    • Thursday's Diamond Notes
      April 19, 2018

Hottest team: Red Sox (6-0 last six)

Boston isn’t slowing down anytime soon as the Red Sox picked up another dominating victory over the Angels. On Wednesday, one night after blowing out the Halos, 10-1 in the series opener, the Red Sox blanked L.A., 9-0 behind Rick Porcello’s six scoreless innings. Outfielder J.D. Martinez delivered four hits for Boston, including his fourth home run on the season as the Red Sox have plated 84 runs in the last 10 games (9-1).

The Red Sox look to secure the sweep with left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez on the hill tonight. Rodriguez limited the Orioles to five hits and one earned run in six innings of work in a 7-3 home victory last Friday. However, the southpaw has struggled on the road as Boston posted a 1-6 record in his seven starts away from Fenway Park since last June (making first away start this season).

Coldest team: Orioles (0-5 last five)

It’s been a disastrous start for Baltimore, who attempts to avoid a sweep for the second straight road series. The Orioles dropped all three games at Boston last weekend and have fallen twice at Detroit the last two days. The Tigers walked-off past the O’s on Wednesday, 6-5, as Baltimore dropped to 1-7 since taking three of four from the Yankees in New York earlier this month.

Alex Cobb tries to stop the bleeding for Baltimore this afternoon as the former Rays’ right-hander was tagged for 10 hits and eight runs in his Orioles’ debut at Boston. The O’s face Jordan Zimmermann in the series finale, as Baltimore has compiled a 1-4 record this season against right-handed starting pitchers.

Hottest pitcher: Jameson Taillon, Pirates (2-0, 0.89 ERA)

Pittsburgh avoided a home sweep to Colorado in Wednesday’s blowout of the Rockies. The Pirates make the short trip across the state to begin a four-game series with the Phillies. Taillon is coming off consecutive scoreless outings against the Reds and Marlins, while scattering five hits in 15 innings of work. Pittsburgh owns a perfect 3-0 record in Taillon’s three starts this season, while the Pirates look to improve on a 7-2 mark away from PNC Park.

Coldest pitcher: Matt Harvey, Mets (0-1, 4.80 ERA)

New York has yet to lose a road game this season as the Mets embark on a four-game series with the surprising Braves. The Mets rallied past the Nationals on Wednesday to end a two-game slide, as Harvey tries to cure his recent ills on the mound. Harvey dominated the Phillies in his first start of the season, but the Mets’ righty has given up four earned runs in each of his past two starts, while not lasting past the fifth inning. New York lost each of Harvey’s last three starts against Atlanta last season, including a pair of outings at SunTrust Park.

Biggest OVER run: Marlins (4-1 on road, 3-0 last three)

Miami pulled off a shocking victory at New York on Tuesday by routing the Yankees, 9-1, one night after getting blown out by the Bronx Bombers, 12-1. The Marlins have been an inconsistent team when it comes to totals as their current three-game OVER streak is their longest this season. Miami travels to Milwaukee for the start of a four-game series with the Brewers, as Dillon Peters heads to the mound. Peters has been the model of inconsistency for Miami, by tossing a pair of quality starts as home underdogs in wins over the Cubs and Pirates, but was lit up in a 20-1 road loss at Philadelphia.

Biggest UNDER run: Astros (10-3 last 13)

Houston’s pitching staff is largely responsible for registering a majority of these UNDERS, as the Astros have limited the Mariners to four runs through the first three games in Seattle. Although Wednesday’s contest barely hit the OVER on a 7 ½ total, the Astros’ offense finally busted out by scoring seven runs. Thirteen times this season the Astros have limited opponents to three runs or fewer as Charlie Morton looks to continue that trend this afternoon. Morton has allowed three earned runs in his 18 innings of work this season, while hitting the UNDER in eight of his last 10 starts since August 2017.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Diamondbacks

Arizona and San Francisco wrap up their three-game set at Chase Field after the Giants grabbed a 4-3 victory in 10 innings on Wednesday. The D-backs erased a late 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the ninth, but the Giants plated a pair of runs in the top of the 10th to end a four-game slide.

The D-backs have yet to lose consecutive games this season as they look to finish off the Giants with ace Zack Greinke taking the ball. Greinke has been knocked around in his last two outings at St. Louis and Los Angeles by allowing nine earned runs in 11 innings of work. The D-backs captured all three of Greinke’s starts against the Giants last season, including tossing eight scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory last September.

Ty Blach counters for San Francisco, as the southpaw has already faced Dodgers’ ace Clayton Kershaw twice and split a pair of low-scoring starts against Los Angeles. The Giants haven’t provided Blach much run support, scoring one run in three of his starts, while putting up four runs in a home loss to the Mariners.

Betcha didn’t know: It seems like the Cubs haven’t played in a long time with all the terrible weather wiping games throughout baseball. Chicago finishes off its series with St. Louis at Wrigley Field as Jon Lester takes the mound. The Cubs are 4-0 in the left-hander’s last four home outings against the Cardinals since 2016, but St. Louis is currently riding a six-game road winning streak.

Biggest public favorite: Brewers (-190) vs. Marlins

Biggest public underdog: Pirates (+100) at Phillies

Biggest line move: Tigers (+115 to +105) vs. Orioles

      • Reds fire manager Bryan Price after 3-15 start
        April 19, 2018

CINCINNATI (AP) The Reds fired Bryan Price on Thursday after their 3-15 start, the first managerial change in the major leagues this season.

Price was in his fifth season leading the rebuilding team, which has relied on rookies more than any other team in the majors during his tenure. The Reds have lost at least 94 games in each of the last three seasons while finishing last in the NL Central.

Bench coach Jim Riggleman will manage the team on an interim basis. The move came during an off-day in St. Louis. The Reds are coming off back-to-back shutout losses in Milwaukee, the first time they were blanked in consecutive games since 2015.

Price was given the job of leading the Reds during a massive overhaul. They were 279-387 under Price, who got the job when Dusty Baker was fired after the 2013 season for failing to get beyond the first round of the playoffs.

The Reds suffered significant injuries during spring training and got off to their worst start since the Great Depression while drawing small crowds at Great American Ball Park. Top starter Anthony DeSclafani is sidelined indefinitely with a strained oblique - he missed all last season with an elbow injury - and left-hander Brandon Finnegan has been limited to one start by a biceps injury.

The offense also has taken significant hits. Third baseman Eugenio Suarez got a $66 million, seven-year contract during spring training - Cincinnati's first significant deal during its rebuild - but he broke his right thumb when he was hit by a pitch and is sidelined indefinitely. Right fielder Scott Schebler also is out with a bruised elbow.

The Reds won the division twice during Baker's six-year tenure and went to the playoffs three times, but couldn't get beyond the first round. Baker was fired after they lost the wild card game to Pittsburgh in 2013, and Price was promoted from pitching coach.

The Reds lost 86 games in Price's first season, and the organization decided to begin a massive rebuild that involved trading every star player except Joey Votto and Homer Bailey. They've brought up rookie pitchers before they were ready to fill in while DeSclafani, Finnegan and Bailey were hurt.

Thirty-two Reds players have made their major league debuts in the last three seasons, the most in the majors. In the last four seasons, they've had a rookie start 254 of 504 games. Rookies made a club-record 110 starts in 2015, when the Reds lost 98 games.

            BREWERS 12, MARLINS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Lorenzo Cain homered, doubled twice and scored four times, and pinch-hitter Ryan Braun launched a three-run homer that gave him 1,000 RBIs. The Brewers erased a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning and added seven in the sixth.

Slumping Lewis Brinson, acquired from Milwaukee in the offseason trade for Christian Yelich, celebrated his return to Miller Park with his first two homers of the season for Miami.

Chase Anderson (2-1) allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings for the win. Dillon Peters (2-2) gave up four runs, three hits, five walks and a pair of wilc pitches in 4 2/3 innings.

            DIAMONDBACKS 3, GIANTS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Zack Greinke (2-1) allowed one run and three hits in seven innings, giving up a solo homer to Brandon Belt, and Arizona won its sixth straight series.

Brad Boxberger got Belt to pop out with two on in the ninth inning for his fifth straight save to open the season, a night after allowing the go-ahead homer to Belt in the 10th.

A.J. Pollock hit a solo homer off Ty Blach (1-3) and Ketel Marte also had a solo shot to help the Diamondbacks take two of three from the Giants. Arizona had never opened a season with more than two straight series wins.

            • Diamondbacks' Owings injured in collision with Pollock
              April 19, 2018

PHOENIX (AP) Arizona right fielder Chris Owings has left the Diamondbacks' game against the San Francisco Giants after colliding with center fielder A.J. Pollock.

Owings was injured in the third inning Thursday night on a long fly to the gap in right-center by Joe Panik.

Owings slid to make the catch and appeared to get hit on the head by Pollock's knee. An athletic trainer ran out to attend to Owings, who walked slowly back to the dugout to applause from the home fans.

He was replaced by Jarrod Dyson.

Owings has played multiple positions during six seasons with the Diamondbacks. He is hitting .275 with a homer and six RBIs this year.

Home plate ump Jerry Layne injured by Mike Trout foul ball
              April 19, 2018

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Home plate umpire Jerry Layne has left the Los Angeles Angels' game against Boston after a foul ball from Mike Trout hit him on the right arm.

Layne went to the locker room in the bottom of the first inning Thursday night.

Trout's foul off the second pitch from Eduardo Rodriguez went straight back and smacked Layne on his right elbow or biceps. Layne doubled over in obvious pain while trainers attended to him, and he eventually exited through the Angels' dugout.

Rodriguez threw several dozen warmup pitches during the lengthy delay.

The game resumed with first base umpire Greg Gibson behind the plate after he fetched his gear.

The 59-year-old Layne has been a major league umpire since 1989.

              Backing the Blue Jays
              April 19, 2018

What The Toronto Blue Jays Are Doing Right

Lost in the shuffle of the Maple Leafs challenging for the Stanley Cup and the Raptors attempting to prevent another playoff implosion is the Toronto Blue Jays clawing their way to a handsome record of 12-5 SU and a +588 rating on the moneyline.

They currently own the third best record in the entire American League. For a team that was nothing more than an afterthought at the beginning of the season, this is a big deal.

Spring wins are a huge buffer for teams like the Blue Jays, who are pretty much overachieving at this point. Toronto began the MLB betting season as +5000 longshots to win the World Series. If you know anything about the futures market in general, you know that this number means that they’re not in the running.

That mark has changed dramatically over the course of the month. Toronto is now a +2500 outsider to challenge for the World Series, and are +1000 to win in the American League pennant futures.

You’re probably not going to wager on the Jays to maintain this momentum all the way through to October, especially since the Angels and Red Sox are much more fun bets.

              2018 American League Pennant Odds

              Houston Astros +300
              Boston Red Sox +400
              New York Yankees +450
              Los Angeles Angels +500
              Minnesota Twins +1000
              Toronto Blue Jays +1000
              Seattle Mariners +2500

What Toronto more so represents is a cautionary bull market. They’re off to their best start in a decade, and don’t remind fans of that because they ended up finishing fourth in the division and six games under .500 in 2009. It’s much better than the 2-11 start they endured last year at this point, but it’s also come in part because of a soft schedule.

Toronto has happily beat up the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles and swept the Kansas City Royals over their last ten games along with a one-game beat down of the Cleveland Indians.

By every understanding of what we know about baseball, the ship should correct with a four game set coming up against the New York Yankees through the weekend.

That is followed by a tide turning series against the surging Boston Red Sox, who have been smashing their way through victories at an obscene clip.

It goes without saying that the Blue Jays are an inflated commodity that’s full of hot air right now. Their pitching is abysmal, and they remain without their two biggest stars as Josh Donaldson’s trip to the disabled list is going to last a little longer and Troy Tulowitzki is still recovering from double foot surgery.

With those two back in the lineup sooner rather than later, this Toronto team is a lot easier to believe in and bet on. Without them it’s easy to see this hot air balloon ride crashing back down to Earth.

Teams that lack truly consistent pitching are a problem for bettors because everything about betting on baseball relies on starting pitchers. J.A. Happ leads the team with three wins in four starts, and that in itself speaks volumes about what these guys have at the stripe. It’s not safe.

All this being said, there are a lot of teams giving up a lot of runs this year in spite of having elite staffs. Maybe the balls are juiced (read: the balls are juiced), or maybe teams like the Blue Jays have found a bit of a loophole in traditional baseball metrics.

Team defense, strong pitching and intense strategy is what really makes a difference in the playoffs. You can’t rely on big home runs all the time – you have to be the best at something.

The Blue Jays are simply good at power hitting. That isn’t enough to win a World Series, or even a pennant, on its own merits but it’s more than enough to generate runs in the regular season.

Toronto ranks 5th with a .776 OPS and are 3rd in terms of slugging with an out-of-infield rate of .444 which is fantastic. They don’t hit an exceptional amount of balls in to play, and aside from the impossibly athletic Kevin Pillar they’re hilariously slow and terrible at stealing bases.

It’s actually mind boggling that this is working to Toronto’s favor.

The only thing that saves Toronto is literally their slugging. Everything else is average or just slightly above. And even there, they don’t hit a lot of doubles or triples. But the consistency at which they bat balls out of the infield and in to play gives them tons of chances to score. They make the most of what the skin they scalp, and strong slugging teams can survive world eating pitchers or opponents who are equally good at circling back to home plate.

In most instances with teams like Toronto, you’d say “bet now and get out when the ship starts thinking”. That’s the whole Hot Hand mentality.

However, Toronto has a fantastic schedule coming up that is only muddied by a showdown with Boston next week. They play the Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Twins, Indians and Rays up until the first weekend of May. That’s some good eating if you ask me.

Everyone is going to tell you to back off, which is fine. But knowing that the regular season is about simplicity, and that starting pitching is mattering less and less when it comes to betting (because the balls are juiced!), Toronto still stands as a strong play.

The Yankees are very vulnerable right now. The rest of the American League isn’t that good.

Somehow Toronto has emerged as a team that can survive their own weaknesses because their one strength is entirely useful at producing runs. That’s enough for me to keep betting on their moneylines. You should too until there’s solid proof that they’re no longer viable. For now, it’s safe to fly with these Blue Jays.

Friday’s List of 13: Quick thoughts on the 2018 NFL schedule

Thoughts/comments on the NFL schedule release:
                  13) Week 1 Monday night doubleheader: Jets @ Lions, then Rams @ Raiders.

Super Bowl champion Eagles open on Thursday Sept 6 at home against Atlanta.

                  12) NFL went traditional rival-heavy for its Thanksgiving Day slate: Chicago-Detroit; Washington-Dallas; Atlanta-New Orleans. Good set of games.

This is third year in row the Redskins play on Thanksgiving Day.

                  11) Only four divisional games in Week 1, which is a good idea. Every game in Week 17 is a divisional game.

                  10) There is a Week 16 Monday night game on Christmas Eve; Broncos @ Raiders.

                  9) A sign the NFL doesn’t think you’re good: Miami Dolphins have a Week 8 Thursday night game in Houston- their other 15 games appear to be 1:00 Sunday games. If you NEVER play a 4:25 Sunday game, the league office isn’t too optimistic about your chances.

                  8) Rams-Chiefs in Mexico City on Monday night, November 19. Bye week the next week for both teams, which is weird but good for the team, having a bye week over Thanksgiving.

                  7) Chargers visit Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Denver in December, three potential cold weather games. Rams go to Chicago December 9, which will probably be a cruddy weather day.

                  6) Three teams have the unenviable “3 road games in 3 weeks” scenario:
                  — Ravens go to Pittsburgh-Cleveland-Tennessee in weeks 4-6
                  — Rams go to Seattle-Denver-San Francisco in weeks 5-7
                  — Saints go to Dallas-Tampa Bay-Carolina in weeks 13-15, but the Week 13 game is a Thursday game so they’ll have extra rest in there before the Bucs’ game.

11 teams have three home games in a row.

                  5) For first time since 2009, Bears open the season at Lambeau Field against the Packers, in the Week 1 Sunday night game.

                  4) Giants play four road games in domes, which at first glance is most in the league.

                  3) Speaking of domes, Lions/Saints both play three road games in domes, giving them only five outdoor games apiece this season.

                  2) In next few days, Las Vegas oddsmakers will have spreads for every game thru Week 16. Season over/under win totals don’t come out until after next week’s draft.

                  1) Here are the Week 1 NFL spreads from the Westgate SuperBook:

                  Falcons @ Philadelphia (-3.5, 47.5)
                  Steelers (-7, 48) @ Cleveland
                  49ers @ Minnesota (-4.5, 47.5)
                  Bengals @ Indianapolis (-1, 47.5)
                  Bills @ Ravens (-3.5, 42)
                  Jaguars (-4, 44.5) @ Giants
                  Buccaneers @ New Orleans (-7.5, 52.5)
                  Texans @ New England (-7, 51)
                  Titans (-2.5, 47) @ Miami
                  Chiefs @ LA Chargers (-3, 48.5)
                  Seahawks @ Denver (-2.5, 42)
                  Cowboys @ Carolina (-2.5, 45)
                  Redskins @ Arizona (-1, 45)
                  Bears @ Green Bay (-9, 48.5)
                  Jets @ Detroit (-6, 44)
                  Rams (even, 49.5) @ Oakland

                          • LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs Kershaw; Riggleman takes over
                            April 19, 2018

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                            CY VS. CY

The marquee pitching matchup of the young season takes place in Los Angeles, where Nationals ace Max Scherzer faces Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. It will be the 13th time in history, 10th in the regular season and first since 2006, with two three-time Cy Young Award winners on the mound. Seven of the past eight involved Roger Clemens, whose Houston Astros beat Greg Maddux and the Chicago Cubs on July 19, 2006, in the most recent such game. Scherzer won the AL Cy Young Award in 2013 with Detroit and picked up his next two in 2016 and 2017 with Washington. Kershaw won the NL prize in 2011, 2013 and 2014. This season, Kershaw is 1-2 with a 1.73 ERA in four starts. Scherzer is 3-1 with a 1.33 ERA, also in four starts.

                            HE KNOWS THE DRILL

The Reds play their first game with Jim Riggleman as interim manager, a situation Riggleman is familiar with. This is the fourth time in his career he's been promoted during a season. Cincinnati fired manager Bryan Price after its worst start (3-15) since the Great Depression. Riggleman got his first major league managing job with the Padres late in the 1992 season after leading San Diego's Triple-A club for most of the year. He was promoted from bench coach to manager by Seattle in 2008 and again by Washington in 2009. He stuck with the Nationals through the middle of the 2011 season, when he abruptly resigned. The 65-year-old Riggleman is 662-824 in his career. He's expected to be a candidate for the full-time job with the Reds, and for now, he said his focus will be ''to really put an exclamation point on the details of the game.''

                            STILL ROLLING

Astros ace Justin Verlander looks for his 10th consecutive regular-season win when Houston visits the struggling Chicago White Sox (4-11), who have lost four straight and nine of 10. Verlander is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in four starts this year and has 34 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings. He fanned 11 over eight innings of one-hit ball Sunday night against Texas during a memorable duel with 44-year-old Bartolo Colon, who took a perfect game into the eighth.

                            PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

The Yankees entered Thursday tied for the AL lead with 17 errors, and manager Aaron Boone says ''that needs to improve.'' With that in mind, New York is planning a defensive practice session prior to a game against Toronto. Just in time, too, after third baseman Ronald Torreyes' error Thursday led to a Blue Jays run, as did the first of catcher Gary Sanchez's two passed balls. ''I'm confident we'll continue to improve,'' Boone said.

                            WRIGLEY EAST

The Tigers continue their run of day games at Comerica Park with the opener of a doubleheader against Kansas City. Detroit has five consecutive days of home games starting at 1:10 p.m., another schedule quirk in this weather-interrupted month around the majors. The Tigers' game against Baltimore on Wednesday was moved from evening to afternoon in anticipation of bad weather later in the day. Friday's opener of a three-day, four-game set against the Royals is a makeup of a game that was postponed on April 4. Detroit also had two home games against the Yankees postponed last weekend.

Hottest team: Red Sox (7-0 last seven)

Boston completed a three-game sweep of Los Angeles on Thursday, as the Angels entered that pivotal series on a seven-game winning streak. The Red Sox outscored the Halos, 27-3 as outfielder Mookie Betts continued his hot series by knocking out his sixth home run of the season in the finale. Boston has won 16 of its past 17 games since blowing a 4-0 lead in the season opening loss at Tampa Bay.

The Red Sox remain in California to begin a weekend series with the Athletics, who have won their previous four games. Southpaw Drew Pomeranz makes his season debut after taking the mound twice in a pair of minor league rehab starts. Pomeranz closed 2017 with a career-high 17 victories for Boston, but the Red Sox lost five of his seven starts in the role of a road favorite.

Coldest team: White Sox (1-9 last 10)

Chicago actually started the season at 2-0, but the Pale Hose have won two games since and lost 11 times. The most bitter defeat came on Wednesday at Oakland as the White Sox squandered a five-run lead twice and lost in 14 innings, 12-11 to suffer the three-game sweep. The Athletics plated 30 runs in the three wins, as things don’t get any easier this weekend with the defending champion Astros visiting the South Side.

The White Sox have been horrific at home so far by losing five of six games at Guaranteed Rate Field. To make matter worse, it hasn’t come against great competition by dropping three to the Tigers and two to the Rays, but Chicago pulled off a three-game home sweep of Houston last season.

Hottest pitcher: Noah Syndergaard, Mets (2-0, 2.95 ERA)

New York looks to rebound after suffering its first road loss of the season in the series opener at Atlanta, 12-4. Syndergaard ranks third in the National League in strikeouts with 33, while coming off an 11-strikeout performance in last Sunday’s 3-2 victory over the Brewers. The Mets own a perfect 4-0 record in his four starts this season, even though New York has scored over four runs once in that span. In Syndergaard’s only start against the Braves last season, the right-hander tossed six scoreless innings in a 6-0 shutout at Citi Field.

Coldest pitcher: Kendall Graveman, Athletics (0-3, 9.87 ERA)

It will be a tall task for Graveman to slow down the Boston bats, who scored 27 runs in its three-game sweep of the Angels. The Oakland right-hander has allowed five earned runs in three different starts and four earned runs in another outing. Last season, Graveman pitched well against the Red Sox in a 3-2 home win as a +170 underdog by tossing six innings, while Oakland’s lone victory with the righty on the hill this season came as a home ‘dog against the Angels.

Biggest OVER run: Padres (5-0 last five)

San Diego hits the road after getting swept at home by Los Angeles in a three-game set. The Padres gave up 30 runs to the Dodgers, which is in sharp contrast to yielding 13 runs in a four-game series to the Giants last weekend. San Diego heads to Arizona to face the division-leading Diamondbacks, as Tyson Ross heads to the hill. Ross has been solid in two home starts by giving up four runs in wins over Colorado and San Francisco, but was tagged for four runs in his lone road start at Houston.

Biggest UNDER run: Indians (9-2 last 11)

Cleveland’s pitching allowed three runs in a two-game split against Minnesota in Puerto Rico. Although the Indians lost in 16 innings on Wednesday, the Twins didn’t score their first run until the 14th inning. In eight of the last 10 games, the Tribe’s hurlers have allowed two runs or less, as Cleveland looks to keep that streak going with a trip to struggling Baltimore. Trevor Bauer takes the mound in the opener, as the right-hander has yielded two earned runs or less in all three starts this season, although the UNDER has hit just once in those outings.

Matchup to watch: Nationals vs. Dodgers

Both Washington and Los Angeles are perennial division winners and playoff veterans in the National League. However, these squads enter this weekend series at Chavez Ravine with below .500 record as the Nationals (9-10) face a Dodgers’ club that has won four straight games (8-9).

Los Angeles found itself in a 4-9 hole and significantly behind red-hot Arizona before capturing the final game of its series last weekend. The Dodgers cruised past the Padres in a three-game road sweep, as the offense finally broke out with a 30-run performance. Clayton Kershaw heads to the mound in the series opener against the Nationals, as the former Cy Young winner lost his first two starts to the Giants and D-backs before Los Angeles defeated those two opponents in his next two outings.

The Nationals have performed better on the road (6-3) than at home this season (3-7), as Washington grabbed two of three at New York. Max Scherzer has put together three dominant performances on the mound in four starts this season for Washington, while striking out 21 batters and allowing three hits in his last two outings.

The Dodgers and Nationals split six matchups last season, with the road team winning two of three games each time. Kershaw and Scherzer each picked up 2-1 victories in a June series at Dodger Stadium, while squaring off against each other for the first time since Game 1 of the 2016 NLDS, won by the Dodgers, 4-3.

Betcha didn’t know: The Reds have been awful (betcha you did know that). Cincinnati fired managed Bryan Price following a 3-15 start, which included a four-game home-sweep at the hands of St. Louis. The Cardinals host the Reds at Busch Stadium, after losing to the Cubs on Thursday. St. Louis has captured nine of the past 10 meetings with Cincinnati since last season, as Michael Wacha heads to the mound for the Redbirds looking to beat the Reds for the third time since 2017.

Biggest public favorite: Cardinals (-185) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog: Cubs (+100) at Rockies

Biggest line move: Padres (+135 to +118) at Diamondbacks
