    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

    — 76ers’ rookie Markelle Fultz suffered a high ankle sprain Saturday night and is probably done for the summer.

    — Celtics 86, Lakers 81— Laker Nation can rest easy; Lonzo Ball had a triple double.

    — Raptors are trading DeMarre Carroll to Brooklyn for Justin Hamilton, a salary dump by Toronto.

    — Dodgers 5, Royals 4 (10)— Los Angeles is 27-8 since June 1.

    — Padres 2, Phillies 1— Philly is 28-58; 23 of their 58 losses are by one run.

    — Pirates 4, Cubs 2— Chicago is 4.5 games out of first place, 6.5 games out of Wild Card.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff for a summer day……

    13) Gregg Popovich is 1,316-612 as an NBA head coach with five championships, but his first year as a head coach at any level was in 1979-80 at Pomona-Pitzer, a D-III school in California.

That team went 2-22. Long way from there to today.

    12) Clippers-Lakers summer league game Friday night in UNLV’s arena had a huge crowd- looked liked the whole lower bowl was full, which would make it a crowd of around 8,000 people.

Lakers-Celtics game Saturday night was a complete sellout at Thomas & Mack Center. Adam Silver has to like that, but I bet NBA people are surprised at how popular summer league has become.

$30 a pop for the whole day is a good deal. Can watch four games in an air conditioned arena.

    11) It isn’t good when your favorite college basketball team has two assistant coaches resign in July; thats whats happening at Western Kentucky. One of the assistant coaches is the godfather of their best recruit, Mitchell Robinson.

    10) Twins manager Paul Molitor played his last big league game in 1998; Bartolo Colon pitched for the other team that day. Here, in 2017, Molitor will be managing Colon.

    9) Biggest division lead at the All-Star break since 1910; 2001 Seattle Mariners led Oakland by 19 games. 1986 Mets led Montreal by 13.5 games.

This year’s Astros have a 16-game lead in the AL West.

    8) Most career home runs without a grand slam:
    190— Andrew McCutchen, Glenn Davis
    176— Ron Kittle

    7) Andy from New York points out that the Cubs are the only MLB team who have zero stolen bases from the leadoff position in the batting order.

    6) Jim “Bones” Mackay, who caddied for Phil Mickelson for 25 years, is going to be an on-course golf commentator for NBC/Golf Channel. His first assignment is the British Open.

    5) NBA doings:
    — Indiana Pacers gave Brian Bogdanovic $21M for two years.
    — Cavaliers gave Jeff Green $2.3M for one season.
    — Celtics traded Avery Bradley to Detroit for Marcus Morris.
    — Warriors gave Zaza Pachulia $3.5M for one year.
    — Minnesota gives Jamal Crawford $8.9M for two years.

    4) Tim Hardaway Jr is going to sign a $71M contract with the Knicks; Atlanta declined to match the offer sheet. Tim Hardaway Sr, made $46M in his whole career, and he was a much better player than his son. Go figure.

    3) James Harden got a 4-year contract extension from the Rockets, supposedly worth $228M, which is $57M a year, and that is eye-popping.

    2) Canadian team beat the Americans 99-87 in semi-finals of the U19 championship in Egypt. Canada will face Italy in the finals.

    1) NBA Summer League story: I was at UNLV a few years ago, watching the summer league— you can bet on these games, but you have to be careful.

I’m sitting there and this really big guy, likely a bodybuilder, sits in front of me, drink in hand. He is explaining fairly loudly to the guy next to him how he is betting on the Timberwolves, who had won their game the day before by 20+ points. The bodybuilder was confident in a Minnesota win.

    One small problem.

Some teams don’t play the same set of guys every game. Timberwolves had 18 guys on their roster; nine had played the day before in the big win, the other nine were playing this game.

Minnesota’s second group wasn’t very good- they got trounced. The big guy lost his money, wasn’t happy about it.

How to handicap the second half of the MLB betting season

The second half of the season throws some curveballs when it comes to how MLB bettors handicap the daily odds. A set of unique factors come into play in the final two and half months of the regular season slate, and bettors should be mindful to adjust.

The grueling seven-month voyage that is the MLB betting season comes to port briefly during the All-Star Game, giving baseball teams and baseball bettors a quick breathier before hitting the home stretch of the schedule.

The second half of the season throws some curveballs when it comes to how MLB bettors handicap the daily odds. A set of unique factors come into play in the final two and half months of the regular season slate, and bettors should be mindful to adjust.

Here are some simple tips and tactics for capping the second half of the MLB calendar:

              Watch for wear

As the temperatures get turned up in July, August and September, we also see more wear and tear of pitching staffs across the majors. Baseball bettors will want to take the All-Star hiatus to check up on which teams could be in trouble, as it pertains to innings pitched and starter depth.

If one or two starters go down, or even struggle on the mound, that forces a shuffle of the pitching staff and more reliance on the bullpen to pick up the slack. This can lead to issues on that side of the plate, leaving teams thin until September call-ups arrive.

              Ride the Over

In connection with the wearing down of pitchers mentioned above, is the uptick in totals trends – primarily Over trends – in the second half of the season.

Teams going through issues on the mound tend to give up more runs and have a tough time plugging those leaks before September. That puts more value into following Over trends in July and August. The betting markets are also slower to react to totals trends, since they don’t get the mainstream media coverage that an extended winning or losing streak would garner, and hold their betting value longer.

              Industry shift

Once the NBA and NHL playoffs conclude, baseball pretty much has the attention of the sports betting world for June and July – that means the lines are sharp and the action is heavy. But as the NFL kicks off its preseason campaign in August and with college football coming at the end of that month as well, the industry drastically shifts its attention and efforts.

The focus on baseball dies down, from both books and bettors, which means value betting on certain stats and trends has a longer shelf life. Die-hard MLB bettors committed to the sport, even when football rolls into town, will have an advantage as they are first to sniff out the best bets on the board.

              Injuries and returning players

The marathon MLB season starts to take its toll on players after the break with a pandemic of ailments across the big leagues. Injuries to starting pitchers are perhaps the most destructive to a club’s success but don’t underestimate the loss of a key lineup contributor as well. They can upend the offensive production as well as leave gaps in the field. Take a deep dive into their contributions and advanced stats, like WAR (Wins Above Replacement), which should give you an indication of how far a team could slip without them.

On the flip side of this, players who suffered an injury before the break have had some extra time to heal up and could be coming back for the home stretch of the schedule. Those returning talents can give depth to a rotation, boost a bullpen, or spark a lineup with their bat. Make sure you keep a close eye on returning players and how they’re impacting the outcomes in the first few games back on the diamond.

              Motivation and moves

As the fall closes in, baseball bettors will have a clear idea as to which MLB clubs are contenders and which ones don’t have a shot at October. Teams in contention could provide more bang for your betting buck, as they fight to make the postseason cut, while those with no hope of making the playoffs could start looking ahead to next season. Those teams could start working younger players into games, trying to build experience and gauge their roster for the following year. Always be mindful of the standings and a team’s situation each time out.

Going hand-in-hand with this is player movement, especially around the trade deadline. Those teams aiming for a postseason spot will make some moves to bolster their roster and fill any gaps they have, and betting on “buyers” in the second half of the schedule is never a bad idea. However, you will also have teams calling it quits on the current season and selling off their top talents to the highest bidder, stacking assets for the future. Beware those “sellers” in the final months of the summer.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Sunday's picks, betting odds and analysis

                Double-Play Picks

Houston Astros at Toronto Blue Jays (-105, 9.5)

The mighty Houston Astros have dropped two out of the first three games of this four-game series in Toronto heading into the All-Star break. Despite their two losses they still own a stellar 32-11 record on the road in 2017 - by far the best road record in baseball.

Brad Peacock will get the start for the Astros. He is having a great season with a 6-1 record and an overall ERA of 2.91. His ERA is slightly higher at 3.18 on the road in four starts away from Tropicana Field and in three afternoon starts his ERA is 3.98 with a rather alarming 13 walks. Someone isn't exactly an early riser.

J.A. Happ climbs the bump for the Blue Jays at home today and he has struggled at Rogers Centre with a 4.15 ERA in his five starts "North of the Border" this season. Happ has been pitching really well lately for the Jays, but his best results have been coming on the road against mediocre teams. Today is at home against a very good team.

The Astros LOVE to hit in games started by Peacock, averaging an astonishing 10.75 runs per game in his road starts this season and the average combined total runs for both teams in those games is 14.50.

Houston has yet to play an Under since the calendar turned to July and Over is 7-0-1 in their last eight games overall. The Jays have been a little bit more inconsistent when it comes to cashing Overs, but the Over is 3-0-1 in their last four overall and 3-0-1 in their last four games against the 'Stros. It looks like Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson are heating up for Toronto (just in time to cool off during the break) and when those two are rolling the Jays still have one of the most dangerous batting lineups in all of baseball.

                Pick: Over 9.5

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians (-210, 8)

The Cleveland Indians send their ace, Corey Kluber, to the mound Sunday night in an attempt to close out the first half of the season with a very uplifting sweep over a division rival. The Tribe has dominated the Detroit Tigers all weekend, and for most of the season for that matter, winning the first two games of this weekend series by an average of 6.5 runs per game.

Kluber has been dynamic for most 2017, but especially over his last four starts. In his last four trips to the hill his ERA is a minuscule 0.56 and his WHIP is perhaps more impressive at 0.5625. He's only allowed one home run since the beginning of June (seven starts) so he appears to have everything figured out at the moment. He has also struck out 10 or more opposing hitters in five straight appearances.

Dating back to the beginning of the 2016 season, the Indians have won five of Kluber's six starts against the Tigers with an average margin of victory of 6.0 in those five wins.

The Tigers will run their young stud Michael Fulmer out to the hill to close out the first half. Much like the Tigers' season overall, Fulmer has been inconsistent in 2017. Don't get us wrong, any team in baseball would love to have him as a part of their rotation, but life as a Detroit Tiger can sometimes be rough as a starting pitcher. Despite a solid 2.16 ERA on the road this season, the Tigers have only won three of his seven starts away from Comerica Park.

In four career starts against the Indians, Fulmer owns a team win/loss of 2-2 (1-2 on the road), an ERA of 6.98, and a WHIP of 1.9655. Not great numbers and they speak to Fulmer having not quite put everything together.

When digging through past results we uncovered a very interesting statistical fact. Since May 23 the Cleveland Indians have won 23 baseball games (23-19) and during that span each and every one of their wins has covered -1.5. They have not posted a one-run victory since an 8-7 win in Cincinnati against the Reds on May 23. When they win, they win convincingly.

                Pick: Indians -1.5 (+100)

                Yesterday's Picks: 0-2
                Season To Date: 85-75-8

                Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                Streaking:
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (13-2, 2.19 ERA, $1160)

Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw is pretty good. He owns a team win/loss record of 16-2 this season and he leads all major league starters in Starter Money at $1160.

Has his recent form been good? Of course. Over his last three outings he owns an ERA of 0.00 with a WHIP of 0.70 and the Dodgers have won his last 12 starts overall.

Kershaw and the Dodgers are big chalk at home today, as usual, against the visiting Kansas City Royals at -300.

                Slumping:
                Kyle Freeland, Colorado Rockies (8-7, 4.09, $361)

Rockies' rookie left-hander Kyle Freeland got off to a tremendous start to his major league career but he has really cooled off as the weather has warmed up. In Freeland's last three starts he is 0-3 with a 7.27 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP. He simply is not missing bats with only six strikeouts to go along with six walks during those last 17.1 innings of work.

Freeland and the Rox are -120 favorites at home today against the Chicago White Sox. The moneyline opened at -150 and has been dropping all day.

                Sunday's Top Trends:

                * Over is 12-2 in the Tampa Bay Rays' last 14 home games. Red Sox/Rays Total: 7.5.
                * The Atlanta Braves are 5-21 in the last 26 meetings with the Nationals in Washington. +160 today @ Nats.
                * The Los Angeles Dodgers are 44-9 in Clayton Kershaw's last 53 starts. -300 today vs. Royals.
                * The Cincinnati Reds are 4-17 in their last 21 vs. National League West. +150 today @ Diamondbacks.

Weather To Keep An Eye On:

Not too much precipitation to worry about in the weather forecast today. There are slight chances of thunderstorms developing in Minneapolis for this afternoon's game between the Twins and the Baltimore Orioles and also in Arlington where the Rangers will host the Los Angeles Angels.

At Wrigley Field in Chicago there will be an 8-10 mile per hour wind blowing straight out to center field this afternoon. The Cubs are taking on the Pirates and the total is set at 9.

                Ump Of The Day:

Tom Hallion will be calling balls and strikes today in San Francisco for this afternoon's game between the Giants and the visiting Miami Marlins. Hallion is the No. 5 Over umpire in Major League Baseball thus far in 2017 at 12-5.

He owns a very low strike percentage of 62.78. Combine that with the juiced balls and that fully explains his current Over trend.

The total today in San Francisco is currently set at 9.
