    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Most strikeouts in their first 200 starts:

    1) Chris Sale 1,628

    2) Pedro Martinez 1,600

    3) Nolan Ryan 1,574

    4) Randy Johnson 1,456

    5) Bob Feller 1,411

    6) Sam McDowell 1,409

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) If you care about such things, Minnesota’s Mike Zimmer is 43-21 against the spread as an NFL head coach. Hue Jackson is 17-30-1; he coached the Raiders for one year, before coaching Cleveland the last two seasons.

    12) Someone at SouthPoint Casino in Las Vegas wagered $20,000 on the Houston Texans to win the AFC title at 10-1 odds; so if the Texans make the Super Bowl, that person banks $200,000.

    11) Dodgers had their fantasy football draft this week; Clayton Kershaw took Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford in the 8th round. When Stafford was playing HS football in Texas, his center was….Clayton Kershaw.

    10) If he hits all his incentives, Odell Beckham will make $19M a year from the Giants; there are 52 guys in the NBA making $19M a year. Seriously. 52.

    9) Highest-paid major league managers:
$6M a year: Mike Scioscia, Joe Maddon, Bruce Bochy
$4M a year: Terry Francona, Buck Showalter

Showalter is the only one of those five guys who hasn’t won a World Series; he has a 9-14 career record in playoff games.

    8) Lowest-paid major league managers:
$700,000 a year: Jim Riggleman, Mike Shildt, both interim managers (Shildt got the full-time job Tuesday, so he’ll be getting a big raise)
$800,000 a year: Alex Cora, Scott Servais, Brian Snitker

    7) Chris Davis plays first base for Baltimore; he hit 47 homers in 2015, 38 in ’16, but is hitting .167 this year, with a .246 on-base %age.

Davis is making $23M a year, now thru 2023. To make matters worse, from 2023-37, he gets an additional $42M in deferred payments. Yikes.

    6) Not only does Nebraska have a true freshman starting at QB this season, his two backups are walk-ons, one is another true freshman, the other a transfer from Scottsdale CC.

    5) Feast or Famine: Washington Nationals have scored double digit runs in nine games this year; they’ve been shut out 13 times.

    4) University of Albany’s freshman class has students from 23 different states and 21 countries. They have a basketball player from Fullerton, CA; if you live near Disneyland, why in the name of Jim Cantore are you spending four years in upstate New York?

    3) St Louis Cardinals named interim manager Mike Shildt their full-time skipper; Cardinals are 26-12 since Shildt took over as manager on July 15.

    2) Chicago Cubs are 14-1 at home in games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on; they’re 11-10 on the road in games like that.

    1) Dwayne Wade’s son will be a junior in high school this fall; he picked up his first scholarship offer last week; Nebraska offered him a full ride to play for the Cornhuskers.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals will do battle at Busch Stadium II, and the 'under' looks like a tremendous play. The under has cashed in six of the past seven meetings in St. Louis between these National League Central combatants. For St. Louis, the under is 3-1-1 in their past five home games, and 5-2 in their past seven overall. While the over has hit in seven of the past 10 starts by Miles Mikolas, the under is an impressive 8-3 in his past 11 starts at home. The under has also going an impressive 18-7-2 in the past 27 for the Cardinals at home against teams with a losing record, and 4-0-1 in their past five at home against teams with a right-handed starting pitcher.

As far as the Bucs are concerned, the under is 3-1-1 in the past five starts by Trevor Williams against the Cards. The under is 11-3 in his past 14 road outings, too, while going 13-3-1 in the past 17 starts inside the National League Central for Williams. The under is also 33-16-2 in his past 51 starts, while going 19-6-1 in his past 26 starts against a team with a winning record. While the over is 4-0 in the past four road games for the Pirates, the under is 10-4 in their past 14 games overall and 8-3 in their past 11 games against a team with a winning overall record. The under is also 7-3 in the past 10 vs. RHP.

                Looking Ahead

                Wednesday, Aug. 29

The Rays and Braves continue their interleague series, and LHP Sean Newcomb will take the ball for the home team. The Rays have seen the under cash in eight of their past nine road games, while going 7-1-1 in their past nine on the road vs. LHP. In addition, the under is an impressive 20-5-1 in their past 26 road games against a team with a winning overall record. The under is 19-6-3 in their past 28 games overall against southpaws, too. For the Braves, the under is 4-0 in their past four home games vs. RHP, and 11-1 in the past 12 overall against righties. The under is 19-7 in Atlanta's past 26 at home against a team with a winning record, too, although the over is 4-1 in Newcomb's past five interleague starts and 8-2 in his past 10 starts following a quality start in his most recent appearance. The under is 4-1 in the past five meetings in this interleague series.

The Blue Jays and Orioles will battle at Camden Yards after a high-scoring battle on Tuesday night. LHP Ryan Borucki will take the ball against the disappointing RHP Alex Cobb. The over has been the play lately for the lefty rookie Borucki, hitting in each of his past five on the road and five of the past six starts overall. The over is also 11-4 in Toronto's past 15 on the road against a right-handed starter, while going 13-5 in their past 18 games on the road. For the O's, the under is 11-4-1 in the past 16 games overall, and 5-2 in the past seven vs. LHP. The under is 6-2 in the past eight starts overall for the O's, while going 5-2 in the past seven at home. In this series, the under is 16-5-1 in the past 22 meetings at Oriole Park, and 36-16-1 in the past 53 overall in this series.

It's a battle of southpaws as Dodgers LHP Alex Wood and Rangers LHP Mike Minor square off at Globe Life Park in Arlington. The under has cashed in four straight starts by Wood, while the under is 5-1 in the past six road games for Los Angeles against a team with a losing home record. However, the over is 7-3 in their past 10 interleague road games against a left-handed stater and 6-2 in Wood's past eight road starts against a team with a losing overall mark. The under has ruled for Texas lately, going 4-1 in their past five overall, 3-0-1 in the past four interleague home outings and 6-1-1 in the past eight interleague home outings vs. LHP. The under is 5-1 in Minor's past six home outings, and 9-3-1 in his past 13 overall.

The Diamondbacks roll out RHP Zack Godley for the NL West battle against the Giants and rookie RHP Dereck Rodriguez. The under is 8-1 in Arizona's past nine road games against a team with a winning home record and 6-2-1 in their past nine vs. RHP. However, the over is 5-2 in Godley's past seven overall, and 5-2 in his past seven inside the division. The over is also 7-0-1 in the past eight road outings by Godley against a team with a losing record. For the Giants, the under is 5-0-1 in their past six against a team with a winning record and 5-1 in the past six at home. The under is also 18-6-2 in the past 26 inside the division for the Giants. The under is 7-2 in the past nine starts for Rodriguez, too. In this series, the under is 22-10-1 in the past 33 in San Francisco.

                Betting On The Wind

Precipitation is not in the forecast at any of the Major League Baseball venues on Hump Day, so enjoy the weather-free day. There will be winds from 11-14 mph blowing left to right at Petco Park affecting the Mariners and Padres, however. The Marlins and Red Sox will also see a jetstream from 10-13 mph blowing out. The Dodgers and Rangers will experience winds from 11-14 mph blowing into the face of the batters.

                Thursday, Aug. 30

Indians RHP Mike Clevinger will host the Twins in the afternoon series finale. The under is 2-1-1 in his past four starts at home, including his last outing against the Twins back on Aug. 8 at Progressive Field. He allowed one earned run, five hits and one walks while striking out five over seven innings in that no-decision, a 5-2 win by the Tribe. The Twins counter with RHP Jake Odorizzi, and the under has connected in each of his past four outings, including that same Aug. 8 matchup with Clevinger in Cleveland. Odorizzi has allowed a total of just 23 earned runs over his past 49 innings across 10 starts.

White Sox RHP Lucas Giolito has a 5.85 ERA over all this season, but he has won 10 games and picked up the pace lately. The over has connected in each of his past three outings at home, and he has allowed 12 earned runs in just 9 1/3 innings across the past two. It might not get any easier against the first-place Red Sox on Thursday evening.

Padres LHP Clayton Richard will work against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night at Petco Park. The over is an impressive 7-1 over his past eight starts, and 4-1 over his past five outings at home. The over is 1-0-1 in Richard's two starts this season against the Rockies.

                Friday, Aug. 31

The Yankees will use ace RHP Luis Severino in their series opener against the Tigers and Jordan Zimmermann. Surprisingly, the over is 9-2 in the past 11 starts by Severino, including 4-0 in his past four outings at Yankee Stadium. He faced the Tigers on June 4 in Detroit in a 7-4 win as the over also connected in that one. The over is also 5-0 in Severino's five outings against American League Central foes this season.

Marlins RHP Dan Straily will take the ball to face the Blue Jays in interleague action. Straily allowed just three hits and a walk with four strikeouts over six scoreless innings in a 1-0 win against the Braves in his most recent start at Marlins Park, and the under as cashed in each of his past two starts at home with three runs and seven hits allowed in 10 2/3 innings.

Mets RHP Zack Wheeler will face the Giants in late-night action. He has really worked down his ERA lately, cruising along with a 3.46 ERA through 153 1/3 innings. The under is 4-2 over his past six outings, including a strong outing on Aug. 20 against the Giants at Citi Field. He allowed just one earned run, five hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts over seven innings in the no-decision, a 2-1 loss. The over has connected in five of his past seven starts on the road.

                  Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Yankees are 17-0 SU as a 200+ favorite after they had a comeback win and it is post All-Star break and not a series opener. The Yankees have won by an average of 5.24 runs and EVERY victory was by multiple runs, making them 17-0 on the run-line.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Tigers are 0-30 SU All-Star break as a dog off a game as a dog in which they had fewer team-left-on-base than their opponent and struck out fewer than a dozen times. Detroit lost these 30 games by an average of 5.00 runs and they are 0-10 in this spot this season.

                  Hitter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Marlins are 0-18 SU in franchise history as a 150-plus dog off a game as a dog in which Starlin Castro had multiple hits.

                  Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Red Sox are 16-0 SU when David Price starts as a home favorite when he is off a quality start.

                    Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                    Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Cardinals (18-3 last 21)

St. Louis has gone from not being in the playoff picture last month to leading the National League Wild Card race as August wraps up. The Cardinals finished their road trip at Los Angeles and Colorado with an impressive 5-1 record and avoided a letdown in Tuesday’s 5-2 home victory over Pittsburgh. In eight of the last 10 games, the Cardinals have allowed three runs or less, led by right-hander Jack Flaherty, as St. Louis went 5-0 in his five August starts.

The Cards own an 8-2 mark in their past 10 games at Busch Stadium, as Miles Mikolas takes the mound against the Pirates. Mikolas continues to have a resurgence after not pitching in the Majors since 2014 as St. Louis has compiled a 9-1 record in his last 10 starts dating back to Independence Day. The one team Mikolas hasn’t been sharp against is Pittsburgh as the Cardinals are 1-2 in his three starts versus the Bucs, including a 4-0 home loss in June.

Coldest team: Phillies (2-8 last 10)

A playoff berth is slowly slipping away from Philadelphia, who has put together one of the top turnarounds in baseball. The Phillies blew a 3-0 lead in Tuesday’s 5-4 home setback to the Nationals as Washington scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to waste a solid outing by Aaron Nola. Philadelphia sits four games behind Atlanta for the top spot in the National League East and 2 ½ games back of Milwaukee for the second Wild Card position in the National League.

The Phillies try to avoid the sweep tonight as former Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta heads to the hill. Arrieta has lost three consecutive starts and Philadelphia is 0-4 in his past four outings dating back to August 6. The Phillies have split Arrieta’s two starts against Washington this season, while Philadelphia is 4-2 in the right-hander’s last six starts at Citizens Bank Park.

Hottest pitcher: Mike Minor, Rangers (10-6, 4.40 ERA)

Texas remains at the bottom of the AL West, but the lone bright spot on the mound has been Minor. In his four starts since late July, the Rangers are 4-0, including underdog victories over the Astros, Yankees, and Athletics. Minor shut down the potent Oakland offense in his last start by allowing one hit in six scoreless innings of a 4-2 victory at the Coliseum last Wednesday to avoid the sweep to the A’s. The southpaw will be tested again in the ‘dog role tonight against the Dodgers as Texas tries to avoid the season sweep by Los Angeles.

Coldest pitcher: Zack Godley, Diamondbacks (13-7, 4.59 ERA)

Arizona’s pitching has been solid in two games against San Francisco by allowing three runs. However, the D-backs’ offense hasn’t pushed a single run across in a pair of losses, including a disappointing 1-0 walk-off defeat to the Giants on Tuesday. Godley has struggled of late as the Arizona right-hander hasn’t lasted past the fifth inning in his last two outings against the Padres and Mariners, while yielding 15 hits and 11 earned runs. The last time Godley faced the Giants at Chase Field on July 1, he was tagged for seven runs in four innings of a 9-6 setback.

Biggest OVER run: Brewers (5-1 last six)

Milwaukee fell behind Cincinnati, 6-0 after two innings on Tuesday, but the Brewers rallied to get within 7-6 through 6 ½ innings. The OVER of 9 easily cashed, but Milwaukee fell short in a 9-7 defeat, the second time the Brewers have lost to the Reds by that score in a week. The Brewers’ offense scored seven runs for the third time in four games as Milwaukee tries to end a 3-8 skid on the road. Freddy Peralta tossed seven scoreless innings against the Reds at Miller Park last week in a 4-0 victory, while Reds’ starter Matt Harvey has cashed the UNDER in four of his last five starts overall.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (6-2 last eight)

Arizona’s offense hasn’t scored a run in the last 18 innings at San Francisco and has come up dry in the past 23 innings overall. The pitching staff has allowed five runs in the previous three games, while Arizona has hit the UNDER in six of the past eight series finales since the end of July. San Francisco is riding a 5-1 UNDER stretch the last six games as rookie Dereck Rodriguez takes the hill tonight. Rodriguez has cashed the UNDER in seven of the past nine starts overall, including two of the last three at AT&T Park.

Matchup to watch: Rays vs. Braves

Tampa Bay had its eight-game winning streak halted in Tuesday’s 9-5 defeat at Atlanta, as the Rays allowed more runs last night than they did in their previous four games combined. The Braves exploded for a pair of four-run inning, while gaining a valuable game on the Phillies for the top spot in the NL East race.

The two squads wrap up their two-game interleague series at SunTrust Park as Atlanta goes for the season sweep of Tampa Bay. Sean Newcomb takes the mound for the Braves as Atlanta has won five of the southpaw’s last six starts since late July. Newcomb has either been great or terrible recently as allowed one earned run or less four times in this stretch, but was knocked around in two other starts by giving up 21 hits and 12 earned runs in home starts against the Brewers and Rockies.

The Rays turn to another reliever to start tonight as Diego Castillo makes his third start in the last 10 days. Granted, Castillo didn’t last past the second inning, but Tampa Bay won both outings against Boston as an underdog. Since dropping the final three games at Baltimore in late July, the Rays are 5-5 in their last 10 contests away from Tropicana Field, which includes three victories over the Red Sox and Yankees.

                    Betcha didn’t know:
The Indians won Adam Plutko’s first three starts this season, but Cleveland has dropped four of his past five starts. Cleveland routed Minnesota on Tuesday, 8-1, as the Twins have scored five runs in the previous four games, all losses. Since a four-game road winning streak in late July, the Twins have lost 10 of their past 13 games away from Target Field.

                    Biggest public favorite:
                    Red Sox (-300) vs. Marlins

                    Biggest public underdog:
                    Tigers (+103) at Royals

                    Biggest line move:
Rays (+145 to +135) at Braves

                      Wednesday, August 29

                      Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                      Streaking:
David Price, Boston Red Sox (14-6, 3.50 ERA, $1194)

With team wins in his last eight starts, David Price has surged his way to the top of our Starter Money Standings, now rewarding backers with 11.94 units of profit on the season.

Over Price's last five starts (all team wins) he owns an ERA of 1.09 to go along with a very tidy WHIP of 0.871.

Price gets a seemingly cushy assignment this evening as a massive -310 favorite against Trevor Richards and the Miami Marlins.

                      Slumping:
Marco Gonzales, Seattle Mariners (12-9, 4.32 ERA, $293)

For the second day in a row we will feature a starting pitcher from the Seattle Mariners rotation as the day's Slumping Starter - yesterday was "King Felix" and today the honor goes to lefty Marco Gonzales. This isn't a particularily good look for a team with outside visions of making the playoffs.

"Gonzo" had an excellent first half of the season and was one of the top Under starting pitchers in the entire league, but things have fallen off the rails for him recently. In his last four starting assignments (all team losses for the M's and all Over results), Gonzales is pitching to an ERA of 10.35 and a WHIP of 2.05.

Gonzales and the Mariners will attempt to turn things around this afternoon as slight -110 favorites in San Diego against Joey Lucchesi and the Padres.

                      Hitter's Wind At Fenway

The forecast for Fenway Park in Boston tonight is calling for a strong 13-15 mile per hour breeze blowing straight out to center field. Obviously, this is great news for hitters - but having David Price on the mound for the Sox against the Marlins' AA batting lineup leaves an uneasy feeling when dealing with the full game total of 10 and the First Five total of 5.5.

Earlier this season, the Red Sox pounded Marlins' starter Trevor Richards for five runs over 4.1 innings of work.

The best suggestion in this spot is to take the Red Sox Team Total Over 6.5 (+115) and there might be a worthwhile spinkle on the Red Sox Total Hits Over 9.5.

                      D-Rod At AT&T

The Giants and Diamondbacks tangle in the final game of their three-game series in San Francisco this evening. The Giants are listed as the underdogs for this matchup, but hold a clear edge in the starting pitching department.

The pitching matchup tonight is Zack Godly versus Dereck Rodriguez. Godly is coming off consecutive poor outings and his last two starts against the Giants were absolute disasters, allowing 14 runs (17.18 ERA) and walking seven batters (2.8636 WHIP) in only 7.1 innings of work.

D-Rod, on the other hand, had a solid first outing since returning from the DL with his hamstring issue and his only career start against the D-Backs was 6.1 innings of shutout pitching in an eventual 7-0 win for the Giants.

Our first love for this game is taking the Giants to win the first five innings at -110 and +105 for the full game is definitely worth a look.

                      Saving "Harvey"

The name "Harvey" has been associated with some pretty terrible things over the last year - Hurricane Harvey and Harvey Weinstein - but Reds' starter Matt Harvey is here to restore faith in the "Harvey" name. It's no secret that the big righty has been much improved since being dealt from the Mets to the Reds and, despite a slight speed bump at the end of July, his recent form has been terrific. Over his last three starts he owns a team win/loss record of 2-1, an ERA of 1.45, a WHIP of 0.91, and an opponent's on-base percentage of .239.

Today Harvey will faceoff against the Milwaukee Brewers, the same team who claimed him on revocable waivers last week but were unable to arrange a deal with the Reds. We don't think "revenge" is the right term in this case since it's not certain which side squashed a potential trade, but Matt Harvey should be a little extra motivated today to show the Brewers exactly what they're missing out on.

The leans for this game are Harvey and the Reds at home (+130) and the Brewers' team total Under 4.5 (+110).
