            • Dodgers clinch playoff berth with 10-6 win against Giants
              September 29, 2018
              By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched baseball's final playoff berth and gave themselves a chance to still win the NL West, getting a go-ahead triple from Manny Machado in the eighth inning Saturday and beating the San Francisco Giants 10-6.

The defending NL champions locked up their sixth straight trip to the postseason, assuring at least a spot in the wild-card game. The Dodgers joined Colorado, Atlanta, the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee in the NL playoff field.

Los Angeles began the day one game behind Colorado for the division lead, and the Rockies hosted Washington later in the day. The regular season is scheduled to end Sunday - if Los Angeles and Colorado finish even, there will be a one-game tiebreaker for the West title Monday at Dodger Stadium.

Machado, the star infielder acquired from Baltimore during the All-Star break, hit a two-out triple off Mark Melancon (1-4) for a 6-5 lead. Max Muncy added a two-run double during a four-run ninth.

Alex Wood (9-7) pitched the seventh for the win and Kenley Jansen closed it out.

              CARDINALS 2, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - The Cubs wasted a solid performance by Cole Hamels, sending the NL Central race to the final day of the season.

The Cubs would have wrapped up their third straight division championship with a victory and a loss by the Brewers to Detroit on Saturday night. Chicago and Milwaukee would meet in a tiebreaker at Wrigley Field on Monday if they wind up with identical records, with the loser then playing in a wild-card game at home on Tuesday.

The Cardinals kept alive their chance for a wild card, but were eliminated by the Dodgers' 10-6 victory at San Francisco. Miles Mikolas (18-4) pitched eight effective innings in his fifth straight win, and Carlos Martinez worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

Hamels (4-3) gave up two runs, one earned, and three hits in seven innings.

              NATIONALS 12, ROCKIES 2

DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Rockies dropped into a tie with Los Angeles for the NL West lead with only one game left, routed by Stephen Strasburg, Juan Soto and the Nationals.

Hoping to hold their one-game edge, the Rockies instead saw their winning streak end at eight. The Dodgers were 10-6 winners in San Francisco earlier to ensure the race will go down to the wire.

With game No. 162 on deck, the Rockies (90-71) are attempting to accomplish something they've never done since entering the league in 1993: capture a division title.

If Los Angeles and Colorado finish tied, there will be a one-game tiebreaker for the West title Monday at Dodger Stadium. The loser will become a wild card.

              YANKEES 8, RED SOX 5

BOSTON (AP) - Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton connected as the Yankees broke the major league record for home runs in a season and reached 100 wins.

Torres' two-run drive in the fourth was the Yankees' 265th of the year and moved them past the 1997 Seattle Mariners. Stanton pushed the record to 266 in the seventh with his 38th homer, a solo homer to left field.

A fan sitting in the seats above the Green Monster threw the souvenir back, and the ball bounced into Stanton as he rounded second base.

New York, which will host Oakland in the AL wild-card game on Wednesday, reached 100 wins for the 20th time in franchise history.

Brock Holt hit a two-run homer for the AL East champion Red Sox, who could be hosting the Yankees again in the AL Division Series starting week. Eduardo Rodriguez (12-5) got the loss.

Lance Lynn (10-10) got the win with three innings of relief. Aroldis Chapman earned his 32nd save.

              ASTROS 4, ORIOLES 3, GAME 1

              ASTROS 5, ORIOLES 2, GAME 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Justin Verlander struck out 10 in six scoreless innings, helping the Astros take the opener of a doubleheader.

Houston shortstop Carlos Correa homered and hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the ninth inning. Will Harris (5-3) worked the eighth and Hector Rondon got three outs for his 15th save.

Verlander allowed three hits and walked one. His next outing will come in the postseason, which begins for Houston on Friday against Cleveland.

Baltimore's DJ Stewart tied it with a three-run homer off Joe Smith in the seventh. Sean Gilmartin (1-1) got the loss.

In the nightcap, Myles Straw hit his first big league homer and Brian McCann also went deep against rookie Yefry Ramirez (1-8).

Jake Marisnick made it 5-2 with a two-run shot in the eighth.

Dallas Keuchel started and went three innings in his final tuneup for the playoffs. Brad Peacock (3-4) worked the fourth and Ryan Pressly pitched the ninth for his second save.

Baltimore enters Sunday's finale as one of only five big league teams since 1900 to lose 115 games.

              RAYS 4, BLUE JAYS 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - C.J. Cron and Austin Meadows homered, powering Tampa Bay to the win.

Rays left-hander Blake Snell struck out 10 in five innings, but failed to win his 10th straight start. He was charged with a run and three hits.

Diego Castillo (4-2) got the win with two innings of relief. Sergio Romo pitched the ninth for his 25th save despite giving up a pinch-hit homer to Reese McGuire.

Snell finished with a 21-5 record and a 1.89 ERA.

Cron's 30th homer got Tampa Bay on the board in the second, and Meadows put the Rays ahead for the first time with another homer off Ryan Borucki (4-6) in the seventh.

              REDS 3, PIRATES 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Michael Lorenzen singled home a run and got his first victory as a starter since 2015, helping Cincinnati snap its seven-game losing streak against Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh has dominated the Ohio River rivalry, going 13-5 this season. The seven-game winning streak was the Pirates' longest against the Reds since 1991.

The Reds let Lorenzen (4-2) make three starts to finish the season after 42 relief appearances. He went 5 2/3 innings and gave up five hits. Raisel Iglesias got three outs for his 30th save in 34 chances.

Eugenio Suarez homered for the second straight game off Jameson Taillon (14-10), pulling out of his slump.

              BREWERS 6, TIGERS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers moved into a tie for first place in the NL Central with one game remaining in the regular season, getting two homers from MVP candidate Christian Yelich to beat Detroit and draw even with the Chicago Cubs.

Yelich turned on an 0-1 pitch from left-hander Daniel Stumpf (1-5) and lined it into the second deck in right to break a 5-all tie in the seventh inning. The left-handed slugger also hit a two-run homer in the third inning of the Brewers' sixth straight win.

The Brewers (94-67) were already assured of making their first playoff appearance since 2011, the last time they won the NL Central. They sure would like to get into the postseason again as a division winner, and Chicago opened the door by losing 2-1 to St. Louis earlier Saturday.

Yelich extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 2 for 3 and driving in three.

Joakim Soria (3-1) got the win in relief. Jeremy Jeffress picked up his 15th save after striking out the side in the ninth

              PHILLIES 3, BRAVES 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Aaron Nola pitched seven shutout innings and Cesar Hernandez had a two-run single in the seventh inning to help the Philadelphia Phillies snap a nine-game losing streak.

Nola (17-6) was stellar in his final start of the season, allowing two hits and striking out eight with four walks. The right-hander ended 2018 with a 2.37 ERA and 224 strikeouts in 212 1/3 innings. He likely will fall short of a NL Cy Young award after stumbling a bit in September.

The NL East champion Braves will play either the Los Angeles Dodgers or Colorado Rockies in the NLDS, and Atlanta still could host the series. The Braves (90-71) and Dodgers have the same record entering the regular-season finale on Sunday while Colorado entered Saturday with a 90-70 mark.

Anibal Sanchez matched Nola, giving up three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in six shutout innings.

Odubel Herrera helped the Phillies take a 3-0 lead when he beat out a potential double-play grounder to short.

Seranthony Dominguez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save in 19 chances.

              TWINS 8, WHITE SOX 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Joe Mauer reached base three times and Kyle Gibson capped a season of improvement with six quality innings as Minnesota matched a season high with its fifth straight win.

Mauer had two hits and scored twice in what could be his final homestand after a 15-year career in Minnesota. Mauer has said he'll contemplate retirement once the season is over, but he's showing he can still swing the bat with a strong September.

Mauer, who entered the day with a major league-leading .410 average with runners in scoring position, drove in a run with a single as part of a six-run second inning. He is hitting .365 with eight RBIs in his last 16 games.

Gibson (10-13) allowed one run on three hits and three walks to lower his ERA to 3.62.

Jorge Polanco added three hits and Jake Cave drove in three runs for the Twins.

Chicago starter Carlos Rodon (6-8) was knocked out six batters into the second inning without retiring an out

              ROYALS 9, INDIANS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Adalberto Mondesi hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer to lift Kansas City.

Corey Kluber gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings in his final regular season start for Cleveland while working on a short pitch count ahead of the playoffs.

Indians catcher Yan Gomes left the game in the bottom of the third with an injured right hand after he was hit by Alex Gordon's bat on a backswing as he attempted to throw out would-be base-stealer Mondesi.

After reliever Andrew Miller (2-4) gave up a single to Alcides Escobar in the sixth and a two-out walk to Whit Merrifield, Mondesi hit the next pitch into the left-center stands to break a 3-3 tie. The Royals added another run with consecutive hits by Gordon, Hunter Dozier and Ryan O'Hearn.

              DIAMONDBACKS 5, PADRES 4

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Ildemaro Vargas hit his first home run, got his first stolen base and drove in three runs to lead Arizona.

Vargas hit an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run homer in the fourth, both off rookie Jacob Nix (2-5).

Vargas' homer staked Zack Godley to a 4-0 lead and the Diamondbacks held on to give the right-hander his career-high 15th win.

Godley (15-11) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings, struck out five and walked two. Yoshihisa Hirano pitched the ninth for his third save.

The Padres again pulled within one run when Eric Hosmer homered off Brad Ziegler in the eighth, his 18th.

Nix allowed four runs and five hits in four innings, walked three and had no strikeouts.

              METS 1, MARLINS 1, 13 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Much like the last few years of his truncated career, David Wright's finale was no fairytale at the plate.

Wright left to a long standing ovation before a sellout crowd at Citi Field in his farewell game for the Mets.

The team captain went 0 for 1 with a walk against the Marlins. He was removed after two plate appearances as planned, and on defense he handled a one-hopper to third base with no problem.

Wright joined teammates as they ran onto the field to swarm Austin Jackson, who hit the game-winning double, and then watched as the Mets played a postgame tribute on the ballpark video board. After that, Wright addressed the crowd in a postgame speech that lasted about 2 minutes, 20 seconds.

              MARINERS 4, RANGERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Dee Gordon drove in the go-ahead run with a triple in the seventh inning, and James Paxton struck out nine to go over 200 for the season to lead the Mariners.

Paxton came into the day with 199 strikeouts and wasted no time becoming the sixth pitcher in team history to reach 200, striking out leadoff batter Jurickson Profar.

It was one of nine strikeouts in the game for Paxton, who allowed one run and seven hits over six innings and didn't give up a walk.

Seattle's ace become the first Mariners pitcher to reach the 200 strikeout mark since Felix Hernandez in 2014.

Nick Vincent (4-4) pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the win, and Edwin Diaz earned his league-leading 57th save, tying Bobby Thigpen's 1990 mark for second-most all time.

Texas starter Adrian Sampson (0-3) held Seattle scoreless through four innings. He ended up allowing three runs and seven hits, with four strikeouts and no walks.

              ATHLETICS 5, ANGELS 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Khris Davis hit his major league-leading 48th homer and the Athletics locked up their winningest season in 16 years.

Jed Lowrie homered and drove in two runs for the playoff-bound A's (97-64), who hadn't won 97 games since going 103-59 in 2002.

A majors-best 42-22 since the All-Star break, the A's are already locked into a trip to New York on Wednesday for the AL wild card playoff game against the Yankees.

Kaleb Cowart had an RBI single for the Angels, whose four-game winning streak ended with a landmark loss. The Angels (79-82) are guaranteed to finish with three consecutive losing records for the first time under manager Mike Scioscia, who hasn't announced whether his 19-year tenure is over.

Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani and Justin Upton each went 0 for 4 for the Angels, who have made the playoffs just once since 2009 despite their annually bulky payroll. The Halos hadn't had three straight losing seasons since 1992-94.

Liam Hendriks pitched the first inning, allowing one single, before Trevor Cahill (7-4) threw four innings of one-hit ball for the A's.

Davis connected in the first off Tyler Skaggs (8-10), driving a two-run shot for his ninth homer in September and his fifth in seven games. The 30-year-old slugger matched Jimmie Foxx's 48 homers in 1933 for the fourth-most in a single season in A's history.

                Season record: 9-8-1

                **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

                13) Clemson 27, Syracuse 23— Clemson’s week with their QB’s:
                — Quarterback A is named the new starter.
                — Quarterback B, the former starter, decides to transfer.
                — Quarterback A gets hurt in the second quarter.
                — TV announcers wonder if Quarterback B has withdrawn from school yet.
                — Quarterback C (a redshirt freshman) comes in, rallies Clemson from a 23-13 deficit with a last-minute TD; he was 7-13 for 83 yards. Big day for him.

                12) Ohio State 27, Penn State 26— Nittany Lions led 13-0 after a 93-yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter, then led 26-14 with 8:00 left, but Ohio State had drives of 75-96 yards in last 6:30 to pull out a big road win.

It is great to have a senior QB because at the end of the game in critical spots, the senior QB makes big plays, but on 4th-and-5 in the last minute, Penn State handed off instead of letting their terrific QB McSorley make a play, and they got stopped.

                11) Northern Illinois 26, Eastern Michigan 23 OT— From 2012-15, Eastern Michigan was 7-41. Since start of ’16, they’re 14-16, but 0-6 in overtime games. Coach Chris Creighton has turned the program around, but it has to be frustrating- they lost last two weeks by FG in OT.

                10) Kentucky 24, South Carolina 10— Wildcats are 3-0 in SEC play for first time since 1977, when I was a college freshman with an excellent head of hair. These days? No more hair.

Not only is Kentucky 5-0, they’ve already beaten Florida, South Carolina and Miss State, three quality wins- their game at Texas A&M next week will be fun to watch.

                9) Fresno State 49, Toledo 27— Bulldogs are 13-5 in 1+ seasons under Jeff Tedford; they were 10-28 the three seasons before he got there.

Tedford was Aaron Rodgers’ college coach at Cal, later a head coach in the CFL. Why exactly did Cal fire him? He had winning seasons nine of his 11 years in Berkeley (82-57, 50-45 in Pac-12).

                8) Washington State 28, Utah 24— Gardner Minshew threw an 89-yard TD pass with 4:14 left as the Coogs improved to 4-1. Wazzu had zero rushing yards in this game. Zero- they threw the ball for 445 yards.

Minshew is a grad transfer from East Carolina; only reason he is in Pullman is because the kid who was supposed to be Wazzu’s QB this season took his own life last January- that tragedy opened the door for Minshew to transfer in and he is having a big season.

                7) Upsets of the Week:
                — Tulane (+13.5) 40, Memphis 24
                — Army (+8) 42, Buffalo 13
                — Georgia State (+7.5) 46, UL-Monroe 14
                — Louisiana Tech 29 (+7.5), North Texas 27
                — Nevada (+6.5) 28, Air Force 25
                — Liberty (+6.5) 52, New Mexico 43

                6) Arizona State 52, Oregon State 24— Sophomore RB Eno Benjamin ran the ball 30 times for 312 yards, which is a new ASU record. In this pass-happy era, Herm Edwards’ Sun Devils ran the football 48 times for 396 yards.

                5) Colorado 38, UCLA 16 (Friday)— If you had the Buffaloes to be the last unbeaten team in the Pac-12, a) pat yourself on the back, b) unless you’re lying, which you probably are.

Colorado QB Montez is very good, a mobile field general; their WR Shenault will be in the NFL fairly soon.

                4) Army 42, Buffalo 13— This could be the Cadets’ best team in 20+ years (they went 10-2 in ’96 under current Chiefs’ DC Bob Sutton). Whipping a pretty good Buffalo team suggests that last week’s OT loss at Oklahoma wasn’t a big a shock as we thought it was. In their last two games, Army has converted 22-35 third down plays.

                3) Michigan 20, Northwestern 17— Wildcats led 17-0 five minutes into the 2nd quarter, then didn’t score again and suffered a bitter loss. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald is a pretty cool guy, but he fired his headset down when this game ended.

This was the 3rd-biggest comeback win in Michigan football history.

                2) Western Michigan 40, Miami OH 39— Broncos’ QB Wassink was 27-42/439 yards passing with five TD’s, no INT’s. Wassink ran two yards for the winning score with 2:53 left in a game they trailed 33-21 in third quarter.

                1) Middle Tennessee State 25, Florida Atlantic 24— Down 24-17 in last minute, Blue Raiders scored TD with 0:38 left, went for two points and the win; coach’s son Brent Stockstill threw for the two points, as MTSU wins a game they once trailed 21-3.

                          • LEADING OFF: Brewers-Cubs, Rockies-Dodgers in Games 163
                            September 30, 2018
                            By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:

                            WIN OR GO WILD

In a big league first, a pair of tiebreaking Game 163s will be played on the same day to sort out the NL playoff picture. First, the Cubs host the Brewers to settle the NL Central at Wrigley Field. Then the Dodgers host the Rockies to determine an NL West champ. The losers of those games will play Tuesday in the NL wild-card game.

Chicago will call on left-hander Jose Quintana (13-11, 4.09), who is 6-2 with a 1.60 ERA in 10 starts against Milwaukee. The Brewers are countering with Jhoulys Chacin (15-8, 3.56). The Midwest rivals might not be done with each other after Monday, either - the winner of the wild-card game will face the NL Central champ in the NL Division Series. How about a rematch?

Colorado is attempting to end Los Angeles' five-year reign atop the division and win its first NL West crown. Walker Buehler (7-5, 2.76 ERA) gets the start for the Dodgers, and the Rockies will counter with German Marquez (14-10, 3.76 ERA), who struck out eight straight to begin his last start.

                            TRIPLE THREAT?

Brewers dynamo Christian Yelich gets a final chance to claim the NL's first Triple Crown since 1937. Yelich was 0 for 2 Sunday to end a 10-game hitting streak, though his .323 average is certain to remain tops in the NL. He enters Game 163 with 36 homers, one back of Colorado's Nolan Arenado for the home run lead, and his 109 RBIs are two shy of Chicago's Javier Baez for that title. There has not been a Triple Crown winner in the NL since Joe Medwick for the St. Louis Cardinals. Detroit's Miguel Cabrera in 2012 won the AL's first Triple Crown since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.

                            JOB OPEN

Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman will interview to lead Cincinnati full-time in 2019, though the club may wait until the end of October to fill the position. Riggleman took over after Bryan Price was fired following a 3-15 start, and the Reds went 64-80 under him. Among the other potential candidates, Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin has told the team he isn't interested at this time.

                            DECISION TIME

A few longtime stars said seeming farewells Sunday amid uncertainty about their futures, and this week might bring some clarity on whether they'll keep playing. Joe Mauer suited up at catcher for one more pitch with Minnesota in between standing ovations, and Adrian Beltre got a nice cheer from fans in his former home of Seattle when he was pulled midgame. Jose Reyes got a similar treatment with the Mets, while Hunter Pence may also decide to hang it up after a touching goodbye in San Francisco. None of those players confirmed they're calling it quits just yet, though.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Bengals 37, Falcons 36— Atlanta is first team since ’66 Giants to score 35+ points two weeks in a row, and lose both games (Giants lost 72-41 @ Washington, 49-40 @ Cleveland in consecutive games, going 1-12-1 after a 6-0 preseason). Falcons’ defense is really bad.

Cincy scored on a 13-yard pass to AJ Green with 0:07 left for the win, ending a 16-play, 75-yard drive. Bengals lost TE Eifert in 3rd quarter, with what looked like a broken ankle.

Texans 37, Colts 34— Coaching Malpractice 101- With 0:27 left in OT, Houston had 4th and 4 on its own 43-yard line. You punt the ball and take the tie, right? It is still early in the season.

Colts went for it, threw an incomplete pass, and three plays later, Houston kicked field goal to win the game. This is Grade A stupidity; in a 16-game season, you can’t give a game away!!!! There is a proper time to be conservative- this was it.

Bright spot for Indy was Andrew Luck, who led a 9-play, 85-yard drive that tied game 31-all with 0:45 left in regulation. Luck passed for 464 yards; Colts shouldn’t have lost this game.

Titans 26, Eagles 23 OT— Tennessee scored on a 10-yard pass with 0:05 left in OT to pull out a game they trailed 17-3 early in third quarter. Titans are 3-1, with three consecutive wins, all by three points.

Eagles in red zone; four drives, one TD, three FG’s
Titans in red zone: four drives, three TD’s, one FG

Why did the NFL shorten overtimes to 10:00? OT football is fun, ties not so much.

Cowboys 26, Lions 24— Dallas drove 55 yards in nine plays and kicked winning FG at gun; they are 2-0 at home, 0-2 on road. Dallas led 20-10 after third quarter, but Lions scored two TD’s in 4th quarter. Rookie kicker Maher kicked four FG’s for the Cowboys.

Dallas had five plays of 20+ yards, more than they had (4) in first three games combined.

Patriots 38, Dolphins 7— Miami coach Adam Gase has some serious coaching to do this week, after his 3-0 team came north and got their butts kicked very soundly. Dolphins have now lost ten games in a row in Foxboro. Patriots are 25-11 vs spread coming off a loss.

Tom Brady tied an NFL record by throwing a TD pass to his 70th different receiver (Cordarrelle Patterson). Check the quiz on this site if you know who the other guy is.

Packers 22, Bills 0— Total yardage was 423-145, which sums it up; sometimes when play a rookie QB on the road, bad things happen. Hey, Jared Goff was 0-7 as a starter two years ago, and he’s doing pretty well now. Since 2008. Bills are 22-39-2 vs spread coming off a win.

One thing about Green Bay; Aaron Rodgers obviously has an injured knee, but in last 5:00 of this game, Rodgers was in game, throwing ball and scrambling. Why? Nothing good can come from that— thats where the coach has to step in and either run the ball on every play or sub Rodgers out for the backup.

Jaguars 31, Jets 12— Total yardage was 503-178; Jaguars averaged 9.4 yards per pass play. I mean, Jacksonville was -3 in turnovers, still won by three TD’s. That doesn’t happen much.

Pains me to type this, but New England outscored the rest of the AFC East (Miami, Jets, Bills) Sunday, 38-19.

Bears 48, Buccaneers 10— Ryan Fitzpatrick era came to a crushing end; Bucs were down 38-3 at the half and Jameis Winston played the whole second half. Chicago averaged 12.7 yards per pass attempt; when was last time they did THAT? Bears are already +6 in turnover margin.

Mitchell Trubisky is first Bears’ QB to throw 5+ TD’s in a game since Johnny Lujack threw six on December 11, 1949, against the Chicago Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

Seahawks 20, Cardinals 17— In a game in a dome where both teams missed two FG’s, Seattle K Janikowski nailed a 52-yarder at the gun to even Seattle’s record at 2-2, while Arizona drops to 0-4, losing Josh Rosen’s first NFL start. Not often a road team wins while going 0-10 on 3rd down conversions; Seattle ran ball for 171 yards, had 9-yard advantage in field position. Total yardage was 331-263, Seahawks.

Home side is now 0-7-1 in last eight series games; Seattle is 5-0-1 in last six visits here; Arizona is 12-6-1 in last 19 games as home underdogs.

Raiders 45, Browns 42 OT— Gruden gets his first win in decade in game his team trailed 28-14 in 3rd quarter; Oakland tied game with 0:30 left in regulation, won it on 29-yard FG in OT.

Browns aren’t a joke anymore; Mayfield threw for 295 yards in his first NFL start, but Cleveland turned ball over four times (-2)- they’ve had a very interesting month, with two brutal losses and a tie, wrapped around a win over the Jets.

Saints 33, Giants 18— New Orleans was in red zone four times in 2nd quarter, kicked four FG’s, leaving door open for Giants, but Saints scored TDs on both 2nd half drives and had 389-299 edge in yardage for game, holding Beckham to 7 catches for 60 yards.

Saints wore throwback uniforms, the kind Charlton Heston wore in the 1969 movie Number One, when he played an aging Saints’ QB. I’ve tried to find the movie to watch it, but have seen on the Interweb that Heston didn’t like the movie and tried his best to squelch its distribution- he broke a rib filming the football scenes.

Chargers 29, 49ers 27— Think about this, the 49ers were -1 in turnovers, lost field position by 19 yards (an awful lot), scored only 13 points on four red zone drives, and only lost by two points!!!

49ers scored a defensive TD; yardage was 368-364, so they hung in with backup QB Beathard as a 10-point underdog, averaging 7.6 yards/pass attempt- thats bad news for the Chargers. LA is now 2-8 vs spread last ten times they laid double digits. Over is 4-0 in Charger games this year.

Ravens 26, Ravens 14— Baltimore led 14-0 early, fumbled on goal line when it looked like it would be 21-0, then Steelers tied game in 2nd quarter, before Ravens outscored them 12-0 in 2nd half, with Tucker booting four FG’s, second week in row Steelers didn’t score in 2nd half.

Ravens are 8-2-1 vs spread in last 11 divisional road games; they outgained Steelers 451-284, had 16-yard edge in field position, were 8-17 on third down (Steelers were 2-12). When was last time Steelers had a game where they ran ball 11 times for 19 yards?
