    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    — Ray Lewis talked/preached for 33 minutes at the Hall of Fame Saturday nite.

    — Lakers’ over/under win total for this coming season: 48.5.

    — Cal-Irvine’s basketball team is playing in a tournament in Korea this week.

    — Advantage of playing in a dome: Milwaukee Brewers have nine off days ahead of them, in the last eight weeks of the season- thats a lot.

    — Browns-Giants play a preseason game Thursday; someone on NFL Network called it “a big game” Its a bleeping exhibition game. Oy.

    — Consensus on New Jersey sports wagering is that Draft Kings is gouging customers with huge money splits. William Hill sportsbooks are better.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

    13) Dodgers-Astros played in the World Series LY; Los Angeles is the 2nd-biggest city in the country, Houston is 4th-biggest. Lot of stars on both teams; you figure thats an easy choice for the Sunday night baseball game on ESPN.

Nope. New York @ Boston. Go figure.

    12) Houston has a young nucleus of great players, yet MLB refuses to promote them. Hell, one of the Astros is married to Kate Upton— show her once an inning.

    Nope. NY-Boston. No bueno.

    11) Mike Schmidt works on Phillies’ TV on weekends; he was saying Sunday how Rob Manfred was talking about ideas to limit shifting defenses- he was talking to Manfred in Cooperstown last weekend, at the Hall of Fame ceremonies.

One idea was not allowing infielders to have both their feet on the outfield grass; another was making teams have two infielders on each side of second base.

My question is this: if infielders can’t be on the outfield grass, will teams have groundskeepers cut the infield differently, so there is more infield dirt and fielders can still play deeper?

    10) Pro tip for watching baseball on DirecTV; if the weather knocks the game you’re watching off because of “weather interference” with your dish, try the Mix Channel (#720). Lot of times, all those games stay on channel #720, even when the game channels are off.

The one exception is Dodger games, which for some reason are never shown on the Mix Channel, no matter how the weather is.

    9) Raiders surprisingly cut K Giorgio Tavecchio, will have a right-footed kicker for first time in a long time. Rookie Eddy Pineiro, veteran Mike Nugent will compete for the job— hard to believe Jon Gruden starts the season with a rookie kicker.

    8) 31-year old Oliver Drake pitched in relief for the Twins Saturday night; he has also pitched for the Brewers, Indians, Angels and Blue Jays this season after beginning the year in the Orioles’ organization. He is the first player EVER to pitch for five big league teams in the same season.

    7) In 2012, when the Oakland A’s made an unlikely run to the AL West title, a utility guy named Brandon Hicks hit two walk-off homers- he played in only 22 games that year.

At 1:40am Saturday morning, a 24-year old OF named Ramon Laureano hit a walk-off single to right-center, giving Oakland a 1-0 win over Detroit in 13 innings. It was Laureano’s first major league game, and his first big league hit. Unlikely moment.

Laureano was a 16th round pick out of NE Oklahoma A&M- he hit .227 in the hitter-friendly AA Texas League last year, but hit .290 in AAA ball this year, before getting the call to Oakland.

    6) If the A’s make the playoffs and they make Moneyball 2, Stephen Piscotty will likely be a featured character; he is from the Bay Area, his mom passed away earlier this season, and he is playing his butt off— he made a diving catch in this game that saved at least one run.

    5) A’s are 57-25 when they hit a home run, 9-21 when they do not.

    4) For me, the coolest part of the Hall of Fame inductions in Canton is that inductees get to pick who introduces them. More and more, family members are being chosen.

    3) Hall of Famer/former Eagle Brian Dawkins is only NFL player ever to recover a fumble, pick off a pass, get a sack and catch a touchdown pass, all in the same game.

    2) Rumors were about this weekend that Angels’ skipper Mike Scioscia will step down after this season. Scioscia has managed the Angels since 2000.

1))This time last year, Washington Nationals led the NL East by 20 games; this year, they’re in third place, six games behind Philly- the Phils lead Atlanta by 1.5 games.

Also, say what you want about former commissioner Bud Selig; the Wild Card has made baseball pennant races way more interesting. NL Wild Card race will be fun to follow.

Washington Under 6-2 past eight games

              Pudge Junior

The San Francisco Giants kick off an interleague series againts the defending World Series champion Houston Astros on Monday night in a good pitching matchup. All-Star RHP Charlie Morton takes the bump for the 'Stros, while the Giants counter with rookie RHP Dereck Rodriguez, son of Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez.

The Astros have won four of their past five games overall, and they're also 4-1 in the past five against teams with a winning overall record. In addition, Houston has posted an 11-4 mark over the past 15 road games against a right-handed starting pitcher, while posting an impressive 38-17 mark across their past 55 games away from home. Houston has also been outstanding against National League West clubs, winning 38 of their past 54 against that division. Houston has cooled off a bit with Morton toeing the slab, as they're just 1-4 in his past five tries against a team with a winning overall record. The Astros are also an impressive 17-3 in their past 20 starts by Morton when working on five days of rest, and they're a perfect 7-0 across his past seven in the first game of a new series.

So what about Rodriguez? D-Rod? Pudge Jr.? He'll get his own nickname soon enough if he continues to pitch well. San Francisco has won seven of the rookie's past eight starts, and they're 4-1 in his past five outings at home. The Giants have been money at home aginst right-handed starting pitching, going 16-5 across the past 21 games. They have had their issues against RHP lately, however, winning just two of their past seven, while going 1-5 in the past six at home. They are also a dismal 2-5 in the past seven interleague battles, while cashing in just two of their past seven against AL West clubs, too.

Total bettors might want to thump the 'under'. The under is 5-2 in Morton's past seven overall, while going a perfect 4-0 in their past four against NL West clubs. The under is also 25-10-2 in the past 37 against NL West foes. For the Giants, the under is 5-1 in Rodriguez's past six apperances, and 4-1 in their past five interleague battles. There isn't a huge history between these sides lately, but the under is 4-1 in the past five meetings, and a perfect 5-0 in San Francisco.

              Looking Ahead

              Monday, Aug. 6

Trevor Bauer and the Indians host the Twins, looking to finally get it right. The boys from the Twin Cities have been a thorn in the side of the first-place Tribe, and they're 4-0 in Kyle Gibson's past four road assignments against the Indians. The Indians, however, are 5-2 in Bauer's past seven against the Twinkies.

There are plenty of Minnesota batters who have had their way against Bauer. Jorge Polanco is 4-for-17 (.235), which isn't great, but three of those hits are good for homers. Eddie Rosario is hitting .364 (12-for-33) with a double, two homers and nine RBI against Bauer, while Joe Mauer is hitting a cool .302 (13-for-43) with seven doubles, a homer and six RBI. Logan Morrison also doesn't have a long history against the Cleveland righty, but he is 6-for-17 (.353) with two doubles, a homer and three RBI against Bauer. The Indians hope Bauer can stay hot at home, as he is 5-1 with a 2.02 ERA across 75 2/3 innings over 11 starts, and the opposition is hitting just .194 against him while he has 97 strikeouts.

Marlins LHP Wei-Yin Chen has some of the wildest splits in baseball. He'll take the ball against the visiting Cardinals at Marlins Park. He is 2-2 with a 2.18 ERA in eight outings over 45 1/3 innings with a .209 opponent batting average at home, and 1-6 with a 10.27 ERA over 37 2/3 innings across nine road assignments. It's a good thing Monday's game is on his home field. He has struggled at all venues since the All-Star break, going 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA in two starts. He'll be opposed by RHP Luke Weaver. The Cardinals are 11-5 across the past 16 on the road with Weaver on the hill, including 5-2 in his past seven away games against a losing team. St. Louis has won nine of their past 11 visits to Miami. The over is also 12-3-1 in the past 16 in South Florida, and 12-3 in the previous 15 meetings overall.

              Weather Report

In Cleveland, the weather is expected to roll in during the middle innings, with a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms forecast at 8pm, bumping up to a 50-50 chance by 9pm. There will also be wind blowing from 9-12 mph out to right field. In the Windy City, the Yankees and White Sox will also face a 40 percent or better chance of thunderstorms starting at 7pm CT through midnight. Those are the only two trouble spots, however.

              Tuesday, Aug. 7

The Braves and Nationals will battle in a day-night doubleheader from Nationals Park on Tuesday. The Nats split a doubleheader over the weekend against the Reds on Saturday, and they were swept by the Dodgers back on May 19 in their only other twin bill. Atlanta split their only double dip on May 28 against the Mets. So far there have been 23 doubleheaders with just four resulting in a sweep. The home team has swept a doubleheader just twice in 2018.

Orioles RHP Alex Cobb will face his former employer, the Tampa Bay Rays, in St. Petersburg. The home fans might give him a very nice welcome in his first time at Tropicana Field in a visitors' uniform. He has lost both of his previous starts against the Rays, although his last outing on July 26 resulted in a quality start, his second straight outing with three or fewer earned runs and six or more innings pitched.

Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez will meet the Rangers in Arlington. The road has been unkind to King Felix, as he is 4-4 with a dismal 7.58 ERA across 10 starts while the opposition is hitting .298 against him away from home. Hernandez isn't overpowering batters anymore, either, as he has just 37 strikeouts over 48 2/3 road frames. He has two no-decisions against Texas this season, but a 6.10 ERA with a .250 opponent batting average across 10 1/3 innings. Elvis Andrus loves facing Hernandez, as he has piled up 16 RBI in 102 at-bats with a respectable .284 batting average.

              Weather Report

There will be a cool jetstream to straightaway center field at AT&T Park for Tuesday's matinee battle between the Astros and Giants. The winds will be blowing 11-15 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph, so watch the 'over' play. Across the bay, the Dodgers and A's will also face windy conditions, blowing 11-15 mph out to the right-center field power alley.

In Cleveland, the weather is expected to pull out around 8pm ET, and there is a three-hour window with favorable conditions before the weather is forecast to arrive again by 11pm ET. This one will be touch-and-go. At Citi Field, precipitation won't be the problem, but winds will be the issue. The winds will be blowing 10-13 mph to the left-center field power alley for the Reds-Mets outing.

In Denver, the Pirates and Rockies could see a passing thunderstorm late in the game, but expect the contest to be mostly uninterrupted.

                    MLB

                    Monday, August 6

                    Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                    Streaking:
Dereck Rodriguez, San Francisco Giants (5-1, 2.59 ERA, $627)

If "Pudge" Rodriguez's kid pitched somewhere in the East we'd be hearing about him constantly, but Derek Rodriguez pitches in the Bay Area where athletes can sometimes get lost in the shuffle. Well, if he keeps dominating his opponents he won't be a relative secret for too long.

Rodriguez is on a trememdous run right now and in his last seven appearances (six starts and a three-inning relief assignment) he's been sizzling with an ERA of 1.70 and a WHIP of 0.8976.

The Giants have won seven of his last eight starts overall and are +130 home underdogs against Charlie Morton and the Houston Astros.

                    Slumping:
Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (1-8, 5.87 ERA, $-1148)

Despite the Reds giving veteran right-hander Homer Bailey a mid-season break to try to get his head straight, he continues to lose baseball games and now owns an incredible team win/loss record of 1-13 on the season. Just imagine what that record would be if he didn't have a two month "DL stint".

Bailey and the Reds don't get an easy assignment today as they roll into Citi Field as +155 underdogs to take on Noah Syndergaard and the Mets.

                    Kansas City BBQ

We have no idea why we used that as the headline for this section, we just really like Kansas City barbecue.

It's back to the American League for Cole Hamels. After one National League start, Hamels and the Cubs travel to KC for some interleague action against Jake Junis and the Royals. Hamels was dominant in his first start with Chicago and could be exactly what the Cubbies need for their 2018 playoff run.

Hamels has had great success in his career at Kauffman Stadium with an ERA of 0.00 and a WHIP of 1.00 in three career starts on the road against the Royals.

With the Cubs' dominant starting pitcher, and one of the best bullpens in baseball, take a hard look at the Royals team total Under 3.5 (-115) and Under 7.5 hits (-110).

                    Arlington Offense

Offense could be the name of the game in Texas this evening as Wade LeBlanc and the Seattle Mariners travel to Arlington to take on Martin Perez and the Rangers. The Rangers can score runs, especially at home where they average 5.36 runs per game on the season. What else can the Rangers do at home? Give up runs, as they have allowed an average of 6.14 runs per game at Globe Life Park.

Rangers' starter Martin Perez has been terrible at home this season with a 7.52 ERA, a WHIP of 2.11, and an opponent's on-base percentage of .444 in four starts.

The total for Monday's game is a lofty 11. If considering the Over look instead at the 7 inning total of 8.5 in order to take the dominant late-inning relief corp of the Mariners out of the equation.

                    Miami Chen

We continue to reference it every time Marlins' lefty Wei-Yin Chen is scheduled to start, but he his really good at home and really terrible on the road. Chen has made nine road starts in 2018 and is 1-6 with an ERA of 10.27 and a WHIP of 1.96. Conversely, he has made eight starts at Marlins Park where he is 2-2 with an ERA of 2.18 and a WHIP of 1.10.

If you're looking to back this trend some plays to consider might be the Marlins to beat the Cardinals at +140, Miami in the race to three runs at +155, or the Cardinals team total Under 4.5 (-120).
