  • LEADING OFF: Happ debuts for Yanks, Astros minus Altuve
    July 28, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors Sunday:

    HAPPENING

J.A. Happ makes his Yankees debut, three days after New York got him from Toronto in a trade for Brandon Drury and minor league outfielder Billy McKinney. The 35-year-old lefty starts out at home against Kansas City.

Happ has enjoyed success over Boston in his career. With the Yankees chasing the AL East-leading Red Sox, Happ is set to pitch again next weekend at Fenway Park.

    ALTUVE OUT

The AL West-leading Astros will have to do without star second baseman Jose Altuve for a while. The AL MVP has been put on the disabled list for the first time in his career, sidelined by soreness in his right knee.

The three-time batting champion is hitting .329 with nine home runs and 46 RBIs this season. Altuve didn't play Friday or Saturday, with versatile Marwin Gonzalez filling in at second.

    MORE DEALS

As Tuesday's trade deadline approaches, more and more players are on the go. In the latest swap, the busy Yankees sent relievers Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos to St. Louis for first baseman Luke Voit.

The trade Saturday night was New York's third in five days. They got reliever Zach Britton from Baltimore on Tuesday and acquired starter J.A. Happ from Toronto on Thursday.

    SKIDDING

The Braves have lost four straight and 13 of 18, mostly because their bats have gone quiet. They'll try to keep from falling farther behind Philadelphia in the NL East race when lefty Sean Newcomb (9-5, 3.41 ERA) starts at SunTrust Park against Dodgers righty Ross Stripling (8-2, 2.43).

      • Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Most money spent in NFL free agency this season:

        1) Jets $84,140,000

        2) Bears $81,520,000

        3) 49ers $74,610,000

        4) Browns $58,106,666

        5) Saints $57,807,500

        6) Lions $55,493,000

        **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer night

        13) Saturday was the great Vida Blue’s 69th birthday; damn, typing that made me feel old.

Blue was Dwight Gooden before Dwight Gooden; he was a lefty wunderkind who led the Oakland A’s to the 1971 AL West title, then struggled thru a lengthy contract squabble in ’72, but he saved the deciding game of the ’72 ALCS as the A’s won the first of three consecutive World Series.

I was 11 years old when he became the answer to a great trivia question, last switch-hitter to win MVP of the American League (AL pitchers still hit in ’71).

Vida Blue wound up with a career record of 209-161- he was underrated. Happy birthday!!!

        12) How does Allen Trammell get into the Hall of Fame but not Lou Whitaker?

        11) According to Baseball Prospectus, when teams have the bases loaded with no one out, they score at least one run 85% of the time.

        10) Angels 11, Mariners 4— Francisco Arcia, a 28-year old rookie catcher, has 10 RBI in his first two major league games- thats an all-time record.

        9) Nick Saban makes $7.5M a year coaching Alabama’s football team; Alabama governor Kay Ivey makes $119,500 a year running the state.

        8) Kansas City 10, New York 2— This game was bet down late to NY -$450; depending on who you ask, this game or Astros (Verlander) against Detroit on July 15th was the highest betting line so far this season.

Please, if you don’t learn anything else from reading this space, never, ever lay more than -$200 on a regular season baseball game.

        7) Coming into this weekend, the 7th inning ERA for the Colorado Rockies’ bullpen this season was 7.93, which explains why they traded for reliever Seunghwan Oh.

        6) From the AP: Baker Mayfield is paying for the Browns’ QB’s to hang out in an RV at training camp.

As part of his initiation into the NFL, the #1 overall draft pick is funding a camper that the Browns QBs go to between practice sessions to relax. The recreational vehicle is parked just outside the training facility.

Backup QB Drew Stanton brought the idea of the camper from his time with the Detroit Lions, and says Mayfield initially thought he was kidding. Stanton says “it’s just someplace that you can go. You can get out of these four walls that start to close in on you after a period of time.”

        5) In the first seven games after Manny Machado was traded, Orioles’ 2B Jonathon Schoop was 11-for-27 (.407) with six HR’s, 11 RBI.

        4) Mason Williams is a rookie OF with the Reds; his grandfather is Walt (No Neck) Williams, who played for the White Sox a long time ago and actually had no neck. Good ballplayer; he hit .270 in ten major league seasons.

        3) Last three years, when the home team is favored in Arizona Cardinal games, the Redbirds are 10-18 vs spread; 7-11 as a home favorite, 3-7 as a road underdog.

        2) Over the last decade, Atlanta Falcons are 12-4 vs spread as a home underdog.

        1) Last four years, Buffalo Bills are a combined 33-31; that surprised me a little, but they were +28 in turnovers in those games— you go +28 in turnovers, you should be over .500.

                  • Newcomb falls 1 out short of no-hitter, Braves beat Dodgers
                    July 29, 2018

ATLANTA (AP) Sean Newcomb came within one strike of pitching the first no-hitter by the Atlanta Braves since 1994, denied when Chris Taylor sharply singled in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

Newcomb had a 2-2 count with two outs in the ninth inning when Taylor hit a hard grounder beyond the reach of diving third baseman Johan Camargo. That came on the career-high 134th and final pitch by the 25-year-old lefty.

Newcomb (10-5) left to a thunderous standing ovation from the sellout crowd at SunTrust Park as manager Brian Snitker removed him. Snitker took the ball and gave it back to Newcomb as a keepsake - instead, Newcomb simply tossed it toward the Atlanta dugout as he walked off, wanting no souvenir of the near-miss.

Newcomb apologized about an hour after the game for racist, homophobic and sexist tweets he sent as a teenager, calling them ''some stupid stuff.''

Ross Stripling (8-3) was subpar in his second straight start, allowing four runs, seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts in four innings.

                    RED SOX 3, TWINS 0

BOSTON (AP) - Nathan Eovaldi pitched seven impressive innings in his first start with Boston, J.D. Martinez drove in all three runs to increase his major league-leading RBI total to 89 and the Red Sox beat Minnesota for their 18th victory in 22 games.

Martinez had a double, single and walk, and Andrew Benintendi added two hits and a walk for the Red Sox. The AL East-leaders improved to a majors' best 74-33 by winning three of four in the weekend series.

Acquired in trade from Tampa Bay for a minor league pitcher on Wednesday, Eovaldi (4-4) gave up four hits, striking out five without issuing a walk. Matt Barnes pitched the eighth and Craig Kimbrel got the final three outs for his 33rd save.

Jose Berrios (10-8) was in trouble every inning, giving up three runs on nine hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 4 2/3 in his first career start in Fenway Park.

                    YANKEES 6, ROYALS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - J.A. Happ made the midseason impact the Yankees hoped for, pitching one-run ball over six innings to win his New York debut.

Three days after New York acquired the 35-year-old left-hander from Toronto for infielder Brandon Drury and outfield prospect Billy McKinney, Happ took a shutout into the fifth before Salvador Perez's opposite-field home run into the Yankees bullpen in right-center. Happ (11-6) struck out two and walked one, and the first-time All-Star ended a four-start winless streak.

Aaron Hicks hit a two-run homer in the first off the screen attached to the right-field foul pole, a drive off Burch Smith (1-2). Hicks also doubled, singled and walked for the Yankees, who took three over four against the woeful Royals (32-73), who traded star third baseman Mike Moustakas to Milwaukee on Friday.

                    RANGERS 4, ASTROS 3

HOUSTON (AP) - Jurickson Profar hit a go-ahead double deflected by the pitcher and stayed in despite getting kicked in the face as Texas became the first team to sweep Houston this year.

Texas took three in a row from the AL West leaders and extended the Astros' skid to a season-high four games.

The last-place Rangers won even though they struck out 19 times - the most Houston pitchers have recorded in a nine-inning game in franchise history.

It was 1-all in the sixth when Rougned Odor doubled and Profar hit a grounder nicked by Lance McCullers (10-6) that rolled into the outfield. Astros second baseman Yuli Gurriel lost his balance and kicked Profar in the cheek with his cleats as he slid into second base.

Mike Minor (7-6) allowed four hits and two runs while striking out eight in six innings for his first win since June 27. Keone Kela allowed a run in the ninth before retiring George Springer with two on to get his 24th save.

                    ROCKIES 3, ATHLETICS 2

DENVER (AP) - German Marquez continued Colorado's strong starting pitching, Tom Murphy homered and the Rockies beat Oakland to sweep the interleague series.

Marquez (9-8) returned from paternity leave to deliver 7 2/3 solid innings and help the Rockies win for the 11th time in 13 games. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out eight. He left to a standing ovation after fanning Nick Martini.

Khris Davis and Matt Chapman homered for the A's, who lost just their first series in their last 12. Oakland had won six straight games before being swept in Colorado.

                    METS 1, PIRATES 0

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Zack Wheeler pitched six strong innings and drove in the lone run, leading New York over Pittsburgh.

Wheeler (5-6) allowed five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk, and got his fourth RBI of the season on a double in the fifth. He won a third straight start after giving up a combined six runs in 14 2/3 innings over his past two.

The Mets split the four-game series with the Pirates, who lost for just the fourth time in their past 19 games.

Wheeler's double helped his own cause after Luis Guillorme singled with two outs. He sent a drive off Joe Musgrove (4-5) over right fielder Gregory Polanco to score Guillorme from second.

                    INDIANS 8, TIGERS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Yonder Alonso, Melky Cabrera and Edwin Encarnacion all homered for Cleveland, and Corey Kluber pitched into the eighth inning in a victory over Detroit.

Rajai Davis added a triple and two doubles for the Indians, who took two of three in Detroit and extended their AL Central lead to nine games over Minnesota. It's the largest division lead in the major leagues at the moment.

Kluber (13-6) allowed a run and five hits in 7 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Jordan Zimmermann (4-3) allowed five runs and six hits in three innings.

                    ORIOLES 11, RAYS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) - Adam Jones had three hits and an RBI in what could be his final game with the Orioles, and Baltimore beat Tampa Bay for a rare series win.

The rebuilding Orioles are looking to deal Jones before Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline. Now in his 11th year with Baltimore, the 31-year-old center fielder becomes a free agent after the season.

Jones is on a tear, batting .417 during a nine-game hitting streak. He went 3 for 4 with a walk and notched his 85th stolen base with the Orioles, moving him into a tie for 10th place with Don Buford on the franchise list.

Chris Davis hit a pair of two-run homers, and Austin Wynns and Jonathan Schoop also connected for the Orioles.

                    GIANTS 8, BREWERS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Buster Posey had four hits, including a three-run double to help San Francisco break out of a collective funk, and the Giants beat Milwaukee to avoid a four-game sweep.

Pablo Sandoval added a two-run triple before leaving with a possible hamstring injury, Gorkys Hernandez hit his 12th home run and Evan Longoria had a sacrifice fly, his first RBI since spending more than a month on the disabled list.

Andrew Suarez (4-6) allowed four runs in six innings for his first win since June 29.

Ryan Braun, Travis Shaw and Hernan Perez homered for Milwaukee. Christian Yelich singled to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

San Francisco had been held to two or fewer runs in 11 of its 22 games in July before breaking out against Milwaukee starter Junior Guerra (6-7) in the third.

                    REDS 4, PHILLIES 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Luis Castillo allowed four hits in a season-high seven innings, Scooter Gennett hit a two-run homer and Cincinnati wrapped up its long homestand with a third consecutive win over Philadelphia.

Phillip Ervin and Curt Casali each had an RBI and run for the Reds, who won a four-game series against the Phillies for the first time in nearly 21 years.

Castillo (6-8) allowed four hits and walk with a season-high nine strikeouts to earn his first decision in six starts since a 6-3 win over the Cubs on June 22. He retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced, and the only baserunner in that span was eliminated on a double play.

Philadelphia has lost Zach Eflin's last three starts after winning six straight. In his second start since coming off the disabled list with a right middle finger blister, Eflin (7-3) allowed seven hits and four runs with one walk and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

BLUE JAYS 7, WHITE SOX 4

CHICAGO (AP) - Brandon Drury hit a go-ahead, two-run double in a five-run ninth inning and Toronto beat Chicago.

Luke Maile had an RBI double and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. added an RBI single in the inning before Gurriel exited with knee and ankle injuries. Teoscar Hernandez homered to tie the game earlier in the ninth for the Blue Jays, who won two of three against the White Sox.

Hernandez's homer to lead off the inning was his 16th of the season.

Gurriel extended his Toronto record of consecutive multihit games to 11 with his RBI single in the eighth that cut the lead to 3-2. The 24-year-old has batted .500 (25 for 50) during the streak, which ties Tony Perez in 1973 for the longest in the last 50 years in the majors.

Luis Santos (1-1) allowed a run in two innings for the win. Jace Fry (0-2) allowed three runs without recording an out.

                    MARLINS 5, NATIONALS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Jose Urena and three relievers combined on a two-hitter for Miami in a win over Washington to split a four-game series.

Urena (3-10) threw six scoreless innings allowing only one hit. Adam Conley, Brad Ziegler, and Drew Steckenrider each pitched an inning in relief for the Marlins.

Miami was outscored 19-4 losing the first two games before limiting the Nationals to one run on seven hits in the final two games.

Jeremy Hellickson (4-2) allowed five runs, three earned, and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

                    MARINERS 8, ANGELS 5

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mike Zunino had a two-run double in a seven-run first inning and Marco Gonzales (12-5) went six strong innings to help Seattle beat Los Angeles.

Zunino drove in three runs, also delivering an RBI double in the third inning, as the Mariners salvaged the final game of the three-game series. Dee Gordon, Denard Span and Ben Gamel had three hits each for the Mariners.

Justin Upton hit a two-run home run for the Angels in the fifth inning, his 21st of the season, and added an RBI single in the seventh. Los Angeles saw its four-game win streak come to an end.

Angels starter Felix Pena (1-2) faced nine batters and recorded just one out.

                    DIAMONDBACKS 5, PADRES 4

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Paul Goldschmidt and Nick Ahmed each hit a two-run homer and A.J. Pollock also connected for Arizona, which held on to beat San Diego for a three-game sweep.

Clay Buchholz (4-1) almost got through the sixth as he won his third straight start. Brad Boxberger, who was with San Diego in 2012-13, pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save in 30 chances.

The Padres lost their fifth straight game and dropped to 2-7 since the All-Star break. They've lost 12 of 14 overall.

All three Diamondbacks homers came off rookie lefty Joey Lucchesi (5-6).

Atlanta pitcher Sean Newcomb will face the fallout from his tweets, a day after he apologized for racist, homophobic and sexist posts he put on social media as a teenager.

The 25-year-old came within one strike of a no-hitter Sunday at SunTrust Park against the Dodgers. Less than an hour later, after the old tweets came to light, he said he regretted his actions. Major League Baseball, which dealt with a similar situation involving Milwaukee reliever Josh Hader on the night he pitched in the All-Star Game, said it will determine a course of diversity training for Newcomb.

The Braves are home to open a series against Miami.

                        GROUNDED

The World Series champion Astros have lost a season-high four in a row, getting swept for the first time this year when Texas took three straight at Minute Maid Park over the weekend. Houston also is minus its star middle infielders - second baseman Jose Altuve has a sore knee and is on the disabled list for the first time in his career and shortstop Carlos Correa has a back problem.

Leading the AL West by four games over the Mariners, the Astros begin a three-game series at Seattle with Gerrit Cole (10-2) pitching against James Paxton (8-4).

                        WHO'S NEXT?

More deals could come as teams approach the Tuesday afternoon deadline for making trades without waivers. The Braves added an arm for their bullpen on Sunday, getting right-hander Brad Brach from Baltimore for $250,000 of international signing bonus allotment. Brach was the latest Orioles player to get traded after star third baseman Manny Machado went to the Dodgers and relief ace Zach Britton was sent to the Yankees.

                        FIRST THIRST

A pair of division leaders meet at Fenway Park when All-Star Aaron Nola (12-3) and Phillies visit David Price (11-6) and the Red Sox to start a two-game series. Philadelphia tops the NL East despite losing three in a row for the first time in more than a month. Boston owns the best record in the majors, winning 18 of its last 22 to stay atop the AL East.

                        CHECK THEM

The Giants will see how Andrew McCutchen and Pablo Sandoval are feeling after they got jarred in a win over Milwaukee.

Sandoval ran out his first triple in more than three years, but strained his right hamstring diving home and is set for an MRI. McCutchen was pulled for a pinch-hitter after fouling multiple pitches off his left foot. The team also is waiting test results after Johnny Cueto met with doctors regarding his sore elbow - he's winless in four starts since coming off a two-month stay on the disabled list.

                            1) Browns $69,082,093

                            6) Bears $26,127,980

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

                            13) Red Sox are 40 games over .500 in July, just 5th team since 1969 to do that. Here are the other four:

                            1969 Orioles— 41 games over .500
                            1970 Reds- 40 games over .500
                            2001 Mariners— 47 games over .500
                            2017 Dodgers— 43 games over .500

Good news for the Red Sox; three of those teams got to the World Series that year.
Bad news for the Red Sox; none of those teams won the World Series that year.

                            12) Why haven’t the Jets signed Sam Darnold yet? Quit nitpicking over contract details; he’s your franchise QB moving forward— get him in camp.

                            11) Not only did Angels’ rookie catcher Francisco Arcia knock in 10 runs in his first two major league games, which is an all-time major league record, it came after he played 12 years in the minor leagues.

                            10) According to RJ Bell, when the Royals won in the Bronx Saturday afternoon, it was the biggest baseball upset since Tampa Bay upset Pedro Martinez and the Red Sox (-$460) back in September, 2004.

                            9) If you follow college basketball, you probably know who Seth Davis is; he appears on the CBS college basketball studio show, writes for The Athletic, used to write for Sports Illustrated.

Davis’ father has been in the news a lot lately; he is Lanny Davis, one of Michael Cohen’s lawyers.

                            8) Mets are paying injured 3B David Wright $20M this year, then $15M next year and $12M in 2020, but they recoup 75% of that money from an insurance policy. Too bad they don’t re-invest the $15M they saved this year.

                            7) Duquesne’s basketball team brought in seven new players for this season, all of whom have a wingspan of 7+ feet. One kid has a wingspan of 7-7.5. Will they play more zone, with all those long arms ready to deflect passes?

                            6) Why did the Cubs trade for Cole Hamels? Tyler Chatwood has 11 starts this year with 5+ walks; no one else in the major leagues has more than six. Thats why.

                            5) Cincinnati Reds are 28-21 since June 1; problem is, they were 20-37 before June 1.

                            4) When Matt Carpenter homered in six straight games earlier this month, he didn’t hit any singles in those games; he is the first player since Travis Hafner (in 2005) to do that.

                            3) For some reason, ESPN decided to rank the last 20 college football national champs, and they came up with the 2002 Ohio State team as the worst of the 20 champs, all of which annoyed a lot of people in the Buckeye State.

                            2) Baseball strategy: Mets led Pittsburgh 1-0 in top of 7th Sunday; they had men on 2nd, 3rd with two out and pitcher Zack Wheeler was due up- he is pitching a shutout and has thrown only 89 pitches. Do you pinch-hit or not?

Mets send Conforto up to pinch-hit; the Pirates walk him intentionally, loading the bases, and then they get Rosario out to end the inning, so not only is Wheeler out of the game, you’ve wasted your best pinch-hitter.

This isn’t a clear-cut decision; they probably figured they were only getting one more inning out of Wheeler no matter what, so they should go for the runs. Decisions like this are one of the big differences between managing in the American and National Leagues.

Mets won 1-0; from Mark Simon “Wheeler becomes first Mets pitcher with only RBI in a 1-0 win since Nino Espinosa in 1977 against the Phillies”

                            1) Braves 4, Dodgers 1— Lefty Sean Newcomb was masterful for Atlanta, no-hitting the Dodgers for 8.2 innings, before Chris Taylor singled with two out in the 9th.

He threw 117 pitches in first eight innings, 134 for the game, most of any pitcher in the major leagues this season. He had never thrown more than 111 as a pro. Will be interesting to track him going forward.

Newcomb was 1-3, 7.00 in his previous four starts. Go figure.
