CG Technology released spreads for every Week 1-16 game for 2018-19 NFL season. Here are a few of the more interesting spreads:

13) Phil Mickelson recently signed an endorsement deal with Mizzen+Main to wear the company’s apparel on the golf course; Thursday, on a 90-degree day in Florida, he was wearing a button-down long sleeved dress shirt, because the company is pushing those as golf fashion.

Mickelson was even par thru 13 holes; he went +7 on holes 14-17. No bueno.

12) Giants’ coach Pat Shurmur has a son who is Vanderbilt’s starting QB; last summer, Kyle Shurmur spent some time at the Manning Passing Academy in Louisiana.

Thats the same passing academy Josh Rosen went to in 2016 and according to reports, didn’t make a positive impression on the people there.

Pat Shurmur must’ve made a positive impression on the Mannings when they met, or else he wouldn’t be the Giants’ coach right now.

11) Dodgers-Diamondbacks have already played 12 times this season; they don’t meet again until August 30, which is a little weird.

10) Since 2000, 14 major league teams have batted out of order. Some of those included DH-related double switches that got fouled up late in blowouts.

9) AHL is the AAA league of the NHL; good league. We used to have couple of AHL teams in this area; those games were fun to go to.

Wednesday night, Las Vegas Phantoms beat the Charlotte Checkers 2-1 in a 5-OT playoff game that was the longest in AHL history. Charlotte outshot the Phantoms 95-53 but lost.

8) From ESPN.com:

“Footwear company Skechers sued Adidas in federal court Thursday, claiming its competitor created false advertising and unfair competition by funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars in secret payments to high school and college basketball players and their families to wear its products.”

If you’re a lawyer these days and aren’t rich as hell, then you’re doing something wrong.

7) According to people who study this stuff more than me, if the 2019 NFL Draft were today, no quarterbacks would be taken in the first round. Lot can change in a year, though.

6) Back in 1996, when he was 21, new Lions’ coach Matt Patricia was charged in Texas with aggravated sexual assault- the charge was dismissed ten months later, before it went to trial.

Why would something like this be made public now? Patricia has been on national TV dozens of times over the past decade; its like someone with an axe to grind spilled the beans. According to SI.com, the charge is visible on Lexis’s public records database. Why didn’t someone find this a lot earlier than now?

Weird situation. GM of the Lions worked for the Patriots for over a decade; did they know?

Patricia wouldn’t talk much about it Thursday; he’s moving on to mini-camp.

5) Winnipeg 5, Nashville 1— Jets will take on the Golden Knights in the next round after they won a Game 7 on the road.

Winnipeg is last Canadian franchise left in playoffs; Golden Knights are NHL team with most Canadian-born players.

Last Canadian franchise to win Stanley Cup? 1993 Montreal Canadiens.

4) Cincinnati Reds aren’t wasting any time; newly-acquired Matt Harvey gets the start for the Reds in tonight’s game at Dodger Stadium.

3) Cardinals ace Carlos Martinez (lat strain) went on the 10-day DL; he is expected to miss only one start.

2) Red Sox pitcher David Price recently revealed that he plays video games three hours a day, but he denied that video games are why he has a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome.

1) I won’t get into specifics, because I don’t want to get angry e-mails from people complaining about me talking politics, but the shocking lack of decency coming from public officials talking about John McCain, who is very, very ill, makes me want to puke. Simple as that.

The Complete Game: Bullpen success equals MLB moneyline cash

Well, here we are in the middle of May already. This is the point of the Major League Baseball season when we really start to get a sense of which surprising teams are for real and which disappointing teams are in big trouble.

Let me say this: the Los Angeles Dodgers are in big trouble. The Dodgers opened the season as 9/2 co-favorites with the Houston Astros to win the 2018 World Series and their regular season win total was set at 95.5 at most sportsbooks. As of publication time for this article, the Dodgers are four games below .500 at 16-20 and eight games behind the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks. Their bullpen is a mess, Clayton Kershaw is on the disabled list, Corey Seager is out for the season, and who knows when Justin Turner will be back (he actually should be back by the end of next week).

The Dodgers have cost bettors -18.36 units on moneyline wagers this season. Can they re-energize this sinking ship? Eight games back in the division at this point in the season isn’t insurmountable, but there's no was in hell they’re going to reach 96 wins and cash those Over tickets. Sorry Dodgers backers.

Side note: before we get into the meat of this column, this battle between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees in the American League East is going to be a blast to follow all season. These teams are both very, very good.

What to watch for this weekend

This is the spot where I usually focus on one marquee series scheduled for the weekend. This week there isn’t a standout set of games, so I’ll focus on the best pitching matchups for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The most interesting matchup for my eye Friday night is the “old man bowl” with Cole Hamels and the Texas Rangers visiting Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros. Verlander is coming off his first loss since joining the Stros late last season and will be throwing bullets against a weak Rangers lineup. Houston is a big -250 favorite and will roll in this one.

Saturday night gives us Noah Syndergaard and the Mets visiting Philadelphia to take on Zach Eflin and the Phillies. The Mets will likely open as road favorites with Syndergaard on the bump, but “Thor” is apparently saving himself for September and the Mets don’t understand how a batting lineup works. I’ll take the underdogs in this one as Eflin has been dynamite since rejoining the Phillies rotation.

Sunday has Shohei Ohtani in his traditional Sunday afternoon starting slot as the Los Angeles Angels host Fernando Romero and the Minnesota Twins. The Angels will open as big favorites, likely north of -200, but don’t sleep on Romero. This will be Ohtani’s first start at home since being abused by the Red Sox back on April 17, so he will be charged up and throwing darts in front of the home fans. Sunday will be Romero’s third major league start and he has yet to allow a run in his big league career. I love the Under in this game but only if it comes out at 7.5 or higher. I’m not messing with an Under 7 in this spot.

Bullpen blitz

Nothing in baseball betting is as frustrating as getting burned on your Under wager or moneyline bet by a piss-poor bullpen performance. I always handicap bullpens before I get down on a ball game, and while I was digging into relief pitching numbers earlier this week I stumbled upon some numbers that justify my bullpen obsession.

It makes sense that teams with good win/loss records will also have a bullpen that is helping them earn wins. Inversely, it makes sense that shitty teams will have bullpens that are not performing well. What I didn’t expect to find is such a defined "line in the sand" between good and bad.

Currently (Thursday evening) there are 17 MLB teams with records above .500. Of those 17 teams, 15 rank in the Top 17 in team bullpen ERA. So, that means there are only two teams in baseball playing above .500 with below average bullpens: the Washington Nationals and the Colorado Rockies.

In the bottom section of the bullpen ERA stats table we have 13 teams and all of those teams are at or below .500 with the exception of the aforementioned Nats and Rockies.

Not to suggest blind wagers on the top bullpen teams, because I hate blind betting in ANY situation, but these next numbers are staggering.

The previously discussed Top 17 teams on the bullpen ERA statistics table are a combined 353-262 (57.4 percent) and have earned moneyline backers +70.64 units thus far on the year. Even more staggering, the Bottom 13 teams in bullpen ERA are 188-279 (40.26 percent) and are an incredible -97.01 units in 2018.

All of this is just more evidence of why you should be checking out bullpen numbers on a regular basis. If you want to back a team with a bad bullpen, consider taking their "first five innings" odds to, hopefully, take the sketchy relief pitchers out of the equation.

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Justin Verlander, Houston Astros (4-1, 1.17 ERA, $-178)

Simply put, Verlander has been nothing short of dominant since joining the Astros. His last six starts in particular, have been outstanding. In those contests the veteran right-hander has a 0.85 ERA with a ridiculous 0.52 WHIP, while racking up 56 punch outs to just eight walks.

Verlander and the Astros will be big -260 home favorites when they host the Rangers.

Slumping: Matt Harvey, Cincinnati Reds (0-2, 7.00 ERA, $47)

Well, it’s come to this. The Matt Harvey saga in New York has come to an end and what does he get for a fresh start? A trip to Cincinnati. Ouch. (It's actually kind of funny).

As a starter this season, Harvey had an ERA of 6.00. In his final appearance for the Mets, he gave up five runs on three hits and three walks in a two-inning relief appearance.

He gets even less run support in Cincy and gets treated to a mathup with the Dodgers in his first appearance. Harvey and the Reds are currently +190 underdogs.
