      • Big innings lift Red Sox past White Sox
        August 31, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a sacrifice fly in Boston's four-run seventh inning and a tiebreaking single in the ninth, helping the Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 9-4 on Thursday night.

Ian Kinsler sparked the winning rally with a one-out single off Thyago Vieira (1-1) for the last of his three hits. Blake Swihart then walked before Bradley drove in Kinsler with a liner into right field.

Major league-leading Boston poured it on from there. Andrew Benintendi added another RBI single and J.D. Martinez hit a three-run drive for his 39th homer, making it 9-4 and sending much of the crowd of 18,015 to the exits.

Mookie Betts also homered as the Red Sox (93-42) earned their third straight win and increased their AL East advantage to 8 1/2 games over the New York Yankees, who blew a late lead in an 8-7 loss to Detroit. Ryan Brasier (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth for his first win in his 28th major league appearance.

Chicago (53-81) wasted a terrific start by Lucas Giolito, who struck out eight while pitching 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball. Avisail Garcia homered and drove in three runs, and Yolmer Sanchez collected three hits in the opener of a 10-game homestand.

        DIAMONDBACKS 3, DODGERS 1

LOS ANGELES (AP) - David Peralta hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and NL West-leading Arizona defeated Los Angeles in the opener of a pivotal series.

The loss snapped the Dodgers' five-game winning streak, which they had put together against last-place San Diego and Texas. They struck out 15 times, including four by Chris Taylor.

Robbie Ray (4-2) gave up one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Brad Boxberger got the final two outs in the ninth to earn his 31st save in 37 chances.

Peralta sent his 26th homer into right field on the first pitch from Rich Hill with two outs, giving Arizona a 3-0 lead.

Hill (6-5) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. The left-hander struck out seven and walked none.

        BREWERS 2, REDS 1, 11 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) - Lorenzo Cain hit a home run off the top of the left field fence in the 11th inning and Milwaukee, a day after winning a slugfest that went extras, edged Cincinnati.

NL batting leader Christian Yelich went 0 for 4 with a bases-loaded walk for Milwaukee. On Wednesday night, he went 6 for 6 and hit for the cycle as the Brewers outlasted Cincinnati 13-12 in 10 innings.

The playoff-contending Brewers totaled just six hits in their latest victory. Cain hit the first pitch from Austin Brice (2-3) that hit the wall and bounced over for his 10th home run. Brice, recalled from Triple-A Louisville before the game, left with an apparent injury one out into the 11th.

Joakim Soria (1-0) allowed a hit with two strikeouts in a scoreless 10th to get the win. Josh Hader pitched the 11th for his 11th save.

        TIGERS 8, YANKEES 7

NEW YORK (AP) - Victor Martinez hit his second home run of the game and Niko Goodrum followed with a homer off Dellin Betances in the ninth inning, rallying Detroit past New York.

The Tigers, last in the majors in home runs, connected five times and ended a five-game losing streak.

Giancarlo Stanton hit his 300th career home run for the Yankees, who have lost three of four. They began the day 7 1/2 games behind Boston in the AL East and 4 1/2 games ahead of Oakland for the top wild-card spot.

Luke Voit hit a two-run homer in the seventh that put the Yankees ahead 7-5.

But Betances (4-4) walked Nicholas Castellanos with one out in the ninth and Martinez lined a drive to right for his 12th career multihomer game. Goodrum followed with a flyball that curled around the foul pole.

Alex Wilson (2-4) earned the win with a perfect eighth and Shane Greene recorded his 28th save.

        INDIANS 5, TWINS 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis hit a three-run homer that broke a sixth-inning tie and sent Cleveland over Minnesota.

Mike Clevinger (10-7) allowed two unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander struck out nine and gave up four hits.

Brad Hand, the Indians' third reliever, allowed a leadoff homer to Miguel Sano in the ninth. Mitch Garver drew a one-out walk, but Hand struck out Jake Cave and Tyler Austin for his 30th save overall, and sixth since being acquired from San Diego at the trade deadline.

Cleveland reliever Cody Allen, who allowed two runs in the seventh inning and was the losing pitcher Wednesday, was booed when he entered the game with one out in the eighth.

Jake Odorizzi (5-9) was charged with three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

        CARDINALS 5, PIRATES 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Harrison Bader and John Gant hit back-to-back home runs, Gant pitched into the sixth inning and St. Louis beat Pittsburgh.

The Cardinals have won 17 of 21 and took their tenth consecutive series, their longest series winning streak since 2009, when they also won ten in a row.

Gant (6-5) pitched out of a bases-loaded situation in the first and a two-on, no-out jam in the third to win for the third time in his last four tries. He struck out six in 5 2/3 innings and has allowed one earned run in his last 12 2/3 innings.

Pirates starter Joe Musgrove (5-8) opened the game with 21 consecutive strikes, a first in the majors since pitch tracking began in 1988, according to Stats. That control didn't do him much good, though. He gave up five runs in six innings.

        CUBS 5, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Tommy La Stella hit the first pinch-hit homer of his career against his former team, carrying Chicago over Atlanta in a matchup of NL division leaders.

After Atlanta went ahead with a three-run fifth, La Stella launched a two-run shot off Mike Foltynewicz (10-9) that nearly reached the Chop House restaurant above the right-field seats .

It was also La Stella's first homer of the season. Freddie Freeman had three RBIs for the Braves.

Brandon Kintzler (2-3) claimed the win by getting the final out of the fifth. Pedro Strop worked the ninth for his 11th save.

        ANGELS 5, ASTROS 2

HOUSTON (AP) - Andrew Heaney threw six scoreless innings, Andrelton Simmons capped a four-run sixth inning with a three-run double and Los Angeles beat Houston.

Heaney (8-8) scattered five hits with six strikeouts to earn his first road win since Sept. 2, 2015, at Oakland.

Justin Verlander (13-9) allowed three runs and five hits but struck out 11 in 5 1/3 innings. Verlander allowed three or more runs for the third straight start.

Tyler White hit a two-run homer to left field in the ninth as Houston avoided the shutout.

        PADRES 3, ROCKIES 2, 13 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Franmil Reyes homered with two outs in the 13th inning to give San Diego a victory over Colorado.

Reyes connected off Bryan Shaw (4-6) for his 12th homer. It was only the sixth hit for San Diego. The Rockies had only three hits.

Robert Stock (1-1) pitched three innings for the win.

Wil Myers committed three errors at third base and struck out three times. The Padres had 16 strikeouts.

        MARINERS 7, ATHLETICS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Wade LeBlanc pitched seven scoreless innings, Mitch Haniger hit his 23rd home run and Seattle jumped on Oakland early and held on for a victory.

Robinson Cano had two hits and an RBI after being dropped down a spot in the batting order after second baseman Jean Segura was scratched. Dee Gordon and Ryon Healy added two hits apiece. Haniger homered off Frankie Montas (5-4) with one out in the fourth.

LeBlanc (8-3) allowed three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. He retired 12 of his final 13 batters to win for the second time in his last seven starts.

            1) A final word on betting college football, from Alex Kolodziej, betting writer for The Score:

“…….however, a warning: More teams mean more opportunities, and more opportunities mean increased betting volume. And I’ll be the first to say that when Week 1 of college football arrives and there are 40 more games to choose from than the opening week of the NFL, there will be a raging impulse to take every nugget from your Phil Steele magazine and apply them.

Do not listen to that impulse. Be selective. Or be broke.”

J.A. Happ was having a good season with the Toronto Blue Jays and has thrived in Yankee pinstripes with an ERA under 2.40.

Like our waistlines after a tasty Labor Day barbeque, MLB rosters expand to accommodate September, the final month of the season. And as College Football and the NFL barge onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail. The question is which ones can we count on and which ones figure to be candidates for offseason Weight Watchers meetings?

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s September’s list. Enjoy the games.

              GOOD SEPTEMBER PITCHERS:

              Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians • 11-4 (7-2 H)

Carrasco is once again finishing the season with a flourish. Since July, he has really gotten in an excellent groove and is on pace to have his fourth straight strong year as a starter. Playing mostly weak opponents all month, Carrasco and Cleveland should pile up more wins this month.

              Cole Hamels, Chicago Cubs • 13-4 (7-2 H)

Hamels has stepped right into the Chicago Cubs rotation and has been motivated by the chance to get back to the playoffs. Cubs coaches have fine-tuned Hamels pitch selection and as a result his ERA is 0.69 with Chicago.

              J.A. Happ, New York Yankees • 11-4 (9-0 A)

Happ is another hurler dialed in with a team that is heading to the postseason. The All Star left-hander was having a good season and has thrived in the Yankee pinstripes with an ERA under 2.40. Likely, more winning days ahead.

              * Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers • 12-4 (6-2 A)

Remember all the talk of the “sky is falling” about Kershaw? Let's face it his ERA was almost 3.00, which by human standards is fantastic. But not for Kershaw, evidently. Since coming off the DL he's been dealing and guess what, his ERA this season now matches his career norms. Look for more W's in September.

              Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs • 13-4 (7-2 H)

After a few bumpy starts in July and August, Lester has gotten back on track and looks to be ready to be the clutch pitcher he's been throughout his career. The lefty has actually been tougher on the road, with more strikeouts, fewer walks and lower batting average allowed as compared to at Wrigley.

              Carlos Martinez, St. Louis Cardinals • 11-5 (6-2 A)

Not sure what to expect from Martinez at the moment. He's not pitched since July 30th and been on the DL with shoulder inflammation. His ERA has steadily been rising since June and his walks are way up. Stay tuned.

              Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals • 13-4 (7-0 A)

As great as Mad Max has pitched since 2013, this year is setting up to be his masterpiece, even on a .500 team. Scherzer's at a career-low for ERA, opposing batters are hitting under.190 against him and have an OBP of under .250. This is not supposed to happen to 34-year-old pitchers. #magnificent

              Luis Severino, New York Yankees • 10-1 (4-0 A)

The Yankees ace was pitching like Scherzer before running into trouble the middle of July. There is no doubt he struggled for a long stretch, however, upon closer inspection, his WHIP, batting average allowed and ERA are very close to career norms. Look for Severino to be fine this month. Note: the 10-1 record is also career mark for Severino.

              * Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals • 9-1 (3-0 A)

Once again, Strasburg, after a stellar start, landed on the DL. He's made a couple of late August starts and not been impressive. Typically he finds ways to win games late in the season, even without his best stuff. But can this occur every year?

              Josh Tomlin, Cleveland Indians • 10-3 (6-0 A)

Tomlin was terrible early for the Tribe and was sent to the bullpen and later landed on the DL. Unless he comes back and is fantastic, the 33-year might only get a spot start or two to see if he can make the playoff roster.

              * Justin Verlander, Houston Astros • 12-4 (7-2 A)

The Astros right-hander is on pace to produce a magnificent season like he did in 2011-12 and with Detroit. Like the other great pitchers that are Verlander's age, he made the adjustment and has continued to be outstanding.

              BAD SEPTEMBER PITCHERS:

              * Chris Archer, Pittsburgh Pirates • 3-13 (1-9 A)

It turns out Archer is anything but an ace as his career continues to spiral downward. All those years of him just pitching "in tough luck" cannot hide the fact his record is well below .500 and with an ERA to match. Look for more of the same this month.

              Ivan Nova, Pittsburgh Pirates • 3-10 (1-5 A)

Month by month, Nova has had an 'incredible' season. His first month he's at a 3.37 ERA, which is followed by 7.51. Nova rebounds exceptionally at 1.75 in June and July he's back up to 5.53. August gave us 4.44. September?

              * Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox • 5-10 (2-5 H)

Boston fans and backers have to be concerned with Sale being on the DL twice since July. Their near perfect season could take a major hit if Sale is not pitching well come late September before the playoffs. Buyer beware.

              Jordan Zimmermann, Detroit Tigers • 3-7 (2-5 H)

Zimmerman was on the “Play On” September list last year, but a winless September in 2017 bounces him to the “Play Against” category this season. Similar to other pitchers on this list, Zimmermann is a roller-coaster ride. Here we go again!

                                Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

                                13) According to the Sacramento Bee, a former top executive of the Sacramento Kings is suspected of siphoning off $13.4M from two of the team’s top sponsors and using the funds to buy beachfront property in Southern California.

FBI and federal prosecutors are investigating Jeffrey R. David, 44, the former chief revenue officer for the Kings who currently holds the same job with the Miami Heat.

                                12) There have been 81 walk-off homers in the major leagues this season, which is a new record.

                                11) Florida Atlantic has a QB named Chris Robison, a 4-star recruit from Texas who originally signed with Oklahoma out of high school and enrolled in Norman in January 2017, He was arrested for public intoxication three months later and was later tossed in August 2017 for another unspecified violation.

Now Robison is playing for Lane Kiffin at FAU; the Owls haven’t announced who the starting QB will be for their opener at Oklahoma, and most figure they’ll play more than one QB anyway, but has to be emotional for this kid to start his college career against the Sooners.

                                10) Phillies lost a game 5-4 this week when they had the tying run on 2nd base with one out; batter hits a fly ball to center, the pinch-runner on second (pitcher Vince Velasquez) tags up and goes to third, but he left second too early and Washington appealed the play and the game ended. Not the ideal way to lose a game when you’re in a pennant race.

                                9) A’s pitcher Trevor Cahill has started 17 games this year:
                                — Home: eight starts, 0.85 ERA
                                — Road: nine starts, 7.02 ERA

                                8) Houston Astros finally gave manager AJ Hinch a contract extension, which he earned by winning the World Series last year.

                                7) Giants dealt OF Andrew McCutchen to the Bronx for two prospects; does this mean Aaron Judge might not be ready for the playoffs?

                                6) David Price got hit on his left (pitching) wrist by a 102 mph line drive Wednesday and left the game. Last thing the Red Sox (or anyone) needs right now is an injury to a pitcher.

                                5) Albert Pujols had knee surgery, is done for this year. Shohei Ohtani will pitch for the Angels against Houston on the Sunday night ESPN game, his first start since June 6.

                                4) Memo to TV people; don’t show roughing-the-passer penalties in slow motion. EVERY hit looks like roughing if you don’t show it at game speed.

                                3) Royals traded 1B Lucas Duda to Atlanta; teams will equally divide the $600K Duda is due the rest of this season.

                                2) LSU’s starting QB Joe Burrow is a transfer from Ohio State; he threw 11 passes LY as the Buckeyes’ 3rd-string QB. Two of the three guys he beat out for the starting job have already transferred out of Baton Rouge.

Wonder how Bayou Bengal fans feel about Ohio State’s 3rd-string QB being their starter.

                                1) NFL teams will cut their rosters down from 90 players to 53 this weekend; to lot of us, those are just names on a computer screen, but those are 1,184 young guys who are looking for a job- guys with families and friends. Much respect to anyone who even made it to a training camp.
