    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

College football trends with Week 8 upon us……..

    — Texas Tech is 6-0-1 vs spread in last 7 games as a home favorite.

    — Florida Atlantic is 3-12-1 vs spread in its last 16 home games.

    — Eastern Michigan covered 16 of its last 20 games.

    — Tulsa is 14-5 vs spread in its last 19 road games.

    — Michigan State covered 10 of its last 13 games with Indiana.

    — Pittsburgh is 8-4 in its last 12 games as a road underdog.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

    13) Dusty Baker went 192-132 in two years as Washington’s manager, but went 4-6 in playoffs and that cost him his $2M a year job Friday. Nationals have had six managers (not counting interims) since 2006; next year will be #7.

Other Nationals’ news: Daniel Murphy had micro-fracture structure on his knee this week.

    12) Had to stay away from Twitter late Thursday, as Dodger fans came out of the woodwork to celebrate their first NL title since 1988. I’ve got nothing against the Dodgers, but any mention of the 1988 World Series makes my stomach churn— I prefer the ’74 World Series.

    11) Raiders 31, Chiefs 30— Great ballgame, bizarre ending, with an overturned TD, offensive pass interference and two defensive holding penalties, all in the last 0:18 of the game. Fun game to watch; Oakland’s win makes the AFC West race a lot more interesting.

    10) Raiders now have 10 TD’s of 20+ yards this season; 10 of their 17 offensive TD’s came came on plays of 20+ yards. Buffalo Bills’ longest TD play this season? 12 yards.

    9) James Harden has averaged over 10 free throws attempted per game the last three years; he is a career 85.4% free throw shooter. It is amazing to me how many times opponents let him drive to his strong hand— he is a lefty— figure it out!!!

Speaking of the Rockets, Chris Paul is already out 2-4 weeks with a bum knee. That didn’t take long. TNT studio guys were saying Thursday that Paul isn’t a good fit with the Rockets’ style anyway.

    8) Big 14 basketball media day was in New York City this week, which is weird; they’re having the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden in March, as they try and expand their footprint with Rutgers, Penn State, Maryland now in the league.

But the Big 14 is a midwestern league; would think having media day in Chicago would be a more normal thing to do.

    7) Memphis 42, Houston 38— Horrible loss for Cougars, who led 31-14 with 1:31 left in third quarter and 38-28 with 5:51 left in game. Memphis was down 17-0 at halftime- you do the math, Tigers scored 42 points in the second half.

    6) Oldest guys in the NBA? Vince Carter, Manu Ginobili, who are both 40 years old.

    5) Purdue’s basketball team played in the World University games this summer, which allowed them to have 30 practices and play 11 games, a huge advantage over other teams who take these overseas trips- those teams are allowed only 10 practices.

    4) Detroit Tigers hired former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire as their new manager; he was 1,068-1,039 in 13 years with the Twins, going 6-21 in playoff games.

    3) Why are foul tips not reviewable via instant replay? Anytime an obvious mistake is made by the umpires, the people in New York City should beep the crew chief on the field and correct things. The missed call on the foul tip in Game 4 of Dodger-Cub series was embarrassing.

    2) Clippers clocked the Lakers Thursday night; Lonzo Ball had 3 points, 4 assists in his NBA debut. It is only one game, but if Lonzo is a marked man because his father can’t shut up, then that is too bad, but he’ll get through it. He will be a very good NBA player, in time.

    1) Cam Newton skipped a couple of media sessions this week, which probably results in a fine; he can’t win this battle long-term, because he is a QB and the media needs access to him— it is part of why he makes so much money.

I’m not saying Newton is wrong; maybe he just has to adopt the Marshawn Lynch strategy of showing up and saying nothing. If he thinks he is being baited by certain writers, he has to rise above it and find ways to get around all that, for his sake and his employer’s sake.

Saturday's ALCS Playoff Betting Preview And Odds: Yankees at Astros

After watching their offense get back on track in a critical Game 6 victory, the Astros host the Yankees for Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday.

New York Yankees at Houston Astros (NYY +117, HOU -127, O/U 8)

          Series tied at 3-3

The Houston Astros have yet to lose on their home field this postseason and have been difficult to beat at Minute Maid Park of late, while the New York Yankees have lapped the field when it comes to historical playoff success. After watching their offense get back on track in a critical Game 6 victory, the Astros host the Yankees for Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday.

Brian McCann broke out of an 0-for-20 slump on Friday with an RBI double in the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie and Jose Altuve notched his first hit in four games moments later, delivering a two-run single as Houston improved to 5-0 at home during the playoffs with a 7-1 win. The Astros, who scored a total of five runs while losing all three games in New York earlier in the week, have won 16 of their last 18 contests at Minute Maid Park dating back to the regular season. Aaron Judge homered late to help the Yankees avoid being shut out following a seven-inning scoreless gem from Justin Verlander. New York likely will need to score more than one run in Houston for the first time this series if it hopes to claim its major league-best 41st pennant - the Yankees already have twice as many as the next-closest team - and face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

          TV:
          8:08 p.m. ET, FS1

          INJURY REPORT:

Yankees - SP Luis Cessa (Out For Season, Ribs), SP Michael Pineda (Out For Season, Elbow).

Astros - CF Jake Marisnick (Out For Season, Thumb), SP David Paulino (Out For Season, Suspension), RP Jandel Gustave (Out For Season, Elbow).

          PITCHING MATCHUP:
Yankees LH CC Sabathia (1-0, 2.30 ERA) vs. Astros RH Charlie Morton (0-1, 10.13)

Sabathia improved to 10-0 with a 1.69 ERA in 13 turns following a New York loss by allowing three hits over six scoreless frames at home in Monday's Game 3 victory. The outing marked the first time a pitcher 37 years or older blanked the opposition over six innings in a postseason start since Pedro Martinez did so in 2009. It also was Sabathia's first outing versus the Astros this season and first at home this postseason after yielding six runs - four earned - in two starts spanning 9 2/3 innings in Cleveland during the AL Division Series.

Morton lasted only 3 2/3 innings in his head-to-head showdown with Sabathia in Game 3, allowing seven runs and six hits - including a three-run blast by Todd Frazier. The 33-year-old New Jersey native, who is getting the nod over Lance McCullers Jr., will be making only his fourth career postseason start. Morton, who went 14-7 with a 3.62 ERA in 2017, held opponents to a .217 batting average at Minute Maid Park during the regular season while going 10-3 with a 3.34 ERA in 16 home turns.

          TRENDS:

          * Yankees are 0-7 in their last 7 League Championship road games.

          * Yankees are 0-5 in the last 5 meetings in Houston.

          * Astros are 8-1 in their last 9 League Championship home games.

          * Astros are 5-0 in their last 5 playoff home games.

          CONSENSUS:
The public is siding with the home favorite Astros at a rate of 60 percent and the Over is picking up 83 percent of the totals action.
