    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the college football national title this year……

    — Washington Huskies, bet down from 30-1 to 20-1

    — USC Trojans, bet down from 8-1 to 7-1

    — Georgia Bulldogs, bet down from 30-1 to 25-1

    — Notre Dame, bet down from 60-1 to 40-1

    — Wisconsin Badgers, bet down from 40-1 to 20-1

    — Ohio State Buckeyes, bet down from 8-1 to 3-1

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random stuff from the Buckeye State

    13) Greetings from Canton, Ohio; made the trip from Las Vegas Wednesday for the Hall of Fame ceremonies this weekend. Long trip; flying from Vegas to Phoenix to Cleveland, with ton of Arizona Cardinal fans on the flight to Ohio to see their Redbirds play Dallas tonight.

    12) I made my hotel reservations for this weekend on February 4, the night before the Super Bowl, but some genius at motels.com deleted my reservation the next day, unbeknownst to me. Captain Obvious would tell you that this is bad for both business and my blood pressure.

Luckily, the two desk clerks here found an available room and saved me from looking like a dimwit had I driven a rental car 8 hours home from here with nowhere to stay.

    11) Assistant basketball coaches from Baylor/Louisville are in Estonia now recruiting Balsa Koprivica, a Class of 2019 big man. That can’t be a lot of fun to make a trip that long.

    10) Atlanta Braves went 24-20 while Freddie Freeman was on the DL; they’re 9-16 since he came back, primarily because they’re playing much better teams now.

    9) Braves’ 2B Ozzie Albies is the first major leaguer born in 1997 or later.

    8) Dodgers are paying Carl Crawford $21,857,142 not to play this season; his last major league game was last season, when he played 30 games for LA.

    7) Nevada sports books won $14.9M in baseball action in June, their best month ever in baseball.

    6) When the Mountain West had its football media day in Las Vegas recently, Hawai’i football coach Nick Rolovich hired an Elvis impersonator to follow him around for two hours, at $350 an hour. Thank you, thank you very much.

    5) Indiana Hoosiers haven’t had a linebacker drafted by the NFL since 1988 (Van Waiters); considering they play in the Big 14, thats hard to believe. Recruit some defensive players!!!

    4) Cleveland’s Austin Jackson made a fantastic catch Tuesday night at Fenway Park, catching the ball over the bullpen fence in right-center field. Best catch this year, no doubt.

    3) Colorado Rockies’ closer Greg Holland cut his hand in a kitchen accident and is day-to-day.

    2) Dave Bliss has been hired as the boys basketball coach/athletic director at Calvary Chapel, a Christian school in Las Vegas. Why is this newsworthy?

Bliss was a very good college coach, at New Mexico/Baylor/Oklahoma/SMU; in 2005, he was hit with a 10-year show-cause penalty by the NCAA, after its investigation into the death of one of Baylor’s players, which Bliss tried to cover up.

If your son played ball at this school, would you want Coach Bliss coaching your son?

    1) Braves 5, Dodgers 3— LA’s 56-game winning streak when they had a lead comes to an end; it is a major league record, with 32 games the next highest such streak.

Hottest team: Orioles (5-0 past five overall, 8-2 past 10 home games)

The Orioles cooled off the previously red-hot Royals, brooming them out of Charm City while outscoring Kansas City by a combined 15-3 score. Now, the O's look to continue their revival and scratch back to the .500 mark with a win over the visiting Tigers. Detroit has shown signs of life over the past five, going 4-1 during the stretch, but they're still a dismal 8-20 over their past 28 road games against a right-handed starting pitcher. The O's, meanwhile, set their sights of left-hander Matthew Boyd of the Tigers. Baltimore has won six straight againts southpaws, each of their past four at home and six of their past seven against teams with an overall losing mark. While they're just 3-8 over Chris Tillman's past 11 assignments, the O's are 26-12 across Tillman's past 38 outings against teams with a losing record.

Coldest team: Pirates (1-6 past seven games)

The Pirates had played their way into contention in the National League Central a few weeks back, climbing to within two games of the perch within their division. However, a 2-8 mark over their past 10 outings has them back to five games under .500 and 6 1/2 games behind the defending champion Cubs. While Pittsburgh was able to retain the services of Andrew McCutchen, and that's a feel-good story for the small-market club, there hasn't been much to smile about late in the Steel City. The Bucs have won just once over their past seven outings, they're 1-4 across the past five vs. RHP and they have won just six times over Chad Kuhl's past 20 outings. The Reds have been kryptonite to the Pirates, too, winning eight straight meetings in Pittsburgh and four in a row overall in the series.

Hottest pitcher: Corey Kluber, Indians (8-3, 2.90 ERA)

The All-Star Kluber takes the ball for manager Terry Francona trying to turn things around for the Indians. After an outstanding nine-game win streak, the Tribe have dropped three in a row. Mother Nature gave them a break Wednesday in Boston, giving the Indians a much-needed rest. Now, they'll have to deal with the hoopla surrounding Sonny Gray's debut in pinstripes. That's why it's good they have the unflappable Klubot on the hill. The Indians have won 10 of their past 11 home games, six straight at Progressive Field vs. RHP and 5-2 across their past seven against AL East foes. The Yankees have dominated this series recently, winning four of the past five meetings overall, and four of their past five in Cleveland. However, the Indians are 6-1 over Kluber's past seven tries against AL East clubs and 25-10 over his past 35 starts overall.

Coldest pitcher: Rick Porcello, Red Sox (4-14, 4.55 ERA)

What an amazing turnaround for Porcello this season, and not in a good way, obviously. He was 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 33 starts en route to a 2016 American League Cy Young Award. That came after a 9-15 recrd and 4.92 ERA in 28 starts in his first season in Beantown in 2015. This season has certainly resembled that campaign, and that's not good for Boston. Now he'll square off against the offensively-challenged White Sox, a team he knows all too well from his days as a member of the Tigers. Since the start of the 2014 season he is 1-4 with a 5.54 ERA across five outings vs. the White Sox, posting a dismal .347 opponent batting overage over 26 innings.

Biggest UNDER run: Royals (4-0 past four overall)

The 'under' has connected in four consecutive games for the Royals, while going 9-1-1 in their past 11 outings following a loss. In addition, the under is 5-1-1 in their past seven against teams with a winning overall record and 9-3 in their past 12 during the opening game of a new series. The under is also 14-6-2 in their past 22 against American League West foes, while going 7-3 in the past 10 meetings with the Mariners. The M's should cooperate with the low-scoring ways of K.C. lately, going 4-1 in the past five road games and 7-2 in their past nine road outings vs. RHP.

Biggest OVER run: Astros (19-7-1 past 27 overall)

The Astros have been a high-scoring bunch this season, leading the majors with 627 runs and an American League-best plus-163 run differential. The 'over' has been connecting frequently, going 19-7-1 over the past 27 games overall and 4-1 across their past five home games against a left-handed starter. The over is also 7-2 in their past nine vs. LHP, 25-8-1 in their past 34 against AL East clubs and 7-3 over their past 10 home games against a team with a winning overall record. While the under is 4-0-1 in Collin McHugh's past five home starts, he is still just making his way back from a long-term injury and appears to be a bit rusty.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Athletics

The A's and Giants wrap up their home-and-home interleague series on Thursday night in San Francisco, as the Giants look to square up the season series at 2-2. Oakland is 4-1 across their past five interleague road outings against left-handed starting pitching, but they're a dismal 11-43 over their past 54 road games overall vs. LHP. The A's are also just 19-40 over their past 59 games on the road, although they have had success against the AL West. They're 5-2 in the past seven against American League West squads. San Francisco also continues to struggle, going 1-5 over the past six games overall and 5-13 over their past 18 vs. RHP. Total bettors might want to hop on the 'over', as it is 8-1-1 in the past 10 meetings in this series.

Betcha didn’t know: Gray makes his debut for the Yankees, and he was unfazed by all of the trade rumors and the eventual cross-country move from Oakland to New York. He ripped off six consecutive quality starts to close his tenure with the A's, going 4-2 with a 1.37 ERA. That includes six strong innings in a 5-0 victory against the Indians on July 14. He has posted a 3-2 record with a 3.43 ERA in his career against Cleveland. Meanwhile, the All-Star Kluber has rolled to a 1.91 ERA over five career outings vs. the Bronx Bombers. Kluber has been a strikeout machine lately, posting 120 punchouts over the past 77 1/3 innings.

Biggest public favorite: Red Sox (-240) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Diamondbacks (+130) at Cubs

Biggest line move: Tigers (+135 to +125) at Orioles

LEADING OFF: Gray debuts for Yankees, Winker powering Reds
                          August 2, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                          A NEW SHADE OF GRAY

Sonny Gray makes his debut for the New York Yankees, starting at Cleveland against Corey Kluber and the AL Central-leading Indians. The Yankees got Gray from Oakland shortly before Monday's trade deadline. Gray was 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA for the Athletics.

                          POPPIN'!

Reds rookie Jesse Winker has homered in two straight games at Pittsburgh. The 23-year-old outfielder hit just two home runs in 85 games at Triple-A Louisville this year. Winker and Cincinnati will try to finish off a sweep at PNC Park.

                          ACES UP

Cubs lefty Jose Quintana makes his fourth start since being acquired from the White Sox, facing Arizona at Wrigley Field. Zack Greinke is 13-4 with a 2.84 ERA for the Diamondbacks and 5-0 in his past six starts.

                          GETTING EVEN?

Dodgers lefty Alex Wood (12-1, 2.38) absorbed his only loss this year when he was battered for a career-worst nine runs by his former Braves teammates on July 21. He'll try to avenge that drubbing when he starts for the NL West leaders against Atlanta at SunTrust Park.

                          TRY AGAIN

Royals righty Trevor Cahill makes his second start since being acquired in a July 23 trade with San Diego, taking on Seattle at home. He allowed five runs over four innings in his debut vs. Boston last Saturday. ... Orioles righty Chris Tillman is winless in 13 straight starts going into his matchup vs. the visiting Tigers. ... Rays lefty Blake Snell (0-6) looks to snap a 14-start winless streak when he pitches at Houston.

Column: Price is wrong going after Hall of Famer Eckersley
                            August 3, 2017

David Price sure has a lot of issues for a guy making $31 million a year.

It showed in June when the pitcher went off on the Boston media over some perceived slights. Nothing terribly newsworthy there, and Price is certainly not the first player to take his frustration out on those who cover baseball.

But when he went after Dennis Eckersley, it became a different story.

We saw it Tuesday night at Fenway Park, where Eckersley basked in a warm ovation from the home crowd when introduced between innings. They've decided who the good guy is in this dustup, and it's not Price.

What was even better was what analyst Jim Kaat had to say while announcing the game for MLB Network.

''David Price didn't confront Dennis Eckersley, he attacked him like a schoolyard bully,'' Kaat said. ''In front of all his teammates to make him look like a big man.''

That is pretty much in nutshell what happened, at least according to accounts of the altercation in the Boston Globe. In front of a group of teammates, Price confronted Eckersley on a team plane for not giving Red Sox players the proper respect while working as an analyst on the team's local broadcast.

The thing is, Eckersley isn't just an announcer. He's a former Red Sox pitcher himself and a first ballot member of the Hall of Fame.

He's also one of the most interesting people around when you want to talk baseball. But apparently Price already knows everything about pitching, so he went after Eckersley for making an offhanded remark about the pitching woes of one of his teammates.

''The point is if you're Price and follow the history of baseball, you have to have a little respect,'' Kaat said on the broadcast.

Kaat is an old school player doing a game on a network that usually bends over backward not to talk badly about any current players. But both he and broadcast partner Bob Costas seemed to want to go out of their way to make a point about how Eckersley was treated.

Not that Price seems to care. There's been no apology from the pitcher, nothing to say he regrets trying to embarrass Eckersley in front of the team other than a throwaway comment about perhaps someday discussing it with him.

It can't be that Price is too busy pitching. After being sidelined most of the first two months of the season, he's on the disabled list again with elbow issues.

In the second year of a seven-year $217 million contract, Price has made only 11 starts all year for the Red Sox. It's hardly the kind of production Boston expected when it signed Price to be the star of a staff that is now led by Chris Sale.

Maybe the pressure of trying to live up to a big contract is getting to him. Or maybe he's just another ballplayer with a sense of entitlement who thinks that because he pitches in the major leagues he knows all there is about the game and the people in it.

Here's what he may not know about Eckersley.

The right-hander started 361 games, which by itself would be a fine career stat for most pitchers. But after being converted to a reliever he saved an astonishing 390 more, mostly for the Oakland A's. At the time of his retirement he had appeared in more games (1,071) than any other pitcher in history.

Eckersley pitched 24 years in the big leagues, the last part coming during the steroid era. And he was elected to the Hall of Fame the first year he was eligible in 2004 with 83 percent of the vote.

He's got numbers Price will never reach. He's got the respect of people in baseball Price will never get.

And he's handled the Price situation as well as he handled hitters during his prime.

''I'm cool with everything,'' Eckersley told the Globe on Tuesday. ''I've moved on. I'm just going to keep doing what I do, which is call it like I see it. It's all about the Red Sox and the ultimate goal of winning it all.''

A team player, even though he's no longer on the team. A former Red Sox who will be celebrated long after Price is gone.

The kind of guy fans stand up and cheer for like they did Tuesday night, and the kind of guy Kaat was more than eager to stand up for when the moment called for it.

''I think he'd (Price) like a (second chance) because he found out how popular Eck is,'' Kaat said. ''He's as honest and candid a guy as there is and deep down he'd love to see the Red Sox win. But as an announcer he calls it like he sees it.''

Just like the true Hall of Famer he is.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Thursday's picks, betting odds and analysis

                              Double-Play Picks

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves (+210, 8.5)

The Dodgers look to be cruising to their fifth consecutive National League West title - they are the current favorites to win the World Series at 9/4, they hit a home run by acquiring Yu Darvish at the trade deadline and they have won 20 of their last 23 games.

Funny thing is, all three of those losses have come to the same team, a team you wouldn’t expect if you haven’t been playing close attention. That would be the Atlanta Braves.

Atlanta has played the Dodgers tough this year splitting their six meetings thus far and outscoring them 31-23 in the process. However, the Dodgers know this and will have revenge on their minds when they play the rubber match of their three-game set in Atlanta Thursday night.

Speaking of revenge, Dodgers starter Alex Wood will be looking for some in this matchup as well. Wood had allowed just 15 earned runs in his first 14 starts for the Dodgers this season, before the Braves (his former team) jumped all over him for seven earned runs on nine hits overs 4.2 innings.

The Dodgers lefty has struggled in his last two starts, but his overall numbers are outstanding at 12-1 with a 2.38 ERA and a 0.986 WHIP. On the road, he is 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA and a 0.917 WHIP. The Dodgers are also 10-3 against the runline in his last 13 starts.

Atlanta counters with a southpaw of their own in rookie Sean Newcomb. The 24-year-old got his career off to a good start, allowing just four earned runs in his first four starts. Since then, it has been more of a struggle. The Braves have lost his last five starts, while he has pitched to a 7.61 ERA with a WHIP of 1.860.

Expect the Dodgers to exact some revenge Thursday night.

                              Pick: Dodgers -1.5 (-145)

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Angels (-160, 9)

The Phillies and Angels meet Thursday night in Anaheim for the final game of their interleague series. The Halos dominated the first two games of the series as the Philadelphia offense has struggled against the Angels' mediocre pitching staff.

That mediocre Angels' pitching staff will run its best starter out to the mound tonight. Parker Bridwell may be new on the scene, but he has quickly established himself as the best arm in their rotation. The Angels are 7-1 in his eight career starts and he owns an ERA of 2.83. Bridwell has been especially stingy over his last four outings with a team win/loss of 4-0, an ERA of 1.69, and a WHIP of 0.90.

Philly will send out right-hander Jerad Eickhoff and he has proven over the last few weeks that he is capable of spinning a very good start and holding his opponents down on the score sheet. In four of his last five starts he has held the opposing team to two runs or less and his ERA over those five outings is a very solid 2.89.

Both clubs, of course, feature really bad offenses. The Angels rank last in the American League in almost every offensive category - most notably runs scored (456) and team OPS (.704). The Phillies rank second from the bottom in the National League in runs scored (422) and sit in the bottom five in every other offensive category.

Since this is an interleague matchup, the recent meetings go back a long way. Even so, it's worth noting that Under is 10-1-1 in the last 12 head-to-head meetings (dating back to 2003).

                              Pick: Under 9

                              Yesterday's Picks: 0-2
                              Season To Date: 103-94-10

                              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                              Streaking:
Sonny Gray, New York Yankees (6-5, 3.42 ERA, $-66)

Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline was highlighted by two big moves by two of baseball’s biggest franchises. Yu Darvish to the Dodgers and Sonny Gray to Yankees. The latter makes his first start in pinstripes today and if he can continue the pace he was on in Oakland, the Yankees will be dangerous.

Over his last five starts, Gray owns a 1.39 ERA and a WHIP of .8351.

Gray gets the ball in Cleveland against Corey Kluber in what could be a Game 1 playoff preview and the Yankees are +120 dogs.

                              Slumping:
Trevor Cahill, Kansas City Royals (4-3, 4.15 ERA, $525)

In one of the more under-the-radar, deadline moves the Kansas City Royals traded for relievers Brandon Maurer, Ryan Butcher and starter Trevor Cahill. Cahill makes his second start for the Royals and things didn’t go so well the first time. The Red Sox shelled the righty for five runs in four innings.

In his last two trips to the mound (one with Kansas City and one with San Diego), Cahill’s ERA is 11.74 with a WHIP of 2.7392. Not what you want to see in the first week of August heading into a playoff push.

Cahill and Royals are -130 home chalk against the Mariners.

                              Thursday's Top Trends

                              * The Cincinnati Reds are 8-0 in their last eight meetings with the Pirates in Pittsburgh. +150 today @ Pirates.
                              * The Baltimore Orioles are 8-0 in Chris Tillman's last eight starts vs. Detroit. -135 today vs. Tigers.
                              * The Cleveland Indians are 10-1 in their last 11 home games. -155 today vs. Yankees.
                              * The Tampa Bay Rays are 1-7 in Blake Snell's last eight starts. +140 today @ Astros.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

There is a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms in Colorado and Cleveland. The Rockies are hosting the New York Mets and thunderstorms are in the forecast for late in the afternoon and could impact the later innings. Jim Reynolds might be a little loose with the strike zone to get this game done before the storm rolls in. The opposite is the case in Cleveland where first pitch could get pushed because of rain and thunderstorms but they should be able to get this in as the weather should improve as the night progresses.

The forecast is calling for a 30-50 percent chance of rain in Minnesota and a 14-18 mile per hour wind going left to right across the diamond.

The most notable hitters wind today will be at AT&T Park in San Francisco where the Athletics are in town and will be greeted with a 12-14 mile per hour blowing to straight center field. The total is currently sitting at 8.5.

                              Ump Of The Day

Dan Iassogna will be calling balls and strikes today at SunTrust Park and that is interesting because the juggernaut Dodgers are in town. Iassogna is near the top of our Homer Umpire table at 13-4 (76.5 percent) for the season and 10 for the last 11. Adding to that streak, the Braves have won five of the last six games that Iassogna has been behind the plate.

That’s a bit of home bias and the Braves will need every bit of it.

The Braves are massive +210 home dogs against the major league leading Dodgers.
