    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

    13) Damned if you do, damned if you don’t: I know people who stopped watching the NFL last year because of the Colin Kaepernick/kneeling thing. Granted, these people aren’t avid fans, but they did stop watching games.

Now there is a petition with 130,000 names on it claiming THEY will boycott games if some NFL team doesn’t sign Kaepernick. The fact that he may have turned down Seattle’s offer to be a backup doesn’t seem to matter to these humans— maybe they want him to take Tom Brady’s place.

I don’t know, but if I never hear the word “politics” again, it’ll be too damn soon.

    12) Mets saved $4M by trading Jay Bruce to the Indians. Its always good when the Wilpons can bank an extra $4M, seeing as how they’re friends with Bernie Madoff and all— a little extra change never hurt anyone.

Bronx Bombers offered $1M and two prospects for Bruce; the two prospects mustn’t be very good, or else the Mets just preferred cash.

    11) 44-year old pitcher Bartolo Colon was in the big leagues before 17 of the current 30 major league stadiums were opened.

    10) Houston Texans have five Clemson guys on their squad, a good college team to pick from. Never hurts to have players who are used to winning.

    9) Scary story about Oakland University hoop coach Greg Kampe, who almost died this summer when six kidney stones that were lodged in his kidney became infected. He wound up in intensive care for five days— he is OK now, but in his early 60’s, sepsis is a very dangerous thing to have in your system. He was smart to go to the ER to get treatment.

Kampe is 583-424 in his head coaching career, all of which has been spent at Oakland.

    8) If you care about such things, ESPN will have 28 consecutive hours of fantasy football coverage on its airwaves, starting Monday night at 7pm.

    7) Mike Krzyzewski is having knee replacement surgery this week, so Duke’s basketball team has cancelled its summer trip to the Dominican Republic. Teams can only take one of those trips every four years; they’ll probably go next year now.

    6) Odd Fact of the Day: A 91-year old woman in Thailand earned a college degree after spending more than 10 years studying for it— she got her diploma from the country’s king. Good for her.

    5) With Padres leading 3-2 at Cincinnati Thursday with one out and tying run on second with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning, manager Andy Green changed pitchers, replacing righty Kirby Yates with lefty Brad Hand with a 2-2 count on Joey Votto.

Not sure how many times I’ve seen this before, but it is very few. Hand is San Diego’s closer, but to close this win, he had to get eight outs!!! Unusual strategy.

Votto walked, Adam Duvall struck out, then Scooter Gennett hit a grand slam, making Green’s strategy a complete disaster. Have no idea what he was thinking; the San Diego TV guys said this: “…..some interesting decisions by Andy Green”

    4) UAB has brought back its football team this year, after it was gone for a couple years; the mayor of Birmingham says the team’s return will have a $50M positive impact on the city’s economy.

Maybe he thinks the Crimson Tide are moving from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham.

    3) Mets had a deal to send Neal Walker to the Bronx at the trade deadline, but when Bronx acquired Sonny Gray, they scuttled the Walker deal, using Walker’s medical records as the excuse why. Mets’ brass wasn’t amused, which may be why Jay Bruce is in Cleveland now.

That and the thing about Bronx not wanting to absorb Bruce’s contract, which the Indians did.

    2) Quarterbacks are valuable; there are reports that the Bengals turned down a 2nd-round pick for backup QB AJ McCarron. That is surprising.

    1) Atlanta Falcons had six games LY where they had a +3 or better turnover ratio; thats going to be really difficult to replicate this season. Numbers people think Atlanta will regress some this season, and thats before factoring in the fact that they have two new coordinators this year.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Friday's picks, betting odds and analysis

There is a full slate of 15 games on the MLB schedule Friday, including fiery Marcus Stroman taking the mound in an interleague matchup versus the Pirates.

                  Double-Play Picks

Pittsburgh Pirates at Toronto Blue Jays (-140, 8.5)

2017 hasn’t gone exactly the way the Pirates and Blue Jays had hoped when the season began back in April and while it is a long shot for either to make the playoffs this year, each may still have a glimmer of hope if they make a late push.

Pittsburgh is 57-58 this season and sits in fourth place in the National League Central, however remarkably they are just three games behind the first place Cubs. Meanwhile Toronto is 54-60 and in last place in the American League East, but are just four games out of the second wild card spot in the AL.

The two teams will try to continue to claw back into contention when they begin a three-game interleague set in Toronto this weekend. Jameson Taillon gets the call for the Pirates in Friday night’s opener, while the Blue Jays will counter with Marcus Stroman.

Taillon has had an up-and-down season for the Pirates, going 6-5 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.500 WHIP in 16 starts this season, but it has been a rough go for the right-hander sine the calendar turned over to July. In six starts since then, Taillon is 2-3 with a big 7.94 ERA and a 1.800 WHIP.

Stroman meanwhile has been one of the lone bright spots in the Jays rotation this season. He is 10-5 with a 3.17 ERA and 1.331 WHIP. The fiery right-hander has been even better at home, going 4-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a 1.276 WHIP.

In fact, in Stroman’s last eight starts at Rogers Centre the Blue Jays are 7-1, where he has pitched to a 2.32 ERA and a 1.232 WHIP.

                  Pick: Blue Jays -140

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals (-140, 9)

To say it has been an inconsistent year for the Cardinals would be an understatement, but low and behold, St. Louis has won six straight ball games and now trails the Cubs by just one game in the National League Central. They’ll look to stay hot as they begin a three-game home set against the Braves on Friday night.

A big reason for the latest Cards surge has been the re-awakening of their bats. St. Louis is averaging a whopping nine runs per game during their streak. St. Louis will try to keep rolling against Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz.

Foltynewicz has been surprisingly solid for the Braves this season, pitching to a 3.94 ERA and a 1.380 WHIP. The 25-year-old right-hander has had a bit more trouble on the road this season, pitching to a 4.28 ERA and a 1.341 WHIP.

But speaking of inconsistencies, look for further than Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright. It is definitely a down season for the former Cards’ ace, despite an 11-5 record he has a 5.00 ERA and a 1.465 WHIP.

Luckily he has looked more like his former self at Busch Stadium this season, going 7-1 with a much more respectable 3.19 ERA and a 1.281 WHIP.

Look for the veteran starter to find some of his old magic Friday night.

                  Pick: Cardinals -140

                  Yesterday's Picks: 1-1
                  Season To Date: 108-102-13

A strained right oblique muscle crippled the first half of the Texas Rangers lefty’s season but since his return at the end of June, he has been steady. Over his last three assignments, Hamels owns a 3.00 ERA, a .95 WHIP, an an opponent’s on base percentage of .265, 17 strikeouts, and only four walks.

Hamels’ last trip to the mound was a brilliant complete game, four-hit shutout against the Minnesota Twins. Cole will look to continue his winning as a home underdog (+115) tonight against the visiting Houston Astros.

                  Slumping:
                  Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians

It’s been a rough August for Carlos Carrasco and the Cleveland Indians when the righty takes the mound. In his last two starts, he's gone a combined 7.1 innings and allowed 10 runs. The Indians have lost both of those starts.

Carrasco and the Indians are -129 road chalk against Jacob Faria and the Tampa Bay Rays.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

There is some rain in the forecast today for Washington (45-60 percent chance) where the Nationals are scheduled to host the San Francisco Giants. There will be thunderstorms in the area all day, so we'll have to wait and see what they decide to do with that contest.

Not much for wind today across the Major Leagues, there will be a stiff 11-14 mile per hour wind blowing out to right center at Oakland Coliseum. The total for tonight's game between the Orioles and Athletics is 9.5.

                  Ump Of The Day

Sam Holbrook: There is no home team bias lately when Sam Holbrook is behind home plate. On the season road teams are a pedestrian 11-10 when Holbrook is calling balls and strikes. However, the road team is 8-0 in his last eight games behind home plate.

Great news for Baltimore backers tonight, the Orioles are in Oakland tonight and are currently available at -107.
