    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

    — Ohio State transfer Jaquan Lyle signs up with New Mexico.

    — Doc Rivers lost his front office role with the Clippers Friday; he has $20M, two years left on his contract, and will just coach from now on.

    — Nationals 4, Cubs 2— Daniel Murphy homered twice for Washington.

    — Jaime Garcia started on the mound for his third big league team in 15 days last night.

    — San Jose State finally got around to hiring a new hoop coach; Colorado assistant Jean Prioleau will get the job on Monday

    — Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin had his contract extended thru 2020; Pittsburgh has had three head coaches……..since 1969!!!!

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a summer night…..

    13) So I’m having dinner at a Ruby Tuesday’s last night; there are 5-6 people sitting to my left. Next thing I know, the two guys in the group are in the parking lot, trading punches. Cops were called, I think both of them got arrested and that was that. Just another Friday night in Canton.

    12) Spent several hours at the Football Hall of Fame Friday; if you like the NFL, this is an excellent place to visit. So much history to re-visit, the room with the Hall of Fame busts is very impressive, but bring your walking shoes to get there.

    11) Parking at the Hall of Fame isn’t great; the area is probably too small to host a venue that is so popular, and with all the construction going on, its a pretty good hike from where you park to the actual Hall of Fame.

When all the construction is done in 2020, there will be a Hall of Fame Village, with shops and places to eat. Look forward to seeing that.

    10) Pretty cool to see the Lombardi Trophy, which has its own display area upstairs in the Hall of Fame. They also have all the Super Bowl rings displayed in a case; they’re pretty big now.

    10) I was in here once before, in 2001, when Jackie Slater/Jack Youngblood were inducted; it is so much different now, so many more sponsors’ exhibits- the memorabilia tent is like a small building now. Back then, it was just a regular-sized tent.

It is normally $25 to get into the Hall of Fame; it is $30 this weekend. Cheapest ticket for the induction ceremony Saturday night is $40. Worth it, but listening to people this week talking about how much autographs/memorabilia cost now— this is definitely big business.

    9) Rams played Miami in the Hall of Fame Game in 2001; the induction ceremony wasn’t in the stadium, it was outside the Hall of Fame, with portable bleachers. Now the ceremony is in the actual stadium. Hope it doesn’t rain…..or my butt is going to get very wet. LOL

    8) It is ironic that the head of the Hall of Fame now is a guy named David Baker; when Kurt Warner played for the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena League, Baker was commissioner of the AFL— he ruined the league by moving teams in Iowa/Albany (where I live) to NFL cities, with hopes of making the AFL a AAA-league for the NFL.

The Arena League was awesome; we regularly drew crowds of 11-12,000 people in downtown Albany, where Touchdown Eddie Brown (Antonio Brown’s father) was the best player.

Baker’s son Sam was a tackle at USC and later for the Atlanta Falcons.

    7) In either 1996 or 1997, the Firebirds lost a home game 77-76 to Iowa; highly entertaining game. Little did I know that night that in 1999, the Barnstormers’ QB that night would lead the Rams to their first Super Bowl title. If it was a movie, it wouldn’t be very believable.

    6) What an honor to be selected as a presenter for the Hall of Fame; imagine it can be a touchy thing, especially for someone who may have changed teams, like Warner— he chose his wife, as did Jerry Jones. I wonder if Mike Martz will be here tomorrow; he and Dick Vermeil deserve so much credit for Warner’s initial success in the NFL.

    5) Jerry Jones’ Hall of Fame party here in Canton tonite is at a country club that he rented……for $5M. For one night.

    4) Dolphins are talking to Jay Cutler; looks like Ryan Tannehill is out a minimum of six weeks, with a strong possibility that he misses the whole season.

    3) Fantasy football is also a big business; ton of sites sites are advertising for leagues to sign up. Our baseball league is run by CBSSports.com, which does a great job.

    2) Former baseball commissioner Fay Vincent was talking Friday about how legalized gambling is going to help pro sports; this is the same guy who put Pete Rose in baseball prison for his involvement in gambling. Life can be very ironic sometimes.

    1) Can you imagine what is like, at the Gold Jacket Dinner for Hall of Famers, walking thru that gauntlet of Hall of Famers? The icons of the sport, all there to see you get inducted into the Hall of Fame. What a feeling that must be.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Saturday's picks, betting odds and analysis

              Double-Play Picks

Seattle Mariners at Kansas City Royals (-128, 9)

The Mariners and Royals are in the midst of a four-game series in Kansas City this weekend in a battle for the second American League Wild Card spot.

Kansas City struck first, winning the opener 6-4, but Seattle came back to take Game 2 by a score of 5-2 to climb within 1.5 games of the Royals, who currently holds that coveted second Wild Card spot. Game 3 goes Saturday night as Seattle’s “King” Felix Hernandez takes the mound against Kansas City’s Danny Duffy.

This has not been the “King” Felix we have been accustomed to seeing over the years. Hernandez is 5-4 with a 4.28 ERA (his highest ERA since 2006) and a 1.357 WHIP. If Mariners backers are looking for something to hang their hats on, Hernandez has pitched fairly well at Kauffman Stadium over the course of his career, pitching to a 3.00 ERA and a 1.200 WHIP in seven starts there.

Duffy meanwhile, has been a stud for the Royals at home this season. The southpaw is 3-3 with a 2.93 ERA and a 1.152 WHIP in seven starts at home this season. Additionally he has given up no home runs at Kauffman this year.

Finally, the Under is 6-0 in Hernandez’s last 6 road starts versus the Royals and is 6-1 in Duffy’s seven starts at home this season.

              Pick: Under 9

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants (+118, 8.5)

Madison Bumgarner allowed just two runs on five hits in seven innings pitched in the Giants’ opener against the Diamondbacks, dropping his ERA to 2.88 for the season. And they lost 2-1 and are 1-8 in Bumgarner's nine starts this season. It’s just been that kind of the season in San Francisco.

Game 2 goes Saturday night by the Bay with Chris Stratton getting the call for the Giants, while the Diamondbacks counter with Taijuan Walker.

Walker has been solid in his first year with the D-backs, going 6-5 with a 3.55 ERA and a 1.273 WHIP in 17 starts this season. Funny thing is, Walker has been better away from home this season, which is weird considering Arizona’s dominance at home. The young right-hander is 4-3 with a 2.94 ERA with a 1.327 WHIP on the road.

Walker faces a Giants lineup, that, well stinks to put it nicely. They rank dead last in OPS and home runs, 29th in runs per game and 24th in team average.

Stratton meanwhile is making just his fifth major league appearance this season and just his second start. The right-hander has allowed 12 earned runs in just 11 innings pitched and he will have his hands full with a deep D-backs lineup.

While it has been documented that Arizona has scored plenty more runs at home this season than on the road, they still rank fifth overall in runs per game, seventh in OPS and 13th in average.

              Pick: Diamondbacks -128

              Yesterday's Picks: 1-1

              Season To Date: 105-95-11

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Gerrit Cole, Pittsburgh Pirates (9-7, 3.97 ERA, $572)

Gerrit Cole had a frustrating start to the 2017 season, but he has turned things around in recent weeks. In his last nine trips to the mound, he has eight quality appearances and more importantly the Pirates have a team win/loss record of 8-1.

Over his last three starts, Cole is 2-0 (3-0 TW/TL) with a very tidy 1.80 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, opponents batting average of .293, and 22 strikeouts.

Cole and the Pirates are hosting the San Diego Padres and the worst offense in the Majors today and are -169 favorites.

              Slumping:
James Shields, Chicago White Sox (2-3, 6.19 ERA, $-137)

Not a lot of positives to build on for White Sox lefty James Shields in 2017, he has just one win in his last 10 starts (2-8 TW/TL) and the over has cashed in six of his last eight appearances.

Shields has been lit up in his last three starts, allowing 15 runs over his last 14.1 innings (9.42 ERA) and shameful opponents on base percentage of .413.

Shields and the White Sox are +259 road dogs at Fenway Park tonight against David Price.

              Friday's Top Trends

              * Braves are 9-1 in Mike Foltynewicz’s last 10 starts. Braves -128 vs. Marlins.

              * Dodgers are 6-0 in Rich Hill’s last 6 starts vs. a team with a losing record. Dodgers -209 @ Mets.

              * Over is 13-3 in Alex Cobb’s last 16 starts vs. a team with a winning record. Total: 8.5

              * White Sox are 1-7 in James Shields' last 8 road starts. White Sox +258 @ Red Sox.

              * Under is 6-0 in Lance Lynn’s last 6 starts overall. Total: 8.5

Weather To Keep An Eye On

Rain and thunderstorms will likely be an issue at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City where the Royals will welcome the Seattle Mariners. There is an 82-100 percent chance of rain this evening and thunderstorms are in the forecast all day and night. Officials may just decide to push this one. There is also a chance of thunderstorms developing and a 30-50 percent of rain at Fenway Park where the Red Sox and White Sox will attempt to get their game in.

There will be a nice hitter’s wind at Citi Field where the Los Angeles Dodgers will be in town. A stiff 14-15 mile per hour wind will be blowing to right center field and the total is currently at 9.

The Wind may be a bit of a factor at AT&T Park today where there will be a 14-17 mile per hour wind blowing out to left center field when the Giants host the Diamondbacks.

              Ump Of The Day

Chad Whitson will be behind the dish for this afternoon’s showdown at Wrigley Field as the Cubs host the Washington Nationals and that’s a promising sign for Cubs fans as he has been one of MLB’s top HOMER umpires so far this season.

In the 19 games, he has been calling balls and strikes the home team has walked away with the win 15 times (78.9 percent) and scoring 2.05 more runs per game and has made bettors $938.

The Cubs send John Lackey to the mound today and are -166 home chalk.
