    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

    — Cleveland Indians are 27-8 vs division rivals Royals-Tigers-White Sox; they’re 37-42 vs everyone else.

    — Memo to NFL officials: don’t call taunting penalties!!!!

    — Browns went 4-0 in preseason LY, then went 0-16 in games that count.

    — Why do the Browns’ jerseys say “Cleveland” on them? They look like damn high school jerseys.

    — For next four weeks, daytime TV consists on re-runs of NFL preseason games. This is good.

    — There was a delay in the White Sox game Wednesday night because a moth flew into the ear of home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman, and it needed to be removed.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: NFL games with interesting subplots:

Week 1: Falcons @ Eagles: Philly beat Atlanta 15-10 in playoffs LY, went on to win their first Super Bowl title, with their backup QB playing- now Carson Wentz is back under center. Falcons lost Super Bowl two years ago. Matt Ryan is from Philly.

Week 2: Dolphins @ Jets: If I owned the Dolphins, would damn sure want to know how the hell we’re 1-6 in our last seven games against the Jets? Miami lost last three visits to the Swamp, by 38-20/34-13/20-6 scores. Will Sam Darnold be the Jets’ QB by then?

Giants @ Cowboys: Big Blue visited Dallas in Week 1 four of the last five years; they have to wait until Week 2 this year. This matchup must get consistently high TV ratings, but an NFC East squad won the Super Bowl last year, and it wasn’t either one of these teams.

Week 3: Titans @ Jaguars: Jacksonville made playoffs LY for first time in 10 years, but they got swept by the Titans, 37-16/15-10. Jaguars were +10 in turnovers last year, but were -5 vs Tennessee- they scored only two offensive TD’s in 26 drives against the Titans.

Patriots @ Lions: Matt Patricia is the Lions’ new coach; he’s come a long way from his days as a college student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), located in Troy, NY, just over the river from Armadillo World HQ. This matchup vs Brady/Belichick is the NBC Sunday night game.

Week 4: Chiefs @ Broncos: Kansas City is starting Patrick Mahomes at QB; he is basically a rookie- his only start was a 27-24 win here LY. Four of the Chiefs’ first six games this year are on road, at Chargers, Steelers, Broncos, Patriots. Tough start for a young QB.

Week 6: 49ers @ Packers: Same thing for the 49ers; four of their first six games are on the road, at Vikings, Chiefs, Chargers, Packers. Was 49ers’ strong finish LY a sign of future promise, or were they merely passing tired horses? By time this game is over, we may know.

Week 7: Chargers @ Browns: Cleveland is 1-31 the last two years; they beat Chargers 20-17 here in Week 16 of 2016 for the only win, then lost to them 19-10 (+14) in Carson LY. Chargers are on their way to London after this game, for a 6:30am PST game with the Titans in Week 8.

Week 8: Saints @ Vikings: I’m guessing New Orleans has this game circled on their calendar, after their defensive meltdown at the end of last year’s 29-24 playoff loss on this field.

Week 9: Raiders @ 49ers: “I could fly to LA for a haircut faster than I could drive to Santa Clara” Mark Davis is moving his team to Las Vegas because he didn’t want to share this stadium with the 49ers. Well, he has to drive to Santa Clara for this Thursday night game.

Week 12: Six NFC teams are playing on Thanksgiving: Bears-Lions, Redskins-Cowboys and Falcons-Saints. Smart to have divisional games on Thursdays, with less prep time.

Jaguars @ Bills: Last year’s unlikely playoff game: Jaguars 10, Bills 3. Buffalo made playoffs for first time in 19 years, then sent their QB packing. Interesting decision; was it smart? Visiting Buffalo on Thanksgiving weekend means cold weather will probably be a factor.

Week 13: 49ers @ Seahawks: Richard Sherman’s return to Seattle is a Sunday night game.

                Friday's Diamond Notes
                Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Indians (9-4 last 13)

Cleveland finished off a seven-game homestand by compiling a 5-2 record, capped off by a 5-4 victory over Minnesota on Thursday. The Indians extended their lead atop the AL Central to 11 games over the Twins, the largest advantage in all of baseball. Cleveland is set to play its fifth consecutive series against a team with a losing record, as the Tribe is 4-0 in the past four series since dropping two of three at home to the Pirates in late July.

The Indians head to Chicago to take on the struggling White Sox, who were just swept at home by the Yankees. Cleveland pulled off a three-game home sweep of Chicago in June, outscoring the White Sox, 24-5. Shane Bieber heads to the hill for the Tribe in Friday’s opener as the right-hander ended a two-start skid by beating the Angels in his last outing. Bieber has not faced the White Sox this season, who are 2-7 in their past nine home contests.

Coldest team: Rockies (3-8 last 11)

Colorado rolled to a 13-2 stretch at Coors Field from July 2 through August 6. The Rockies have slipped up lately by dropping the final two games to the Pirates and falling to the Dodgers on Thursday, 8-5. Since sweeping Oakland at home in late July, the Rockies have dropped eight of their last 11 games, including three straight series losses to the Cardinals, Brewers, and Pirates.

Jon Gray takes the mound for Colorado tonight as the Rockies have won six straight starts made by the right-hander. Gray has tossed at least seven innings in each of his past four outings, while all four wins came against teams with winning records. Gray has not faced the Dodgers this season, but he beat Los Angeles twice last season as a heavy underdog.

Hottest pitcher: Zack Wheeler, Mets (6-6, 3.89 ERA)

New York went through an eight-game stretch from May through mid-June in which Wheeler took the mound and the Mets lost eight times. However, Wheeler has turned things around lately by winning four straight starts, while the Mets are 5-0 in his past five outings. The right-hander hasn’t allowed a run in his last two trips to the hill in victories over the Pirates and Braves, while the Mets are 4-0 in his past four starts at Citi Field following an 0-8 start in Wheeler’s first eight home starts. Wheeler faces the Marlins tonight in Miami as he is 1-1 in two starts against their division rival this season.

Coldest pitcher: Dylan Bundy, Orioles (7-10, 4.38 ERA)

It’s easy to point to Baltimore as a cold department candidate for anything all season as it owns a 35-80 record. Bundy leads the O’s in victories with seven, but has won once in his last five starts. The right-hander pitched well in his last outing at Texas by allowing two runs in six innings, but the Orioles lost, 3-1. The Orioles host the Red Sox tonight as Baltimore has lost all three starts made by Bundy this season against Boston.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (5-1 last six)

San Diego returns home following a successful road trip (by their standards) as the Padres posted a 4-3 record against the Cubs and Brewers. The offense busted out on the back-end of the trip as the Padres plated 29 runs in the final three wins, including an eight-spot in Thursday’s 8-4 triumph at Milwaukee. The Padres host the Phillies tonight as San Diego is riding a 10-game losing streak at Petco Park. Jacob Nix makes his Major League debut tonight for the Padres as he faces a Phillies’ squad that saw the UNDER cash in all three games at Arizona.

Biggest UNDER run: Athletics (9-2 last 11)

Oakland picked up a split with the Dodgers on Wednesday as the offense did just enough in a 3-2 win. The A’s have allowed three runs or fewer in eight of the past nine games to help out this current UNDER run, but Oakland hits the road for the first time since getting swept at Colorado last month and scoring four runs in three losses. The A’s travel south to Anaheim to face the Angels, who are riding a 4-1 UNDER stretch themselves. Southpaw Brett Anderson is coming off his best start of the season for Oakland by tossing seven scoreless innings in an extra-innings victory over Detroit last Friday.

Matchup to watch: Mariners vs. Astros

Seattle rebounded from a pair of losses at Texas to rack Justin Verlander early in Thursday’s 8-6 triumph at Houston. The Mariners are slowly slipping down the Wild Card standings in the American League, but Seattle struck for six runs off Verlander in two innings to help James Paxton beat Houston for the fourth time this season.

The Astros fell to 2-5 in their last seven home series openers as they try to rebound tonight behind Gerrit Cole. The Houston right-hander is coming off a pair of losses to the Mariners and Dodgers his last two times out, while allowing four hits and two earned runs in 6.2 innings of a 2-0 defeat at Safeco Field on July 30. The Astros have won eight of Cole’s 10 starts at Minute Maid Park this season, but Houston hasn’t won at home since before the All-Star break.

Mike Leake counters for Seattle, as the Mariners have lost five of his past seven starts. Leake is coming off four consecutive quality starts, while picking up a no-decision in a 6-3 home win over the Blue Jays his last time out. Seattle has fared well in Leake’s starts away from Safeco Field this season by posting a 7-3 mark, including four wins as an underdog of +140 or higher.

Betcha didn’t know: The Cardinals head to Kansas City for the battle of I-70 tonight. St. Louis has struggled in road series openers recently by going 0-4 in his past four opportunities. The Royals avoided the sweep to the Cubs by blanking Chicago on Wednesday, 9-0, but Kansas City has put together a 2-8 record this season in series openers off a win.

Biggest public favorite: Yankees (-210) vs. Rangers

Biggest public underdog: Blue Jays (+100) vs. Rays

Biggest line move: Twins (-108 to -118) at Tigers

                  MLB

                  Friday, August 10

                  Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                  Streaking:
Masahiro Tanaka, New York Yankees (9-2, 3.76 ERA, $52)

The Yankees were looking to boost their rotation at the trade deadline and they kind of did that with the acquisitions of JA Happ and Lance Lynn. But the biggest boost to their rotation has been there all along. Masahiro Tanaka has been absolutely dealing since the All-Star break.

The Japanese right-hander has a ridiculous 0.46 ERA and an 0.81 WHIP in three starts since the break. His strikeouts are also way up, punching out 26 batters compared to just four walks. Tanaka and the Yanks are big -220 home favorites tonight against the Rangers.

                  Slumping:
Burch Smith, Kansas City Royals (1-3, 6.41 ERA, $-300)

Burch Smith is living his dream. Five years after getting called up for a cup of coffee with the Padres in 2013, Smith is back in the Majors, and now starting for the Royals. The downside? He’s starting for the Royals.

The career minor-leaguer was called up as a reliever, but the Royals have since made him a starter and it hasn’t gone well. Smith has an 8.27 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in five starts. To be fair to Smith though, pretty much very Royal has been slumping all season. Smith and the Royals are +133 home underdogs going up against the in-state rival Cardinals.

                  A Sneaky Under

According to our consensus, the Over 8.5 in this afternoon's Nationals-Cubs game is the most popular total play of the day. But we think the other side is a sneaky good play. And here's why.

Both Jeremy Hellickson and Kyle Henricks are pitching better than their numbers suggest. Plus, here's some interesting trends. The Under is 7-0 in Hellickson's lastseven road starts and 13-3 in his last 16 starts overall. While the Under is 21-4-1 in Hendricks' last 26 home starts versus a team with a winning record.Oh, and the wind is blowing in at Wrigley straight in from center at 10-12 miles per hour for the game.

                  The Windy City

Hitters could be given a hand tonight when the White Sox host the Indians because, guess what? The Windy City will be windy tonight. The forecast is calling for winds gusting out to right field between 12 and 14 miles per hour around first pitch.

Cleveland's starter Shane Bieber has a 4.58 ERA and while Chicgao starter Carlos Rodon has been strong, he usually hands the ball over to a bullpen that ranks 24th in ERA. With the weather assist look at the Over 9 for tonight's game.

Houston, We Have a Home Problem

The Astros are going to win the American League West. Probably. But they're in the midst of a bit of an unthinkable slump at Minute Maid Park, espcially considering their starting pitching rotation.

The Astros have lost five consecutive ball games at home, culminating with last night's shocking outing from Justin Verlander, in what was one of the worst starts of his career and defintely the worst of his Houston tenure.

The Astros have been outscored by 19 runs in those five games. The Houston lineup and staff is too talented for this to continue. They go up against a ho-hum starter in Mike Leake tonight, so look for the Astros bats to bust out tonight. Maybe parlay the Astors with the Over 7.5.
