainwright on the hill against Pittsburgh while going 10-1 in the past 11 home starts against the Bucs. The under has hit in four straight in this series and is 4-1-1 in Williams' past six outings against the Cards, too.

The Braves will use LHP Sean Newcomb opposite rookie RHP Dereck Rodriguez in a good pitching matchup in the series opener in Frisco. Atlanta has been red hot on the road against RHP, winning eight of their past nine. They're also 14-4 in their past 18 against teams with a losing record. They have won eight of Newcomb's past 10 against losing clubs, too, including a perfect 6-0 in the past six road starts aginst teams with a losing overall mark. The Giants are 1-4 in D-Rod's past five outings, and 1-4 in his past five at home, too. Pudge's son appears to have hit the wall after a great start to his rookie campaign.

            Weather Report

After a soggy weekend it appears the weather should be rather favorable on Monday. The Nationals and Phillies face a 30 percent chance of rain, but they should be more than fine. For the Marlins-Mets, that might be the only game with a decent chance of a delay. The forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of rain, but there is a 100 percent chance most fans wouldn't miss it if this game is never played. All other MLB venues look pleasant.

            Tuesday, Sept. 11

The Blue Jays and Red Sox will square off at Fenway Park as LHP Chris Sale toes the slab. Toronto has been horrendous against lefties all season, and they're 6-25 in the past 31 vs. LHP. They're also just 1-5 in the past six inside the division, 2-8 in the past 10 on the road and 1-6 in the past six inside the division. Aaron Sanchez has been competitve, however, and the Jay have been winners in six of his past seven outings while going 4-1 in his past five on five days of rest. The Red Sox have won seven straight starts with Sale on the hill, while going 4-0 in the past four against AL East clubs. They're also 22-7 across his past 29 outings against teams with a losing record. Boston is 13-6 in the past 19 starts by Sale at home, too.

The Brewers and Cubs continue their key NL Central series at Wrigley Field with RHP Jhoulys Chacin squaring off against LHP Jose Quintana. Milwaukee has been hot lately against southpaws, winning six of their past seven vs. LHP. They're in great shape when Chacin is pitching lately, too, as they're 4-1 in the past five road outings with the righty. They're also 18-8 over his past 26 starts and 7-3 in his past 10 starts against teams with a winning record. The Brewers have struggled with him on the hill against divisional foes, however, winning just twice in his past eight tries. The Cubs are 11-4 in their past 15 vs. RHP and 16-5 in Quintana's past 21 at Wrigley Field. The Brewers have won five of the past seven meetings with the Cubs, although Chicago is 5-1 in Q's past six against the Brew Crew.

The Braves will look to keep the Giants down, turning to RHP Mike Foltynewicz. They're 14-4 in their past 18 games against teams with a losing record, including five of Folty's past seven starts against losing sides. However, the Braves have dropped each of his past four outings and six straight against NL West foes. The Giants entered the new week on an eight-game losing streak, while going 0-5 in the past five vs. RHP. San Francisco has also failed in seven straight against teams with a winning record. The under has cashed in 13 of the past 16 for Atlanta against teams iwth a losing record, and the under is 4-1 in the past five starts by Foltynewicz against NL West clubs. The under is also 5-0 in the past five on the road against a team with a losing record.

                  Monday, September 10

                  STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

                  Streaking:
Trevor Williams, Pittsburgh Pirates (12-9, 3.15 ERA, $336)

Trevor Williams must be on a great run right now to be flagged as our Streaking Starting Pitcher on a day that also has Jacob deGrom on the board - but here we are. Over his last nine starts for the Pirates, he owns a team win/loss record of 6-3, an ERA of 0.66, and a WHIP of 1.061 - and the Under has cashed in all nine games.

Williams will look to keep the good times rolling this evening as a +120 road underdog against Adam Wainwright and the host St. Louis Cardinals.

                  Slumping:
Francisco Liriano, Detroit Tigers (4-9, 4.90 ERA, $-1,200)

It must be tough to be an effective starting pitcher with a rebuilding team. That's exactly the situation that veteran lefty Francisco Liriano finds himself in, and he isn't exactly excelling in that role. Liriano is traditionally a very streaky pitcher and he's in the midst of a bad streak at the moment. Over his last five starts he owns a win/loss record of 1-3, an ERA of 7.17, and a WHIP of 2.0625.

Liriano gets the assignment tonight at home as a massive +285 underdog against Justin Verlander and the visiting Houston Astros.

                  Stormy New York

The forecast in Queens is calling for rain for most of the day, but there is a slight chance of the wet stuff stopping this evening. If the rain does stop long enough to get the game in tonight between the Mets and the visting Nationals, there is a 15 mile per hour wind in the forecast blowing in from right field.

In the Double-Play Picks section above we are riding the deGrom first five inning train, once again. However, with the wind blowing in and deGrom on the mound don't hesitate to take the full game Under 7 and the Marlins team total Under 2.5.

                  Mile High Under

The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Colorado Rockies combined for 15 runs yesterday afternoon to go against the Rockies' current streak of Under results at Coors Field. With last night's Over, the Under is now 25-8-1 in the last 34 games at Coors and we expect that trend to get back on the winning side tonight with the Arizona Diamondbacks in town.

The visitors will send Zack Godley to the mound and he comes in with a very good history in the Mile High City. In three career starts at Coors Field, Godley owns a team win/loss record of 3-0 with an ERA of 2.89 and a WHIP of 1.125. German Marquez gets the home start for the Rox and the Under has cashed in his last eight starts overall and he, like most of the Rockies' starting rotation, has been pitching great at home with an ERA of 2.43 and a WHIP of 1.14 in his last five starts in Denver.

This game has been pegged with another high total of 10. Take the Under tonight with confidence.

                  Wainwright's Return

We don't usually like betting on a game involving a starting pitcher returning from a lenthy injury absense, but in the case of today's return of Cardinals' starting pitcher Adam Wainwright we love the fade in this spot. Wainwright has looked very good during his rehab outings against minor leaguers, but the big leagues are a different animal. We would expect a pitch limit of around 90 pitches tonight and then Wainwright will be handing the ball off to a bullpen that has been below average on the season with an ERA of 4.26, and over their last 10 games the bullpen ERA balloons to 4.91.

Most importantly, is that the Pirates will be starting Trevor Williams. We outlined his recent exploits above in the Streaking Starting Pitcher section and, to put it quite simply, he's been the best pitcher in baseball over the last two months.

Take a good hard look at the Pirates as +120 underdogs this evening.
