    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

    — Last five years, NFL underdogs coming off their bye week are 38-32 vs the spread.

    — Last five years, NFL favorites of 7+ points coming off a bye are 9-8-2 vs spread.

    — Drew Pomeranz left Friday night’s start with back spasms. Max Scherzer was scratched from his start at San Diego with another neck issue.

    — Mets traded Curtis Granderson to the Dodgers after Friday’s loss.

    — Angels’ rain delay in Baltimore last night was their first of the season.

    — DL happenings:
Cardinals put Adam Wainwright (elbow) on the DL
Cubs put Jon Lester (shoulder) and Justin Grimm (finger) on the DL
Twins put OF Robbie Grossman (thumb) on the DL
Nationals put Max Scherzer (neck) on the DL

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

    13) Rashard Davis returned punts for the Eagles Thursday night; the free agent from James Madison was signed earlier this week.

Last Saturday, while the chaos in Charlottesville was going on, Davis was working as a waiter in a restaurant in Charlottesville near the park where the mayhem with the statue of Robert E Lee occurred. He was hiding from his boss in the restaurant as he took calls from his agent updating him on the Eagles’ deal.

One day you’re a waiter, the next day you’re playing ball on national TV. Pretty cool.

    12) Something to think about when college football kicks off next weekend; only one of the last 19 national champs lost a non-conference game, Ohio State in 2014 (to Virginia Tech).

    11) There were 345 replay reviews in the NFL last year, the fewest since 2009, and 70 less than in 2015.

    10) 130 free agents changed teams in the NFL this offseason, also the fewest since 2009.

    9) Bill Belichick’s coaching record: 263-125
    Tom Brady won-loss record: 208-61
    Belichick’s record without Brady: 55-64

    8) Baltimore Ravens play in London in Week 3, but they don’t have the usual bye the next week- they host their rival, the Steelers. Ravens don’t have their bye until Week 10.

    7) Penn State gave coach James Franklin a 6-year contract extension, worth $34.3M. Franklin is 25-15 at PSU, 14-11 in league games, 1-2 in bowl games; Nittany Lions were 11-3 last year.

    6) Jacksonville kicker Jason Myers struggled in Thursday night’s loss to Tampa Bay, now they’re bringing in Dan Carpenter to compete with Myers. Maybe it is contagious; Jacksonville lost to the Buccaneers Thursday, who just fired their kicker last weekend.

    5) Le’Veon Bell’s agent had an agreement with the Steelers on a contract back in mid-July, but Bell nixed the deal at the last minute. Not sure if that was a great move by him.

    4) Arizona football coach Rich Rodriguez is being sued by his old agents for $230,250; he fired them a couple of years ago, but they say he didn’t pay them enough. Rodriguez agreed to pay them 10% of the money he made from CBS Sports Network, 4% of his money from Arizona.

Rodriguez is a good dude; I have no idea about this lawsuit, but when he left CBS to coach at Arizona, the crew at CBS left his chair empty for their first show without him, thats how much they thought of him.

    3) During the Blue Jays-Cubs game Friday, the Cubs’ roving reporter interviewed hockey star Patrick Sharp, who was sitting in the stands. Sharp grew up rooting for the Jays, but he tried to be political saying which team he was rooting for.

    2) Not the best week to be a statue, eh? Except for the home run sculpture in Miami, which Dade County says can’t be taken out of Marlins Park.

    1) Some good news for Marlins’ fans; David Samson is out as team president. This is a guy who was president of a baseball team who went on Survivor during baseball season— he was the first person voted out on Survivor.

At one point, he was Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria’s stepson. Now the Marlins are rid of Loria and Samson, and they’re much better off.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Saturday's picks, betting odds and analysis

              Double-Play Picks

Cincinnati Reds at Atlanta Braves (-140, 10)

A pair of rebuilding National League teams do battle as the Reds and Braves will continue their three-game weekend set Saturday in Atlanta.

The Reds, who are in the basement of the NL Central at 52-71, struck first in this series, taking the opener over the Braves 5-3. Atlanta actually happens to be in third place in the NL East at 54-66. The Braves will look to even up the series when they send Julio Teheran to the bump to take on the Reds’ Robert Stephenson.

Unfortunately for the Braves, Teheran hasn’t overly enjoyed his team’s new digs at SunTrust Park. The young right-hander is just 1-8 with a whopping 7.07 ERA and a 1.588 WHIP in 12 starts at home this season.

Teheran face a Reds’ lineup that can be inconsistent, but is plenty powerful. Led by Joey Vott, who is just raking this season, the Reds rank eighth in home runs and OPS and over the last 13 games they have averaged 6.9 runs per game, resulting in the Over going 11-2.

On the other side is Stephenson, who falls under the category of another Reds struggling starter. It is well documented that the Reds have the worst starter ERA in the MLB and Stephenson has contributed to that.

Stephenson started off as a reliever for the Reds pitching to a 7.43 ERA, but makes his fourth start of the season Saturday. In his first three-stars he 24-year-old rookie right-hander went 0-2 with a 5.28 ERA and a WHIP of 1.630.

The Braves aren’t a thumping team like the Reds, but they can hit for average. Expect plenty of runs to be scored Saturday.

Oh and as a side note, the Over is 12-3-3 in umpire Jim Reynolds' last 18 games behind home plate.

              Pick: Over 10

Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals (+125, 9.5)

The Indians faced a crucial test when they embarked on 11-game road trip back on August 10th, which included stops in Boston and Minnesota and finishes off in Kansas City and they are passing with flying colors.

Cleveland is 7-2 on the road trip, outscoring 49-19 and has extended its lead over Twins and Royals in the AL Central to 6.0 and 6.5-games respectively. Edwin Encarnacion is having a one of his trademark hot streaks, going yard six times during the road trip.

The “Ed-wing” led Cleveland offense faces off against Royals lefty Jason Vargas, who has come back down to earth after a red-hot start to the season. Vargas is 14-6 on the season with a 3.45 ERA and a WHIP of 1.275. But since the start of July, he is just 2-3 with a 7.08 ERA and a 1.748 WHIP.

To make matters worse, Cleveland crushes lefties, scoring an MLB best 190 runs of south paws this season, including 48 dingers.

Meanwhile Trevor Bauer takes the mound for the Indians. The right-hander is 4-5 with a 6.23 ERA and a 1.573 WHIP away from home this season. He faces a Royals lineup that has also has an offensive surge of late, plating 5.9 runs per game in the last 13 games, with the Over going 10-2-1 in the process.

Expect another game with plenty of runs scored.

              Pick: Over 9.5

              Yesterday's Picks: 1-1
              Season To Date: 117-109-13

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
              Chris Sale, Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox gave up a king’s ransom to acquire Chris Sale in the offseason from the Chicago White Sox and so far, it has worked out just fine. The 6’6’ southpaw has been an absolute monster all season long sporting a 14-4 record (18-6, TW-TL), 2.51 ERA and a .88 WHIP.

Sale’s last two starts have been on the road against division rivals from Tampa Bay and the Bronx. The Red Sox have won both games and he gave up one run in 15 innings (.60 ERA), struck out 25 and only walked three.

Sale returns to Fenway tonight and the Red Sox are big -240 chalk against CC Sabathia and the Yankees.

              Slumping:
              Michael Fulmer, Detroit Tigers

Michael Fulmer won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2016 and his performance in the first half of this season earned him his first All-Star spot. Since like most things with the Detroit Tigers have fallen apart.

Fulmer has been battling inflammation around his ulnar nerve (elbow on his pitching arm) and if the results are any indication it is bothering him. In his last two starts, he has a 9.00 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, striking out seven and walking six.

Things don’t get any easier today with the juggernaut Dodgers visiting Tiger Stadium. Fulmer and the Tigers are +143 dogs.

              Saturday's Top Trends

              * Over is 11-1 in Cardinals last 12 overall. O/U: 9 @ Pirates.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

Saturday should be a decent day for baseball around the Majors. There is a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms at PNC Park in Pittsburgh where the Cardinals are in town to play the Pirates, but the forecast says that any storms will be early in the day and they should be able to get the game in.

The most notable wind is at AT&T Park in San Francisco, where the Giants and a 12-15 mile per hour hitters wind blowing out to left is going to greet the Phillies.

              Ump Of The Day

Angel Hernandez: Ian Kinsler’s favourite umpire is back behind the plate today continuing his quest to ruin baseball games. Angel Hernandez is calling balls and strikes today in Minnesota and in his last eight games the over has failed to cash.

Hernandez strike zone has been very forgiving to pitchers in the last few weeks, something Kinsler pointed out in his rant earlier this week while suggesting that the 23-year veteran find another form of employment.

Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke and Twins rookie Jose Berrios will get the benefit of Hernandez’s strike zone tonight with the total currently sitting at 9.
