Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Mets 3, Nationals 2— Washington 3B Anthony Rendon got called out on strikes his first two times up in Saturday’s game, both on marginal pitches; after the second strikeout, Rendon flipped his bat but didn’t say a word— umpire Marty Foster tossed him anyway, at which point Washington manager Dave Martinez came out and got himself tossed, too.

Steven Matz threw 93 pitches in five innings for the Mets; 30 of them were called strikes by Foster and I’m telling you, it might be a very long time before another pitcher has 30 pitches called strikes in one game— I keep track of this stuff and I’ll let you know. It rarely happens.

But that is why the Nationals were steamed during this game.

13a) OK, I looked it up; I like to look things up. Seven times all of last year a pitcher got 30+ called strikes in a game. Seven out of 2,430 games.

12) Astros 1, Padres 0 (10)- Alex Bregman hit an infield pop-up just in front of the plate with two out in the 10th inning; Eric Hosmer overran the ball, it fell untouched and Houston got a win in a highly unlikely way, with the winning run scoring from second. We might not see another ball like that fall untouched the rest of the season.

11) AAF is a new spring football league that kicks off next February; Orlando is the first city to be named to the league, and Steve Spurrier is going to be their coach, which lends the league instant credibility.

Spurrier coached the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL back in the 80’s.

10) Mets 3, Nationals 2— Mets are off to a very strong 6-1 start. Last time the Mets started a season 6-1 was in 2006.

9) Didi Gregorius’ stats, contrasted between Arizona and New York:
2 years in Arizona: .241 BA, .682 OPS, 13 HR’s in 703 PA.
3+ years in Bronx: .278 BA, .758 OPS, 57 HR in 1,780 PA.

8) Re-watched Jon Gruden’s half-hour QB Camp TV show with Jared Goff today, done before the Rams picked Goff two years ago; those shows are great TV, but now that Gruden is coaching the Raiders, they’re gone for now.

ESPN needs to find someone (Jaworski? Dilfer? Gannon?) to pick this show up and grill these young QB’s. Think it helps the players and it is fun/educational to watch on TV.

7) Angels’ utility guy Nolan Fontana is the grandson of Lew Burdette, who was a really, really good pitcher for the Braves back in the 50’s/60’s- he was 203-144 in his career.

6) Nuggets 134, Clippers 115— LA is 42-38, but they’re eliminated from playoff contention.

5) There was only one birdie Saturday at the 11th hole at The Masters: Jeff Knox, the non-competing marker who played with Paul Casey.

Saturday’s 3rd round scoring average of 71.264 was the lowest 3rd round average at the Masters since 1986.

4) Giants 7, Dodgers 5 (14)— Andrew McCutchen went 6-7 and hit a walk-off homer in the 14th inning; not a bad night’s work.

3) Lot of people got out of Puerto Rico after the hurricanes last summer; so many people left that they they’ve closed 283 schools on the island. Thats a lot of kids that are gone.

2) Top three guys in the lineup for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats of AA Eastern League are the sons of three former big leaguers— Cavan Biggio, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

1) Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Humboldt Broncos, a junior hockey team in western Canada whose bus was in an accident Friday- 15 people passed away. Very sad thing.

Back in my college days, I was student manager of the basketball team; we spent lot of snowy nights in buses in places with hideous weather. My heart goes out to the friends and families.

5-inning or full-game odds? How you should bet the best and worst MLB bullpens

The Boston Red Sox were up 3-0 on Opening Day when their ace Chris Sale left the mound following six innings of work. But the Tampa Bay Rays scored six runs in the eighth inning and won the game 6-4 as +155 underdogs. That was a tough loss for BoSox moneyline bettors, however, that wager didn’t have to end in an L.

Most sportsbooks offer 5-inning odds (grading the game on just the first five innings of action), which would have meant a win for – albeit at a different price – for Boston backers on Opening Day.

Nowadays, most starting pitchers are asked just to get to the sixth inning (or even just the fifth) so the manager can get on the horn and bring in the setup for the setup guy. Relievers are pitching more and more innings and greatly impacting game results because of it.

There were 44 starting pitchers in 2010 who threw 200 or more innings. Last year, there were only 15. It stinks losing a game when your team’s starting hurler pitches great and then you lose the game because the bullpen didn’t do their job.

Team bullpen stats are tools bettors can use to determine whether wagering on the full-game monyeline or the first five-innings moneyline is the best choice. You can feel more confident betting on a team rolling out its fifth starter if its relief staff is holding down the fort and, conversely, you can back an ace for just the first five innings if you don’t believe in the bullpen.

Here’s a quick look at two of the best bullpens in baseball and two of the worst heading into the second weekend of the season.

BEST BULLPENS

Chicago Cubs

Bullpen ERA: 0.69

A four-game set against the Miami Marlins was supposed to be an easy-peasy opening to the 2018 campaign for the Chicago Cubs. The two-time defending National League Central winners and 2016 World Series champions were visiting a city with more Cubs fans than Miami fans, and the Marlins' offseason selloff left a roster closer resembling a Double-A team than one worthy of the big show. Oddsmakers made the Cubs -200 or larger favorites in three of the four games.

Chicago ran out nearly $65 million worth of starting pitching talent including newly-acquired Yu Darvish and came away with just one quality start from the four games. Thankfully, the bullpen was there to clean up the mess. The Cubs avoided embarrassment and left South Florida by splitting the four-game series thanks in large part to the work of their relief staff.

The Northsiders own the best bullpen earned-run average in the majors (0.69) through Wednesday.

New York Mets

Bullpen ERA: 1.16

Mets fans thought 2018 could be a big bounce-back year for their club because of the return to health of the young pitching staff. And, while Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom both look great, the bullpen is a big part of the reason New York is 5-1 after its first six games.

The Metropolitans own the best WHIP (walks plus hits per inning) for a relief staff at 0.94 and closer Jeurys Familia is three for three in save opportunities this season.

WORST BULLPENS

Kansas City Royals

Bullpen ERA: 9.00

Kansas City’s World Series teams from the middle of the decade were built on the arms coming out of the pen. The saying used to go that Royals manager Ned Yost only needed his starter to pitch five innings because the club had shutdown relievers for every other inning.

Closer Kelvin Herrera is still doing his thing, now as the team closer, but the bridge from the starter to Herrera in the eighth or ninth inning isn’t the same. Blaine Boyer is the worst offender. The journeyman reliever has given up four runs in just two appearances this season.

New York Yankees

Bullpen ERA: 6.63

The Yankees' relief staff ranks 26th in the majors but it had to be included on the naughty list because of the preseason hype surrounding the group. The bullpen was supposed to be a team strength for New York with big name arms like David Robertson and Aroldis Chapman expected to close the door in late innings.

Robertson is proving to be the weak link in chain so far. He’s given up four runs in three innings of work and has yet to strike anyone out. The Yankees have also blown two of their three save chances.

Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

Streaking: Tyler Mahle, Cincinnati Reds (1-0, 0.00 ERA, $100)

Tyler Mahle is a dynamic young starting pitcher and the Cincinnati Reds are hoping he can be the anchor of their rotation of many years to come. His first start of 2018 was a brilliant six-inning, one-hit shutout of the Chicago Cubs and in five career major league starts he has allowed zero earned runs in three of those outings.

Mahle and the Reds are currently listed as +135 underdogs in frigid Pittsburgh against Jameson Taillon and the Pirates.

Slumping: Trevor Richards, Miami Marlins (0-1, 10.38 ERA, $-100)

Much like the Cleveland Indians in the movie 'Major League' the Marlins' ownership group has no intention of trying to win baseball games this season - but they're already located in Miami so what, really, is their end game. In Jeter we trust? Nah, not yet.

Right-handed starter Trevor Richards had a disasterous major league debut when he allowed five earned runs on eight hits in just 4.1 innings of work against the Red Sox this past Monday.

Richards and the fish will look to rebound today on the road as +168 underdogs in Philadelphia against Jake Arrieta and the Phillies.
