    12) Since 2014, UCLA is 8-16 vs spread at home; they play Oklahoma next week. Cincinnati has a new QB, only 21 starts back on OL; they’re 13-10 vs spread in last 23 road games.

    11) Since 2012, Florida Atlantic is 20-7-1 as a road underdog; Oklahoma covered 13 of last 17 tries as a home favorite- they play UCLA next week.

    10) Wake Forest’s QB is suspended for this game; Deacons are 10-6 vs spread in their last 16 road games. Tulane is 7-5 vs spread at home under Fritz.

    9) Since 2011, Navy is 24-14 vs spread on road; Hawai’i allowed 653 yards in their upset win last week at Colorado State, but 537 of those were thru air. Since 2011, Rainbows are 8-15-1 as a home underdog.

    8) Syracuse is 7-3 vs spread on road under Babers; Western Michigan is 7-5 vs spread in its last 12 home games. Last seven years, ACC teams are 16-10 vs spread when playing MAC opponents.

    7) Central Michigan is 7-3 as road underdogs under coach Bonamego; since 2015, Kentucky is 4-10 as a home favorite.

    6) Marshall’s QB has 20 career starts, but they were at I-AA Wagner; Thundering Herd is 10-3-1 vs spread in its last 14 games as road underdogs. Miami (-1.5) lost 31-26 at Marshall LY; Red Hawks are 4-7 vs spread in their last 11 home games.

    5) Indiana won its last two games with FIU, 34-13/36-22; Hoosiers are 11-15 vs spread in their last 26 road games. FIU was 4-0 as a home underdog LY, in Butch Davis’ first year there.

    4) SMU won its last three games with North Texas: 54-32, 34-21, 31-13; Mustangs are 6-4-1 vs spread in their last 11 road games. Since 2011, Mean Green is 14-7 as home favorites.

    3) Since 2008, Boise State is 36-16 as road favorites; they’re 12-8 vs spread in last 20 non-MW games. Since 2008, Troy is 3-4 as home underdogs.

    2) Since 2012, UNLV is 21-8 vs spread as road underdogs; since ’11, USC is 25-17 as home favorites.

    1) A final word on betting college football, from Alex Kolodziej, betting writer for The Score:

    “…….however, a warning: More teams mean more opportunities, and more opportunities mean increased betting volume. And I’ll be the first to say that when Week 1 of college football arrives and there are 40 more games to choose from than the opening week of the NFL, there will be a raging impulse to take every nugget from your Phil Steele magazine and apply them.

    Do not listen to that impulse. Be selective. Or be broke.”

      Best and worst MLB starting pitchers to bet on in September
      Marc Lawrence

      J.A. Happ was having a good season with the Toronto Blue Jays and has thrived in Yankee pinstripes with an ERA under 2.40.

      Like our waistlines after a tasty Labor Day barbeque, MLB rosters expand to accommodate September, the final month of the season. And as College Football and the NFL barge onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail. The question is which ones can we count on and which ones figure to be candidates for offseason Weight Watchers meetings?

      Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

      Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s September’s list. Enjoy the games.

      GOOD SEPTEMBER PITCHERS:

      Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians • 11-4 (7-2 H)

      Carrasco is once again finishing the season with a flourish. Since July, he has really gotten in an excellent groove and is on pace to have his fourth straight strong year as a starter. Playing mostly weak opponents all month, Carrasco and Cleveland should pile up more wins this month.

      Cole Hamels, Chicago Cubs • 13-4 (7-2 H)

      Hamels has stepped right into the Chicago Cubs rotation and has been motivated by the chance to get back to the playoffs. Cubs coaches have fine-tuned Hamels pitch selection and as a result his ERA is 0.69 with Chicago.

      J.A. Happ, New York Yankees • 11-4 (9-0 A)

      Happ is another hurler dialed in with a team that is heading to the postseason. The All Star left-hander was having a good season and has thrived in the Yankee pinstripes with an ERA under 2.40. Likely, more winning days ahead.

      * Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers • 12-4 (6-2 A)

      Remember all the talk of the “sky is falling” about Kershaw? Let's face it his ERA was almost 3.00, which by human standards is fantastic. But not for Kershaw, evidently. Since coming off the DL he's been dealing and guess what, his ERA this season now matches his career norms. Look for more W's in September.

      Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs • 13-4 (7-2 H)

      After a few bumpy starts in July and August, Lester has gotten back on track and looks to be ready to be the clutch pitcher he's been throughout his career. The lefty has actually been tougher on the road, with more strikeouts, fewer walks and lower batting average allowed as compared to at Wrigley.

      Carlos Martinez, St. Louis Cardinals • 11-5 (6-2 A)

      Not sure what to expect from Martinez at the moment. He's not pitched since July 30th and been on the DL with shoulder inflammation. His ERA has steadily been rising since June and his walks are way up. Stay tuned.

      Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals • 13-4 (7-0 A)

      As great as Mad Max has pitched since 2013, this year is setting up to be his masterpiece, even on a .500 team. Scherzer's at a career-low for ERA, opposing batters are hitting under.190 against him and have an OBP of under .250. This is not supposed to happen to 34-year-old pitchers. #magnificent

      Luis Severino, New York Yankees • 10-1 (4-0 A)

      The Yankees ace was pitching like Scherzer before running into trouble the middle of July. There is no doubt he struggled for a long stretch, however, upon closer inspection, his WHIP, batting average allowed and ERA are very close to career norms. Look for Severino to be fine this month. Note: the 10-1 record is also career mark for Severino.

      * Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals • 9-1 (3-0 A)

      Once again, Strasburg, after a stellar start, landed on the DL. He's made a couple of late August starts and not been impressive. Typically he finds ways to win games late in the season, even without his best stuff. But can this occur every year?

      Josh Tomlin, Cleveland Indians • 10-3 (6-0 A)

      Tomlin was terrible early for the Tribe and was sent to the bullpen and later landed on the DL. Unless he comes back and is fantastic, the 33-year might only get a spot start or two to see if he can make the playoff roster.

      * Justin Verlander, Houston Astros • 12-4 (7-2 A)

      The Astros right-hander is on pace to produce a magnificent season like he did in 2011-12 and with Detroit. Like the other great pitchers that are Verlander's age, he made the adjustment and has continued to be outstanding.

      BAD SEPTEMBER PITCHERS:

      * Chris Archer, Pittsburgh Pirates • 3-13 (1-9 A)

      It turns out Archer is anything but an ace as his career continues to spiral downward. All those years of him just pitching "in tough luck" cannot hide the fact his record is well below .500 and with an ERA to match. Look for more of the same this month.

      Ivan Nova, Pittsburgh Pirates • 3-10 (1-5 A)

      Month by month, Nova has had an 'incredible' season. His first month he's at a 3.37 ERA, which is followed by 7.51. Nova rebounds exceptionally at 1.75 in June and July he's back up to 5.53. August gave us 4.44. September?

      * Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox • 5-10 (2-5 H)

      Boston fans and backers have to be concerned with Sale being on the DL twice since July. Their near perfect season could take a major hit if Sale is not pitching well come late September before the playoffs. Buyer beware.

      Jordan Zimmermann, Detroit Tigers • 3-7 (2-5 H)

      Zimmerman was on the “Play On” September list last year, but a winless September in 2017 bounces him to the “Play Against” category this season. Similar to other pitchers on this list, Zimmermann is a roller-coaster ride. Here we go again!

                    Wkd Series Prices - Best Bets

                    In back-to-back weeks I've let myself and you readers down with these plays as both the Phillies and Rockies couldn't manage to get the job done a week ago. That's two consecutive weeks of failing to cash a winner with these series plays, so it's time to take a minor step back and narrow the focus down to a single matchup to hopefully reverse this course.

                    And with many of this weekend's matchups being four-game sets that got going last night – especially involving playoff contenders – I'm not sure there was going to be more than one series broken down anyways.

                    I mean, do you really want to try and figure out who's going to win at least two games between trash teams like Baltimore and Kansas City? I sure don't, so let's get right to this play as there is one team that is primed to play spoiler this weekend.

                    Pittsburgh Pirates (+135) vs Atlanta Braves (-160)

                    This is one of those matchups we've got in the NL where there is actually one side playing for everything (Atlanta) and the other resigned to the spoiler role (Pittsburgh). Trying to play spoiler is something the Pirates have grown accustomed to in recent weeks as their last four series have all been against potential playoff squads. The Pirates split a four-game set with the Cubs, got swept at home by this Atlanta Braves team, and then lost two of three on the road to both Milwaukee and St Louis. Overall they are 4-9 SU in those 13 games and really the poor results can largely be attributed to a lack of consistent offense.

                    Pittsburgh scored an average of 2.3 runs per game over that stretch, and if you eliminate their high-scoring series with the Brewers (Pittsburgh scored 19 runs in that three-game set), you'll see that they only scored 2 runs or less in nine of those other 10 games. There were four shutout losses in that stretch – including in their last outing on Thursday – and they only managed a total of two runs (one run in two games) when they got swept by this Braves team. That is just abysmal production on basically all levels, but despite all that the Braves are only laying 60 cents on the dollar at home against this team they just swept a week ago? Seems a little odd doesn't it?

                    Well, for one, Pittsburgh's rotation probably couldn't line up any better for this three-game set with jameson Taillon getting the ball in the opener and being followed by Chris Archer and Ivan Nova. The latter two in that list were involved in two of the three losses to the Braves a week ago, so for those of you that like to acknowledge “revenge angles” there is two games it's on the side of the visitors. Archer and Nova may have not had the seasons they'd prefer or expect from themselves, but they've been around long enough to know how to turn it on when they are feeling good and we could easily see that happen this weekend.

                    Secondly, the Braves may own a three-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East standings, but that lead has only stayed where it is because Philly has been struggling a bit too. Atlanta is just 2-4 SU in their last six games overall and they've watched their pitching staff give up 5 or more runs in three straight games. The Braves (and Phillies for that matter) are a young team still that don't have many guys used to winning at this level and it's starting to look like some nerves are showing. Atlanta has been ahead of schedule in their “rebuild” all year long and while that's definitely a huge positive for the organization, it won't come without a few bumps in the road now that September baseball has arrived.

                    Finally, with the road team taking the last five matchups between these two teams it's hard not to like the Pirates at this price to get a bit of revenge. Last year we had a similar case where it was the Pirates who swept the first meeting between these two and then the Braves turned around and took the first two games of the following four-game series later in the year. That worked out to a split given it was a four-gamer, but the Pirates could follow that same script and take the first two contests of this weekend's matchup. That's good enough for me at this +135 price tag, and with the pitching rotation seemingly in the Pirates favor, at least on paper, this is one underdog that's got a great shot at being a spoiler this weekend.

                    Best Bet: Pittsburgh to win the series

                    As far as the other series' are concerned this weekend, here's how I see them breaking down.

                    *Number of games won in brackets

                    Milwaukee (1) vs Washington (2)
                    Chicago Cubs (2) vs Philadelphia (1)
                    Cincinnati (1) vs St Louis (2)
                    New York Mets (1) vs San Francisco (2)
                    Tampa Bay (1) vs Cleveland (2)
                    Minnesota (1) vs Texas (2)
                    Baltimore vs Kansas City – who cares
                    Toronto (1) vs Miami (2)

                      Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                      Streaking:
                      Zack Wheeler, New York Mets (9-6, 3.46 ERA, $-38)

                      While most of the talk around the Mets is the unreal play of Jacob deGrom (and his incredible First Five Innings Under trend), Wheeler is having himself quite the season and is straight dealing.

                      The right-hander has an 0.92 ERA with an 0.95 WHIP over his last six starts, while striking out 41 batters compared to just nine walks. Wheeler and the Mets are slight +107 road dogs tonight in San Francisco.

                      Slumping:
                      Nathan Eovaldi, Boston Red Sox (5-6, 4.15 ERA, $-52)

                      Eovaldi came out gangbusters in his first two starts with the Red Sox, allowing just seven hits in 15 shutout innings against the Twins and Yankees. Since then though, he has come back down to earth.

                      Eovaldi has pitched to a 7.41 ERA with an ugly 2.24 WHIP over his last four starts. Eovaldi will try to get back on track tonight when the Red Sox visit the White Sox. Boston is currently a -160 road fave.
