    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Nevada casinos’ net profit in June: (from Nevada Gaming Control)

    Sports betting $20.1M

    Craps $36M

    Roulette $36.7M

    Baccarat $73.7M

    Blackjack $100M

    Penny slots $255M

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Monday night was a weird baseball night; Brewers-Dodgers had a 23-minute power outage in Chavez Ravine, while in Phoenix, a haboob (dust storm) blew thru the desert and caused the lights to go out at Chase Field for a while at the Rangers-Diamondbacks game.

I had to look up this “haboob” thing; it is like a weather front going thru, except it is in a hot, dry area and it has a ton of wind/dust. You learn something every day.

    12) During the delay at Dodger Stadium, Cowboys’ coach Jason Garrett was sitting with Tommy Lasorda- looked like they were talking about how different pitches are gripped. Garrett was holding a baseball while they talked.

    11) NBA is the first major American sports league to sign an official betting sponsor.

Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday that the league has a deal with MGM that will give the gaming company rights to use league highlights, names, logos and its direct data feed, as well as exclusively market itself as the official gaming partner of the NBA and WNBA.

People bet on the WNBA? Wow. If I could accurately predict how women will react to certain situations, I wouldn’t spend 80% of my life writing on index cards. (Its a joke!!!!)

    10) Guy named Charles Robinson covers the NFL for Yahoo; he posted this on Twitter Monday:

“I’ve been very skeptical of Sean McVay supposedly having a photographic memory. When we were talking this week, he recalled our conversation from one year ago and exactly where we were standing when we had it. I’m not memorable. It was weird.”

The Rams’ head coach has a very good memory.

    9) News Item of the Week: “Police are looking for a trio of thieves who stole a shark from the San Antonio Aquarium over the weekend by stuffing it into a stroller.”

Um, why would you steal a shark?

    8) Cubs’ P Kyle Hendricks has allowed 10 first inning home runs this season; no one else has allowed more than eight.

    7) Because of the Seattle Mariners’ trades this weekend/Monday, their AAA farm team in Tacoma had only nine position players available for Monday night’s game, and three of those were catchers. Managing in the minor leagues can be challenging.

    6) Monday night in Boston, Aaron Nola and David Price both went 8 innings, only the 4th major league game this season (27th in last 3 years) where both starters went 8+ innings.

By way of contrast, in 1988, there were 169 such games.

    5) Baseball doings- there were lot of trades Tuesday:
    — Red Sox put Chris Sale (shoulder) on the DL
    — JA Happ has hand, foot, mouth disease, the same viral infection Noah Syndergaard has.
    — Cincinnati Reds traded Adam Duvall to Braves for P’s Lucas Sims, Matt Wisler and OF Preston Tucker.
    — Red Sox traded for 2B Ian Kinsler, giving up their #19 and #23 prospects.
    — Pirates acquired reliever Keone Kela from Texas in exchange for two players to be named later.
    — Pirates acquired Chris Archer for prospects OF Meadows/P Glasnow.
    — Toronto 2B Lourdes Gurriel is out 2-to-6 weeks. He has a high ankle sprain and a Grade 1 left knee sprain.

    4) Detroit Tigers are only team that hasn’t made a trade this season.

    3) Cubs’ 1B Anthony Rizzo got on base 34 times in his first 15 games batting leadoff.

    2) Nationals 25, Mets 4— Washington led 10-0 in the 2nd inning. Wilmer Flores left early with dehydration and dizziness, thats how long he was out on the field.

    1) NFL exhibition games actually start tonight; Ravens-Bears from Canton. Chicago is only team that hasn’t signed its first round draft pick (LB Roquan Smith).

Best and worst MLB starting pitchers to bet on in August
      Marc Lawrence

Since being traded away from Baltimore, this is the time of year Jake Arrieta is at his best. He might not throw as hard as he used to, but he still knows how to get hitter's out.

With the MLB trading deadline closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. The question is which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs? Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify, pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each August over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, make like legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond and enjoy the hot August nights.

      GOOD MONTH PITCHERS

      * Jake Arrieta, Philadelphia Phillies • 15-2 (8-1 A)

Since being traded away from Baltimore, this is the time of year Jake Arrieta is at his best. He might not throw as hard as he used to, but he still knows how to get hitter's out. He, along with Aaron Nola, will keep Philadelphia in the hunt for an NL East title. After giving up 23 homers last year, Arrieta has done a much better job keeping the ball in the yard with just 11 HRs allowed this season.

      Bartolo Colon, Texas Rangers • 13-5 (7-2 A)

Though Colon has enjoyed success in August, he was not 45 years old, playing in a small ballpark like Texas and on a bad team. It would be great to see him finish with a flourish, but the fact remains the Rangers are so pitching deficient, they have to depend on the veteran. Amazingly, Colon has played in the majors the same number of years the Braves Ronald Acuna Jr, has been alive (20).

      Danny Duffy, Kansas City Royals • 11-5 (7-1 H)

After a slow start, the K.C. lefthander had 2.89 ERA in May and June, But July rolled around and Duffy regressed and his ERA is approaching 5.00 again. His command has been awful, already with a career-high in walks for the season and on pace to match or surpass the 27 home runs he conceded two years ago. With this Royals team I do expect this month to be like those of the past for Duffy.

      * Corey Kluber, Cleveland Indians • 14-4 (8-1 H)

The Cleveland right-hander has been very good, but not quite as good as 2014 and 2017 when he won Cy Young's. The biggest reason why is a balky right knee, which has caused him to leave more pitches up than usual and is why he's already very close to a career-high in home runs allowed with two months remaining. Nevertheless, he is still one the best hurlers in baseball and with his experience and the Indians having a mostly favorable slate this month, the winning should continue.

      Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox • 10-3 (6-1 H)

To this point, Rick Porcello's season has been a great deal like previous two. In 2016, Porcello won the Cy Young and was 22-4. Last year, the right-hander was completely the opposite and lost 17 games. This season he's 13-4 and often pitched like he did two seasons ago. But he's also left reminders of how bad he can be with a few incredibly bad performances this year. Expect Porcello to have a fine August, just keep in mind a stinker might also be included.

      BAD MONTH PITCHERS

      James Shields, Chicago White Sox • 5-12 (2-6 H)

It is really a shame to watch Shields end his career this way. The 36-year is on a team in the midst of rebuilding and at this point of his career he no longer has the needed separation in speed between his pitches to make his once feared change-up effective. Add in he's gone from 3-to-1 K/W ratio to 2-to-1 and it's not hard to imagine he and White Sox will keep losing games.

                A 25-Run Outburst

The Washington Nationals released a lot of pent-up frustration in Tuesday's victory against the New York Mets, rolling up a franchise-record 25 runs in a victory. It was also the most lopsided loss in Mets' franchise history, surpassing a 26-7 beatdown from the Philadelphia Phillies back in 1985. Things got so bad for the Mets that SS Jose Reyes came on to pitch for the first time in his career, and he served up two home runs and six runs in his inning of work. These teams will not have a quick turnaround, playing at 12:05 p.m. ET on Wednesday. RHP Noah Syndergaard will be opposed by LHP Tommy Milone. The under is 8-3-1 in Thor's past 12 outings overall, and 4-1 in his past five against the National League East. The over has cashed in five straight at home for the Nats, while going 4-1 in their past five at home vs. RHP. The under is 23-11 in Washington's past 34 following a win, and 35-17 in their past 52 against a righty.

Syndergaard (illness) will be coming back from the 10-day disabled list. He has had his way over the Nats, as the current collection of Washington batters are just 29-for-115 (.252) with one homer, 13 RBI and 31 strikeouts, good for just a .677 OPS. Only INF Anthony Rendon has taken him out of the park, going 8-for-23 (.348) overall with a double, a homer and five RBI. Thor has punched out All-Star Bryce Harper on seven occasions over 21 at-bats, while Harper is good for a double, five singles and two RBI.

                Looking Ahead

                Wednesday, Aug. 1

The over has been the play for the Blue Jays lately, going 5-1 over their past six games and 4-1 in their past five on the road. RHP Marcus Stroman will take the ball for this day game, but the 'under' is 8-1 in their past nine with Stroman on the hill, including 4-1 over his past five road assignments. The under is also 4-1-1 in his past six on the road against a winning side, and 4-0 in his past four overall against teams with a winning overall record. However, the over is 9-4 in the team's past 13 against a lefty. LHP Sean Manaea is on the hill to the home team, and the under is 8-3 in the lefty's past 11 home assignments. The under is also 4-0 in his past four at home against a team with a losing record, and 4-1 in their past five overall. The over is 6-2-2 in Manaea's past 10 at home against an AL East club, however.

LHP Cole Hamels will make his Cubs debut on the road against the Pirates. The under is 6-2 in Chicago's past eight games overall, while going 5-2 in their past seven against a team with a winning overall record. However, the over is 11-4 in Chicago's past 15 against NL Central foes. The over is also 6-2-1 in Pittsburgh's past seven against a southpaw, while going 4-1 in their past five inside the division. The over is also 4-1 in Nick Kingham's past five starts at PNC Park. In this series, the under has cashed in four of the past five. As far as Hamels is concerned, he was turned up in his most recent start against the A's, as a member of the Texas Rangers, and the over is 3-1-1 in his past five. He has been much more effective on the road, and the under is 5-0-1 in his past six starts away from home.

The Brewers and Dodgers will battle again on Wednesday, and the 'under' has hit in the first two games of the series. The under is also a perfect 5-0 over the past five for L.A., while going 4-1 in their past five at Chavez Ravine. The under is 28-9 in Milwaukee's past 37 games overall, while going 6-0 in Chase Anderson's past six against the NL West and 13-3-1 in his past 17 road outings. The under is 22-8-2 in the past 32 starts overall for C.A., too. However, the over is 9-4 in Milwaukee's past 13 against left-handed starting pitching. As far as L.A. is concerned, the over has hit in five of Rich Hill's past six overall at home, while going 6-1 in his past seven against teams with a winning overall record. The over is also 9-0 in Hill's past nine after recording a quality start in his most recent appearance. The over is 10-3 in Hill's past 13 starts overall, too, but the under is 6-0 in the past six in this series in L.A., and 7-2 in the past nine overall.

                Betting On The Wind

The wind is not expected to be a factor in any of the MLB ballparks on Hump Day, blowing at 10 mph or less in each venue.

                Thursday, Aug. 2

Angels LHP Andrew Heaney takes the ball against the new-look Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday afternoon. The over has cashed in three of his past four appearances on the road.

Cardinals RHP Miles Mikolas has seen the under connect in seven of his past eight starts at Busch Stadium II, while the over has hit in four of his past five starts overall. In addition, the over is 11-5 in the past 16 overall fort he Cards, and 8-3 in their past 11 vs. RHP. The over is also 8-3 in their past 11 against a winning side, and 5-1 in their past six at home vs. RHP.

It's lefty vs. lefty when Robbie Erlin and Mike Montgomery lock horns at the Friendly Confines. The over is 4-1-1 in San Diego's past six against LHP, and 4-1 in Erlin's past five against a team with a winning overall record. For Chicago, the under is 4-1 in their past five at home against a lefty, while going 5-2 in their past seven overall against southpaws. In addition, the under is 5-1 in Montgomery's past six at home against a team with a losing record, and 4-0 in his past four when working on five days of rest.

The Brewers and Dodgers complete their four-game set with a solid pitching matchup. RHP Jhoulys Chacin and LHP Clayton Kershaw will hook up. The over is a perfect 4-0 in Chacin's past four road outings, and 6-1 in his past seven overall. The over is also 9-4 in Milwaukee's past 13 against left-handed starting pitchers, and 41-18 in their past 59 on the road against southpaws. For the Dodgers, the under is 5-1 in Kershaw's past six working on five days of rest, while the over is 5-2 in his past seven at home. However, the under is 18-8-1 in the past 27 at home against a team with a winning overall mark.

                Betting On The Wind

The winds will be kicking at 11-13 mph blowing from home plate to left field at Guaranteed Rate Field for the Royals-White Sox matinee. The wind will also be blowing out from 10-13 mph from home plate to straightaway center field at Citizens Bank Park for the battle between the Marlins and Phillies, so watch the over there.

In D.C., the Reds and Nationals will be battling some raindrops. If they do squeeze the game in, the winds will be howling from 11-14 mph from home plate to the left-center field power alley. The same holds true for the Braves-Mets game, which has a jetstream at 11-14 mph to the left-center field power alley. At Fenway, the winds will blow to straightaway center field from 12-15 mph in the rivalry game between the Yankees and Red Sox.

                Friday, Aug. 3

Cubs LHP Jose Quintana takes the ball for the matinee game against the Padres. The under has cashed in three of his past four starts overall. He has been knocked around at home this season, however, posting a 5.02 ERA over 43 innings across eight home starts, serving up seven homers with 21 walks issued.

Marlins RHP Jose Urena will toe the slab against the Phillies at 'The Vault' to kick off a new series. He has a 3-10 record, but a respectable 4.40 ERA this season. The last time he faced the Phillies on July 15 he allowed five earned runs, four hits and four walks in just four innings in a no-decision as the 'over' connected at Marlins Park.

Athletics LHP Bret Anderson will face the Tigers in Friday's battle. He has made eight starts overall this season, but seven of those appearances have come on the road. His only appearance at Oakland Coliseum was a disaster, as he allowed nine runs - seven earned - and 10 hits across just three innings with three walks and no strikeouts against the Astros. He has allowed six or more hits in five os his past seven appearances. Despite the fact he has been so hittable, and his ERA is 5.55 overall on the season, the 'under' is actually 5-1 across his past six appearances, and 7-2 over the past nine.

                    Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                    Kevin Rogers

Hottest team: Pirates (14-3 last 17)

Pittsburgh continues its ascent towards a potential Wild Card berth after winning its ninth home game in its past 11 tries on Tuesday. The Pirates held off the Cubs, 5-4 to creep within six games of first place in the NL Central and three games of the second Wild Card position in the National League. In the past 14 games, the Pirates are 11-1 when they score at least one run. Yes, for as silly as it sounds, Pittsburgh has been shut out twice in this stretch and lost a 12-6 decision to the Mets last Friday, but won the other 11 contests when scoring at least once.

The Pirates will square off against recently acquired pitcher Cole Hamels tonight in the second game of their series with the Cubs. Nick Kingham looks to bounce back for Pittsburgh after getting knocked around for six runs and seven hits in three innings in that six-run loss to the Mets last Friday. Kingham has won his previous three starts, while trying to beat the Cubs for the first time in three outings this season.

Coldest team: Marlins (3-6 last nine)

Miami has struggled through the first two games of this series by getting outscored, 16-9 in a pair of losses to Atlanta. In fact, the Braves have scored at least eight runs against the Marlins in four of the past six matchups since May. Miami dropped three consecutive games only once in July, but own a 3-6 record since a four-game winning streak from July 14-21.

Pablo Lopez has seen several ups and downs in his brief Major League career as he has allowed two earned runs or less in two starts, while giving up at least four runs in his other three outings. Lopez has not faced the Braves yet this season, but yielded four runs and nine hits in 5.2 innings of a 9-1 beating by the Nationals last Friday.

Hottest pitcher: Kyle Freeland, Rockies (9-6, 3.13 ERA)

Colorado put together a perfect July record when Freeland took the mound by going 5-0 in his five starts last month. Freeland yielded one earned run or less in three of those outings, while coming off a scoreless effort in a 3-1 home victory over the Athletics last Friday. The Rockies have won each of Freeland’s last two starts away from Coors Field, although he picked up no-decisions at Arizona and Seattle. Freeland is also riding an incredible UNDER run as the Rockies are 8-1 in his last nine outings, even though five of those UNDER came on totals of 10 or higher.

Coldest pitcher: Jakob Junis, Royals (5-11, 5.06 ERA)

Kansas City sits at the bottom of the AL Central as Junis has been ice-cold since the end of May. The Royals began the season with a 7-3 mark in Junis’ first 10 starts, but own a dreadful 1-8 record in his past nine trips to the mound. In five of the previous seven starts, Junis has been tagged for five runs or more, including allowing seven runs in 4.2 innings of a 7-2 setback to the Yankees last Thursday. Junis looks for better run support from his teammates as Kansas City’s lineup has tallied three runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts.

Biggest OVER run: Rays (4-0 last four)

Following an embarrassing weekend in a three-game sweep by the last-place Orioles, the Rays rebounded in Tuesday’s 10-6 victory over the Angels. Tampa Bay allowed double-digit runs in all three losses at Baltimore and while they gave up six runs last night, the Rays got their offense on track after scoring five runs or fewer in its previous six games. Tyler Glasnow makes his Tampa Bay debut following Tuesday’s trade with Pittsburgh for Chris Archer. Glasnow has yet to start a game this season, but knowing manager Kevin Cash’s unorthodox way of starting relievers, that isn’t a surprise that the right-hander will start.

Biggest UNDER run: Dodgers (5-0 last five)

The Dodgers’ offense is nowhere to be found right now as Los Angeles has plated a total of three runs in the last three games. Los Angeles was shut out for the first time since June 20 in Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Milwaukee, while suffering its first three-game losing streak since late June. Rich Hill heads to the mound for the Dodgers this evening as the southpaw has cashed the OVER in each of his last two starts, while receiving 14 runs or support in those victories over the Brewers and Braves.

Matchup to watch: Brewers vs. Dodgers

Milwaukee and Los Angeles continue their four-game series at Chavez Ravine after the Brewers have captured the first two games. Lorenzo Cain’s RBI double in the third inning held up in a 1-0 victory for Milwaukee on Tuesday as a +155 underdog, while left-hander Wade Miley tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed two hits.

Manny Machado’s six-game hitting streak came to a halt on Tuesday, while the top six batters in the Dodgers’ lineup combined to go 0-for-19. The Dodgers have lost four of Rich Hill’s six home starts this season, with all four defeats coming as a favorite of -180 or lower. Hill defeated the Brewers at Miller Park on July 20 by striking out nine batters and scattering five hits in six innings of a 6-3 victory.

Chase Anderson has allowed two earned runs or fewer in seven consecutive starts for Milwaukee, while hitting the UNDER in five straight outings. Anderson picked up a no-decision the last time he faced the Dodgers on June 21, but the Brewers topped Los Angeles, 4-2 to cash as a +150 home underdog. The Brewers have won four straight starts made by Anderson as a ‘dog of +110 or more, but his teams (Milwaukee and Arizona) own a 1-5 record in his last six outings against Los Angeles since 2015.

                    Betcha didn’t know:
Houston ended a five-game losing streak in Tuesday’s 5-2 victory at Seattle. Dallas Keuchel looks to rebound off a loss as a hefty -260 home favorite against Texas in his last start as the Astros have won each of his past four starts away from Minute Maid Park. Keuchel is winless in two starts against Seattle this season, while Mariners’ left-hander Wade LeBlanc is undefeated in nine home starts.

                    Biggest public favorite:
                    Yankees (-270) vs. Orioles

                    Biggest public underdog:
                    Rockies (+120) at Cardinals

                    Biggest line move:
Astros (-130 to -145) at Mariners

                        Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                        Streaking:
Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians (12-5, 3.89 ERA, $14)

The Cleveland Indians are a very good baseball team and you can bet the Red Sox, Astros, and Yankees do not want to match up with them come playoff time in the American League. One of the main anchors of their rotation is, as usual, overshadowed by Corey Kluber and quietly putting together another brilliant season.

The Indians have won six of Carlos Carrasco's last seven starts and in his last four appearances (there was a bullpen gig mixed in before the All-Star break) he owns an ERA of 1.89, a WHIP of 1.11, and a tremendous strikeout-to-walk ratio of 23:4.

Carrasco looks to keep the momentum rolling today in Minneapolis as a -172 favorite against Adalberto Mejia and the Minnesota Twins.

                        Slumping:
Cole Hamels, Chicago Cubs (5-9, 4.72 ERA, $-545)

Cole Hamels makes his Chicago Cubs' debut today and...change of scenery...blah, blah, blah...he's been terrible.

Over his last five starts, Hamels is 1-3 with an ERA of 10.23 and a WHIP of 1.9545. In case you were wondering, those are not good numbers.

Hamels jumps right into the divisional race in the NL Central tonight as a slight -115 favorite in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.

                        D.C. Windbags

The first game on the betting board this afternoon will have the most impactful wind of the day. The Mets and Nationals (mostly the Nationals) combined for 29 runs Tuesday night and will get the benefit of a 13-15 mile per hour wind blowing straight out to center field today.

With Noah Syndergaard making his return from hand-foot-and-mouth disease and Tommy Milone making only his second start of the season, this could definitely turn into a bullpen game by the fifth or sixth inning and may get ugly. Hopefully not 25-4 ugly, however.

"Thor" is a bit of a wild-card in this equation so look at Highest Scoring Period to be after the fifth inning at +160.

                        Safe Bet at Safeco

Wade LeBlanc has busted out in a big way this season and is a big reason why the Mariners are in position to end their long playoff drought. And boy, does he love pitching at Safeco Field. LeBlanc has made 15 starts in his career at Safeco as a member of the Mariners and he has NEVER LOST.

LeBlanc is 6-0 with a 2.67 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP in nine starts in 2018 at Safeco. With Dallas Keuchel toeing the rubber for the opposing Astros look hard at the Under 4 first five innings (-110).

                        Dan, Dan The Under Man

Dan Bellino will be calling balls and strikes in Atlanta this evening where the Braves will host the Miami Marlins for the third game of their three-game series at SunTrust Park. Bellino continues to call strikes at a ridiculous rate (64.4 percent) and continues to cash Unders at record pace at 14-2 on the season.

Look for both Pablo Lopez and Anibal Sanchez to exploit the corners early and get into a groove. Play Under 5 in the first five innings at -135.
