    STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

    Streaking:
Jameson Taillon, Pittsburgh Pirates (13-9, 3.24 ERA, $617)

The Pittsburgh Pirates have won Jameson Taillon's last six starts and he is emerging as the No. 1 option in the team's starting rotation. Over those six outings he owns an ERA of 1.66 and a WHIP of 1.00.

Taillon and the Pirates are big +144 underdogs tonight at Wrigley Field against Cole Hamels and the Chicago Cubs.

    Slumping:
Marco Estrada, Toronto Blue Jays (7-13, 5.57 ERA, $76)

Marco Estrada's last start was a very effective one run and only four hits allowed in six innings of work, but that came agaisnt the historically bad Baltimore Orioles so that gets tossed out the window. In his seven starts leading up to that outing at Camden Yards, Estrada owns an ERA of 9.19 and a WHIP of 1.9175. He lives and dies by his change-up - and he's been mostly dying by that pitch in 2018.

Marco and the Jays are +165 home underdogs tonight against Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros.

    Breezy Fenway

In a day that seems primed to produce plenty of Under results, the wind will be blowing in from right-center field tonight at Fenway Park in Boston where the Red Sox will host the Orioles.

Dylan Bundy will get the starts for the O's and he's been better of late with only two earned runs allowed in each of his last two starts. In his last 10 starts against the Red Sox the Under is 6-2-2.

Nathan Eovaldi gets the assignment for the home side and he's allowed zero earned runs over his last two starts and comes into tonight with an ERA of 2.20 at home in 2018.

The full game total for tonight is set at 8.5 and this feels like another Under.

    Kluber Dominates The Sox

Indians' righty Corey Kluber gets the start tonight in Chicago against the host White Sox. Kluber has dominated the Sox over the last few season. In fact, over his last 10 starts against Chicago he owns a win/loss record of 8-0 with an ERA of 2.00 and a WHIP of 0.9754.

Look for that dominance to continue tonight. The moneyline is much too chalky at -260 and the Indinas' runline may be a bit too beefy for some at -155. The alternate runline of -2.5 could be in-play at -105 and look at Under on the White Sox team total of 2.5 at +130 and Under on White Sox team hits of 6.5 at +110.

    • Yanks lose Hicks to injury; BoSox clinch home field
      September 24, 2018
      By The Associated Press

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) Aaron Hicks injured his left hamstring running up the first-base line in the Yankees' 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night, another concern for New York heading into next week's AL wild-card game.

Hicks' 11th-inning double on Saturday drove Didi Gregorius with the run that clinched a postseason berth, and on Sunday the Yankees learned Sunday that Gregorius had torn cartilage in his right wrist during his headfirst slide across the plate.

Hicks, who had fouled a pitch off his left ankle just before the double, left Monday's game with left hamstring tightness.

New York's win eliminated the Rays and ensured a postseason berth for Oakland, which is likely to be the wild-card opponent but also is still alive in the AL West race. At 96-60, New York is assured of its best record since going 97-65 in 2011.

Gardner had a go-ahead single off Ryan Yarbrough (15-6) in a two-run fifth inning.

New York used eight pitchers and gave its starters extra rest ahead of the postseason, and the Rays managed just two hits - both off Sonny Gray (11-9).

      RED SOX 6, ORIOLES 2

BOSTON (AP) - Boston broke a 106-year-old franchise record with its 106th victory, clinching home-field advantage through the postseason thanks to a pair of hits from major league batting leader Mookie Betts.

Nathan Eovaldi struck out 10 hapless Baltimore batters to assure the Red Sox of the best record in baseball this season and home-field advantage through the World Series, if they make it that far. For now, they know they will open the Division Series at Fenway Park on Oct. 5 against the winner of the AL wild-card game between the New York Yankees and mostly likely Oakland.

The 1912 Red Sox won 105 games in their first season at Fenway Park.

The Orioles (45-111) became the sixth AL team and the first since the 2003 Tigers to lose 111 games, falling 60+ games behind Boston (106-51) in the division. It's the first time since 1939 that teams separated by 60 wins in the standings have played each other.

Six days after throwing six scoreless innings against the Yankees, Eovaldi (6-7) allowed one run on four hits in five innings, walking none but uncorking a pair of wild pitches.

Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy (8-16) gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in three innings, striking out five.

      PIRATES 5, CUBS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jameson Taillon outpitched Cole Hamels, Francisco Cervelli hit a two-run homer and Pittsburgh made Chicago wait at least another day to clinch a playoff spot.

The Cubs needed a win plus a loss by Colorado to Philadelphia to assure a franchise-record fourth straight trip to the playoffs, a run that includes a drought-busting World Series championship in 2016.

Taillon (14-9) gave up one run and five hits in seven innings, improving to 5-0 in his past seven starts.

Hamels (4-2) hit his second career homer but he lost his second straight start after going 4-0 in his first nine following a trade from Texas.

      ASTROS 5, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Brian McCann and Josh Reddick hit back-to-back home runs, and Houston beat Toronto to move one step closer to its second straight AL West title.

The defending World Series champions began the day with a magic number of three over Oakland to clinch the division - which would set up a best-of-five postseason matchup against AL Central champion Cleveland. The Athletics, who played later in Seattle, clinched at least a wild-card playoff spot when Tampa Bay lost to the New York Yankees.

Dallas Keuchel (12-11) allowed three runs in five innings for his first win since Sept. 3.

Five relievers followed before former Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna came on to a chorus of boos in the ninth, his first appearance in Toronto since being arrested for assault in May. Osuna, who earned his 19th save in 20 opportunities, was traded to the Astros on July 30. Many in the crowd of 23,463 jeered each of Osuna's pitches.

In the first big league meeting between brothers Yuli Gurriel and Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Houston's Yuli opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first. Younger brother Lourdes grounded into a double play in the bottom of the inning, then exited the game because of a sore left hamstring.

Marco Estrada (7-14) lost his fifth straight decision.

      INDIANS 4, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Corey Kluber struck out 11 in seven scoreless innings and won his 20th game, and Brandon Guyer hit a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh as Cleveland beat Chicago.

Kluber (20-7) reached 20 victories for the first time after recording 19 wins last season and 18 victories the two previous seasons and in 2004. The reigning AL CY Young winner is the first 20-game winner for the Central Division champions since Cliff Lee went 22-3 in 2008.

Cleveland is also the first team to have four pitchers with 200 strikeouts in a season. Kluber ran his total to 216, while Carlos Carrasco has 217, Trevor Bauer 215 and Mike Clevinger 202.

The Indians tied the Chicago Cubs for the major league lead with 17 shutouts.

Adam Rosales gave the Indians an insurance run with a home run off reliever Nate Jones to left for his first of the season in the ninth inning. Brandon Barnes and Edwin Encarnacion then added RBI singles. It was Rosales' first home run since Sept. 4, 2017, when he was with Arizona.

Indians relievers Andrew Miller and Cody Allen pitched a perfect eighth and ninth, respectively, and combined with Kluber to retire the final 17 batters.

Dylan Covey didn't allow a run over six innings. Reliever Ian Hamilton (0-2) gave up Guyer's homer on his third pitch.

      NATIONALS 7, MARLINS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anthony Rendon homered and drove four runs, Bryce Harper reached 100 RBIs in a season for the first time and Washington beat Miami.

Juan Soto and Matt Wieters also homered for Washington, which broke it open with four runs on three pitches in the fourth inning.

Harper started the big inning, driving in his 100th run with a sacrifice fly that scored Adam Eaton and put Washington ahead 3-1. Harper, a pending free agent who may be playing his final home series at Nationals Park, got a standing ovation from the sparse, rain-soaked crowd. His previous high was 99 RBIs in 2015, when he won the NL MVP Award.

Rendon and Soto then homered back-to-back on the next two pitches from Sandy Alcantara (2-2).

Justin Miller (7-1) allowed one unearned run in the fifth in relief of Stephen Strasburg, who was pulled after throwing 100 pitches over four innings.

      ROCKIES 10, PHILLIES 1

DENVER (AP) - Jon Gray pitched seven crisp innings and drew a bases-loaded walk as part of a five-run third to lead Colorado.

Colorado won its fourth straight game since being swept in Los Angeles by the NL West-leading Dodgers, who entered the night with a 1+-game advantage over the Rockies in the division. Colorado also began the day trailing St. Louis by 1 1/2 games for the second wild card.

Gray (12-8) got the start when Tyler Anderson was scratched due to shoulder tightness. The right-hander's one costly mistake was an elevated fastball that Rhys Hoskins hit for a homer in the seventh when the game was out of reach.

David Dahl lined a two-run homer in the fourth, Tony Wolters drew four walks and Charlie Blackmon had a single to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 16 games for Colorado. Nolan Arenado and Gerardo Parra delivered run-scoring singles off Zach Eflin (11-8).

All-Star shortstop Trevor Story returned to the starting lineup after missing a week with inflammation in his right elbow and made an immediate impact. He had two hard-hit doubles to center.

Phillies left fielder Aaron Altherr ran into the fence while trying to catch Dahl's homer. The side of Altherr's face slammed into the padded fence, his hat flying off. Altherr eventually limped to a cart and was taken away. He sprained his right big toe and bruised a knee.

        Quote of the Day
“We got a long way to go to get to Golden State. They can pick up right where they left off, starting with training camp. … We are picking up from scratch, so we got a long way to go. We can’t worry about what Golden State is doing. … They’ve been together for a few years now.”

        Tuesday’s quiz
Who did the Buccaneers beat when they won their only Super Bowl title?

        Monday’s quiz
Other than Josh Rosen, Troy Aikman was the only other UCLA quarterback taken in the top 10 picks of an NFL Draft.

        Sunday’s quiz
NBA’s Washington Wizards were known as the “Bullets” before switching their nickname to the Wizards.

        ***************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

        13) Someone in Las Vegas Saturday bet $5,000 on the Cleveland Browns to win the AFC at 50-1; they win one game in 635 days and a guy is dropping five grand on them to get to the Super Bowl.

Someone else risked $9,000 to win $450 ($450!!!!) on the Vikings Sunday; all they had to do was beat the 17-point dog underdog Buffalo Bills.

        Gambling and winning is difficult.

        12) Then again, a gambler at Buffalo Bill’s casino in Primm, NV hit a $25, 8-team parlay Saturday, using eight “under” bets on college football totals. Winning wager was worth $4,500.

        11) There are bitter losses, then there is Oregon’s home loss to Stanford Saturday night.

        — Ducks led 24-7 at halftime.
        — Oregon had ball in Stanford territory up 24-7 in 3rd quarter; Stanford’s defense picks up an Oregon fumble and runs 80 yards for a TD.
        — Ducks had ball in Stanford territory in last minute, appeared to have first down that would have ended game, but runner fumbled, Cardinal recovered and they tied game with a FG.
        — Stanford wins the game in OT.

        10) Minnesota Twins have allowed 10 walk-off homers this year, an all-time record; they’ve had 15 walk-off losses, which is one short of the all-time record, held by five teams:

        1924 Phillies
        1943 St Louis Browns
        1966 Red Sox
        1969 Giants
        1975 Houston Astros

        9) Lookalikes, when they both have a hat on: Tennessee football coach Jeremy Pruitt and Indians’ manager Terry Francona.

        8) Eli Manning makes roughly $200,000 a year (give-or-take $20K) to do a for short spot each week with Mike Francesa on WFAN in New York City during the football season. Thats a lot of cash to pay a guy for spewing cliches while failing to appear interested.

        7) Sounds like the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves are off to a great start this season; the star player wants to be traded, the coach and the GM don’t want to trade him, but the owner does, so he orders the reluctant GM to engage in trade talks. Could be a long winter for the Wolves.

Minnesota also signed its other star, All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns to a 5-year, $190M super-maximum contract extension. Apparently the two stars didn’t get along well.

        6) Things you don’t see in lot of places: After the A’s game Saturday night, 40 or so fans lined up on the third base line, the players/coaches took their jerseys off, signed them and gave them to the corresponding fan who won the contest to win that person’s jersey. Pretty cool promotion.

        5) ESPN play-by-play guy Joe Tessitore is a little bit of a hype master; Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is off to a great start in his career, but you’re not “a superstar” after four games.

        4) If you’re counting New England out as a Super Bowl contender this year, remember that the Patriots were 1-3 in ’01 and won the Super Bowl; they were 2-2 in ’03 and won the Super Bowl, and were 2-2 in ’14 and won the Super Bowl.

That said, Miami is 3-0 and everyone else in the AFC East is 1-2. Dolphins are visiting Foxboro Sunday, and that suddenly becomes a much more important game.

        3) With Jimmy Garoppolo done for this year, 49ers’ coach Kyle Shanahan said he’s working out several FA QBs tomorrow; Tom Savage. Kellen Clemens. TJ Yates. Nick Mullens will be promoted from the practice squad. Matt Moore may also try out.

CJ Beathard is now the 49ers’ starting QB.

        2) Steelers 30, Buccaneers 27— Pittsburgh hung a 30-spot on the Bucs in the first half; Tampa Bay turned ball over four times before halftime. Hard to win that way.

Bucs stormed back in second half, but fell short; Ryan Fitzpatrick is first player in NFL history to throw for 400+ yards in three consecutive games.

        1) Meanwhile, in St Pete, the Rays lost 4-1, which means the Oakland A’s are in the playoffs, and I really, really enjoyed typing this sentence. Later this week, I’ll have a lot more on this gritty, gutty team that has pulled off a baseball miracle this season.

Tickets for postseason games in Oakland go on sale Friday morning at 9am, PST

        • Athletics clinch playoff berth with Rays' loss to Yankees
          September 24, 2018
          By The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) The Oakland Athletics clinched their first playoff berth in four years Monday night, earning at least an American League wild card when the Tampa Bay Rays lost to the New York Yankees.

Following three straight last-place finishes in the AL West, the A's found out just a couple of minutes after the first pitch of their game against Seattle that they are in the postseason for the first time since 2014.

Tampa Bay's 4-1 loss to the Yankees eliminated the Rays from playoff contention. Oakland still has an outside shot at overtaking Houston for the division title, but is more likely headed toward a wild-card matchup with the Yankees.

The A's could still host that game. They were two games behind the Yankees for the top wild card, pending the outcome of Oakland's game against the Mariners.

Few people imagined the A's could make the playoffs this season, a young team with few proven stars after finishing 75-87 a year ago. Oakland won only 68 games in 2015 and 69 in 2016.

The A's have the third-lowest payroll among the 30 major league clubs at $78 million for their 40-man roster, ahead of only the White Sox and Rays.

Oakland was 34-36 and 11 games behind Seattle in the wild-card race on June 15. The A's have gone 60-26 since then, pending the outcome of Monday's game.

''We've had some younger players mature and become, for me, stars,'' manager Bob Melvin said Monday. ''I think the two guys on the corners (third baseman Matt Chapman and first baseman Matt Olson) should win Gold Gloves.

''Our defense is night-and-day to what it was and it's gotten better as the year's gone along. We've gone from last year being one of the worst defenses in the league to now one of the best. Our bullpen has been a strength for us all year. We don't just rely on one facet. We seem to be able to win in different ways.''

Oakland designated hitter Khris Davis leads the majors with a career-high 45 home runs and has 119 RBI. Davis has hit at least 40 homers and driven in more than 100 runs in each of this three seasons with the Athletics.

Blake Treinen (9-2) is one of the top closers in baseball with 37 saves and a 0.81 ERA, the lowest of all major league relievers with at least 75 innings pitched. Opponents have a .091 batting average against Treinen with runners in scoring position.

''It's amazing,'' Melvin said. ''Not only is he doing it closing games, he's doing it in games when we're tied and he's pitching two innings at times. The numbers are absolutely fantastic. I don't know that I've seen numbers like that from any closer in quite some time. He's meant a lot to this team.''

The A's are the only team in the majors with an undefeated record this season when leading after seven innings (67-0). They entered Monday with the best record in baseball in one-run games at 31-13.

Oakland made key moves to bolster the pitching staff via trades over the summer by adding veteran relievers Jeurys Familia and Fernando Rodney and starter Mike Fiers, who is 5-1 with a 2.90 ERA since joining the Athletics.

The A's overcame losing key starters from their rotation down the stretch. That included left-hander Sean Manaea, who pitched a no-hitter on April 21 against Boston and is now done for the year recovering from arthroscopic shoulder surgery that took place this past week.

The Athletics are making their fourth playoff appearance in the last seven seasons (all under Melvin) and their 27th postseason appearance all-time. The A's lost at Kansas City 9-8 in 12 innings in the 2014 wild-card game, the last time Oakland reached the postseason.

The last time the A's reached the World Series was 1990, losing in four games to the Cincinnati Reds. Oakland won the 1989 World Series (which took place during the Bay Area earthquake) in four straight games over the San Francisco Giants.

                    • LEADING OFF: Astros, Cubs can clinch; Wright makes comeback
                      September 25, 2018
                      By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                      ON THE CUSP

Houston can clinch its second consecutive AL West title - and a best-of-five playoff matchup against Cleveland - with a win at Toronto and an Oakland loss in Seattle. Rookie right-hander Josh James (1-0, 2.81 ERA) makes his third career start for the defending World Series champions, already assured a postseason spot. Alex Bregman and the Astros, with the top road record in baseball at 53-22, are 99-57 overall and a major league-best 17-4 in September. ''Everybody is really excited about us closing in on 100 wins and closing in on a division title,'' Bregman said, ''but there's only one thing on our mind and that's winning the World Series again.'' The second-place A's locked up at least a wild card Monday night.

                      PARTY CITY

Looking to wrap up a franchise-record fourth straight trip to the playoffs, the Cubs can punch their ticket with a win over Pittsburgh at Wrigley Field and a loss by either Colorado or St. Louis. Mike Montgomery (5-5, 3.75 ERA) pitches for Chicago, which leads the NL Central by 1+ games over Milwaukee. Montgomery has won all three career starts versus the Pirates and has a 2.30 ERA in nine outings against them.

                      THE WRIGHT STUFF

The Mets plan to reinstate captain David Wright from the 60-day disabled list when they host NL East champion Atlanta at Citi Field. Wright has been sidelined since May 2016 by back, neck and shoulder injuries that required surgery. Maybe he'll even get in the game - manager Mickey Callaway has said he'd like to give Wright a couple of pinch-hit opportunities ahead of his farewell game Saturday, when the seven-time All-Star is scheduled to start at third base against Miami in what he expects to be his final big league appearance.

                      CENTRAL CASTING

Milwaukee sends Gio Gonzalez (9-11, 4.28 ERA) to the mound and St. Louis counters with rookie Austin Gomber (6-1, 3.63) in the second game of their big series at Busch Stadium. The Brewers won the opener to take a three-game lead in the wild-card race over the Cardinals, who are a half-game ahead of Colorado for the second spot. Gonzalez is 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA in three starts since he was acquired in a trade with Washington on Aug. 31. Gomber is coming off a solid start at Atlanta, allowing one run in five innings for an 8-1 victory.

                      NOW HIRING

San Francisco is searching for a new general manager after Bobby Evans was fired Monday. The team said Evans will be reassigned, with responsibilities to be determined. The Giants (72-85) are finishing up their second consecutive losing season. ''At this point, we needed to take a fresh approach to baseball operations,'' CEO Larry Baer said. ''We're looking for someone that sort of is the `next gen' general manager, if you will.''

                        • Rox take over 2nd wild card spot
                          September 26, 2018
                          By The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) David Dahl homered for a second straight night, a three-run shot in the third, and the Colorado Rockies vaulted into the final NL wild-card spot by beating the Philadelphia Phillies 10-3 on Tuesday night.

The Rockies' fifth straight win moved them a half-game in front of St. Louis for the second wild-card after the Cardinals lost 12-4 to Milwaukee. Colorado trailed the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers by 1+ games entering the night and still has a chance to win its first division title. The Rockies have five games remaining.

The game-changing hit was delivered by Dahl, who lined a fastball from Vince Velasquez (9-12) to left for his 12th homer - nearly to the same spot where Dahl hit a two-run homer the previous night. Dahl also added a run-scoring single as part of a 3-for-5, 4-RBI evening.

The Rockies used seven relievers, with DJ Johnson (1-0) getting one out in the third to earn his first big league win.

                          BREWERS 12, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Christian Yelich homered and drove in six runs, and surging Milwaukee hurt St. Louis' playoff chances.

Ryan Braun went deep twice and Jesus Aguilar also connected as Milwaukee won for the fifth time in six games and moved within one-half game of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs. Manny Pina had two hits and drove in a run, and pitcher Gio Gonzalez contributed an RBI single for just his fourth hit of the season.

The Cardinals (87-71) fell one-half game behind the Colorado Rockies (87-70), who beat Philadelphia 10-3, for the second NL wild card. Milwaukee (91-67) leads Colorado by 3+ games for the top wild card.

Milwaukee scored each of its first six runs with two outs. Aguilar and Braun hit back-to-back homers in the first off rookie Austin Gomber (6-2), and Gonzalez chased the left-hander with his hit in the fourth.

Gonzalez lasted four innings. Taylor Williams (1-3), the third of seven Milwaukee pitchers, got three outs for the win.

                          PIRATES 6, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Slugger Kris Bryant exited with a bruised left wrist, Mike Montgomery got hit hard over four-plus innings and the Chicago Cubs stumbled again in their playoff run by losing to Pittsburgh.

The Cubs missed a chance to clinch a franchise-record fourth straight trip to the postseason for the second time in as many nights. And their lead in the NL Central over Milwaukee shrunk to a half game, with the Brewers beating St. Louis 12-4.

Chicago needed a win plus a loss by Colorado to Philadelphia to secure a playoff spot and extend a run that includes a drought-ending World Series championship in 2016. But the Cubs lost for the fourth time in sixth games while the Rockies won 10-3.

Bryant got struck by a pitch from Chris Archer (3-3) in the fourth inning and was replaced at third base in the sixth by Ian Happ, who had pinch hit in the fifth.

Montgomery (5-6) gave up five runs and seven hits, and the Cubs got shut out for the 11th time this season.

                          NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Scherzer became the 17th pitcher since 1900 to strike out 300 batters in a season, reaching that milestone by fanning 10 in seven innings during Washington's otherwise meaningless win over Miami.

Scherzer (18-7) lowered his ERA to 2.53 by allowing one run in seven innings as he bids for a third consecutive NL Cy Young Award; he also won the 2013 honor in the AL for Detroit.

The righty reached the 300-strikeout mark by getting Austin Dean to whiff on an 85-mph slider at the end of a 10-pitch at-bat for the second out of the seventh.

Washington's Anthony Rendon hit a three-run shot in the first inning off Jeff Brigham (0-4), increasing his season totals to 24 homers and 90 RBIs and extending his streak of reaching base to 33 straight games.

                          ASTROS 4, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Houston reached 100 wins for the second straight season and closed in on the AL West title, beating Toronto behind Alex Bregman's two-run homer.

Houston improved to 100-57 and would clinch the division with one more win or a loss by second-place Oakland (95-62), which played later at Seattle. Seeking their second straight AL West title, the Astros need three wins in their final five games to break the franchise record for victories in a season, set in 1998.

Roberto Osuna needed just six pitches in the ninth for his 20th save in 21 chances, completing a six-hitter. Earlier Tuesday, assault charges against Osuna were dropped because the complainant, who lives in Mexico, made clear she would not travel to Toronto to testify.

Josh James (2-0) allowed one run and four hits in five innings in his third big league start.

Gaviglio (3-9) allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in five-plus innings, his fifth straight winless outing.

                          YANKEES 9, RAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Struggling Gary Sanchez drove in four runs for the first time since early April, Luis Severino won his 19th game and New York beat Tampa Bay to keep up its push for home-field advantage in the AL wild-card game.

Sanchez had been 10 for 66 (.152) since returning Sept. 1 from a groin strain and 1 for his last 28, dropping his average to .180. He hit a three-run homer off Jalen Beeks in a seven-run third inning, his first long ball since Sept. 10, and added an RBI single in the fifth.

Severino (19-8) is competing for Masahiro Tanaka and J.A. Happ to start in the Oct. 3 wild-card game, most likely against Oakland.

Adeiny Hechavarria homered against Jake Faria (4-4) leading off the third. Luke Voit had an RBI double, Beeks walked Neil Walker with the bases loaded, Miguel Andujar hit a sacrifice fly and Sanchez followed with his 17th homer.

                          INDIANS 5, WHITE SOX 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Trevor Bauer took a step toward returning to Cleveland's rotation for the postseason by tossing four effective innings, but Chicago overcame a two-run, ninth-inning deficit and beat Cleveland.

Carlos Carrasco (16-10) followed Bauer with his second relief appearance this season. Carrasco tossed one-hit, shutout ball through four innings and entered the ninth with a 4-2 lead before the White Sox scored three times and snapped a three-game losing streak.

The White Sox need to win one of their last five games to avoid their first 100-loss season since 1970, when they went 56-106.

White Sox starter James Shields allowed four runs on six hits and four walks in six innings. Reliever Ian Hamilton (1-2) got one out in the ninth to earn the win.

                          BRAVES 7, METS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning, Ozzie Albies homered in the eighth and NL East champion Atlanta rallied past New York for its sixth straight victory.

Atlanta shortstop Dansby Swanson exited early with a sore left hand, and the Braves were held scoreless by Noah Syndergaard for six innings. But they jumped all over the Mets' bullpen for seven runs in the next two innings to match their longest winning streak of the season.

Mets captain David Wright was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list before the game but did not play even though he was available off the bench.

Kurt Suzuki drove in two runs for the Braves, who trailed 3-0 before rallying against Robert Gsellman (6-3) in the seventh. Acuna's two-run single off Drew Smith gave Atlanta a 4-3 lead.

Dan Winkler (4-0) allowed a run in one inning for the win.

                          TIGERS 4, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Harold Castro's first career hit started an eighth-inning rally that led Detroit past Minnesota.

Joe Mauer set the Twins' record for reaching base. He singled in the first inning, reaching base for the 3,073 time in his career and surpassing Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew.

Victor Alcantara (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning in relief of starter Spencer Turnbull, who allowed one run in six innings in his second major league start. Shane Greene earned his 32nd save.

Twins reliever Trevor Hildenberger (4-6) surrendered four runs and retired one batter while giving up three hits and a walk.

                          ROYALS 4, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Hunter Dozier led off the ninth inning with a tie-breaking home run, lifting Kansas City over Cincinnati.

Dozier's 11th homer of the season, off Raisel Iglesias (2-5), left Kansas City needing two wins in its last five games to avoid tying the franchise record of 106 losses in a season, set in 2005.

Kevin McCarthy (5-4) worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth and earned the win. The Reds loaded the bases again in the ninth with two outs against Wily Peralta. But Joey Votto grounded out and Peralta earned his 14th save.

                          DIAMONDBACKS 4, DODGERS 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Eduardo Escobar homered off Kenta Maeda leading off the ninth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks tightened the NL West race.

Los Angeles (88-70) had won 10 of its previous 12 games to surge into the NL West lead, but Colorado (87-70) pulled within a half-game of the NL champions by beating Philadelphia 10-3.

Chris Taylor hit a tying double off Brad Boxberger (3-7) in the top of the ninth. Escobar sent a full-count fastball from Maeda (8-10) into the right-field seats, stopping Arizona's four-game losing streak.

David Peralta had a two-run double and pinch-hitter Ildemaro Vargas lined a run-scoring single in the seventh inning for Arizona (80-78), which needs two wins to ensure consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 2007-08.

Cody Bellinger hit a solo home run for the Dodgers.

                          ANGELS 4, RANGERS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Shohei Ohtani, Justin Upton and Kaleb Cowart drove in runs and the Los Angeles Angels rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to beat Texas.

Noe Ramirez (7-5) earned the victory in relief.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the third when Joey Gallo hit his 40th homer of the season to deep center. Gallo has three more homers than singles (37) this season.

Gallo became the fourth Rangers player to have back-to-back 40-homer seasons.

“Our reality is that he (Jimmy Butler) has requested a trade, so we’ll honor that. But we’re not just going to make any deal. … Our conversations will remain private. He requested a trade and we’re going to honor his request. But we’re not going to do anything that’s bad for the Timberwolves. We’re going to do what’s good for the Timberwolves. We have to prioritize that. That’s what our job is.”

Wednesday’s List of 13: NFL stats, and other stuff…….

                              13) Tampa Bay Bucs play in Chicago Sunday, then have their bye week; Ryan Fitzpatrick just became the first QB EVER to throw for 400+ yards three games in a row. Problem is, he isn’t the Bucs’ starting QB; he is the backup who started while Jameis Winston was suspended for off-field issues.

If Winston is on the Tampa Bay roster next March 13, the Bucs will owe him $20.9M; thats going to be a very interesting decision. Fitzpatrick will be 36 in late November, so he isn’t the QB of the future in the Big Sombrero. Question is: if not Winston, then who?

                              12) Arizona Cardinals are switching to rookie Josh Rosen as their starting QB for their home game with Seattle Sunday; Arizona put Rosen in the game with about 4:15 left Sunday and the Cardinals down 16-14— very difficult spot to be put in, for his NFL debut.

In their first three games, Arizona’s offense:
                              — Total yards: 213-137-221
                              — 3rd down conversions: 1-8, 3-12, 3-10
                              — Turnovers: 2-1-4 (minus-3 for season)
                              — Cardinals had zero red zone snaps in their last two games.
                              — Arizona has been scoreless in four of six halves this season.

In other words, Rosen’s starting won’t hurt any.

                              11) Happy 85th birthday to the great Hubie Brown, who won 528 games and two NBA Coach of the Year titles; he is still an excellent basketball analyst for ESPN.

Long time ago, October 15, 1984 to be exact, Knicks-Bulls played an exhibition game in Glens Falls, an hour from where I live- Michael Jordan was a rookie, but he wasn’t “Michael Jordan” yet, just the 3rd pick in the NBA Draft.

Friend of mine and I went to Glens Falls during the day and walked in the arena while the Knicks were having their walk-thru. No one stopped us, so we went down to the floor and sat down on the end of the Knicks’ bench and watched practice. When I stretched my legs, my feet were on the court- it was awesome.

                              10) After practice, I talked to Bernard King, the Knicks’ star and Hubie Brown; both guys were nice to me, Coach Brown talked to me for 10 minutes about what stats (analytics now) are good to use and what ones aren’t. That was a good day

                              10) Clemson named true freshman Trevor Lawrence starting QB for this week vs Syracuse; the previous starter, Kelly Bryant, is apparently not happy and may transfer— he had a meeting with Dabo Swinney on Monday. The meeting was said to be “emotional”; Bryant didn’t practice on Monday or Tuesday.

                              9) Garbagemen come thru my neighborhood at 5:40am on Tuesdays, when it is still very dark out- now that is a bad job, especially in winter, when it is cold as hell. In summers, the sun is actually out at 5:40, so it might not be so bad. What time do these guys have to get up? Yuk.

                              8) Angels’ DH/P Shohei Ohtani will undergo elbow surgery next week; not sure what that means for his availability as a hitter next spring, but he won’t pitch at all next season.

                              7) Seems like NFL bye weeks are more stretched out this season; Panthers-Redskins are off this week; Rams-Chiefs don’t have their bye until Thanksgiving weekend, after their Mexico City tilt.

                              6) NFL teams who scored most pts/possession in the red zone this season:
                              Ravens 6.92 ppp, Chiefs 6.67, Bengals 6.50, Seahawks 6.33

Seattle scored 38 points on only six red zone drives, T3rd least in NFL. Arizona has only been inside opponents’ red zone twice.

Teams with worst ppp in red zone:
                              Cardinals 3.00, Jets 3.33, Titans 3.83, Broncos 3.88

                              5) NFL teams who allowed fewest pts/possession in the red zone this season:
                              Titans 2.60, Dolphins 2.67, Eagles 3.25, Jaguars 3.67

Teams who’ve allowed most ppp in red zone:
                              Panthers 7.14, Bucs 6.56, Chiefs 6.44, Falcons 6.27

                              4) NFL teams who scored most ppp on drives starting 75+ yards from goal line:
                              Chiefs 2.94, Falcons 2.90, Ravens 2.87, Bengals 2.60

Teams who scored fewest ppp on drives starting 75+ yards from goal line:
                              Cardinals 0.65, Vikings 0.80, Jets/Texans 0.86

                              3) Teams with most plays of 20+ yards this season:
                              Bucs 21, Chargers 20, Chiefs 19, Broncos 18, Bengals 17

Teams with fewest plays of 20+ yards:
                              Cowboys 4, Titans 5, Cardinals/Bears/Patriots 6.

                              2) Teams who allowed fewest plays of 20+ yards:
                              Cowboys 4, Redskins 6, Jaguars 7, Ravens/Browns, Lions, Seahawks 9

Teams who allowed most plays of 20+ yards:
                              Chiefs/Steelers 20, Chargers/Raiders 17, Panthers 16

                              1) Buffalo has gone 3/out on 18 of its 35 drives this season.
Rams have gone 3/out on one of their 27 drives.

                              • LEADING OFF: deGrom seeks 1 last quality start; Sale for Sox
                                September 25, 2018
                                By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors on Wednesday:

                                ONE MORE TIME

Jacob deGrom will make the final start of what has been a remarkably consistent season that has him a favorite for the NL Cy Young Award. It also is the last chance for deGrom (9-9) to have a winning record and reach double digits in victories. The Mets right-hander's win total likely would have made him an underdog for the Cy Young in previous decades, but voters are increasingly looking beyond win-loss record to numbers that are more within a pitcher's control. And nobody has controlled opposing hitters like deGrom, who has a record 23 consecutive quality starts, 28 starts in a row allowing three runs or fewer and a 1.77 ERA. He is to face the NL East champion Braves and Sean Newcomb (12-9, 4.04 ERA), who will make his last start before the playoffs.

                                SHORT-TERM SALE

Red sox ace Chris Sale gets one more chance to work his way back into form after missing a month with a shoulder injury. The left-hander (12-4, 2.00 ERA) threw 73 pitches in 3 1/3 innings in his last start, the longest outing of his three since returning from the disabled list. He'll start the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles after Tuesday's rainout in Boston. The Red Sox have clinched the AL East and home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

                                AMERICAN DEBUT

Felix Hernandez will make the 403rd start of his big league career and his first as an American citizen. The 32-year-old from Venezuela became a naturalized citizen during a ceremony in Seattle on Monday. On the mound, it's been a disappointing season for the 2010 AL Cy Young Award winner, who had a long run as one of baseball's best pitchers. He was briefly demoted to the bullpen last month, and his 5.46 ERA is nearly a full run higher than his career-worst. He faces the playoff-bound Oakland Athletics and resurgent veteran Edwin Jackson (6-3, 3.18 ERA).
