    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the WGC-Bridgestone golf tournament in Akron this week:

    7-1— Dustin Johnson

    10-1— Rory McIlroy

    12-1— Eldrick Woods

    16-1— Jordan Spieth

    18-1— Rickie Fowler

    20-1— Jason Day, Francesco Molinari

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

    13) So I’ve got all my football research material and have been going thru it, getting ready for this season, then comes news that Urban Meyer is on paid administrative lead at Ohio State, so all the information about the Buckeyes goes out the window.

Ohio State’s former WR coach had domestic violence charges against him in 2015; the issue here is whether or not Meyer knew about the incident(s) and did nothing about it.

    12) It is obvious from reports that Meyer’s wife knew about the incidents, and if Meyer is found to have lied about not knowing, then Ohio State might be looking for a new coach soon. Might be looking for a new athletic director, too.

August 1 isn’t a great time to put your football coach on administrative leave. Especially when the coach has a 73-8 record at that school.

    11) Before Meyer took the Ohio State job, he was on ESPN for a year; I genuinely felt bad for the guy, because he seemed incapable of laughter or lightheartedness. I’m serious when I say this, the guy seemed to have zero sense of humor. It was a little eerie.

    Elsewhere…….
    10) Johnny Manziel gets the starting nod for the Montreal Alouettes Friday night in Montreal when they play Manziel’s old team, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats,. Hamilton traded Manziel to the Alouettes on July 22.

    9) Nationals 25, Mets 4— This was an embarrassment; heads need to roll, either the manager or some players- this team has quit, plain and simple. Inexcusable.

    8) Washington must have some serious dissension; they traded reliever Brandon Kintzler because they thought he was leaking info about the team to the press, then they flat out DFA’d Shawn Kelley when he gave up a homer, then threw his glove to the ground like a 10-year old brat. I laughed when I saw it because I’ve never seen a big leaguer do that before.

The home run came in the 9th inning, with the Nationals leading 25-2; go figure.

    7) I guess my next question is this; how much do players care about their individual stats? If you read into the Kelley incident at all, seems like he wasn’t interested in mopping up in a 25-1 game, then vented his frustration on national TV when he gave up three runs.

    6) Cameron Maybin has been in the major leagues for 12 years; he’s on his 8th team. Seattle has acquired seven new players in trades, since the season started.

    5) Giancarlo Stanton’s %age of runners knocked in:
    2018: 12.99% (30.9% from 3B)
    2017: 18.03% (34.2%)
    2016: 13.62% (35.4%)
    2015: 19.32% (36.8%)
    2014: 16.47% (34.4%)
    2013: 13.38% (35.5%)
    2012: 15.17% (32.7%)

In other words, despite being healthy, Stanton is having the worst season of his career.

    4) Cody Bellinger has played 637⅓ innings at 1B, and 255 innings in CF for the Dodgers this season- this is unusual.

Last major league player with 500+ innings in both 1B, CF in same season was Lee Mazzilli with the Mets in 1980.

    3) Wisconsin is the leading producer of cranberries in the United States. Thought you’d like to know.

    2) George Springer left Wednesday’s game with shoulder soreness, which means Altuve, Correa and now Springer are all out of the Houston lineup.

    1) Texas Rangers were in Phoenix Tuesday when they traded reliever Jake Diekman to the Diamondbacks. Diekman took his bags, went outside the locker room and was driven down to the Arizona locker room in the D’backs’ bullpen cart, driven by Baxter, the team’s mascot.

                Thursday's Diamond Notes
                Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Diamondbacks (7-3 last 10)

The National League West race is by far the most exciting heading into the final two months with three teams separated by one game for the top spot. Entering tonight’s play, Arizona and Los Angeles are tied for first place with Colorado sitting one game behind. The D-backs rebounded from a shocking loss to the Rangers on Monday by beating Texas on Tuesday to gain the series split and improve to 7-3 in the last 10 games. Arizona’s offense has scored at least five runs in six consecutive games, while hosting San Francisco and Philadelphia in the next two series.

Zack Greinke has been terrific for the D-backs of late as Arizona has won seven of his past eight starts. Greinke has allowed two earned runs in his previous three outings, while beating the Giants at home in mid-April in his only start against San Francisco this season. Since the start of 2017, Arizona has won all four starts made by Greinke against the Giants, including a 3-0 mark at Chase Field.

Coldest team: Padres (2-8 last 10)

At the bottom of the NL West sits the San Diego Padres, who begin Thursday’s action 18 games out of first place. The Padres have dropped seven straight games overall and own a dreadful 4-17 record the last 21 contests since winning at Arizona on July 5. San Diego suffered through a winless homestand by going 0-5 against Arizona and San Francisco, while finishing July with a 1-12 record at Petco Park.

Things don’t get easier for the Padres as they travel to Wrigley Field to face the NL Central-leading Cubs for a four-game series beginning tonight. The Cubs swept the Padres at Petco Park in July, as Robbie Erlin tries to turn around San Diego’s luck tonight. Erlin makes his third start of the season, while spending the last two months coming out of the bullpen. How long has it been since Erlin won a start on the big league level? September 2015 against Arizona, so it will be a tall task for the Padres to end their skid tonight.

Hottest pitcher: Max Scherzer, Nationals (14-5, 2.30 ERA)

Scherzer is on his way to a third consecutive Cy Young award as he continues to lead the National League in wins, strikeouts, and innings pitched. The right-hander has won four consecutive starts, including a three-hit performance in eight innings and striking out 11 batters in a 9-1 victory over Miami last Friday. Scherzer is nearly a -300 favorite in Thursday’s series opener against the last-place Reds, as the ace didn’t allow a run in the season opening win at Cincinnati as a -195 favorite.

Coldest pitcher: Jason Vargas, Mets (2-6, 8.36 ERA)

It’s amazing to think Vargas picked up 18 victories last season for the Royals as the southpaw owns a bloated ERA of 8.36 and just two wins. Vargas and the Mets are winless in his past four starts, while getting tagged for 10 runs in his last two outings at Colorado and Pittsburgh. The last time Vargas picked up a win came at Atlanta in late May as a +135 underdog, as he and the Mets host the Braves tonight at Citi Field.

Biggest OVER run: Rays (5-0 last five)

Tampa Bay continues its inconsistent play after getting swept by Baltimore this past weekend, but capturing the first two games with the Angels at home. The Rays’ offense has knocked around Los Angeles pitching by scoring 17 runs in the first two victories, while finally getting its pitching back on track by allowing two runs in Tuesday’s blowout. Tampa Bay is still riding a nice OVER streak going into Thursday’s finale as Hunter Wood makes his fourth start of the season. The Angels will be without slugger Mike Trout today, while Los Angeles owns a 3-1 mark to the OVER in Andrew Heaney’s last four road starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (4-0 last four)

Philadelphia seeks its 60th win of the season tonight after racking up 66 victories in 2017. The Phillies welcome in the struggling Marlins as Philadelphia’s offense tries to get back on track. Philadelphia snapped a four-game skid in Tuesday’s 3-1 triumph at Boston, but the Phillies have been limited to six runs in the past four contests. Granted, those four games came away from Citizens Bank Park as they return to the friendly confines tonight where they have scored at least five runs in five of the past six home games. Nick Pivetta is not a candidate to keep this UNDER run going as the Phillies are 7-0-1 to the OVER in his past eight starts.

Matchup to watch: Yankees vs. Red Sox

If the Yankees want to make a run for the top spot in the American League East race, this is the weekend to do it. New York ventures to Boston for an important four-game series at Fenway Park as the Bronx Bombers begin Thursday’s play five games out of first place. Both teams are fresh off home losses in their last game as the Yankees were shocked by the last-place Orioles on Wednesday, while the Red Sox were tripped up by the Phillies on Tuesday.

The Yankees have responded well off a loss recently by posting an impressive 12-1 record in their past 13 off a defeat. CC Sabathia has seen plenty of success against Boston dating back to 2017 as the Yankees have won five of his last six starts against their arch-rivals when the southpaw gets the ball. The Yankees have compiled a 4-1 mark in Sabathia’s past five trips to the mound, which includes an 8-1 victory over the Red Sox in late June.

Fellow left-hander Brian Johnson counters for Boston in the opener, as he is winless in his last two starts in spite of allowing two unearned runs against the Tigers and Twins. Boston’s offense didn’t help Johnson in those games by scoring a total of one run in those defeats. The Yankees own a slight 5-4 edge over the Red Sox this season, but Boston is 2-1 in three matchups at Fenway Park.

                Betcha didn’t know:
The Brewers look to rebound following Wednesday’s walk-off loss to the Dodgers as Milwaukee tries to pick up the series victory tonight. Jhoulys Chacin has pitched well of late for Milwaukee as the right-hander is 4-0 in his past five starts, including a victory at San Francisco in his last outing. Chacin is a heavy underdog opposite Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw, as Los Angeles has won each of his past three starts as a favorite of -200 or higher. Oh by the way, the Dodgers welcome in the Astros in a World Series rematch on Friday, so we wonder if this is a look-ahead spot for Los Angeles.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-280) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog: Royals (+120) at White Sox

Biggest line move: Padres (+170 to +150) at Cubs

                  MLB

                  Thursday, August 2

                  Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                  Streaking:
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (4-5, 2.52 ERA, $-981)

It’s been a rough season for Kershaw backers, but since the calendar flipped over to July “The Claw” has done his best to make up for the rough start.

The former MVP has pitched to a 1.95 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP in five starts since the start of July, with 28 strikeouts to five walks. Kershaw and the Dodgers will try to keep rolling as they close out a four-game set with the Brewers. Los Angeles is currently a -200 home favorite.

                  Slumping:
Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (8-9, 5.58 ERA, $-182)

From one Cy Young Award winner to another, but things could not be going more differently for “King Felix”. The Mariners are positioned to end their lengthy postseason drought, but that has been despite Hernandez’s performance.

The right-hander’s numbers are the worst of his career and it’s getting worse as the season goes on. Hernandez has a 9.24 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP over his last three starts. Maybe a date with the slumping Blue Jays will help. Tonight’s game in Seattle is currently off the board as Toronto scrambles to find a starter.

                  The Rivalry Returns

Arguably the fiercest rivalry in sports begins its latest chapter, as the Yankees and Red Sox open a big four-game set at Fenway Park tonight. The Yankees trail the Red Sox by 5.5 games in the AL East standings, so now is time to start making up some ground.

It’s a battle of southpaws in the opener as CC Sabathia takes on Brian Johnson. Johnson is pitching well and the Under is 13-2-1 in Sabathia’s last 16 starts versus the BoSox. The total of 10 may be a bit 10 also considering the bats of both sides haven’t been as potent of late. Take a good look at the Under here.

                  An Unlikely Over Candidate

When you think about Overs, your next thought more than likely isn’t: Max Scherzer. But that’s exactly what the dominant right-hander has been good for, with the Over going 4-0 in his last four starts. Now this technically isn’t Scherzer’s fault, (he has a 1.29 ERA in those contests) and he obviously sees lower totals than the even good starter, but its still worth noting.

Scherzer is getting over nine runs of support in those last four games and takes on the Reds today. Rookie Tyler Mahle gets the start and he has an ERA of 14.00 in his last three starts. The Nats are motivated, but the Reds offense isn’t terrible. Take a look at the Over 8 here.

                  Under Umpire

Adam Hamari will be calling balls and strikes tonight in Philadelphia when the Marlins visit the Phillies and he is getting the reputation among betting circles as quite the Under umpire. The Under is 34-16-1 in Hamari’s last 51 games behind home plate. That’s a 68 percent cash rate over a large sample size.

In 2018 the Under has cashed in 13 of the 19 games he has behind home plate, seeing an average of 8.4 total runs scored per game. He helps this out with a moderately high strike rate of 64.3 percent. The total for tonight’s fame is 8.5, we’re leaning towards the Under.
