    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

    — Cardinals-Pirates ESPN game tonite is from Williamsport- they’ve got a NY-Penn League team there. Little League WS is going on now in Williamsport.

    — Dodgers are now 52-9 in their last 61 games- they lead the NL West by 20 games, and the 2nd/3rd place teams are the two NL Wild Card teams.

    — Going into Sunday, Angels/Twins are tied for the 2nd Wild Card in the AL.

    — There were five penalties on the same play in the Broncos-49ers game; four on Denver, one on the 49ers. Somehow, all five penalties offset.

    — Blue Jays acquired P Tom Koehler from Miami for a minor leaguer.

    — DL moves:
Washington puts P Max Scherzer (neck) back on the DL
Dodgers put P Yu Darvish on the DL.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff for a summer Sunday……..

    13) Lot of major league umpires wore white wristbands Saturday to protest Ian Kinsler not being suspended after he verbally thrashed umpire Angel Hernandez earlier this week.

Earlier this month, umpire Joe West was suspended for three days, simply for saying that Adrian Beltre complained more than any other player.

The statement from MLB is clear; players matter more than umpires.

    12) Mets’ game Friday night ended around midnight; Curtis Granderson was traded right after the game, and was in Detroit Saturday afternoon, batting 5th for the Dodgers in a game that started at 4:00. Joc Pederson was sent to AAA to make room for Granderson.

    11) Is great to hear 82-year old Dick Enberg calling the Dodgers-Tigers games this weekend. One of the all-time great broadcasters, Mr Enberg called Padre games up until last season. To me, he is best-known for doing college basketball on NBC in the late 70’s/80’s.

    10) Umpire Adam Hamari is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; he had the plate in Detroit Saturday, and had lot of family at the game. Do friends/relatives of umpires cheer loudly for good calls? Do they take grief if a call goes against the home team?

    9) Giancarlo Stanton is the 4th big leaguer to hit 23 homers in a 35-game span; the other three were Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa.

    8) Brooklyn Nets will play regular season games against the Thunder and Heat in Mexico City in December.

    7) Detroit’s Justin Upton hit a homer Friday night; when he was between 2nd and 3rd base, he suddenly backtracked and went back to touch first base again, just to make sure he got it. Never saw that before If you miss first base, you dion’t even get credit for a hit, much less a homer, run scored and an RBI.

    6) Tight end Nick O’Leary caught three passes for 50 yards for Buffalo Thursday night; the Florida State alum is the grandson of golfing great Jack Nicklaus.

    5) Not only did Joc Pederson get sent to AAA, but San Diego sent RF Hunter Renfroe down to AAA El Paso— he was in an 8-for-64 skid at the time of his demotion.

    4) 53-year old Davis Love III is three shots out of the lead after three rounds of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. Love’s son is also in the Wyndham field; the last time a golfer won a PGA Tour event when his son was in the field? Craig Stadler, at the 2003 BC Open.

    3) Seattle Seahawks lost starting LT George Fant for the year with an ACL injury; Fant was a basketball player at Western Kentucky but had improved enough to become an NFL starter.

    2) Donald Trump sent out a tweet Saturday where he spelled “heal” “heel”; he did it twice in the tweet so it wasn’t a typo. I’m just asking: whose job is it to tell him that he spelled the word wrong? Don’t think that is a job I’d want. His 11-year old kid should know the difference between heel and heal.

    1) Former Boston Bruins’ coach/TSN hockey announcer Don Cherry sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame at Wrigley Field Saturday, dressed in a suit jacket, with, um……cherries on it. Cherry was a really good coach who is a complete character as a TV analyst.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Sunday's picks, betting odds and analysis

There is a full 15 game schedule today, including the first ever MLB Little League Classic from Williamsport, PA between the Cardinals and Pirates.

              Double-Play Picks

Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals (+130, 9)

The Indians and Royals will wrap up their three-game weekend series Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium with the Tribe looking to complete the series sweep.

This is the type of spot on the schedule where champions excel. Coming into this series the Royals saw this as their chance to really make the American League Central division a dog-fight down the stretch...well that didn't happen.

The Royals entered this series only 5.5 games back in the division but, after two straight losses, now sit 7.5 games out and the defending American League Champions will look to put their foot on the throat of the Royals this afternoon.

The Indians, winners of eight of their last nine on the road, will send Danny Salazar to the mound. Since coming off the disabled list on July 22, Salazar has been one of the best pitchers in baseball. In those five starts since his return, the Indians' right-hander owns an ERA of 1.38 and a microscopic WHIP of 0.8265.

Salazar is coming off his best start of the season where he allowed only one earned run on three hits, and racked up 10 strikeouts with zero walks, on the road against the Twins.

He will be opposed today by Jason Hammel, who continues to be a disappointment for the Royals. They have lost his last three starts and are only 7-17 in his 24 outings this season (4-10 at home).

The Kansas City offense just hasn't been able to produce anything all weekend, with only one total run scored in the previous two games, and that trend will continue Sunday against a very tough righty.

              Pick: Indians -140

St. Louis Cardinals vs Pittsburgh Pirates (-110, 9.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates will invade Williamsport, Pennsylvania for the first ever MLB Little League Classic which will be played on Sunday Night Baseball. No, these two major league teams will not be playing on the Little League fields we all know so well in South Williamsport, instead the game will take place across the river at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field - home of the Class A Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York/Penn League and the Pennsylvania College of Technology’s baseball program.

The previous dimensions of BB&T Ballpark were 345 feet down the left field line, 350 feet down the right field line, and 405 feet to center field. MLB has come in and made some adjustments leading up to the Cards and Bucs, including moving home plate closer to the backstop which will add some distance to those dimensions.

Tonight is a showcase game for the league (much like the game played at Fort Bragg in 2016 - Marlins 5, Braves 2) and since there is plenty of focus around the speed of the game, the league will put the word in to have this matchup wrapped up in just over two hours. Veteran umpire Gerry Davis will handle the home plate assignment tonight and he has a very wide strike zone that will favor the pitchers and keep this game moving along quickly.

The Under is 23-9-2 in Davis' last 34 games calling balls and strikes and the average total runs per game in his 22 games behind the plate this season is 7.09.

While the Cardinals are on a very nice streak of 12 Overs in their last 13 games, tonight will have a much different feel. Starting pitchers Mike Leake and Ivan Nova will treat the 2,500 fans (mostly Little League World Series players and their families) to a good old fashioned pitchers duel Sunday night.

Under has cashed in six of Leake's last eight starts against the Pirates and Under has cashed in Nova's last seven starts vs. National League Central opponents.

              Pick: Under 9.5

              Yesterday's Picks: 1-1
              Season To Date: 118-110-13

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (11-5, 2.49 ERA, $-11)

Although it has been a bit of an up-and-down season for Nats' left-hander Gio Gonzalez, over his last three starts he has been UP as high as any starting pitcher in Major League Baseball.

Over his last three outings, Gio is 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA, a WHIP of 0.76, and an opponent's on base percentage of only .231.

Gio and the Nats are slight road favorites at -120 today in San Diego against Dinelson Lamet and the Padres.

              Slumping:
Jharel Cotton, Oakland Athletics (5-10, 5.92 ERA, $-684)

The starting pitcher on today's board who is struggling more than any other is Jharel Cotton of the Oakland A's.

Over his last five starts, the young right-hander is 0-3 (team win loss 1-4) with an ERA of 8.42 and a terrible WHIP of 1.8312. Walks are a big problem for Cotton with 12 free passes allowed in those five outings.

If you're feeling peckish, Cotton and the A's are available at +185 on the road in Houston against Brad Peacock and the Astros.

              Sunday's Top Trends

              * The Los Angeles Dodgers are 52-9 in their last 61 overall. -145 today @ Tigers.
              * The Chicago White Sox are 3-12 in Miguel Gonzalez's last 15 starts. +175 today @ Rangers.
              * The Milwaukee Brewers are 1-10 in their last 11 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. +110 @ Rockies (Freeland).
              * Under is 7-0-2 in the Washington Nationals' last 9 overall. Nats/Padres Total: 7.5.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

There is a 40 percent chance of a thunderstorm developing at Target Field where the Twins will be hosting the Diamondbacks this afternoon. If the system is strong enough it could cause a delay, but the forecast looks clear both before and after the potential shower.

              Some notable winds today:

Marlins at Mets (Total: 8) - 10-12 mile per hour wind blowing in from left field.
Yankees at Red Sox (Total: 9.5) - 12-14 mile per hour wind blowing out to right field.
Indians at Royals (Total: 9) - 11-13 mile per hour wind blowing out to left field.
Phillies at Giants (Total: 8) - 12-15 mile per hour wind blowing out to center field.

              Ump Of The Day

Lance Barksdale will be calling balls and strikes this afternoon at Fenway Park for the rivalry game between the Yankees and Red Sox. Barksdale is one of the top homer umpires of all-time in Major League Baseball.

The home team is 14-3 in his last 17 games behind the plate this season and looking back to the start of the 2007 season the home team is a staggering 212-132, a winning percentage of 61.6 percent.

The Red Sox are slight home dogs at -105 with Rick Porcello going up against Sonny Gray.
