    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Interesting point spreads for next weekend’s college football:

    — Northwestern @ Purdue (-3) Thursday night

    — Colorado State vs Colorado (-7.5) in Denver Friday night.

    — Washington vs Auburn (-2.5) in Atlanta

    — West Virginia (-9.5) vs Tennessee in Charlotte

    — Michigan (-1.5) @ Notre Dame

    — Miami (-3) vs LSU in Cowboys Stadium, Dallas

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) There are two NFL handicapping contests at the Westgate in Las Vegas; in one you put up $1,500, pick five NFL games a week, and lot of people get prizes (30? 50?). First prize last year was right around $1M- they wound up with 2,748 entries, so $4,122,000 was in the pot.

This year, 1,768 people have signed up so far, with 13 days to go for more people to enter.

The second contest is winner-take-all, with a $5,000 entry fee. Last year, 94 people entered, so first prize was $470,000. This year, 64 people have entered, as of Saturday.

    12) Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas also a contest, one where you pick seven games a week, but they can be college games, too. Entry fee is $1,000, and top 20 finishers get paid.

    11) If you like to bet on sports, you should listen to SportsXradio, which is on 10-12 pm every weeknight here in the east. It is on radio station 720am in Las Vegas, or you can listen on sportsxradio.com. Shows are archived if you can’t listen to them live.

Why do I say this? They have a guy named Joe Lisi on Friday nights who knows a ton about college football- he pegged 17-point underdog Hawai’i as a SU winner at Colorado State. Host Ken Thomson is as sharp about sports as anyone in the country.

    10) Nebraska will be starting a true freshman QB in Scott Frost’s first season coaching the Cornhuskers; Adrian Martinez was supposed to go to Tennessee, but when Butch Jones was told to take a hike, Martinez went elsewhere.

Martinez had an operation on his throwing shoulder and missed his senior year of high school ball; will be interesting to see him play next week.

    9) Bad news for my A’s; Sean Manaea (shoulder) goes on the DL. All five members of the A’s starting rotation from the start of the season are now either hurt, or coming back from injury.

Oakland is 45-16 since June 16, but the Manaea injury is a problem.

    8) Seattle Seahawks’ rookie punter Michael Dickson is getting rave reviews this summer; he has great hang time on his punts and stuck a couple of them inside the Minnesota 10-yard line in this weekend’s game. Dickson is an Australian who played college football at Texas.

    7) Pirates’ pitcher Chris Archer wore neon green baseball shoes when he pitched in Milwaukee Sunday; kind of like Baylor’s basketball uniforms- very bright. Wonder if it distracted hitters at all.

    6) They drew 3,000 fans in downtown Las Vegas for a Raiders watch party when the Silver and Black played in Green Bay last week; it’ll be fascinating to see how the Raiders’ move to the desert works out.

    5) Toronto 1B Kendrys Morales has homered in seven straight games; the record is eight, held by many, including Dale Long, who wound up doing weekend sports on Channel 10 here in Albany.

    4) Michigan Wolverines’ WR Tarik Black probably broke his foot Saturday at practice and is expected to miss an extended amount of time; he is an important part of their offense. Black also missed ten games last year with a foot injury.

    3) Albany Great Danes’ basketball team has six international students; they have players from four different countries. No players from New York City, only 148 miles down the road.

    2) Weird seeing Matt Holliday playing for Colorado again; when we started our fantasy baseball league (a keeper league) in 2005, the first three players I drafted were Holliday, Adam Dunn and Brandon Webb.

Holliday was totally awesome in ’07, knocked in 150 runs; in ’09, Colorado traded him to the A’s, who held on to him for half the season before dealing him to St Louis, in a horrific pair of trades that set the A’s back at least a couple years. Wish he had stayed in Colorado.

    1) Odd thing: Holliday’s dad was at one time the baseball coach at Oklahoma State, but he got fired. When Holliday was on the A’s, Brett Anderson was his teammate; Anderson’s father was the guy who replaced Tom Holliday at OSU. Had to be at least a little awkward.

Then in 2012, when Frank Anderson left Oklahoma State, Holliday’s brother Josh replaced him, and remains the Cowboys’ baseball coach to this day.

              Ballpark Figures - Week 22
              Joe Williams

              Streaky Teams (entering Monday)

              Wins and Losses Streak
Chicago Cubs 5-0 past five games overall
Chicago White Sox 9-3 past 12 games overall
Houston 5-0 past five games overall
L.A. Angels 1-8 past nine games overall
Tampa Bay 8-0 past eight games overall

              Over/Under Streak
Atlanta Under 9-0 past nine games
Miami Under 4-0 past four games
Philadelphia Over 5-2 past seven games
St. Louis Under 7-3-1 past 11 games
San Francisco Under 10-4-1 past 15 games

              Brave New World

The Atlanta Braves have been a friend to total bettors, hitting the 'under' in nine consecutive games. That includes seven straight road games, although they'll have to wait a while to extend that streak since they'll be opening up a new homestand against the Tampa Bay Rays starting on Tuesday. The under is 5-2 in Atlanta's past seven at home, too, so there is a good chance the run continues at SunTrust Park. They'll roll with RHP Julio Teheran for the series opener, opposed by RHP Ryne Stanek. The under has hit in three straight starts for Teheran since his last 'over' back on Aug. 5 at CitiField against the Mets. The under has also hit in five consecutive starts for Teheran at home dating back to June 23.

The Braves might find it difficult to cool off the Rays, who enter with eight consecutive victories. Atlanta won two of three against the Milwaukee Brewers to kick off their last homestand from Aug. 10-12, and they had a four-game sweep of the Miami Marlins Aug. 13-15 after that. However, they were left with a poor taste in their mouth after the Colorado Rockies broomed them in a four-game set to close out the homestand. The 'over' is 3-1 in Stanek's past four starts overall, and 3-1 in his past four on the road, too. The Rays are also a dismal 1-7 across Stanek's past eight assignments on the road, so Teheran and the Braves might be the play Tuesday evening in the interleague series opener.

In interleague play, the Rays have posted a 6-9 record in their previous 15 games against the NL this season, including 0-2 against the Braves back in a mini-set on May 8-9 at Tropicana Field. Atlanta hasn't been much better against the AL, going just 7-8 in 15 previous interleague battles this season.

              Looking Ahead

              Monday, Aug. 27

The Athletics head to Minute Maid Park to battle the Astros in a key American League West battle. The Astros are clinging to a 1 1/2-game lead in the AL West against the surprising A's. LHP Brett Anderson will take the ball for the A's, while the Astros counter with RHP Gerrit Cole. Oakland has won 17 of their past 22 games inside the division, while going 20-8 over the past 28 games on the road. In addition, Oakland is 22-9 in the past 31 road games vs. RHP, while going 40-19 in the past 59 overall against righties. The A's haven't fared well with Anderson on the bump lately, posting a 4-9 record across the lefty's past 13 against teams with a winning record.

The Astros have been stumbling at home lately, going 1-9 in their past 10 games at Minute Maid. They're just 1-4 in the past five against left-handed starters, while going 1-4 in their past five to kick off a new series, too. However, they are 4-0 in the past four vs. LHP, while going 5-0 in their past five games against AL West foes. Cole might be the guy to snap them out of their funk. While they are 0-4 in his past four against AL West clubs, and 1-4 in his past five overall, they have won seven of his past nine outings at home. Minute Maid has been a house of horrors for the A's lately, going 17-35 in the past 52 against the Astros overall, and 9-19 in the past 28 trips to the Gulf Coast.

The probable starters for Monday's series opener in San Francisco features Diamondbacks LHP Patrick Corbin facing Giants RHP Chris Stratton. Arizona has won four of their past five road games, while winning seven of the past 10 overall. They're 6-0 in Corbin's past six starts, and 7-1 in his past eight assignments on the road. In addition, they're an impressive 13-3 in the past 16 when Corbin is working on five days of rest. The Giants have struggled lately at home, winning just three of their past 12 against teams with a winning overall record. They're also 1-4 in their past five at home against a southpaw while posting a 1-6 mark in their past seven at AT&T Park against a team with a winning road record.

              Weather Report

Precipitation will not be a problem during the short slate of games on Monday. However, winds will be a huge issue for the Mets and Cubs, as the wind will be blowing out to left-center field at a 16-19 mph clip. It's a battle of RHP Noah Syndergaard and LHP Jon Lester. The nder is 3-1-2 in Thor's past six road outings, while going 16-4-2 in his past 22 against winning teams. The under is 8-2 in Chicago's past 10, while going 19-7 in their past 26 vs. RHP. The over is 9-2 in Lester's past 11, and the wind could help add to that number.

              Tuesday, Aug. 28

White Sox RHP James Shields will hit the road where he has been an absolute train wreck this season. The veteran is just 1-8 with a 6.12 ERA across 11 starts and one relief appearance over 67 2/3 innings while his opponent batting average is .271 with 16 homers allowed. Surprisingly, Shields is 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA in two starts against the Yankees since the start of the 2015 season.

Indians RHP Carlos Carrasco will take the ball from manager Terry Francona against the Twins. While he has posted an impressive 8-3 record in 11 starts and one relief appearance at home this season, he has a subpar 4.35 ERA over 62 innings while the opposition is hitting .273 against him. Cookie has struggled against the Twins, too, going 1-3 with a 4.56 ERA in five starts with a .275 opponent batting average across 25 2/3 innings.

Astros RHP Charlie Morton continues to roll right along with an 8-2 record, 3.00 ERA and .213 opponent batting average across 13 starts over 78 innings. He has struck out 100 batters in his 13 home outings, too. He hasn't been able to slay the A's, however, lasting just 9 1/3 innings in two starts with no decisions and a .263 opponent batting average.

Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner will host Diamondbacks RHP Clay Buchholz at AT&T Park. MadBum has been looking a lot like himself lately, going 3-2 with a 1.71 ERA in seven home outings with a .198 opponent batting average. He has served up just two of his nine homers at home, too, while striking out 42 batters across 47 1/3 innings. He's 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two outings against the Snakes this season, although they're hitting .333 against him in 11 innings with 15 hits and three walks.

              Weather Report

The winds will be gusting out to right field from 11-14 mph at Progressive Field for the game between the Twins and Indians. The same holds true for the interleague battle between the Marlins and Red Sox, gusting 11-14 mph to right-center field. The Pirates and Cardinals will face a 10-13 mph wind blowing right to left, but no precip at least.

At Wrigley Field, the wind will be blowing out again from 11-14 mph, but the Mets and Cubs might be dodging the raindrops. Thunderstorms are forecast 40 percent or greater from first pitch through the overnight. The same holds true for the Tigers-Royals battle, with winds 13-16 mph blowing to center field. That is if the game is played, as there is a 50 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms for most of the day.

In Arlington, the Dodgers and Rangers will be blowing in from right-center field at 12-15 mph. It will be a hot wind, too, with temperatures forecast to be in the mid-90's. In the final game of the game, the D-Backs and Giants will face a 12-15 mph jetstream blowing out to straighaway center field.

                    Monday, August 27

                    Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                    Streaking:
                    Brett Anderson, Oakland Athletics (3-3, 3.47, $298)

What a great run Brett Anderson is on right now for the A's. Keep in mind, any team could have had him as a member of their rotation for next to nothing - credit to the Athletics for seeing something that nobody else could see. The Under has cashed in nine of his last 10 starts and in his last four outings he owns an ERA of 0.68 and a WHIP of 0.525.

Anderson will need to be at his best Monday night as a +170 underdog in Houston against Gerrit Cole and the Astros.

                    Slumping:
Chris Stratton, San Francisco Giants (8-7, 5.37 ERA, $449)

Giants' right-hander Chris Stratton is certainly feeling the grind of a long MLB season. After a solid first three months, Stratton has really struggled since the end of June. Over this stretch, which included a three-week long demotion to AAA, the Giants have lost all five of his big league starts and he owns an ERA of 8.89 and a WHIP of 2.0506.

Stratton will look to get things turned around tonight at home as a +160 underdog against Patrick Corbin and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

                    Kendrys Morales

Blue Jays' designated hitter Kendrys Morales will chase history tonight in Baltimore. Morales has hit a home run in seven straight games and will look to tie the major league record with a dinger against the Orioles.

O's starter David Hess has allowed at least one home run in five consecutuve starts, all four of his starts at Camden Yards this season, and 11 of his 13 starts overall in 2018. There will be a slight five mile per hour breeze blowing out to center field tonight, as well.

It's also worth noting that Morales homered in all three games of last week's three-game series between the Jays and Orioles at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Online sportsbook Bookmaker.eu has released a home run line on Morales for tonight's game with Yes at +250 and No at -350. Obviously, hitting home runs is hard - but there is no fun in betting "No" in this spot. Root for history to be made and take "Yes" at +250.

                    The Windy City

It could be a windy evening in Wrigleyville as the forcast is calling for 16-18 mile per hour winds blowing out to left-center field tonight for the game between the Cubs and the visiting New York Mets.

This game does feature an elite pitching matchup of Noah Syndergaard taking on Jon Lester, but the wind will prove to be a major factor. If it wasn't for the terrific pitching matchup this total would be up around 11.5 or 12, instead we get a total of 10.5 which feels like a gift on a day like today.

The Cubs' offense is clicking on all cylinders right now with David Murphy setting the table at the top of the lineup. Today is one of those days when pop flies to left field end up in the home run basket. Take Over 10.5 for the full game and Cubs' team total Over 5.5 (+100).

                      Hot & Not Report

                      Week of August 27th

Last week this piece was all about looking ahead to the third week of the NFL preseason and unsurprisingly we saw some regression to the mean. We saw half of those long tenured coaches (New England, Green Bay, New Orleans, and Cincinnati) opt for rest with New England and Green Bay giving their starters just one final small tune-up with vanilla-game plans, while New Orleans and Cincinnati got the ATS job done in dominant fashion, largely due to their 2nd and 3rd teams.

On the other side of things, NFC teams at home hosting an AFC franchise ended up going 3-1 O/U against the closing line, although if you had got in on the low side of the Houston/L.A Rams game early last week (or say on Monday when this article comes out), you would've went 2-2 O/U.

Either way, using these trends and situations to help you isolate games is never a bad thing, but with garbage time of all garbage times coming (from a betting perspective) with the final week of the preseason here, it's time to shift back over to MLB this week as we enter the final month of the regular season.

                      Who's Hot

MLB teams in tight division races (AL West, NL West, NL Central)

September will be a very interesting month of baseball to consume as we've got some tremendous division races in numerous divisions. The bulk of those exist in the National League where no division leader enters Monday with more than a four-game lead, but we can't forget about the AL West race either with Houston looking to do everything they can to hold off Oakland. All of the teams involved in these races are playing some great baseball right now, so who can stay hot the longest?

Over in the NL Central we've got the Cubs, Cardinals and Brewers all fighting for that top spot, and the Cubs and Cardinals enter Monday on 7-3 SU runs respectively. Chicago and St Louis begin this week at home with very winnable series against the Mets and Pirates on tap, but for the division-leading Cubs, this also continues a long stretch of games without a day off.

Chicago had last Monday off, but after finishing the week with six straight games, they won't see another day off until Thursday September 14th. That's a stretch of 23 games in 23 days and outside of this series against the Mets, the rest of their contests come against some quality foes (Atlanta, Philly, Milwaukee (twice) and Washington) with the bulk of those games also being away from home. Fatigue could easily catch up with them at some point, so don't be surprised to see the NL Central race get quite a bit tighter in the upcoming weeks.

Over in the NL West, we've got division leader Arizona on a 7-3 SU run as well to start the week, a run that is matched by 2nd place Colorado. The L.A Dodgers are just one game off that mark (6-4 SU) as they trail Arizona by 2.5 games for 1st, and you'd better believe that this race could easily come down to the final day.

All three teams begin this week on the road with two of them (Colorado and L.A) involved in interleague play. Arizona visits San Francisco which should have some intensity too it, but I'm not really willing to step in front of any of these three teams at the moment. We will see how it all plays out – especially since Arizona concludes the week with a four-game series against the Dodgers in L.A – however, all three should be good bets at certain prices in certain spots, and of the three, riding with Colorado during the next week to 10 days might be the healthiest way to treat your bankroll.

                      Who's Not

The Baltimore Orioles against the Toronto Blue Jays (0-10 SU last 10 vs Toronto, 1-12 SU in season series)

The Baltimore Orioles have been a disaster the entire year, but they tend to at least be competitive in a game or two in nearly every series. The exception to that has been when the Toronto Blue Jays are on the other side of the field as Toronto has swept the Orioles in three consecutive series' and begin this week in Baltimore for a three-game set.

Now, the side note to this 0-10 SU run the Orioles are on against the Jays is that all 10 of those games were played north of the border, but in the lone series this year where Baltimore was the home team they were nearly swept as well. For whatever reason the Orioles just have no interest in even competing most nights against the Jays, but I do see this trend turning around somewhat this week. We've already seen a bit of reverse line movement in favor of Baltimore for tonight's series opener, and you've got to believe that at home they'll show a better form of themselves against the blue birds.

For Baltimore to turn this thing around, it's got to start with their pitching though. Toronto has scored 5 or more runs in eight of those 10 consecutive wins over Baltimore and the Orioles simply don't have the talent or depth in their lineup to consistently win games by putting up 6+. Yet, it's not like the Jays are playoff bound either as they will be making some significant changes this winter, but I do believe Baltimore will get some measure of revenge against Toronto in the final six meetings with the Jays this year (all six are in Baltimore) and it begins tonight with the Orioles snapping an eight-game losing streak.

Have you ever run a statistical results on the dunkel rating? I've watch and played it for 3 months and have done very well but I'm picking and choosing to what I was currently thinking most of of the time. I'm curious if anyone has tracked an entire season
