    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    — Congrats to my friend Shane; he got his first hole-in-one last week, playing on a course in Cobleskill. Well done!!!

    — Dustin Johnson won the Memphis Open; he eagled the last hole.

    — Paul Goldschmidt is the first player with multiple extra-base hits and multiple RBI in four straight games since Frank Howard, in 1968.

    — A fan in Oakland caught foul balls with his bare hand on consecutive pitches in the 6th inning yesterday, when Chad Pinder was up. Pretty impressive.

    — NBA Finals Game 4 TV ratings were down 11% from Game 4 of last year’s series.

    — Mets are 3-13 in their last 16 games; in nine of the 13 losses, the winning run scored after the sixth inning. Mets released 1B Adrian Gonzalez after Sunday night’s game.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: wrapping up a sports weekend……

    13) Astros 8, Rangers 7— Houston had men on 2nd and 3rd in top of 9th with two out, tied 7-7. Pitch is thrown, swing is checked and Astros come out of the dugout, claiming the pitcher balked. To this point, no umpire had said a word.

Umpires huddle together, a balk is called, and Astros take the lead. Huh?

I’ve never, ever seen that; a balk being called 3-4 minutes after the pitch was thrown, and for it to happen in a tie game in the ninth inning, hmmmm. Will be curious how the league office spins that call tomorrow.

Rangers are having a lousy year, and when you’re struggling, stuff like this happens.

    12) Padres 3, Marlins 1— Clayton Richard has a 4.40 ERA; he had a no-hitter here through six innings in this game. Marlins are on pace to lose 105 games this season.

    11) Youngest player in NBA Draft is a 6-4 Ukrainian PG named Issuf Sanon, who is only 18 years old.

    10) On the Red Sox telecast Sunday, Dave O’Brien/Dennis Eckersley touched on the debate of who was the best closer ever in baseball. Its an interesting debate.

Living in New York, Mariano Rivera is the obvious choice, but you have to realize that he was a “3-out” closer, he pitched one inning at a time. Brilliantly, but only three outs a day.

Looking back at Bruce Sutter/Rollie Fingers, they often came into a game before the 9th inning and finished the game. In Fingers’ five busiest seasons, he AVERAGED five outs an appearance, meaning on an average day, he came in with one out in the 8th inning, and closed it out.

Something to think about when you’re debating who the best closers were.

    9) Toronto Blue Jays’ #1 prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be shut down for the next four weeks- he has a strained patellar tendon in his left knee.

    8) Knowledge slipping through the cracks; until this year, I had no idea that Paul Giamatti the actor is (former baseball commissioner) Bart Giamatti’s son.

Also didn’t know until recently that Angelina Jolie is Jon Voight’s daughter.

    7) Trailing 5-3 in 6th inning Saturday night, Rangers’ OF Joey Gallo bunted to third base for an easy hit; the Astros put everyone on the right side of the field, defying Gallo to bunt for the hit. I’m wondering what Justin Verlander was thinking when Gallo finally bunted, and how many times does he have to do it before teams modify their shifts?

    6) JD Martinez hit 21 homers in Boston’s first 65 games; he is the first Red Sock to hit that many in their first 65 games since Manny Ramirez in 2001.

    5) Texas Rangers put P Doug Fister (knee) on 10-day DL.

Carlos Correa (side) missed his 4th straight game but isn’t on the DL yet.

    4) Random trivia: In 1944, the Reds had a pitcher named Joe Nuxhall who pitched 0.2 of an inning in the majors when he was a month short of his 16th birthday.

Nuxhall re-appeared in the majors eight years later, and then pitched the next 15 years in Cincinnati- he later became a long-time broadcaster for the Reds.

    3) Colorado Rockies are 5-2 when Chad Bettis starts on the road (4-1, 2.03); they’re 2-4 in his home starts (0-0, 7.76).

    2) Colorado Rockies TV guys had their scouting director on TV during the game Sunday; it was interesting hearing them talking about how a scout thinks and what he sees when he goes all over the country watching games.

These scouts are always on the road; the scouting director said he will be on the road again for the 2019 draft, starting next Sunday. The 2019 draft is 50 weeks away.

    1) Guy in Miami made a nice catch on a foul ball Sunday, while holding his scorecard in the other hand. He was wearing a sun visor. Why would a bald guy wear a sun visor? Got to protect the top of that head.

            Ballpark Figures - Week 11
            Joe Williams

            Streaky Teams (entering Monday)
            Wins and Losses Streak

Colorado 2-8 past 10 games overall
Houston 5-0 past five games overall
Kansas City 1-7 past eight games overall
Seattle 17-5 past 22 games overall
Tampa Bay 1-9 past 10 games overall

            Over/Under Streak
Atlanta Over 5-1 past six overall
Baltimore Under 9-2 past 11 overall
N.Y. Mets Under 6-0 past six overall
N.Y. Yankees Under 6-0 past six overall
Washington Under 11-3 past 14 overall

            New York Minute
The New York Mets and New York Yankees completed their Subway Series with a 2-0 pitcher's duel on Sunday night, going in favor of Seth Lugo and the home team. The Mets managed a total of six runs in the three-game set, while the Yankees scratched out just eight runs. The biggest winners have been those taking New York 'under' bets at the window, as both the Mets and Yankees have hit the under in each of their past six heading into the new week. 'Over' plays might be the way to go as the Mets hit the road, as they start a series in Atlanta on Tuesday. The 'over' was 2-1 in a three-game set from May 28-30 in Atlanta, with the Mets outscoring the Braves 18-13 in the battle between divisional foes.

            Carlito's Way?
The Cleveland Indians will kick off a series against the division rival Chicago White Sox on Monday night at Guaranteed Rate Field (yeah, I know - what a silly stadium name). Carlos Carrasco toes the slab, and has yet to face the White Sox this season. Since the start of the 2015 season, however, he is a dismal 4-5 with a 4.10 ERA and a .249 opponent batting average across 63 2/3 innings over 12 starts with one complete game. Of course, if you look at just his 2017 numbers against the Pale Hose, they're awfully impressive. He was 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in four starts, with one complete game. In other words, he struggles against the ChiSox when they resembled a major league team in the past, but against the current version he has exceled.

            Looking Ahead

            Monday, June 11

The Blue Jays hit the road for St. Petersburg, looking to stay hot against the scuffling Rays. Toronto enters play with a 4-0 mark in their past four games inside the American League East, while going 5-0 in the past five against teams with a losing record. They're also 6-1 in the past seven games on Mondays, for whatever that's worth. However, the Blue Jays have been a different team on the road, posting a 1-5 mark in the past six contests away from home while going 0-6 in their past six tries on the road against a left-handed starter. Overall, Toronto is 5-16 in the past 21 vs. LHP. The Rays are 5-1 in their past six against losing teams, and 5-0 in their past five on Mondays. However, they are 1-6 in the past seven vs. RHP while going 4-9 in the past 13 at home. There hasn't been a lot of separation head-to-head, but total bettors will like the fact the 'under' is 2-0-2 in the past four meetings, and also 2-0-2 in the past four meetings at Tropicana Field.

The Cubs will head up Interstate 94 to Cream City to battle the Brewers. The Cubs have been successful away from the Friendly Confines, winning their past four on the road. They're also 8-2 in the past 10 overall while going 4-1 in the past five vs. RHP. Chicago is also 6-2 in their past eight inside the division. They have rallied behind Jose Quintana, too, going 4-1 in his past five road assignments while going 8-3 in his past 11 starts overall. The Brewers have been hot at Miller Park, winning 16 of the past 21 at home. They're 11-5 across the past 16 against a winning team, too, but just 2-8 in the past 10 home games against the Cubbies. Under bettors will like the fact the under is 4-0 in Q's past four starts against Milwaukee, and the under is 16-5 in the past 21 meetings overall in this series. The under is 10-2-2 in the past 14 for the Brewers at home vs. LHP, and 4-0 in Junior Guerra's past four starts. The under is also 5-1-1 in his past seven starts at home.

            Weather Report
There are just eight games on tap for Monday, and there are no weather trouble spots or wind concerns in the three parks with outdoor stadiums. The other venues have four stadiums with retractable roofs and one fixed dome. Enjoy!

            Tuesday, June 12
The Padres and Cardinals will do battle at Busch Stadium II, and San Diego looks to stay hot against right-handed pitching. They're 6-0 over the past six vs. RHP, while going 9-3 in the past 12 games overall. The Cards have struggled on Tuesday, winning just once in their past five on the day. But they have Miles Mikolas on the bump, and that usually means good things. The Cards are 6-1 over Mikolas' past seven starts, and 4-1 in his past five at home. They're also 6-0 in his past six against teams with a losing overall mark. St. Louis hasn't been friendly to San Diego over the years, as the Padres are 16-45 in their past 61 trips to the Lou, and 5-12 in the past 17 meetings overall.

The Astros and A's continue their series with Lance McCullers Jr. facing Daniel Mengden, who has that bicycle handlebar mustache thing going. Houston rolls into play on Monday with a five-game winning streak in tow, and they're 19-7 in the past 26 games on the road. They're also 12-5 in the past 17 road outings vs. RHP, while going 36-16 in their past 52, including a four-game sweep of the Lone Star State rival Texas Rangers over the weekend. The 'Stros are 7-3 in McCullers' past 10 starts, and 5-2 in his past seven against teams iwth a winning overall mark. The A's have won four of their past five at home, but they're just 1-8 in the past nine tries against divisional foes heading into Monday. Oakland has performed well with Mengden on the bump, winning five of his past six home starts, and four of his past five overall. But their just 2-13 in the past 15 starts against AL West foes with Mengden on the hill.

            Weather Report
The winds will be blowing from 9-12 mph out to left field for Tuesday's interleague battle between the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees, but the good news is that precipitation will not be an issue.

It's the spring, and the weather is always touch and go in Atlanta. Tuesday will be no exception with scattered thunderstorms and chances of rain hovering around 50 percent. If the precipitation is on the higher end, don't be surprised to see this game canceled early since the teams meet rather frequently and there are no scheduling problems as far as doubleheaders down the road.

Atlanta is the only place with precip issues. In Oakland, the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics will be battling gusty winds blowing from 12-15 mph out from home field to the right-center field power alley.

                STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

                Streaking:
Andrew Heaney, Los Angeles Angels (3-4, 3.12 ERA, -$407)

There aren’t many smoking arms taking the bump on Monday, so Andrew Heaney will have to do as our streaking hurler. The 27-year-old lefty is in his first season after Tommy John surgery and the early returns have been pretty positive. Heaney is coming off a complete game shutout against the Kansas City Royals in his last appearance and he has produced quality starts in six of his last seven outings.

Oddsmakers have the Halos as -120 road favorites against the Seattle Mariners with the total set at 8.

                Slumping:
Jordan Lyles, San Diego Padres (2-2, 4.70 ERA, $317)

This big righty gave up 11 hits – including two home runs – and eight earned runs in his last start. He has only two quality starts since becoming a part of the Padres’ rotation at the beginning of May. The Over is 4-0 in his last four trips to the mound.

                MONDAY’S TOP TRENDS

*The Under is 6-0 in Boston’s last six games.
*The Rays are 1-9 in their last 10 games.
*The Blue Jays are 4-0 in their last four games.
*The Cubs are 8-2 in their last 10 games.
*The Under is 16-5 in the last 21 games between the Cubs and Brewers.
*The Under is 8-0-1 in the White Sox’s last nine games.
*The Padres are 16-45 in their last 61 games at St. Louis.

                WEATHER WATCH

It’s a beautiful day for baseball across the country with blue skies and warm weather in the forecast. Lights winds are blowing toward home plate at Marlins Park and Camden Yards.

                  Who's Hot

MLB – Teams on the “Left Coast” (AL/NL West squads)

If you are looking to back some of the hotter teams in baseball right now you'd better steer your eyes westward as it's that division in both leagues that have some surging squads. In the AL West we've got Seattle leading the way with an 8-2 SU record in their last 10 games (12-4 SU last 16), followed closely by Houston (7-3 SU last 10), and the L.A Angels (7-3 SU last 10).

L.A and Seattle begin a three-game set in the Pacific Northwest tonight so something will have to give there, and given Seattle's tougher schedule after this tough series (seven with Boston, three with the Yankees) following this Angels series, the Mariners could be the best candidate for a dramatic downturn in the coming weeks.

Over in the NL West we've got the L.A Dodgers surging back into the race with a 7-3 SU mark over their last 10 games, a number that can be stretched out to a 17-6 SU run over their last 23 games. It's those type of runs many have expected from L.A all year, and with a brief two-game interleague series against the lone AL West team not on a good run – Texas (3-7 SU last 10) – good things could be in store for the Dodgers again early this week.

San Francisco owns the best 10-game mark though of any NL West team though at 8-2 SU, and they do have a big series with those Dodgers this upcoming weekend. But we've also got Arizona (7-3 SU last 10) and even San Diego (7-3 SU last 10) making noise in this division, so keep an eye on those teams as well.

                  Who's Not

MLB – Teams on the “Right Coast” (AL/NL East squads)

The East division in both leagues have some powerhouse squads with the likes of the Yankees, Red Sox, Nationals and Braves all having a great first few months of the year, but the teams from those divisions that everyone knew would be in “tank mode” this year appear to have hunkered down in the basement of thier division.

Miami continues to be bad in the NL, and with a 3-7 SU record their last 10, and with a 6-15 SU mark when you stretch things out further, this is one team that should be on everyone's fade list. This week doesn't start out well for them either as they host the surging San Francisco Giants with Madison Bumgarner on the hill for SF in Game 1 tonight.

The New York Mets managed to snap an eight-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Yankees on Sunday night baseball, but this is another team that should be considered a strong fade. Tanking was not really part of the plan for the Mets this year, but key injuries have hit them hard and with them being a team that's so reliant on the HR ball to score, cold stretches are going to happen.

Over in the AL, it's the Baltimore Orioles (2-8 SU last 10) and Tampa Bay Rays (1-9 SU last 10) bringing up the rear as nobody wearing an Orioles jersey can be happy these days. Baltimore is already 24.5 games out of 1st in the division and we haven't even hit Fathers Day yet. That's downright embarrassing and at 19-45 SU, backing the Orioles on the ML is something bettors do at their own peril. Oddly enough though, the Orioles have already seen significant line movement come their way tonight at home against Boston in what is one of the more puzzling moves of the day.

Tampa Bay also begins the week at home against an AL East division rival with the Toronto Blue Jays coming to town. The Blue Jays just swept Baltimore in a four-game set over the weekend, but despite that, they aren't a very good team and historically have always had issues playing at Tropicana Field. If there was one of these struggling teams I'd look to flip it around soon, at least in terms of getting a few wins over the next couple of days it would be this Tampa Bay team. And quite frankly the Rays better find a way to win their series with Toronto, because on deck they've got the Yankees, Astros, and Yankees again as their next three series'. Yikes!
