    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

    — Brewers 9, Phillies 8— Milwaukee led this game 8-1 in the 7th inning, blew the lead, but ended their 6-game losing streak.

    — Indians 2, Toronto 1 (10)— Tribe’s first late-inning win (7th inning on) since May 23.

    — Astros 8, Orioles 4— Colin Moran fouled a ball off his face, left game; Marwin Gonzalez came off the bench and hit a 3-run homer.

    — Royals 7, White Sox 2— Chicago is 0-7 since the All-Star break.

    — I wonder how much it costs to have an advertisement on the Green Monster at Fenway Park for a year; has to be pretty steep.

    — Dodgers traded reliever Sergio Romo to Tampa Bay, which is in the thick of the AL Wild Card race.

Armadillo: Sunday's Den: Ranking the months of the year………..

    12) May— Slow month. Weather is getting better here in upstate New York, but it is still spring and there is a lot of rain (spring showers bring summer flowers, something like that). NHL, NBA playoffs are underway, as is baseball.

    11) February— College basketball and very little else, except the Super Bowl, Daytona 500 and cold, cruddy weather. At least it is the shortest month of the year.

    10) January— Just like February, except the NFL playoffs and college football title game are also in the mix. Golf starts up, so you can at least see warm people on TV.

When I was working, Martin Luther King Day was great for me; a Monday in January where I could sleep till noon. Nothing better than staying inside in January.

    9) April— If you like rain, this is your month here in the Northeast, but after a long winter, rain is OK. Baseball starts, which is good. NHL/NBA playoffs start up. Excellent week to hang out in Las Vegas and sip cool drinks by the pool, before the day’s baseball starts.

    8) August— I’m not a big racetrack guy; August around here means thoroughbred racing 25 miles north of here at Saratoga. It is a fun day, but lot of people trying to look rich, and thats not my thing. Exhibiton football is OK up to a point; solid baseball month.

    7) June— When I was a young person, this was the best month of the year, because school ended and the weather was tremendous.

    6) July— If you like basketball, you can choose which part of the month to go to Las Vegas to see either the NBA Summer League or AAU games later in the month. There are also really good AAU games at Disney in Florida at the end of the month, as summer recruiting goes to an end. I’ve learned a lot of basketball watching game after game in the summer.

    5) October— Baseball playoffs, NFL/college football, and lot of college basketball research, with the season starting in early November. As soon as the baseball season ends, it is time to delve back into hardwood mode and get ready for 4.5 months of college basketball.

Side note: Everyone should spend at least one Halloween in Las Vegas; it is…….interesting.

    4) September— NFL and college football start, pennant races in baseball, lot of solid action, and it is still summer weather. Since I’m not a kid or a teacher, I could care less that school starts in September. When I was a kid, September was WAY lower on this list.

    3) November— Tremendous overlap of college football/basketball begins; busiest time of year for this website. NFL games on Sundays, NBA/NHL are underway. Lot of action.

When I had a job, this was a great month; three days off: Election Day, Veterans Day ad of course, Thanksgiving. Never underestimate a month with three holidays in it.

    2) December— The best week to visit Las Vegas is the week before Christmas; room rates are way cheaper, there are ton of games to wager on that week, and if you don’t want to talk to anyone, you don’t have to, since most of the people in Las Vegas that week are foreigners.

    1) March— My favorite month of the year. Meaningful college basketball for the first three weeks of the month, winter is ending, and spring training baseball every day on TV, to fill the gaps if basketball is off that day.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Sunday's picks, betting odds and analysis

              Double-Play Picks

Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies (-115, 12.5)

The Pirates and Rockies wrap up their three-game weekend series this afternoon in Denver. The teams have split the first two games with the home team cashing a 7-3 victory Saturday.

The Pirates will send "Mr. Consistency" Ivan Nova to the mound Sunday at Coors Field. What do you expect each time Nova climbs the hill? 6-7 innings of work, 2-4 earned runs allowed, a low walk total, and an Under result. In fact, Under has cashed in his last seven starts.

The Rockies will counter with rookie left-hander Kyle Freeland. What has Freeland been up to? Well, in his last start he tossed 8.1 innings of no-hit baseball at home against the White Sox. He was moved to the bullpen after that start in order to preserve his innings but the desperate Rockies' rotation needs him today. Freeland has been tremendous pitching at Coors Field this season with an ERA of 3.23 and an average runs against of 3.11 in nine home starts. Based on those numbers, it's not really a huge surprise that the Under has cashed in all nine of Freeland's home starts in his career.

              Pick: Under 12.5

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (-160, 8)

This three-game weekend series at Wrigley Field between the Cubs and Cardinals certainly has a playoff feel as both teams have their sights set on the National League Central division leading Milwaukee Brewers. The first two games were split as both winning results were orchestrated with eighth inning rallies.

The finale on Sunday Night Baseball will feature the home debut of the Cubs' newly acquired weapon, left-hander Jose Quintana. All Quintana did in his first start as a Cub, on the road in Baltimore, was toss seven shutout innings with only three hits allowed and 12 strikeouts. The adrenaline will be amped up tonight as he gets thrown right into one of baseball's best rivalries.

Quintana has had great success at Wrigley Field in his career with a 1.59 ERA in two career starts as a member of the White Sox.

The Cardinals will counter with right-hander Michael Wacha and he has been at his best over his last four starts with a team win/loss record of 4-0, an ERA of 1.01, and a WHIP of 0.8625. His last start was a complete game, three-hit shutout on the road against the Mets and he hasn't allowed a home run in his last five outings.

Wacha does have a bit of a troubling history at Wrigley Field, but he will be aided today by a slight pitcher's breeze blowing in from left-center field (5-8 MPH) and a very pitcher friendly home plate umpire in Dan Bellino (Under 12-3 this season).

              Pick: Under 8

              Yesterday's Picks: 1-1
              Season To Date: 95-83-8

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (15-2, 2.07 ERA, $1360)

Clayton Kershaw is pretty good. What can we say about him that hasn't already been said? If the value wasn't sucked out of his start today he would have definitely been one of our Double-Play Picks, but -165 to -180 on a runline is a bit much for our liking.

Kershaw leads all MLB starting pitchers in betting money earned with $1360 through 20 starts (team win/loss 18-2) and he has been at the top of his game over his last five outings with only two earned runs allowed (0.50 ERA), a WHIP of 0.778, and 51 strikeouts to go along with only six walks.

Kershaw and the Dodgers are massive home chalk today at -400 against the Braves.

              Slumping:
Derek Holland, Chicago White Sox (5-9, 5.18 ERA, $-342)

Derek Holland of the White Sox is our stinky starter of the day for this Sunday. The Sox have only won two of his starts (2-10) since his Star Wars Day (May 4) win versus the Royals, and the White Sox have lost his last five overall.

Holland has been especially bad over his last three outings with an ERA of 10.20, a WHIP of 1.67, an opponent's on base percentage of .375, and only 11 strikeouts.

Holland and the White Sox are +120 underdogs today in Kansas City against the Royals.

              Sunday's Top Trends

              * The Cincinnati Reds are 1-10 in their last 11 vs. National League East. -120 today vs. Marlins.
              * Over is 7-0 in Dylan Bundy's last seven starts overall. Astros/Orioles Total: 10.5.
              * Over is 9-0 in Derek Holland's last nine road starts. White Sox/Royals Total: 11.
              * The Washington Nationals are 25-3 in Stephen Strasburg's last 28 Sunday starts. Nationals/Diamondbacks Total: 8.5.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms late this afternoon in both Cincinnati and Baltimore. The Reds will be taking on the Marlins and hopefully they get that one wrapped up quickly before the storms roll in. The O's will be hosting the Astros this afternoon and some mess should start rolling in between 4:00 and 5:00 local time.

There is a bit of a hitter's wind in the forecast this afternoon in Minneapolis where the Twins will be battling the Tigers with a 12-15 mile per hour wind blowing out to right field. The total for that one is set at 10.5.

Sunday Night Baseball will be at Wrigley Field in Chicago tonight and, good news for the pitchers, there will be 5-8 mile per hour wind blowing in from left center field. The total tonight for the divisional battle between the Cubs and Cardinals opened at 8.

              Ump Of The Day

Pat Hoberg will be working the plate this afternoon in Seattle where the Mariners will, once again, take on the powerful New York Yankees. Hoberg is tied with Manny Gonzalez as the top Over umpire in Major League Baseball thus far in 2017 with an Over record of 12-3.

Hoberg owns a very low strike percentage at 62.6 and there has been an average of 3.56 home runs per game in his 16 games behind the plate this season.

The total this afternoon in Seattle is currently set at 9.5.
