    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — Mike Trout got his 1,000th career hit on his 26th birthday Monday.

    — In parts of Wyoming, the speed limit is 80 mph. Wow.

    — Former big league 1B Ike Davis is making a comeback as a pitcher in the Arizona State League with a Dodgers farm club.

    — New Year’s Eve at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas? $499 for the night. Yikes.

    — 36-year old WR Anquan Boldin signed with the Buffalo Bills for one year, $2.75M.

    — RIP Don Baylor 68, who passed away this weekend. A very good player and first manager of the Rockies, he played 19 years in the major leagues— he was AL MVP in 1979. RIP

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) Think about how smart/fortunate the Green Bay Packers have been; since 1992, their starting QB’s have been Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Thats it. Two Hall of Famers.

By way of contrast, my favorite team, the Rams, have had 10 different #1 QB’s since ‘92, and Jared Goff will be #11 this season.

    12) Chargers’ QB Philip Rivers has 8 kids, and therefore is being allowed to commute 71 miles from his home to training camp every day. Very odd situation— chances are Rivers will be retired by the time the Rams/Chargers move into the new Hollywood Park stadium in 2020.

Since 2002, Drew Brees/Philip Rivers have been the Chargers’ #1 QB’s; not bad. In the five years before that, 1997-2001, the Chargers had five different #1 QB’s: Stan Humphries, Craig Whelihan, Jim Harbaugh, Ryan Leaf and Doug Flutie. Continuity is very important.

    11) This from the Football Outsiders Almanac, which I just bought online:

“Last year’s Oakland Raiders had the lowest scoring differential (plus-31) of any 12-4 team in NFL history. The other seven teams that went 12-4 with a scoring differential of plus-70 or lower averaged a 9-7 record the next year.”

    10) I’m not a big fan of fantasy football, but a ton of people are, and one of the questions those people need to answer this season is what impact Adrian Peterson will have in New Orleans. Saints open the season in Minnesota, against Peterson’s old team, the Vikings.

    9) The daughter of Saints’ coach Sean Payton goes to college at Pepperdine; she is a PR intern at the Cowboys’ training camp in Oxnard, CA this summer.

    8) Cam Newton isn’t practicing with the Panthers just yet; his shoulder’s health is going to determine a lot of how well Carolina does this season.

    7) John Elway’s new contract nets him $6M a year to run the Denver Broncos, who’ve won more games than any team in the NFL during Elway’s tenure as GM, except New England.

    6) Tennessee Titans wanted QB Marcus Mariota to gain weight to play this season, but he came to camp lighter, at 215. We’ll see how that works out for him.

    5) QB Brock Osweiler will start the Browns’ preseason opener this week.

    4) Bob Stoops retired as Oklahoma’s footballl coach back in June, at age 56, young for a coach to retire. Seems odd until you read that Stoops’ dad was a really good high school coach who died during a game when he was only 54. Then it makes a lot more sense.

    3) Chargers have a new head coach in Anthony Lynn, but he has experienced coordinators, in ex-head coaches Ken Whisenhunt, Gus Bradley. That makes good sense.

    2) This is a fun week ahead of us: NFL exhibitions resume Wednesday, and the last major of the golf season is this week, as well as the last week of the regular season for my fantasy baseball league. Rams play Dallas Saturday night— looking forward to seeing the Rams’ new offense.

    1) My 12-day vacation to Las Vegas/Canton, OH was great fun; seems like six weeks ago I watched LaVar Ball’s AAU team play in Vegas, but it was only 13 days ago. Any night spent watching baseball in the Westgate SuperBook is also tremendous.

That said, it is good to be home.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Tuesday's picks, betting odds and analysis

              Double-Play Picks

Texas Rangers at New York Mets (-115, 9)

The Rangers and Mets will meet tonight for the third time this season. The two teams split a two-game series in Arlington in June and they will battle Tuesday and Wednesday in another weird two-game series, this time in Queens.

Andrew Cashner will get the ball for the Rangers and he has actually been decent for Texas this season. His 7-8 record and his ERA of 3.36 are much better numbers than someone of his pitching skill-set should be producing.

When you dig a bit deeper into his numbers, however, they paint a vastly different picture. In Cashner's last four starts on the road he is 1-3 with an ERA of 6.23 and a WHIP of 1.569. Our major complaint with Cashner is that he doesn't miss many bats (31 strikeouts on the road) yet still walks way too many opposing hitters (25 walks on the road). If you're not a strikeout pitcher, that's perfectly fine - just don't give out free passes.

With all of this negative data on Andrew Cashner, why is Under 8-2 in his 10 road starts this season? A lack of run support from his offense. The Rangers are averaging only 2.7 runs per game in Cashner's road starts this season...but that should change today.

Chris Flexen will get the start for the Mets in front of the home fans at Citi Field. To say the Flexen experiment has not gone well for the Mets would be a bit of an understatement. The young right-hander was plucked from AA (a very brief stop in AA) and shipped to the big leagues a couple of weeks ago and he's clearly not ready.

Flexen has yet to go past three innings in his major league career (two starts) and he owns an ERA of 12.00, a WHIP of 3.000, and an opponent's on base percentage of .559. He's also allowed two home runs in just six innings of work to go along with five walks.

All of the above factors, in addition to the fact that the Mets are the top Over team in baseball at 63-35-11 (32-18-6 at home), and tonight's game should sail over the posted total of 9.

              Pick: Over 9

Houston Astros at Chicago White Sox (+225, 9.5)

The American League leading Astros meet the White Sox for the first time this season when they begin a three-game set in Chicago on Tuesday night.

Houston may be happy to be back on the road after a sloppy home stand, which required an epic comeback Sunday against Toronto to finish the seven games at 3-4.

The Astros are the best road team in baseball at 38-15, making bettors a profit of $2012 (based on $100 bets) this season. That’s almost $1000 more than the next closest team! What makes those numbers even more impressive is the margin of victory. Houston has outscored opponents by 122 runs in those games, resulting in them going a ridiculously impressive 36-17 mark against the runline on the road.

Houston will look to start this series off with a bang as they send ace Dallas Keuchel to toe the rubber for the opener. Keuchel had been out for a good chunk of the season due to a neck issue and while he has been a little rusty in his first two starts since his return, his year overall has been outstanding. The lefty is 9-1 this season with a 2.15 ERA and a 1.004 WHIP.

He faces a White Sox lineup that ranks 25th in runs per game and OPS and 23rd in home runs.

Chicago counters with a lefty of their own in Derek Holland and it could be a long night for the White Sox’s southpaw. Holland is 5-11 with a 5.27 ERA and a 1.553 WHIP and faces a Astros lineup that also feasts on lefties, ranking second in AL runs scored off left-handers and first in home runs.

              Pick: Astros -1.5 (-155)

              Yesterday's Picks: 0-2
              Season To Date: 106-99-12

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Kenta Maeda, Los Angeles Dodgers (10-4, 3.79 ERA, $607)

The Dodgers are awesome, we are all well aware of that fact. Did you also know that the Dodgers are 13-3 in Kenta Maeda's last 18 starts this season? Pretty impressive Kershaw-like numbers.

If you narrow that sample size down to Maeda's last four starts he owns a team win/loss record of 4-0, an ERA of 1.23, and a WHIP of only 1.0455.

Maeda and the Dodgers are -125 road favorites tonight in Phoenix against Zack Godley and the Diamondbacks.

              Slumping:
Zach Eflin, Philadelphia Phillies (0-3, 6.13 ERA, $-326)

The Phillies have re-called right-hander Zach Eflin from AAA. He hasn't started a major league game since the end of May, but his big league sample size is large enough to get a good snap-shot of what he brings to the table.

The Phillies lost Eflin's last six starts before he was shipped off to the minors and he was particularly awful in his last three outings with an ERA of 13.20 and a WHIP of 2.400.

Eflin and the Phillies are +145 road dogs this evening in Atlanta against the Braves.

              Tuesday's Top Trends

              * Over is 11-1 in the Detroit Tigers' last 12 vs. National League Central. Tigers/Pirates Total: 8.5.
              * The New York Yankees are 10-1 in Sabathias last 11 starts vs. American League East. +115 tonight @ Blue Jays.
              * The Colorado Rockies are 3-14 in their last 17 road games vs. a right-handed starter. +210 tonight @ Indians (Kluber).
              * The Los Angeles Dodgers are 44-7 in their last 51 overall. -125 today @ Diamondbacks.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

Precipitation should not be an issue for any games on the MLB schedule for Tuesday.

Winds should also be a relative non-factor across the league with the two most notable winds occurring in stadiums that ball flight is not impacted too severely by the elements. There will be a 12-14 mile per hour wind blowing out to right field at the Oakland Coliseum where the A's will welcome the Mariners (total: 9), and there will be a 13-16 mile per hour wind blowing out to center at AT&T Park where the Giants will entertain the Cubbies (total: 8).

              Ump Of The Day

Chad Fairchild will be calling balls and strikes this evening in Pittsburgh where the Tigers will be in town to take on the Pirates.

The total for tonight's game is set at 8.5 and the Under has cashed in 11 of Fairchild's last 13 games behind the plate (Under 13-8 on the season).

It is also worth noting that, despite not really favoring the home team or road team in regular games this season or in his career, the road team is 10-1 in Fairchild's last 11 interleague games behind the dish. The Tigers are the road team and are +155 underdogs tonight.
