    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    — Eduardo Paredes has been recalled by the Angels 10 times this season, including Sunday; he must have some serious frequent flier miles.

    — Cubs 4, Nationals 3— David Bote hits a walk-off grand slam for the Cubs.

    — Dodger closer Kenley Jansen is out for a month with an irregular heartbeat.
Here are some incentives that Kenta Maeda is likely to miss by going to the bullpen:

    — $1M each for his 25th, 30th, and 32nd start.

    — $250,000 each for his 110th, 120th, 130th, 140th, 150th, 160th, 170th, 180th, and 190th inning pitched. (He is at 109 IP now, so he’ll hit some of these).

    — $750,000 for his 200th inning.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) All NFL teams should carry three QB’s; the #3 QB should be a 48th roster spot that is mandated to protect the quality of games, should a starter get hurt early in the game.

Couple years ago in Houston, the Texans’ QB got hurt very early; they didn’t have a #3 QB active, so they had to play a very conservative game, so the backup didn’t get hurt. It ruined the game, just made it an awful football game to watch.

NFL teams are all rich as hell; spend a few bucks and activate three QB’s every week.

    12) Josh McCown is the veteran QB the Jets hope will mentor rookie Sam Darnold; McCown’s daughter is six months younger than Darnold.

    11) There are only five players who have hit 100+ homers for three different teams: Reggie Jackson, Alex Rodriguez, Jim Thome, Darrell Evans and Adrian Beltre.

Fred McGriff hit 100+ homers for Atlanta and Toronto, “only” 99 for Tampa Bay.

    10) When Kenta Maeda made his 20th start of the season for the Dodgers Friday night, it earned him a $1M bonus. He earns another $1.5M if/when he gets to 25 starts, but even though the Dodgers are in a tight pennant race, he’s going to the bullpen after his recent struggles.

Hyun-jin Ryu will take Maeda’s turn in the rotation Wednesday.

    9) David Wright played in a minor league rehab game Sunday; the 35-year old Wright hasn’t played in major league game since May 27, 2016. He went 0-3.

    8) Former major league pitcher Esteban Loaiza pled guilty Friday to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. Authorities found about 20 kilograms of cocaine in a house he was renting. Loaiza is facing a minimum of 10 years in prison with a maximum of life. He’ll be sentenced on November 2.

46-year old Loaiza pitched in the majors for 14 years, went 126-114; he earned a total of $43,734,000 as a major league player. Now he is looking at a minimum of 10 years in jail.

    7) Makes me laugh when you see ballplayers wearing their sunglasses on their hats on a sunny day. Not going to help you much there, buddy.

    6) Sounds like Chad Kelly has moved ahead of Paxton Lynch on the Broncos’ depth chart at QB. Kelly is an Ole Miss alum who is also Jim Kelly’s nephew- he is Case Keenum’s backup, for now.

    5) Saw something Friday I haven’t seen much; Nationals’ OF Juan Soto got picked off first twice in the same game, once by the pitcher, once by the catcher. When you lose 3-2, getting picked off twice isn’t ideal.

    4) I’m guessing there are more kick returns in NFL exhibition games than in regular season games; say you’re a guy trying to make the roster as a special teamer. Taking a knee in the end zone ain’t getting you on a roster, so you run the ball out of the end zone and try to make a big play so you get noticed.

In the regular season, a returner takes the ball out of the end zone and screws up his team’s field position, you’re going to get cut. You take a knee, your club gets the ball on the 25 and you keep your job. Once you have a job, you become conservative to keep it.

    3) San Francisco Giants retired Barry Bonds’ #25 Saturday night; I’m neutral on Bonds, but any event with Willie Mays and Willie McCovey present is automatically a cool event.

    2) Is the PGA Tour in trouble? Every week, no matter what happens, we get “Tiger Woods shot a 73, finished at 4-under par. Oh by the way, Player X shot 62 on Sunday and won by six strokes”, as if every other golfer is an afterthought.

If Eldrick Woods never wins another golf tournament, what happens to the PGA Tour? The guy will be 43 in December; he is on the downside of his career, no matter what. Golf had its heyday when Woods was unstoppable, but that was a long time ago.

Maybe all the writers covering golf are fearful their gravy train could be de-railed when Woods is finished playing, so they’re hoping like hell he can regain his winning touch.

    1) Maryland put its head coach, two athletic trainers and a strength coach on administrative leave as the school reviews circumstances surrounding the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair June 13.

It isn’t the most important thing, but hard to believe the coach is going to keep his job after this debacle. Not sure why stuff like this still happens, but it does.

Toronto Over 12-5 past 17 games

              Another Double Dip

The Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves will hook up for a day-night doubleheader to kick off the new week on Monday. The Braves just took part in a double dip on Aug. 7 in Washington, splitting the pair in D.C. Atlanta also host N.Y. Mets back on May 28, splitting that twin bill, too. This will be Miami's first doubleheader of the 2018 season. They swept their only doubleheader of the 2017 season in Philadelphia on Aug. 22. They're also 4-0 in their past four Game 2s of a double dip dating back to the 2013 season, and they haven't been swept in their past seven doubleheaders since losing a pair in Arizona on Aug. 22, 2012.

This season there have been a total of 25 doubleheaders to date, with a sweep in just five of those twin bills (20 percent). The home team has swept just two of the double dips.

Total bettors will be interested in the 'over' in this Nationa League East battle. The 'over' is 5-2 in the past seven meetings in Atlanta, and 41-19-3 in the past 63 meetings overall. In addition, Miami has won just once in the past six tries against Atlanta, and they're 0-4 in their past four trips to SunTrust Park in the northern suburbs. The over is also 13-6-1 in Miami's past 20 games on the road, while going 4-1 in the past five opening games of a doubleheader for Atlanta. The over is also 5-2 in their past seven opening games of a new series, 3-1-1 in the past five against the NL East and 6-1 in their past seven at home against a team with a road winning percentage of .400 or less.

              Looking Ahead

              Monday, Aug. 13

The Tigers will host the White Sox at Comerica Park on Monday. Detroit hasn't had a lot of luck against anyone lately, going 12-32 across the past 44 games overall, and just 18-41 in their past 59 openers of a new series. They're also a dismal 41-86 in their past 127 tries against right-handed starting pitching, so they do not appear to be a good play on Monday. However, the White Sox are 11-23 in their past 34 against AL Central foes, 3-7 in their past 10 on the road against teams with a losing record and 19-45 in their past 64 on the road against teams with a winning home mark. They're also 2-7 in Reynaldo Lopez's past nine road assignments, and 1-5 over his past six starts overall. In addition, the White Sox have dropped four in a row against the Tigers, and they're 21-51 in their past 72 forays into Comerica.

Diamondbacks RHP Zack Greinke will battle venerable Rangers RHP Bartolo Colon in interleague action at Globe Life Park in Arlington. The Snakes have rattled off 19 wins over their past 28 games on the road, including a 10-3 mark in the past 13 on the road against teams with a losing overall record. Arizona is also 7-3 in the past 10 starts by Greinke, while going 6-0 in their past six road outings by the right-hander. The D-Backs are also 21-6 in the past 27 starts against teams with a losing overall mark. Arizona has had great success with Greinke on the hill in interleague games, too, going 9-4 in his past 13 assignments vs. AL. Texas has been a tough out lately, winning five of their past seven home games, and they're 5-2 in their past seven vs. RHP, too. They're also 5-2 in their past seven interleague games, and 21-8 in their past 29 interleague home battles against teams with a winning overall mark.

In Los Angeles, Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner and Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw square off in the opening game for these rivals. This pitching matchup would normally be one of the premier matchups of the season, but both pitchers haven't resembled themselves this season due to a myriad of injuries. After a slow start, though, Kershaw is rounding into form with wins in four of his past five decisions while posting seven straight quality starts. Like Kershaw, MadBum enters this game with a .500 record overall, but he has pitched better of late. He lost his previous start at Dodger Stadium back on June 16, but he posted a quality start in the outing.

The Giants have won nine of MadBum's past 29 starts, while going 1-4 in the past five road outings with the lefty on the hill. The Giants are 5-11 in Bumgarner's past 16 starts against teams with a winning road record, too. The Dodgers have won 47 of Kershaw's past 58 inside the NL West while going 38-14 in his past 52 against teams with a winning overall mark. L.A. is 4-0 in the past four when Kershaw squares off against Bumgarner, while the Dodgers are 4-1 in Kershaw's past five overall against San Francisco. The Giants are 1-6 in MadBum's past seven road outings in L.A., while going 2-8 in his past 10 overall against the Dodgers.

              Weather Report

The precipitation should hold off across most of baseball, although the Athletics and Royals could be dodging the raindrops at Kauffman Stadium. There is a 35 percent or better chance of thunderstorms beginning in the middle innings and into the wee hours of the night. Other than that, no trouble spots on Monday.

              Tuesday, Aug. 14

The Indians head down Interstate 71 to battle the Reds in Ohio's interleague tussle. OK, they're probably flying a charter. It will be Corey Kluber's first start against Cincinnati this season. He is 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA in two starts against the Reds since the start of the 2015 season. He doesn't face them often, but he has been good when asked to go against the 'Nati.

Mariners LHP James Paxton will take the ball in Oakland for a key AL West series against RHP Mike Fiers and the A's. The southpaw from British Columbia was dominant in his only start againts the Athletics earlier this season, scattering five hits with one walk and a season-best 16 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings back on May 2. He is 1-0 with a 3.64 ERA in five outings against the A's since the start of the 2015 season, striking out 41 batters over just 29 2/3 innings.

Dodgers LHP Alex Wood (hamstring) will come off the 15-day disabled list to face the Giants on Tuesday night. He'll likely have some kind of a pitch count or innings ceiling upon his return. He is 1-1 with a 2.29 ERA over 19 2/3 innings across three starts this season against San Francisco, and the Giants are hitting a paltry .155 against him. He is 3-2 with a 3.63 ERA over nine appearances (seven starts) against the Giants since the start of the 2015 season.

              Weather Report

The start of the Rays-Yankees game might be delayed slightly by rain, as there is a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. The rain will taper off early in the evening, so a postponement is unlikely.

The two Show-Me State MLB venues will be dealing with weather, and a postponement in the Jays-Royals game is likely. In St. Louis, the contest should get underway, but that weather affecting Kansas City will blow east and arrive by the middle innings, with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms from 8pm CT on into the night.

Precip won't be a problem in Oakland, but the Mariners and A's will be battling a 10-13 mph jetstream blowing out to the right-center field power alley.

                      Monday, August 13

                      Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                      Streaking:
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (5-5, 2.58 ERA, $-1055)

Most people are calling this a down year for “The Claw”, but that pretty much tells you how awesome he has been over the course of his career. Better yet, he is warming up in the summer months since returning from his nagging back injury.

Since returning from the DL at the end of June, Kershaw has pitched to 2.19 ERA and a 0.9527 WHIP over eight starts, while punching out 42 batters, compared to just seven walks. Kershaw and the Dodgers are -205 home faves tonight against the Giants.

                      Slumping:
                      Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (1-9, 6.19, $-1248)

Ahh...Homer Bailey. Where do we begin? How about the fact that he's terrible and it makes no sense that he still has a job as a major league starting pitcher.

Bailey comes into Monday's start with a team win/loss record of 1-14 on the season and is the worst money starter in Major League Baseball, costing bettors 12.48 units thus far in 2018. In his last start he was piped by the lowly Mets for five runs in just 3.1 innings of work. Be better Bailey.

Homer and the Reds are +160 underdogs at home tonight against Mike Clevinger and the visiting Cleveland Indians.

                      Monday Weather

The only stadium across Major League Baseball that could be impacted by wind is Ricky Henderson Field at Oakland Coliseum where the wind is expected to be blowing out to right-center field at 12-14 miles per hour tonight when the A's welcome the Mariners.

This is a huge game in the American League playoff picture and we like the home team, and their ace Sean Manaea, at -125. Also, look for them to jump on Marco Gonzales early in order to avoid the dominant Mariners late inning bullpen - with the wind the Over 4.5 in the five five innings should be in play.

                      Consistant Mikolas

When you see St. Louis Cardinals' right-hander Miles Mikolas pencilled in as the starting pitcher you can certainly expect a consistantly solid performance. Mikolas has not allowed more than three runs in a start since June 18, and in those nine starting assignments he has been credited with a Quality Start seven times...and seven Cardinals' victories.

The Cards have visions of sneaking into the playoffs in the National League and Mikolas has quietly emerged as the ace of their starting staff. Today he will face a pissed off Nationals team who were Boted out of Chicago on national television last night via the rare walkoff grand slam.

Look for Mikolas and the Cards to own the early innings of this game as the Nats attempt to make sense of what happened to them last night. Cardinals first five innings (-155), first team to score - Cardinals (-110), and take a flier on the 3 inning runline - Cardinals -1.5 (+240).
                      1st Inning Lefty Dominance

Getting to the park late for tonight's game between the Giants and Dodgers in Los Angeles? You probably won't miss much. Both of tonight's starting pitchers have been positively stingy in the opening inning so far this season.

Madison Bumgarner has yet to allow a first-inning run through 12 starts, and has limited opponents to a .143/.250/.190 slash line over that span. Clayton Kershaw has been nearly as good, boasting a 1.59 ERA with a .153/.219/.220 slash.

Bettors and fans alike shouldn't be surprised to see both teams put up nothing but zeroes at the plate in the first inning. Under 2 first inning hits looks solid at -120.
