  • Twins SS Polanco suspended 80 games
    March 18, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Minnesota Twins shortstop Jorge Polanco has been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance, a big blow to a team that has made a series of roster-enhancing moves throughout the offseason and into spring training.

The commissioner's office announced Sunday that Polanco tested positive for Stanozolol, becoming the sixth player to be banned this year under the major league drug program. That's already one more than last season.

Polanco started 127 games at shortstop last year for the Twins, finishing with a .256 batting average, 13 home runs, 13 stolen bases and 74 RBIs in his first full season as a regular in the lineup. His grandfather died in June, and the switch-hitting 24-year-old struggled through the early part of the summer until being benched temporarily in late June.

From Aug. 1 through the rest of the season, though, he hit .316 with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs over his last 55 games while taking over the No. 3 spot in the batting order and helping the Twins reach the AL wild-card game.

Without Polanco, the Twins will turn to Eduardo Escobar, who has played more shortstop for the team than anyone since 2014. Their signing of 12-year veteran Erick Aybar to a minor league contract last month could also pay off, with another experienced option for the middle infield while Polanco is out.

The Twins issued a statement expressing disappointment with the news and support of Major League Baseball's drug prevention and treatment program. They said the organization would have no further comment.

Polanco, in a statement released by the players' union, said he didn't realize he'd taken a banned substance.

''I now know, however, that my intention alone is not a good enough excuse and I will pay the price for my error in judgment,'' Polanco said. ''The substance that I requested from my athletic trainer in the Dominican Republic and consented to take was a combination of vitamin B12 and an iron supplement, something that is not unusual or illegal for professional athletes to take. Unfortunately, what I was given was not that supplement and I take full responsibility for what is in my body.''

Polanco said ''every bone in my body wants to appeal this suspension,'' but out of respect for Twins officials, coaches and teammates he decided to withdraw his request for an appeal and begin serving the suspension from the start of the regular season.

''My hope is that through this extremely disappointing situation other players will learn from my mistake,'' Polanco said. ''I hope that those who have believed in me, those within the Twins organization, my teammates, and the fans in Minnesota and in the Dominican Republic will accept my sincere apology. I will continue to train hard every day in the hopes of being able to contribute to winning baseball games with the Twins later this year.''

Twins starting pitcher Ervin Santana, also a native of the Dominican Republic, received an 80-game suspension for Stanozolol in 2015.

Fowler's back at leadoff for Cardinals
    March 18, 2018

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) When considering where to slot Dexter Fowler in the batting order, St. Louis manager Mike Matheny isn't concerned about last year.

    There's additional data to consider.

''He's got a pretty good track record of being successful at the top of the order,'' Matheny said. ''You don't take any small sample and put that in concrete. He's done a nice job over the course of his career of getting on base and making things happen at the top.''

A career .268 hitter, Fowler batted just .205 in 51 games last season as the Cardinals' leadoff man. That came after hitting .277 from the leadoff spot for the World Series-winning Chicago Cubs the previous year.

That performance, the allure of a disruptive force on the basepaths and a good glove in center field prompted the Cardinals to sign Fowler to a five-year, $82.5 million contract prior to the 2017 season.

With Fowler and the offense struggling as a whole last season, Matheny juggled the lineup. Not primarily known as a run producer, Fowler hit .333 and had 15 RBIs in 18 games as the Cardinals' cleanup hitter. In 22 games at the third spot, Fowler hit .271.

Last year Fowler hit from every slot in the lineup except seventh and eighth - he had five hits in nine at-bats hitting ninth spot. At every slot other than leadoff, his average exceeded his career batting average.

''I felt like I was hitting leadoff even when I was hitting third or fourth,'' Fowler said. ''I took ABs like I was hitting leadoff.''

Including Matt Carpenter and Kolten Wong, the St. Louis lineup will feature three experienced leadoff hitters. Matheny, however, believes putting Fowler and his career .366 on-base percentage in the top spot gives the Cardinals the best chance to produce early runs.

Tommy Pham, who hit .306 with a .411 on-base percentage during last year's breakout season, will follow Fowler, with Carpenter, an on-base machine, hitting third.

''Our potential one through three, you're talking about three guys that could go over .370 or more in on-base percentage,'' Carpenter said. ''There's going to be a lot of guys on base.''

And ready to clean up those base runners waits new acquisition Marcell Ozuna, fresh off a 37-homer, 124-RBI season.

''Having people on base, it just changes things for you as a hitter,'' Carpenter said. ''When you're struggling or you're not getting off to a great start I know when you have somebody standing out there there's something it just does for you.''

Fowler's spring isn't as productive as he'd hoped. His double in the sixth inning of Sunday's 10-0 victory over Washington, the highlight of a 1-for-3 day, raised Fowler's Grapefruit League average to .235.

While Fowler is returning to a familiar spot in the batting order, he's moving to a new one defensively.

Pham's emergence as an every day player last season prompted Fowler's move from center to right field this year. With Ozuna in left, the Cardinals will start three outfielders with center field experience.

Fowler doesn't see much difference between center field and right, except maybe less potential for chaos on any given play.

''You don't have to worry about the guys on each side of you,'' Fowler said. ''There's only a guy on one side, so it's less to worry about.''

Lucroy getting to know new A's teammates
    March 18, 2018

MESA, Ariz. (AP) Jonathan Lucroy's first spring training game in an Oakland Athletics' uniform didn't stand out in the box score. He went 0 for 2 on two groundouts against a Seattle Mariners split squad.

Being on a new team, there also was the occasional confusion with a different set of signs. But a closer look at Lucroy's six innings behind the plate Saturday revealed something the A's will be counting on this season - the veteran catcher's presence.

''It's awesome. He's very well prepared and he definitely takes charge,'' said Sean Manaea, who started for the A's. ''He definitely controls the entire diamond. Having a guy like that, especially with the amount of time and the amount of knowledge that he has is huge.''

Lucroy, signed to a one-year, $6.5 million contract on Monday, is set to take over as the starting catcher for Oakland despite not signing until well into spring training. If his past is any indication, the offensive numbers will also be there.

The 31-year-old two-time All-Star batted .265 with six home runs and 40 RBIs in 123 games last season for Texas and Colorado. He hit .310 in 46 with the Rockies as they made a run to the National League wild-card game.

Lucroy was among the late free-agent signees in baseball this year, and it might seems like a crash course to be ready to guide the A's young pitching staff into the fast-approaching season while individually getting at-bats. But Lucroy says he will be ready.

''I've been traded twice in the middle of a season, I'm not worried about that,'' he said. ''I've got way more time than I had then. I need to see more at-bats out here. I'll be ready when the time comes.''

Lucroy hit .292 in what was an All-Star campaign for him in 2016, with 24 home runs and 81 runs batted in. His numbers dipped last season, but the cost-effective A's seized the chance to add Lucroy when the opportunity arose.

''We fully expect that this will be a bounce back year for him,'' A's general manager David Forst said. ''I didn't think that a catcher of Jonathan's caliber would be available at a cost that would work for us. When there is a guy like that out there than you have to try to jump on it if you can.''

On the day he arrived at A's spring training, Lucroy made several references to the team's potential as a darkhorse in the AL West.

''I'm looking forward to working with these guys and helping them get better,'' Lucroy said. ''Obviously no one's giving us credit around here . but I think that we're going to be sneaky. I really do.''

Lucroy spent his first few days with the A's getting at-bats on the minor league side and catching bullpen sessions to better get to know the pitchers.

''The physical part is the easy part. The hard part is the signs and getting to know the pitchers, communicating with those guys, making sure I'm comfortable with them,'' Lucroy said. ''I've always said I try to be a well-rounded catcher. I don't want to be an offensive-minded guy, I don't want to be strictly defensive guy. I want to be both. The great ones are.''

Not long after exiting Saturday's game, Lucroy sat alone in a room full of computers, watching video.

''Just familiarizing yourself, being on top of things,'' he said. ''That way when we go into opening day, I can be as prepared as I possibly can be to help this team win.''

Lucroy was scheduled to get Sunday off and won't play two games in a row until a later time. Manager Bob Melvin said he will catch in Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

''As far as the at-bats go, we're OK there. It's just incrementally getting him into the catching process,'' Melvin said. ''Some of these guys that signed late end up getting hurt pretty quickly. We don't want that.''

    • Mets' Vargas fractures hand, out 6 weeks
      March 18, 2018

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) New York Mets lefty Jason Vargas will have surgery after breaking his right hand in a minor league game.

The surgery is set for Tuesday. The Mets said Sunday that Vargas will resume his throwing workouts about five days after the operation, and no timetable was announced for him pitching in a game.

The Mets open the regular season on March 29 at home against St. Louis.

Vargas was injured Friday when he was hit by a line drive. The Mets signed the 35-year-old free agent on Feb. 18, signing him to a two-year, $16 million contract. He went 18-11 with a 4.16 ERA for Kansas City last season, making his first All-Star team and tying for the major league lead in wins.

With Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom set to face St. Louis in the first two games of the season, Vargas had been in line to start the series finale on April 1. Matt Harvey could move into the third spot in the starting rotation.

Royals sign reliever Grimm to $1.25M
      March 18, 2018

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) The Royals signed right-handed reliever Justin Grimm to a $1.25 million, one-year deal Sunday that includes up to $300,000 incentives after he was released by the Chicago Cubs last week.

The 29-year-old Grimm was 1-2 with a 5.53 ERA in 50 appearances last season.

The club also announced that pitchers Miguel Almonte, Sam Gaviglio and Trevor Oaks, catcher Cam Gallagher and infielder Ramon Torres have been optioned to Triple-A Omaha.

The roster moves leave the Royals with 46 players in major league camp.

Yankees sent rookie 3B Andujar to minors
      March 18, 2018

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) New York Yankees rookie Miguel Andujar will start the season in the minors, rather than at third base in the majors.

The Yankees optioned Andujar to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, clearing the way for Brandon Drury to claim the spot.

The move allows the 23-year-old Andujar, who hit .262 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 14 spring training games, to work on his defense in the minors.

''I think everybody got a peek at the kind of hitter we think he's going to be,'' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. ''Had a long talk with him (and told him), just go down there and continue to polish, continue to get better, continue to work, and it won't be too long before he's up here for good.''

Drury, obtained from Arizona last month, was the front-runner for the position. He hit .267 with 13 homers and 63 RBIs for Arizona last season.

Another rookie, Gleyber Torres, was in the mix to start at second base but was optioned March 13 to Triple-A. Boone said Torres will split time between his natural shortstop position and second.

Neil Walker, signed as a free agent Monday, played second for the first time and went 2 for 2, including a two-run double, in the Yankees' 8-5 win over the Miami Marlins. Tyler Wade is also getting time at second.

The rest of the infield will be Greg Bird at first and Didi Gregorius playing short. The Yankees outfield is set with Brett Gardner in left and Aaron Hicks in center.

Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton will share right field and DH. Stanton has also emerged as a left field option when Gardner get a day off.

Boone announced Saturday that Luis Severino will start opening day on March 29 at Toronto, and will be followed in the four-game set with the Blue Jays by Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray.

Jordan Montgomery will take the mound for home opener April 2 against Tampa Bay.

''It's an honor,'' Severino said. ''I was happy. After they told me I called my mother right away. It's something to celebrate.''

Severino allowed three runs, seven hits and struck out seven in five innings Sunday. Gary Sanchez, the starting catcher, and Bird homered off former Yankees left-hander Caleb Smith.

Stanton, in his first game against his former team, hugged Marlins manager Don Mattingly in the dugout and talked with former teammates before the game. The slugger, acquired in a December trade with Miami, had an RBI single, walked twice and struck out.

Stanton said seeing the Marlins' uniform in spring training wasn't strange but added it will be a ''little weird'' in the regular season.

The two teams play a two-game series April 16-17 at Yankee Stadium.

NOTES: Stanton just missed making a diving catch in left field on Scott Van Slyke's fourth-inning double. ... New York reassigned promising 20-year old outfielder Estevan Florial to its minor league camp. ... Boone hopes OF Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) can get at-bats in a simulated game Monday despite having a sore throat and fever Sunday. ... OF Clint Frazier (concussion) took dry swings and played catch.

          • D-backs ace Greinke won't start opener, gets time to recover
            March 19, 2018

Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke will start this season in the dugout.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Greinke won't pitch on opening day because of what's perceived to be a minor health issue.

Greinke exited his latest start after one inning because of tightness in his groin. He's scheduled to pitch again in spring training Wednesday.

The Diamondbacks don't want to push him to be ready for their first game March 29 at home against Colorado. Without this wrinkle, Lovullo said Greinke would've started the opener for the third straight year.

''Every staff has a No. 1 and he fit the bill perfectly,'' Lovullo said. ''He won 17 games last year. He was our staff ace.''

Lovullo said he wasn't ready to say who would start against the Rockies. The likely candidate is Robbie Ray, who went 15-5 with a 2.89 ERA last year.

''There's a strategy,'' Lovullo said. ''We don't just look at opening day. We look at opening day and then beyond, so probably five or six days beyond that day. And we want to make sure that we hit things just right to get it to the point where we have good matchups all the way through.''

ELSEWHERE AROUND THE GRAPEFRUIT AND CACTUS LEAGUES

            RED SOX 6, PHILLIES 5

Boston ace Chris Sale gave up four runs on five hits and three walks in five innings. He also struck out six. Mookie Betts hit two doubles and Xavier Bogaerts homered for the Red Sox. Aaron Altherr homered for Philadelphia.

            MARLINS 9, NATIONALS 1

Washington ace Max Scherzer was tagged for three homers and six runs in six innings. Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon each had two hits for the Nationals. Miami starter Trevor Richards worked four innings and allowed one run.

            ASTROS 2, METS 0

Justin Verlander pitched seven shutout innings and Carlos Correa homered for Houston. Steven Matz struck out nine in six innings for New York.

            ORIOLES 4, TIGERS 2

Baltimore starter Chris Tillman allowed one run in five innings. Detroit starter Michael Fulmer struck out five in five innings and gave up two runs. Dixon Machado doubled twice for the Tigers.

            PIRATES 11, TWINS 8

Miguel Sano, who had three hits, and Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota. Josh Bell, Jose Osuna and Christopher Bostick connected for Pittsburgh.

            BRAVES 6, BLUE JAYS 0

Julio Teheran pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings, striking out five and allowing four hits. The Atlanta ace has an 0.87 ERA this spring. Toronto starter Aaron Sanchez allowed two hits over 6 1/3 innings.

            INDIANS 5, GIANTS 4

Yonder Alonso hit two home runs off San Francisco starter Johnny Cueto. Alonso had three hits and drove in four runs. Cueto allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin gave up three runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. University of Virginia alum Jarrett Parker, dogged by retriever jokes from his teammates after his Cavaliers were ousted from the NCAA tournament by the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers, hit his third spring training home run in his bid to make the 25-man roster.

The Indians released outfielder Melvin Upton Jr., who hit .189 in 18 spring games. The 33-year-old spent last year in the minors, seeing limited action for the Giants' Triple-A team while slowed by injuries.

            WHITE SOX 15, DIAMONDBACKS 2

Matt Davidson, who homered, and Adam Engel each had three hits for Chicago and leadoff man Yoan Moncada got two hits and drove in three runs. Carson Fulmer pitched four hitless innings for the White Sox. Arizona relievers Neftali Feliz and Kris Medlen both got roughed up.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…..

              13) First of all, thanks to Ken Thomsen for having me on his excellent sports talk show last night from Las Vegas. Sportsxradio is well worth your time for knowledge about sports, with emphasis on the gambling side of it; it is on from 10-12 every weeknight here in the East.

              12) Sports is big business; read today that when Florida Gulf Coast made the 2013 Sweet 16, applications to attend FGCU went up 27.5% the next year.

When Butler made two Final Fours under Brad Stevens, applications went up 50%, so UMBC is expecting a boost to their coffers this coming year. Their online store did more sales Saturday than they did in the previous year combined.

              11) Penny Hardaway will be introduced as the new basketball coach at Memphis today; Tigers won 21 games under Tubby Smith this year, but obviously the big-$$$ boosters wanted things to change, so they changed. Hardaway has been coaching a high school team in Memphis, a really good team, so the thought is that this opens the door for Memphis HS recruits to stay home.

              10) Looks like Vikings @ Eagles is the NFL season opener September 6. Defending Super Bowl champ almost always opens the following season with a Thursday night home game.

              9) Eight NFL quarterbacks will make more $$$ than Tom Brady this coming season; four of the eight have never won a Super Bowl.

              8) Red Sox-New York will play two AL East games in London in June 2019, as baseball tries to suck every last dollar out of other countries now. Think A’s-Seattle open next season in Japan for first time since 2012. I’m not a fan of all this, but no one asked me.

              7) Look up JReidDraftScout on Twitter; there is an interesting 140-second clip on there of the interview Carson Wentz had with the Eagles at the 2016 NFL Combine. They showed him clips of some of his college plays and asked him to explain what he saw and why he did what he did on that particular play. Interesting stuff.

              6) Did lot of research on Nevada coach Eric Musselman Sunday; his dad Bill was also a really good coach, in college and the pros. He once went 48-6 as coach of a CBA team here in Albany. When Bill Musselman was coaching the Virginia Squires in the ABA (1976), he once played his whole starting lineup the whole 48:00. Imagine someone doing that today?

              5) Was doing some fantasy baseball research Monday; Cincinnati OF Scott Schebler hit .215 in 393 PA vs righties LY, but with 38 walks. he hit .271 vs lefties, but with only one walk in 135 PA vs southpaws. One walk in 135 PAs? A .290 OB% vs lefties is no bueno.

              4) Arizona Diamondbacks put a humidor in their stadium this year, hoping to make baseballs less “happy” with the goal to reduce the amount of home runs hit there this season. They did this in Colorado a few years ago and it worked a little bit.

              3) Oklahoma State 71, Stanford 65— Chippy game where host Cowboys came back in 4th quarter to extend their season.

              2) Utah 95, LSU 71— I turned this game on and it was 31-9 Utah; guess LSU kids weren’t too excited about playing in high altitude.

1— Get well soon to Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue, who has taken a medical leave of absence after leaving three games with an unknown illness. Hopefully he’ll be back soon.

                    Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

                    13) Memphis Tigers were down to 4,000 season tickets this season; they claim their program lost $4.7M this year, which is why they named Penny Hardaway basketball coach Tuesday.

Not great being a struggling college team in a city where there is also an NBA franchise.

                    12) Shortly after that, the first domino fell: 4-star PG Alex Lomax got out of his commitment to Wichita State and signed on with Memphis— he played for Hardaway in high school.

If Penny Hardaway dominates recruiting in talent-rich Memphis, the Tigers will be back in the NCAAs soon. Hardaway won three state titles in his brief career as a high school coach.

                    11) Dodgers lost 3B Justin Turner with a broken left wrist, after he was hit by a pitch. That’ll put him out for 4-6 weeks. Will they move Logan Forsythe to 3B and platoon Taylor/Utley at 2B?

                    10) Alex Cobb signed a 4-year deal with the Orioles; lot of teams could’ve used him.

                    9) If you’re betting games in Las Vegas this week, go to SouthPoint Casino- they’re offering bets at -$105 instead of the normal $110, so if you go 7-5 on $100 bets, you win $175 instead of $150. Plus its a good casino with good pizza and a very good ice cream stand on the way out the door.

                    8) Ole Miss signed Middle Tennessee State coach Kermit Davis; his salary goes from $750K to $2.5M. Davis’ dad was the coach at Mississippi State a long time ago; he is very good.

                    7) Jacksonville State’s campus was hit hard by a tornado in Alabama Monday night; the Gamecocks’ hoop team is still playing- they’re at North Texas tonight.

                    6) ESPN signed former NFL coach John Fox as a studio analyst; will be interesting to see what he has to say. When he was coaching the Panthers, he got Carolina to the Super Bowl with Jake Delhomme as his quarterback.

                    5) Graduate transfer QB Gardner Minshaw moves from East Carolina to Washington State; he threw for 2,140 yards LY, with 16 TD’s, 7 INTs. Before he heads to Pullman, the young man is being tutored by Hal Mumme, the father of the Air Raid offense, who is OC at Jackson State these days. Playing for Mike Leach is good for a quarterback.

                    4) Shohei Ohtani is 3 for 28 batting in spring training— I started to call it hitting, but 3-28 isn’t hitting, it is batting. Angels may have been sold a bill of goods with Ohtani being a 2-way player- they gave CJ Cron away to Tampa Bay to make room for Ohtani’s bat.

                    3) On April 17, Oakland A’s are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their move to Oakland- they’re playing the White Sox that night, and admission is free. Team got 300,000 requests for tickets for that night.

In 1968, the A’s sold out their home opener; they had 5,700 fans the next night. Probably won’t be a whole lot different this year, on April 18.

                    2) Back in the early 70’s, Austin Peay (pronounced Pee) had a really good player named James (Fly) Williams; he played in the ABA for a season after that. Prolific scorer.

Austin Peay fans had a great chant: “The Fly is Open. Let’s go Peay!!!”

1— Underrated gambling day today; first round of the Match Play golf tournament, with 32 matches going on. Kind of like a country club version of March Madness. Kind of.

                      • Cobb joins O's, wanting to stay in AL East
                        March 21, 2018

The Baltimore Orioles figured Alex Cobb would be a fine fit.

Cobb stayed in the division he knew best, finalizing a $57 million, four-year contract on Wednesday.

''They used the AL East and the success I've had in it to their advantage,'' the 30-year-old right-hander said. ''They kept challenging me with it and I love the challenge of pitching in this division and they know that over the times we talked. They did a really good job of making me feel like this is where I need to be.''

Cobb had spent his entire six-season big league career with Tampa Bay and was the last top starting pitcher available in a slow-moving free agent market.

Cobb joined Andrew Cashner and Chris Tillman, who were signed last month, in a revamped rotation that includes holdovers Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman.

The Orioles are coming off a last-place finish and 75-87 record.

Cobb was 12-10 with a 3.66 ERA in 29 starts last season. He pitched 179 1/3 innings in his first full year back after missing nearly two seasons because of Tommy John surgery.

He had turned down the Rays' $17.4 million qualifying offer in November, and Baltimore pursued him from the start of free agency.

''They didn't stop bothering me the whole offseason,'' Cobb said.

Cobb is 48-35 with a 3.50 ERA in the majors.

Baltimore opens on March 29 at home against Minnesota, but Cobb won't be ready to pitch then. He has agreed to be optioned to a minor league affiliate to help build up innings.

''I'm going to be pushing it as quick as I can,'' he said.

“I grew up in California and I had an aunt that lived in Central California. And when she’d drive to see us, she would stop at the fruit stands on the side of the road, and she’d get these big trays of strawberries. And she’d bring them up to our house, and she would put them into our refrigerator. And every time the refrigerator door was opened, the smell of strawberries would permeate the room. And I could not stand it. And since then, I’ve never eaten a strawberry. The thought of a strawberry is just … terrible for me.”

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                          13) It is likely that three NFL teams will start their 6th different Opening Day QB in six years when they open the season in September.

Vikings will be starting newly-signed Kirk Cousins; Houston and Cleveland have dealt away their Week 1 starting QB from last year, so Deshaun Watson will go for Houston if healthy and who knows what the Browns will do at QB, but it’ll be someone new.

It is really hard to win when you have no continuity; Vikings are strong at every other position, but their decision to let Case Keenum walk after he played so well LY will be highly scrutinized. Houston seems set at QB for the next decade if they can keep Watson healthy.

                          12) Dodgers won 40 more games than the Giants last year, which is eye-opening. San Francisco adds Longoria/McCutchen this year, but neither one of them pitches, although Bumgarner was not healthy last year, and now he is, so that’ll help.

Once your nucleus of talent gets old, it is tough to re-boot and stay a contender without a total rebuild. Will be interesting to follow the Giants this season.

                          11) Damn, the Red Sox hit only 168 homers last year, least in the AL. My A’s hit 234 and they were a bad baseball team. Will JD Martinez help that correct their power shortage?

                          10) Speaking of Boston, they’ve got $30M of dead money on their payroll this year, most in the major leagues— Rusney Castillo and Pablo Sandoval account for all of that.

                          9) Three NFL teams proposed a rule that would limit the amount of early games a western team can play during the regular season. Under the proposal, no team would be scheduled “to play more than three away games with a scheduled kickoff time prior to 1:00 p.m. in the time zone of their home stadium (without consent).”

For instance, during the 2017 season, the 49ers played five road games that kicked off at 1pm ET, which feels like a 10am game to them. Couple years ago, the Rams played a 9:30am game in England, which is a 6:30am start if you’re on West Coast time.

                          8) Cubs’ 1B Anthony Rizzo has been hit with 70 pitches the last three years, seven more than anyone else in the major leagues during that time.

                          7) Graceland 83, LSU-Alexandria 80— NAIA national title game drew 6,377 fans in Kansas City, as Graceland, from Lamoni, IA won the championship. Tough loss for Alexandria, which lost in the national semifinals by a basket last year.

                          6) Louisville sent interim basketball coach David Padgett packing; he’ll be fine eventually, but where do the Cardinals go from here?

If you’re Chris Mack, do you really leave your alma mater (Xavier) for a job where the team is likely to go on probation? Louisville might be a lucrative job, but the fanbase is spoiled and the chances of winning right away are almost nil, which won’t please the fanbase.

                          5) Western Kentucky 92, Oklahoma State 84– Hilltoppers are headed to New York City for the NIT semifinals next week- they won at USC, then 46 hours later, won in Stillwater, OK. Not an easy thing to do.

                          4) This made me feel old; Bobby Orr turned 70 this week.

For my 9th birthday, friend of my parents gave me a subscription to Sports Illustrated; the first issue that came in the mail had Bobby Orr on the cover and I became a huge Bruins fan- their loss in OT in Game 7 of the ’79 Stanley Cup semifinals remains one of my saddest moments as a sports fan.

Got to meet Bobby Orr at a minor league baseball game in the mid-80’s; nice man with really bad knees. He was playing in a celebrity softball game and he purposely hit fly balls so he didn’t have to run.

Do a search on Bobby Orr rushing the puck and you’ll see a guy who revolutionized the sport; he was so exciting to watch. Hard to believe he is 70 years old; to me, he’ll always be the guy flying thru the air after scoring the game-winning goal in the 1970 Stanley Cup playoffs.

                          Happy birthday!!!!

                          3) There are no instant replays in spring training baseball games; I’m pretty sure the umpires have adopted a “When in doubt, call him out!!” mentality.

                          2) This is the 11th year in a row the defending national champ in March Madness didn’t make it to the Sweet 16.

1— Combined seeds for the teams in the Sweet 16 this year is 85, the highest total since 2000.

                            • Arrieta makes 1st Phillies appeaance
                              March 22, 2018

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) Eight days before opening day, Jake Arrieta made his first appearance for the Philadelphia Phillies.

''I had a ton of nervous energy,'' Arrieta said Thursday after allowing two runs that included Miguel Cabrera's solo homer during a 6-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Arrieta struck out two and walked none, throwing 31 pitches over two innings. He gave up three hits.

''Very anxious to get out there,'' the 32-year-old right-hander said. ''I was in here at 8, and I couldn't stop moving. But now that's over, I can kind of take a deep breath and remember what it feels like to be in a game situation. Umpires, crowd, and it felt great.''

Arrieta and the Phillies finalized a $75 million, three-year contract on March 12, a deal that could be worth up to $135 million over five seasons.

Detroit starter Matthew Boyd and Philadelphia relievers Parker Frazier and Pedro Beato were ejected along with Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler and bench coach Rob Thomson as three batters were hit by pitches.
