    August 14, 2018

    By Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- Still Cashin'! The Indians are 27-0 SU as a road 200+ favorite off a road game in which they hit at least one home run; including 10-0 last season, 9-0 so far this season.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Nationals are 0-14 SU as a dog after a game as a road dog in which their opponent scored first, they took the lead, but lost and it is post All-Star break. In their last two in this spot, they were shut out.

    Hitter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Nationals are 0-9 SU on the road after a game in which Anthony Rendon had multiple hits. Washington was an average of MINUS 111 on the moneyline in these nine losses.

    Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Rockies are 0-10 OU in franchise history with German Marquez when he had a WHIP of at least 1.8 in his last start and the Rockies lost. Colorado has stayed UNDER by an average of 2.45 runs per game.

MLB Betting – Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies

Two of the top teams in the league begin a quick two-game series on Tuesday night, as the Boston Red Sox visit the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Red Sox lead the AL East, while the Phillies are battling with the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East. The probable pitching matchup for this Tuesday game that can be seen on MLB Network has Rick Porcello going against Nick Pivetta.

Let’s look at the matchup and MLB picks.

Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies
Date and Time: Tuesday, August 14, 2018, 7:05 p.m. ET
Location: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, PA
MLB Odds: Red Sox -129, O/U 9 Under
Probable Pitchers: Rick Porcello vs. Nick Pivetta
Red Sox vs. Phillies TV Coverage: MLB Network

The Red Sox are the best team in the league and they have the most road wins in the league with 43. They are 43-20 on the road, with 31 games going over the total, 31 going under, with one push. They are averaging about 5.5 runs per game and giving up 5.5 runs per contest.

The Phillies have been excellent at home this season, as they are 38-18 at home, with 26 games going over the total, 27 going under, with three pushes. They are averaging 4.3 runs per game and giving up 3.8 per contest. Both teams had Monday off to get ready for this series.

      Starting Pitchers

Porcello is 14-5 on the season with a 4.17 ERA. He was great two starts ago against the Yankees, but last time out he went just four innings and gave up seven runs and six hits in a loss to Toronto. Porcello has a gaudy win-loss record, but his ERA is over four and in three of his last five starts he has given up at least four runs.

Pivetta is 7-9 on the season with a 4.51 ERA. He is coming off an excellent outing, as he gave up no runs and five hits in six innings in a win against Arizona. That is now two straight quality starts for Pivetta.

      Key Stats

The Red Sox are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings against the Phillies. The Red Sox are 41-12 in their last 53 interleague games. The Red Sox are 43-13 in their last 56 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Red Sox are 40-14 in their last 54 vs. the National League East. The Red Sox are 43-19 in their last 62 road games.

The Phillies are 5-1 in their last 6 vs. the American League East. The Phillies are 5-1 in their last 6 interleague games. The Phillies are 42-19 in their last 61 home games. The Phillies are 11-5 in Pivetta’s last 16 home starts.

Looking at the total, the Under is 4-1 in the Red Sox last 5 vs. the National League East. The Under is 14-5-2 in the Red Sox last 21 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Under is 7-0-1 in the Phillies last 8 vs. the American League East. The Under is 14-4-3 in the Phillies last 21 interleague games. The Over is 5-1 in Pivetta’s last 6 home starts. The Under is 5-0-2 in the last 7 meetings.

      Red Sox vs. Phillies Picks

The question in this game is which pitcher do you trust? Porcello hasn’t really pitched that great this season but the Red Sox win most of his starts. Pivetta didn’t really pitch well in June or July after having a great early part of the season, but he has looked really good this month. Both teams have excellent trends, as Boston is very good on the road and Philly is very good at home.

I lean a little bit toward Boston simply because they are the better team and I don’t see much difference between Porcello and Pivetta. The trends on the total definitely point to the under, but I am leery about trusting either of these two starting pitchers. I will just take the Red Sox to get this road win.

Red Sox vs. Phillies Pick: Red Sox and Under
Red Sox vs. Phillies Score Prediction: Red Sox 5, Phillies 3

MLB Baseball Odds - San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers

A four-game losing streak has dropped the Los Angeles Dodgers out of first place in the National League West and they are currently on the outside of the playoff picture. Los Angeles has one of the most talented teams in the National League but it has to play well down the stretch in order to make the playoffs.

The Dodgers have a big game coming up against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. Los Angeles has the game at home and a good matchup on the mound so it should be favored to come away with the victory. San Francisco has hovered around .500 and needs to put together a big-time hot streak in order to compete for a playoff spot.

The Giants have upsets on the mind but it won’t be easy in MLB gambling.

The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers will face off on Tuesday, August 14th, 2018, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

We'll have MLB baseball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 MLB season.

        Odds Analysis

The Giants are 60-60 on the year. They have struggled on the road, with a record of 26-34 away from their own park. San Francisco has a negative-34 run-differential on the year so it would be a big surprise if this team somehow vaulted itself into postseason contention down the stretch.

The Dodgers are 64-56 on the season. They have a positive run-differential of 93 and have the most talented roster in the N.L. West but it has yet to fully come together at this point. Los Angeles is 31-29 at home on the year and needs to improve on that down the stretch.

        Probable Pitchers

The Giants are sending Andrew Suarez to the mound on Tuesday. He allowed three runs in the second inning last Tuesday but then settled down to throw three scoreless innings. He has thrown just 16 innings in his last three starts and has a 1-2 record with an 8.44 ERA. This will be his first career start against the Dodgers.

Alex Wood is coming off the DL to make this start for the Dodgers. He had been dealing with left abductor tendinitis. He made his last start on August 3 and gave up just one earned run and four hits against the Astros. He is 2-1 in his last three starts with a 1.53 ERA.

        Injury Update

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen has been sidelined with an irregular heartbeat and won’t be available for this game. He is tied for the National League lead with 35 saves and has elite stuff, and the Dodgers are having to patch things together without him.

Jansen is confident he will be back this year, but his absence currently looms large. The Dodgers have already had some hiccups without him and hope to be able to close out this one if the opportunity presents itself. They were one out away from a win on Monday night and yet couldn’t close the door on the Giants and blew another game.

        Free MLB ATS Picks

There has not been much to like about Suarez, while Wood has been solid. It is hard to call any game in mid-August a must-win game, but this one sure feels like for Los Angeles after what happened on Monday night. The Dodgers have the superior offense as well as the home field advantage, and Wood is a better pitcher than Suarez, so they shouldn’t have much trouble coming away with the victory.

Los Angeles needs every win it can gather right now and they will cruise in this one in MLB gambling. The over is also worth a look considering how bad the Los Angeles bullpen has been lately.

MLB ATS Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers 6, San Francisco Giants 3

          • Acuna hits another leadoff homer, Braves beat Marlins 10-6
            August 15, 2018

ATLANTA (AP) Ronald Acuna Jr. became the youngest player in major league history to homer in five straight games, hitting a leadoff shot on the first pitch and later adding a three-run drive to help the surging Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 10-6 on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old Acuna homered on Miami's first pitch for the second straight night and became the first player to hit a leadoff homer in three consecutive games since Baltimore's Brady Anderson went deep in four straight in 1996. On Monday, he became the fourth player in major league history to hit leadoff homers in both games of a doubleheader.

Acuna connected in the first off Trevor Richards and homered to right-center, his 19th of the year, off Adam Conley (3-3) to give the Braves a 10-6 lead in the seventh.

Freddie Freeman hit his 20th homer to tie it in the sixth, and Dansby Swanson had a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh as the NL East-leading Braves won for the 13th time in 17 games.

Acuna, who has homered in seven of his last eight games, and Charlie Culberson homered on Richards' first two pitches. Jesse Biddle (4-1) won in relief.

            ATHLETICS 3, MARINERS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Jed Lowrie hit his 100th career homer long after his line drive knocked Mariners ace James Paxton out of the game, and the Oakland Athletics moved within one game of the slumping Houston Astros for the AL West lead.

Felix Hernandez (8-11) replaced Paxton in the first relief appearance of his career after 398 starts. The former Cy Young Award winner, who has struggled all year and was demoted to the bullpen last week, allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Paxton suffered a bruise on his left forearm after Lowrie's line drive popped him in the first inning, and X-rays taken later were negative.

Mike Fiers (8-6) gave up two runs on six hits in his second start since being acquired in a trade from Detroit. Oakland won its fourth straight and improved to 17-6 since the All-Star break.

Robinson Cano returned to Seattle's lineup after serving an 80-game suspension for using a diuretic that can mask performance-enhancing drugs. The eight-time All-Star batted second and played first base, going 1 for 4.

Four Oakland relievers combined to pitch three scoreless innings. Blake Treinen worked the ninth for his 32nd save in 36 opportunities.

            WHITE SOX 6, TIGERS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Ryan LaMarre hit his first major league home run, a drive that bounced off the top of the bullpen shelter in left field and into the hands of his uncle, as Chicago beat Detroit.

LaMarre was born 10 miles north of Comerica Park and played college baseball at Michigan.

Chicago won for the second time in eight games, improving to 2-9 against Detroit this season.

Lucas Giolito (8-9) allowed three runs in six innings. Xavier Cedeno got his first save since Aug. 11, 2015.

Blaine Hardy (4-5) gave up four runs in four innings.

            ROCKIES 5, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story each went deep, German Marquez pitched well in a matchup with Justin Verlander, and Colorado beat slumping Houston.

The Astros have matched a season high with five straight losses and extended their home skid to nine games.

Colorado trailed 1-0 and Verlander (11-8) had retired 13 of 14 when DJ LeMahieu singled with two outs in the sixth inning. Arenado then hit a 96-mph fastball into the third row in right field for his 30th homer.

Marquez (10-9) allowed just three hits and a run while fanning seven in seven innings.

Verlander was denied his 200th win again as he dropped his second straight despite striking out 11 in six innings, allowing six hits and two runs.

            CARDINALS 6, NATIONALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - John Gant homered for his first major league hit and pitched one-run ball into the sixth inning, helping St. Louis to its season-high seventh consecutive victory.

Kolten Wong had three hits and three RBIs as St. Louis (65-55) pulled within four games of the NL Central-leading Cubs and moved within one game of the Phillies for the second NL wild card. The Cardinals also improved to 18-9 since Mike Shildt became interim manager on July 13, the most wins for a manager through his first 27 games in franchise history.

The Nationals (60-60) have dropped six of eight to fall eight games behind Atlanta in the NL East.

Gant (5-4) permitted four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He was 0 for 30 for his career when he drove a 1-1 pitch from Gio Gonzalez (7-9) over the wall in left in the second.

Jordan Hicks got three outs for his fourth save in eight chances.

            RED SOX 2, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Pinch-hitter Brock Holt hit a tiebreaking solo homer, Rick Porcello threw seven impressive innings and the major league-leading Red Sox won again.

Sandy Leon also went deep for Boston, which improved to 86-35. The Red Sox increased their total to 168 homers, matching their number from last year when they hit an AL-low 168.

Porcello (15-5) gave up one run and two hits, striking out 10. Craig Kimbrel worked the ninth for his 36th save.

Rhys Hoskins homered, but the Phillies wasted a solid outing from Nick Pivetta. He allowed one run and three hits in six innings.

Holt hit the first pitch he saw from Tommy Hunter (3-2) in the eighth off the video screen on the facing of the second deck in right field.

            INDIANS 8, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) - Jose Ramirez hit his 36th home run and Cleveland ace Corey Kluber extended his dominance over Cincinnati.

The Indians have won the first two games of the series by a combined 18-4 despite a rough week with outfielder Leonys Martin hospitalized with a serious bacterial infection and right-hander Trevor Bauer on the DL with a fractured right leg.

Kluber (15-6) allowed one run and five hits and struck out seven in seven innings. In his past four starts against the Reds, he is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

Sal Romano (7-10) left after allowing six runs and seven hits in 1 2/3 innings, the shortest start of his career.

            BREWERS 7, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Ryan Braun hit two of Milwaukee's four homers, Jhoulys Chacin struck out 10 in seven innings and the Brewers cut into the Cubs NL Central lead.

Lorenzo Cain homered on Jose Quintana's second pitch. Braun hit a two-run drive in the first and third. Erik Kratz added a solo homer in the sixth and an RBI double in the eighth.

Chacin (12-4) allowed three hits and walked two. The Brewers pulled within two games of the Cubs after dropping eight of 11 against them.

Quintana (10-9) got tagged for five runs and six hits in five innings after dominating the Brewers over seven previous starts.

            YANKEES 4, RAYS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - J.A. Happ allowed one soft single in seven shutout innings to win his third consecutive start since being traded from Toronto to the New York Yankees.

Happ (13-6) struck out four and walked four, throwing 71 of 106 pitches for strikes. The only Tampa Bay hit he permitted was a flyball by C.J. Cron that fell in front of left fielder Brett Gardner in the fourth.

Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman completed a crisp three-hitter that took just 2 hours, 32 minutes. Shaking off some recent struggles, Chapman worked a one-hit ninth for his 31st save in 33 chances.

Hunter Wood (0-1) got the loss.

            DIAMONDBACKS 6, RANGERS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt hit his 27th homer to put Arizona ahead to stay, and All-Star lefty Patrick Corbin worked seven innings for his 10th victory.

Corbin (10-4) struck out seven without a walk while allowing three runs and throwing 66 of 96 pitches for strikes. He has made 10 consecutive starts without allowing a homer, the longest span for the Diamondbacks in 15 years and matching Boston's Chris Sale for the longest active streak in the majors.

Goldschmidt went deep to left in the first with a solo shot off Yovani Gallardo (7-2). Arizona led 4-0 in the fourth after Daniel Descalso had an RBI double and scored on a wild pitch. Descalso earlier had an RBI groundout.

Brad Boxberger worked the ninth for his 27th save in 32 chances.

            TWINS 5, PIRATES 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jorge Polanco got two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs and Miguel Sano hit a two-run homer, leading Minnesota over Pittsburgh.

Jake Odorizzi (5-7) won for the first time in six starts, striking out nine in 5 2/3 innings. Trevor Hildenberger, the Twins' fourth reliever, pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save since the trade of closer Fernando Rodney.

Jameson Taillon (9-9) finished six innings and allowed three earned runs, the 14th straight time he's taken the mound and surrendered no more than that.

            BLUE JAYS 6, ROYALS 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kevin Pillar hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning to lift Toronto over Kansas.

Blaine Boyer (2-1) retired his first two batters before walking Aledmys Diaz and backing Pillar into an 0-2 count. Pillar hit the next pitch over the wall down the left field line.

Ken Giles worked a perfect ninth for his 14th save and second with the Blue Jays since being acquired from Houston on July 30.

Salvador Perez and Jorge Bonifacio hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh off Jake Petricka (2-1) to give the Royals a short-lived 5-4 lead.

            ORIOLES 6, METS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) - Chris Davis, Adam Jones and Tim Beckham each homered to back a strong performance by starter Andrew Cashner, and Baltimore snapped a five-game skid.

Baltimore won both games against the Mets at Citi Field on June 5-6 and can complete the season sweep Wednesday.

Cashner (4-10) retired 10 consecutive batters before Jeff McNeil singled on a ground ball that caromed off first base in the fourth inning. Cashner allowed two runs and five hits with three strikeouts and three walks over seven innings.

Davis broke a 2-2 tie with a towering shot in the seventh off Bobby Wahl (0-1). Renato Nunez added an RBI single later that inning off Paul Sewald.

                Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                13) What does it take to get fired at Ohio State?

The Ohio State assistant football coach who didn’t get fired after his ex-wife accused him of domestic violence in 2015, had been arrested two years earlier on a DUI charge- the judge in the DUI case was a member of the Ohio State President’s Club, and the coach got slapped on the wrist.

                Go figure.

The assistant coach has finally been fired, by the way.

                12) Obviously, there isn’t enough good news in the world, so it is my pleasure to tell you that on August 27, Weird Al Yankovic will be getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The ceremony is free and open to the public; if you’re in the LA area, what else have you got to do on a Monday morning (11:30am)?

                11) In his career, Clayton Kershaw has thrown 318.1 innings against the Giants; his ERA in those innings is a paltry 1.58.

                10) If you play fantasy football, this might help you at your draft. Judging from stuff you read about the Cowboys, they’re emphasizing fade routes to the corner of the end zone this summer, which means more passes to WR’s than tight ends, now that Jason Witten has retired.

                9) Speaking of which, must be serious money in fantasy football, seeing how ESPN ran a 27-hour fantasy football marathon this week, mostly on ESPN2, signing up around 1.5 million teams to play this season.

                8) This from agent Tom O’Connell; his client (Phillies’ P) Zach Eflin is “being demoted” to AAA, even though he really isn’t, its a procedural thing. He won’t miss a turn in the majors, but he loses $20,000 in salary and nine days of major league service time because of it.

“While this transaction on the surface seems purely administrative, it caught us by surprise and is tremendously disappointing. Major-league starters have a strict routine that they adhere to that allows them to be successful; this roster move affects that. While the club may feel that they are doing what’s best for the organization, they also lose sight of the human element and how it will affect the player.”

Phillies did same thing with Nick Pivetta last year; I hope they’re reimbursing the guys after the season. Otherwise, they’re creating ill will over what amounts to pocket change (for them).

                7) Ronald Acuna hit leadoff homers in both games of the Braves’ doubleheader Monday; he is only 4th player ever to do that, joining Brady Anderson in 1999, Rickey Henderson in 1993.

Before that, only time it was done was way back in 1913.

                6) In baseball, 47% of replay challenges result in reversals.

If someone had told me before instant replay started in baseball that 47% of calls would be overturned, I wouldn’t have believed them. Despite the delays, instant replay obviously has value, because getting calls right is good for the game.

                5) Baseball doings:
                — New York (A) put CC Sabathia (knee) on the DL
                — White Sox 2B Yoan Moncada (root canal) missed Tuesday night’s game
                — Indians’ P Trevor Bauer is on DL; he broke a bone in his leg when he was hit with a line drive in his last start.

                4) For the first time in his career, golfer Sergio Garcia missed the cut in all four majors in one year. Not going when you’re trying to get named to the Ryder Cup team.

                3) Random stat: Major league hitters miss on 22.9% of their swings.

                2) Former big leaguer Tom Paciorek subs as the analyst on White Sox games; he seems like a very nice guy, also kind of funny. Fun to listen to. He subs for Steve Stone, who is also very good, very smart, but not a funny guy.

                1) Good advice from motivational writer Jon Gordon:

“No matter what anyone says, just show up and do the work.
If they praise you, show up and do the work.
If they criticize you, show up and do the work.
If no one even notices you, just show up and do the work.
Just keep showing up, doing the work, and leading the way…….”

                • LEADING OFF: Acuna provides instant pop, Darvish gets closer
                  August 14, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Wednesday:

                  ACUNA AGAIN!

Atlanta rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. has homered five games in a row - at 20, he's the youngest major leaguer to do that. He's also hit leadoff home runs in three straight, connecting the last two days on the first pitch Miami threw.

Acuna later added his 19th homer with a three-run drive in the seventh inning Tuesday night.

Brady Anderson was last player with so much leadoff success, homering four straight times to start games for Baltimore in 1996.

Acuna has matched the Atlanta record for consecutive games with a home run set by Brian McCann in 2006. Acuna will try to keep the streaks going when the Braves face Jose Urena and the Marlins at SunTrust Park.

                  SKIDDING

Minus MVP Jose Altuve, the AL West-leading Astros are struggling. They've matched a season high with five straight losses and have dropped nine in a row at home. Houston will try to reverse the slides when Gerrit Cole (10-5, 2.75 ERA) starts vs. Colorado lefty Tyler Anderson (6-4, 3.94) at Minute Maid Park.

                  THAT HURTS

Mariners ace James Paxton will see how he's feeling, a day after he was hit in the left forearm by Jed Lowrie's line drive. The big lefty was forced to leave in the first inning at Oakland and diagnosed with a bruise. Paxton is 10-5, including a no-hitter vs. Toronto, and a 3.68 ERA for the playoff contenders.

                  GETTING CLOSE

The Cubs will check on Yu Darvish and if he's OK, the right-hander could go on a minor league rehab assignment. Darvish threw about 55 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday.

Sidelined because of triceps and elbow injuries, Darvish has not pitched since he won at Cincinnati on May 20. He is 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA in eight starts after signing a $126 million, six-year deal with Chicago in February.

                  MAYBE

Second baseman Ian Kinsler could return from a strained left hamstring when the Red Sox play at Philadelphia. The 36-year-old was sent from the Angels to Boston late last month before the trade deadline. In three games for his new team, the four-time All-Star went 4 for 10, scored three runs, stole two bases and made a couple of sharp plays in the field.

                  SHORT STARTS

Chris Archer starts for the third time since being traded from Tampa Bay to Pittsburgh. The two-time All-Star hasn't gone more than five innings so far for the Pirates, and will try to add a little length when he pitches at Minnesota.

                  STREAKING

Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler (7-6, 3.82 ERA) tries to win his sixth straight start when he pitches at Camden Yards. He held the Orioles scoreless over seven innings June 6, but did not get a decision.

                  • Puig takes swing at Hundley, both ejected as benches clear
                    August 15, 2018

LOS ANGELES (AP) Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig took a swing at San Francisco Giants catcher Nick Hundley and both players were ejected during a benches-clearing scrap in the seventh inning Tuesday night.

Puig swatted his bat in frustration after fouling off a pitch from Tony Watson, and Hundley said something to the mercurial slugger while still in his crouch. Puig turned around and walked toward Hundley, the catcher stood up, and they stood face to face and argued for a moment before Puig shoved Hundley twice.

That brought players out of the benches and bullpens. Puig and Hundley were momentarily separated, but Puig ducked around teammates, coaches and manager Dave Roberts before reaching back to hit Hundley. He smacked Hundley with an open hand across the front of his catcher's mask.

The players were then separated again for good. After discussing with both managers, the umpires ejected both Puig and Hundley.

It was the fourth career ejection for Puig, who had also got into a skirmish with Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner in 2014.

                            Phillin' Up the Unders

The Philadelphia Phillies have been blessing total bettors with a steady stream of 'under' results lately, including Tuesday's 2-1 interleague setback against the Boston Red Sox. It has been a combination of factors leading to the unders lately. First, Philadelphia ranks first in the National League with a 3.26 ERA since the All-Star break, although they're just 12-11 during the span with 206 strikeouts over 215 2/3 innings. They have needed that great pitching, as the offense has been anemic, posting just a .226 batting average in the 23 games since the break, second-worst in the National League only ahead of the lowly Miami Marlins.

The starting pitching staff has been on point, with four of the five starters posting a 3.68 ERA or less since the break. All-Star Aaron Nola leads the way with a 2.16 ERA in his four starts since the Mid-Summer Classic, while Vince Velasquez has a 2.31 ERA in four starts and a relief appearance. Jake Arrieta and Nick Pivetta have matching 3.68 ERA over 29 1/3 innings each over their five outings since the break, with Pivetta posted a sparkling 1.02 WHIP in his five outings with 40 strikeouts and just four walks issued. He has simply been on fire. While Maikel Franco and Nick Williams are batting .302 since the break with eight extra-base hits each, and Rhys Hoskins has belted nine homers in the second half, everyone else on the team is hitting .250 or worse. It's a recipe for plenty of under results until the bats start to get going again.

                            Looking Ahead

                            Wednesday, Aug. 15

We mentioned the Phillies above, and touched on the success of Velasquez a bit. He will take the ball against the Red Sox on Hump Day. The 'under' is a perfect 7-0 in Velasquez's past seven assignments while going 4-0 in his past four home outings. The under is also 7-2 over his past nine against teams with a winning overall record. The Phillies have been hitting the under plenty in interleague battles, too, as the under is 16-6-4 in their past 26 against the American League, and 9-1-1 in their past 11 against AL East foes. The under is also a perfect 8-0 in their past eight home games against teams with a road winning percentage over .600, including Tuesday's 2-1 setback against the BoSox. For Boston, the under is 3-0-1 in their past four overall, 3-0-1 in their past four on the road and 9-0-2 in their past 11 when allowed two or fewer runs in their previous game. In addition, the under is 8-2-1 in their past 11 interleague road contests, and 4-0 in their past four against the NL East. Between these teams, the under is 6-0-2 in the past eight meetings, and 3-1-1 in the past five at The Vault.

In the Gateway City, the Cardinals host the Nationals with RHP Jeremy Hellickson facing LHP Austin Gomber. Total bettors will want to slam the under when Hellboy is on the mound for the Nats, as the under is 10-1 over his past 11 assignments on the road, while going 14-2 across his past 16 starts overall. The under is also 4-0 in his past four against teams with a winning overall record and 5-0 in his past five against NL Central foes. For Washington, the under is 36-16 in the past 52 road games while going 11-5 in their past 16 vs. Central clubs. For the Cards, it's the complete opposite, with the over hitting in four in a row, five of the past six at home. The over is 17-8-2 in the past 27 against NL East clubs, too. The over is also 6-1-4 in the past 11 meetings at Busch Stadium II, while going 8-2-1 in the past 11 meetings overall in this series.

It's southpaw-on-southpaw when LHP Derek Holland and LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu lock horns at Chavez Ravine. The under is 3-0-1 in San Francisco's past four overall, while going 15-5-2 in their past 22 road outings and 9-2-2 in their past 13 road games against a left-handed starter. The under is 3-1-1 in Holland's past five starts, 11-4 in his past 15 against teams with a winning overall record and 8-2-1 in his past 11 road outings. The under is also 16-6-2 in Frisco's past 24 inside the division. For the Dodgers, the under is 12-3-1 in their past 16 inside the division, while going 4-0-1 in their past five overall and 6-1 in their past seven against winning sides. The under is also 4-0 in Ryu's past four starts at home, while going 19-9-2 in the past 30 against teams with a winning overall mark.

                            Betting On The Wind

The winds will be mostly tranquil across baseball, although they'll experience 9-12 mph winds blowing out to left field for the Brewers-Cubs afternoon contest, as well as a 10-14 mph jetstream to right-center field for the Mariners-Athletics contest. Other than that, wind will not be a factor anywhere else.

                            Thursday, Aug. 16

In the afternoon game between the Nationals and Cards, RHP Tanner Roark will battle RHP Jack Flaherty. The under has hit in 36 of Washington's past 52 road games heading into Wednesday's tilt, whilg going 48-22-3 in their past 73 on the road vs. RHP. The under is 12-5-1 in Tanner Roark's past 18 on the road, but the over is 5-2 in his past seven outings overall. The under is 23-9-2 in Roark's past 34 against teams with a winning overall mark, too. For the Cards, the under is 3-1-1 in their past five vs. RHP, while going 7-3 in the past 10 during the fourth game of a series. However, the over is 6-1 in Flaherty's past seven assignments, and 17-8-2 in their past 27 against NL East clubs. The over is also 4-0 in their past four at home against teams with a losing overall road record.

The Blue Jays and Royals will battle in a matchup of RHPs Sam Gaviglio and Glenn Sparkman. That matchup won't exactly remind people of Jacob deGrom vs. Max Scherzer. The over is 6-2 in Gaviglio's past eight starts on the road, while going 9-3 in Toronto's past 12 games on the road. Head into Wednesday's tilt the over was 8-2 in their past 10 on the road against RHP, too. The over is 7-1 in Kansas City's past eight against a right-handed starter, and 6-1 in their past seven against teams with a losing overall record.

                            Friday, Aug. 17

Reds RHP Anthony DeSclafani takes the ball for the series opener against the Giants. The righty from the same hometown as Bruce Springsteen has been hard on the opposition lately. He has yielded just one run over his past 14 innings, and the under is 3-1 across his past four outings after a 6-0 over run in his six starts from June 17-July 15.

Rangers LHP Mike Minor will hit the mound looking to stay hot against the Angels on Friday night. Since the All-Star break he is 3-0 with a 3.42 ERA with the opposition hitting just .207 against him. If you're going to pound unders with Minor, he better be at home. That's where he'll be Friday, and he is 5-2 with a 3.33 ERA in 12 starts with a .220 opponent batting average at Globe Life Park as opposed to a dismal 4-4 record and 6.48 ERA in 10 road outings.

Mariners LHP Wade LeBlanc takes the ball looking to stay hot at home. He is 6-1 with a 3.50 ERA across 10 starts and two relief outings at home, and the opposition is hitting just .222 against him in 61 2/3 innings with 53 strikeouts and just 12 walks allowed. The under is 6-1 in LeBlanc's past seven starts overall, too.
