    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

    — Celtics sent Cleveland a 2nd-round pick in 2020 to complete the Kyrie Irving trade, so that is official now.

    — All nine hitters who started for the Texas Rangers Wednesday night have 15+ homers.

    — Brandon Phillips banked a $500K bonus when he got traded to the Angels last night.

    — Angels moved Cameron Maybin to Houston today, then acquired Justin Upton from Detroit, before acquiring Phillips.

    — Florida Gators have 10 players suspended for its football season opener against Michigan that is being played in Dallas Saturday afternoon.

    — Ironic that Matt Harvey is pitching for the Mets in Houston Saturday, after Hurricane Harvey devastated Harris County and much of the gulf coast this week.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……..

    13) JJ Watt is a great American; his fundraising efforts for the people in Houston have gone over the $13M mark. He is setting an example for other public figures on how to deal with a tragedy.

    12) There are many images from Texas that are very sad, but the clip on the Interweb of the man playing the piano in his flooded home is just unspeakably sad. It is on CNN’s website and other places. You wonder how long it’ll take for these people’s lives to return to some kind of normalcy.

    11) Astros acquired Justin Verlander from Detroit last night for three minor leaguers. Houston desperately needed a top-flight starting pitcher.

    10) Ohio State 49, Indiana 21- Hoosiers led 21-20 in third quarter, before reality set in.

Indiana fired Lee Corso as its football coach after the 1982 season; last night was the first time since then that coach Corso saw the Hoosiers play in person.

    9) Milwaukee’s Keon Broxton made a game-ending, HR-robbing catch over the CF fence to end the Brewers’ 6-5 win over St Louis Wednesday. If Milwaukee makes the playoffs, that catch is going to be a big reason why.

    7) Joey Votto recently walked eight times in two games, making him only the second player since 1984 to do that— Bryce Harper is the other.

    6) San Jose State basketball transfer Brandon Clarke (17 pts, 8 reb/game LY) bolts to Gonzaga, because nowaways, thats where all the transfers on the west coast go. Gonzaga or Nevada.

    5) White Sox traded P Miguel Gonzalez to Texas last night.

    4) Blue Jays 11, Orioles 8— Kendrys Morales hit three homers for Toronto.

    3) I’m surprised/disappointed that Jeff Fisher hasn’t surfaced as a TV analyst. He doesn’t need the money but would be curious to hear what he has to say.

    2) There are already 1,855 entries to this year’s SuperContest at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas; the previous record for entries was 1,854, set last year. Deadline is September 9, so it is likely that first place this season will be over $1M.

    1) RIP to coach Rollie Massimino 82, who won the last college basketball game played without a shot clock, Villanova’s upset of Georgetown in the 1985 national title game.

September good month/bad month starting pitchers

The Cubs right-hander has been steadily dropping his ERA and if Chicago is indeed going to win the NL Central, they will need Kyle Hendricks to be a big factor.

Much like our waistlines after a tasty Labor Day barbeque, MLB rosters have expanded to accommodate September, the final month of the season. And as College Football and the NFL crash onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail. The question is which ones can we count on and which ones figure to be candidates for offseason Weight Watchers meetings?

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33% percent or less of their efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s September’s list. Enjoy the games.

              GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

              Hendricks, Kyle - Chicago Cubs • 10-3 (5-1 A)

The Cubs right-hander has been steadily dropping his ERA and if Chicago is indeed going to win the NL Central, they will need Hendricks to be a big factor.

              *Jimenez, Ubaldo - Baltimore Orioles • 10-2 (7-1 H)

It seems like a miracle Jimenez can ever win. His oversized ERA only tells you how little starting pitching Baltimore has in their farm system. Maybe the Orioles will score a lot of runs at home like they have in the past for him.

              *Kershaw, Clayton - Los Angeles Dodgers • 13-2 (8-1 A)

Kershaw is back off the DL and you know the Dodgers are hopeful he stays healthy until early November. He was 15-0 with a 1.80 ERA in his previous fifteen team starts before being sidelined the third week in July.

              Liriano, Francisco - Houston Astros • 10-4 (4-1 H)

Liriano has been relegated to one inning relief duty for Houston and would only start if truly needed.

              *Price, David - Boston Red Sox • 14-2 (8-0 H)

Price has been working at the end of August on throwing from distances of 105 to 120 feet. After that Price starts mixing in breaking balls on a flat surface from 60 feet and six inches before he can graduate to the mound. The timetable is still this month for his return.

              Strasburg, Stephen - Washington Nationals • 7-3 (3-0 A)

Strasburg has looked good since returning from injury last month. Much like Kershaw, if Washington is going to win in September and October, he has to be electric.

              Verlander, Justin - Detroit Tigers • 11-5 (6-2 H)

For a second straight season Verlander, after a mediocre first half, become a force in the second portion of the season. Expect this competitive right-hander to give his all even on a rotten Detroit club.

              *Zimmermann, Jordan - Detroit Tigers • 8-4 (4-1 A)

Don't expect Zimmermann to duplicate his numbers of the past this month. With an ERA over 6, allowing 1.24 hits per inning and already close to 30 homers surrendered, not sure where he becomes a force again.

              BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

              Archer, Chris - Tampa Bay Rays • 5-10 (3-6 H)

All the talent is there, it's just that Archer has never put it all together. Granted, he's been on average at best clubs, yet given his ability and numbers, at 27, he should be overcoming mental lapses.

              Hammel, Jason - Kansas City Royals • 4-9 (1-5 A)

Pretty much a five-inning starter who falls off the cliff in hurry when the sixth rolls around, even if he is going well. It has been years since Hammel pitched well in the second half of a season.

              *Leake, Mike - Seattle Mariners • 4-12 (1-8 A)

On June 30th, Leake had an ERA of 2.97. Now he's starts September at 4.25. His problem, not missing bats, giving up an unfathomable 1.6 base hits an inning. Look for more of the same in September.

              Nelson, Jimmy - Milwaukee Brewers • 3-9 (1-4 A)

Over his career, Nelson has shown a tendency to wear down in the second half. The way he's trending since the All-Star break, it looks like deja vu all over again.

              *Sale, Chris - Boston Red Sox • 3-11 (1-7 A)

This season Sale has been outstanding against every team but Cleveland. Now on a strong club and having to pitch meaning contests late in the year, let's see if he does a better job. Note: Sale's White Sox teams had a 7-18 record in his September starts.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Friday's picks, betting odds and analysis

There is a full slate of 15 games on the MLB schedule today, including the Tigers officially kicking off their rebuild after shipping Justin Verlander and Justin Upton out of town.

                Double-Play Picks

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers (+100, 10.5)

The Angels are telling everyone they are going for it after making a big splash at the waiver trade deadline last night, acquiring Justin Upton from the Tigers and Brandon Phillips from the Braves.

The Angels currently sit 1.5 games behind the Twins for the second Wild Card spot in the American League, but now boast one of the league’s most potent lineups with the acquisitions of Upton and Phillips.

The focus returns to the field Friday night as the Angels visit the Rangers, who themselves are clinging to slim playoff hopes, for the opener a three-game series in Texas.

However, for possibly today only, it could create an opportunity for bettors. The Angels will more than likely be short-handed for tonight’s game and must face off against Rangers ace Cole Hamels.

Hamels is coming off a poor start last time out but has been his normal solid self this season, going 9-2 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. At home, he is 6-0 with a 3.04 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.

Additionally, the Angels struggle against lefties (hence bringing in Upton and Phillips). They rank 27th in runs scored and 29th in average versus southpaws, making that price with Hamels very tempting.

                Pick: Rangers+100

Arizona Diamondbacks at Colorado Rockies (-105, 12)

The Diamondbacks and Rockies begin a crucial series for the National League Wild Card at Coors Field in Denver on Friday night.

The red-hot D-backs have won seven in a row and have extended their lead over the Rockies in the NL Wild Card race to 3.5 games. If the Rockies have hopes of hosting the Diamondbacks for the Wild Card game they must put a dent in that deficit this weekend and don’t look now, but the Brewers are creeping back into the Wild Card picture, sitting just 2.5 games behind Colorado.

For Game 1 of this series, Arizona will send Taijuan Walker to the hill to face off against Colorado’s Kyle Freeland.

The right-handed Walker has been solid in his first season in the desert, going 7-7 with a 3.55 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP in 22 starts this season. Funny enough, Walker has been better on the road, despite the fact the D-backs have been outstanding at home. Walker is 4-4 with a 3.03 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP in 12 starts away from Chase Field.

On the other side, being in the midst of a playoff race hasn’t bothered Freeland, despite the fact he is a rookie.

The southpaw is 11-8 this season with a 3.81 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP this season and despite the thin air at Coors Field, he has been better at home. Freeland is 6-5 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP at home.

Obviously, both these teams have great offenses, but this series will have a playoff atmosphere and 12 runs is too many. Plus, the Under is also 8-3-1 when these teams face off.

                Pick: Under 12

Yesterday's Picks: 1-0 (Bumgarner was scratched from start)
                Season To Date: 130-120-13

                Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                Streaking:
Doug Fister, Boston Red Sox (3-7, 4.53 ERA, $ -154)

Right-hander Doug Fister is on a nice run for the American League East leading Boston Red Sox right now. During his last two outings, he has an ERA of 1.69 in 16 innings of work and struck out 13.

In Fister’s last road start he allowed a lead off home run to Francisco Lindor then was lights out the rest of the day, going nine innings only allowing the one hit.

Fister and the Red Sox take on Sonny Gary and the Bronx Bombers at Yankee Stadium today and are road dogs, available at +151.

Slumping: Matthew Boyd, Detroit Tigers (5-8, 6.13 ERA, $-217 )

The white flags are officially up in Motown as the Tigers spent yesterday dumping expensive contracts, shipping out Justin Verlander and Justin Upton. Today they turn to Matthew Boyd and that isn’t promising.

Over his last three starts, Boyd is 0-2 (0-3 TW/TW) with a 9.00 ERA, 1.86 WHIP in 14 innings of work. This isn’t a new trend on the season the 26-year-old has an ERA of 6.13.

An interesting trend for bettors, the Over has cashed in seven of Boyd's last nine starts.

Boyd takes the mound today in game one of a double header as the Tigers welcome the American League Central leading Cleveland Indians. The Tigers are currently +201 home dogs as the rebuild begins.

                Friday's Top Trends

                * Cubs are 7-0 in their last 7 home games. -197 today vs. Braves.

The only precipitation in the baseball forecast for Friday is in Miami where thunderstorms will threaten the Miami area. The roof at Marlins Park will likely be closed today.

There will be a strong wind in five ballparks tonight:

                * Indians at Tigers (Total: 8.5 ) - 12-14 mile per hour wind blowing to right field.

                * Braves at Cubs (Total: 8 ) - 13-15 mile per hour wind blowing in from right field.

                * Royals at Twins (Total: 9.5) - 10-12 mile per hour wind blowing in from right field.

                * Rays at White Sox (Total: 9) - 10-13 mile per hour wind blowing in from left -center field.

                * Cardinals at Giants (Total: 8.5) - 12-15 mile per hour wind blowing out to center field.

                Ump Of The Day

Fieldin Culbreth will be calling balls and strike today at Wrigley field and this is a troubling sign for Mike Foltynewicz and the visiting Atlanta Braves. Culbreth is near the top of our 2017 Umpire Homer Stats table at 17-6 (73.9 percent) for the season.

In his last 14 games behind the dish in Chicago the home team has won 12 and overall the Cubs are 6-1 in their last seven games Culbreth has had the gear on.

The Cubs are massive -197 home chalk this afternoon.
