    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

    — Mookie Betts knocked in 8 runs Sunday, tied for most-ever in one game by a leadoff hitter.

    — Houston Rockets will have three players making $20M+ next season.

    — Kyle Schwarber at AAA Iowa: 10-26 with four homers. He’ll be back soon.

    — Detroit 103, New York 78— Knicks are terrible, even in summer league.

    — Vince Carter was a TV analyst yesterday on NBA TV; he had zero idea that Canyon Barry shoots his foul shots underhanded. Way to be prepared.

    — Arizona State got a commitment from the best basketball-playing 9th grader in the country. Not sure why a kid would commit that early, but Kyree Walker did.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

    13) Colorado Rockies lost eight games in a row recently and the bandwagon was quickly emptying. Baseball season is very long, though; here is what I mean…….

2012 Giants went 2-7 from June 29-July 8; they won the World Series
2013 Cardinals went 0-7 from July 26-31; they lost the World Series.
2014 Giants went 2-9 from June 23-July 4; they won the World Series.
2015 Mets went 0-7 from June 17-24; they lost the World Series.
2016 Cubs went 1-9 from June 30-July 9; they won the World Series.

Every team hits a rough patch during the season, even the really good ones.

    12) Major league teams are 76-228 this season when they score two runs in a game; Cardinals are 7-2 at home when they score two runs.

    11) Miami Marlins said Brewers’ PH Jonathan Villar had too much pine tar on his bat, so when Marcell Ozuna batted for the Marlins, Milwaukee returned the favor and had two of his bats taken out of play for the same reason. Ozuna then used one of Giancarlo Stanton’s bats and hit a homer to give the Marlins a 7-3 lead. Weird gamesmanship.

    10) Odd Fact of the Day: In the last 40 years, only twice has a team broken a losing streak of 8+ games on its manager’s birthday. Both times, in 2008 and 2017, the manager was Bud Black.

    9) Brewers’ pitcher Zach Davies got 30 called strikes from plate umpire Joe West Saturday, which is really unusual; only third time this season a pitcher got 30 called strikes in one game. Dallas Keuchel, Alex Cobb were the other two pitchers.

    8) Odd to see the Michigan Wolverines’ football team ranked #127 out of 130 I-A team in terms of experience this season- they only have one starter back on defense.

    7) Random All-Star Game fact: Rosters have been reduced from 34 to 32 players this year and every team has be represented.

    6) Alex Rodriguez hit six home runs on his birthday, more than any major leaguer hit on their birthday.

    5) Chris Paul talked free agent PJ Tucker into choosing Houston over Toronto; he took $32M for four years from the Rockets, turned down $33M for three years from Toronto.

You do the math. Tucker must like hanging around with Chris Paul..

    4) Padres called up reliever Kevin Quackenbush from AAA Sunday, the 5th time they’ve called him up this season. Unfortunately, he’s also been sent out five times.

    3) Mets-Nationals have an 11am game on the 4th of July (Tuesday). Lot of stuff going on in the nation’s capital, so they play the game earlier in the day.

    2) NBA happenings:
    — Andre Iguodala gets three years, $48M to stay with the Warriors
    — Kyle Korner gets three years, $22M to keep shooting jumpers in Cleveland.
    — Jodie Meeks gets $7M for two years from Washington
    — Taj Gibson gets two years, $28M from Minnesota
    — Serge Ibaka gets three years, $65M to stay in Toronto; Kyle Lowry gets three years, $100M to stay with the Raptors.
    — Denver Nuggets sign Paul Millsap; three years, $90M. Good day for the Millsaps.

    1) If you watch Ray Donovan on Showtime, the new season starts August 6, and Susan Sarandon is joining the cast, which is excellent news.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Monday's picks, betting odds and analysis

              Double-Play Picks

Miami Marlins at St. Louis Cardinals (-145, 9.5)

The Miami Marlins touch down in St. Louis today for the opening game of their four-game series against the scrappy Cardinals.

The Marlins will send horribly unlucky left-hander Jeff Locke to the mound this evening. Miami is averaging only 2.17 runs per game during Locke's six starts this season and, not surprisingly, the Marlins have lost all six of those ball games. Locke has struggled away from home with an ERA of 5.79 and a WHIP of 1.64 in three previous road starts.

Miami's offensive struggles when Locke takes the hill will likely continue today with the Cardinals running Adam Wainwright out to the mound. "Waino" is 5-1 at Busch Stadium this season with a stellar 2.64 ERA and a WHIP of 1.30.

The Cards swept a three-game series in Miami earlier in 2017, so they have a good feel for what it takes to hook the fish. The Cardinals are also 7-2 in Wainwright's nine career starts against the Marlins (4-1 at home).

St. Louis has won 14 of their last 16 games versus National League East opponents, and after getting dominated by Max Scherzer on Sunday Night Baseball last night (a winning pick for us) facing Jeff Locke will feel like a relaxing vacation.

              Pick: Cardinals -145

Los Angeles Angels at Minnesota Twins (-120, 10)

The Minnesota Twins return home today following their largely unsuccessful 11-game road trip and will welcome the Los Angeles Angels to town for a three-game series.

This game features a pair of struggling offenses and a pair of starting pitchers who have shown really good form as of late...hmmm.

The Angels come in having cashed four straight road Unders and over their last six games they are averaging only 2.00 runs per contest. The Twins are also struggling to score runs having only plated an average of 4.125 runs per game over their last eight, and that number is inflated due to a 10-run outburst Saturday in Kansas City - take that game out of the equation and they are only averaging 2.71 runs per game during that span.

On the mound, the Angels are going with Alex Meyer this evening and he has been very good over his last three starts with an ERA of 2.93, WHIP of 1.04, and an opponent's on base percentage of a minuscule .258.

Abalberto Meija will get the ball for the Twins and he has put up two straight shutout performances, going 5.2 shutout innings against the Boston Red Sox and 5.0 shutout innings against the Cleveland Indians. Mejia also started earlier this season against the Angels in Anaheim and put in a stellar six innings of work in an eventual 4-2 win by the Twins.

The Twins bullpen (27th in MLB) will always worry us on an Under pick, but the Angels' lack of offensive production (25th in MLB) should nullify the bullpen factor.

              Pick: Under 10

              Yesterday's Picks: 2-0
              Season To Date: 81-69-7

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Aaron Nola, Philadelphia Phillies (5-5, 4.13 ERA, $-5)

When the Phillies finally get this rebuild turned around, Aaron Nola will be looked upon to be a central figure in their starting rotation. He has certainly looked the part during his last two outings.

He has won his last two starts, in Seattle against the Mariners and at home against the Cardinals, and he owns a 1.88 ERA in those 14.1 innings of work with only 9 hits allowed.

If you think he can keep this momentum rolling he and the Phillies are available as a pick 'em at home against Ivan Nova and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

              Slumping:
Wade Miley, Baltimore Orioles (3-6, 4.54 ERA, $-35)

It's a Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher. In theory, we could simply slot the O's daily starter in as our Slumping Starting Pitcher every day that Dylan Bundy isn't scheduled to be on the mound.

Wade Miley has been horrible for a long time, but especially so over his last five starts. His ERA in his last five outings is 9.58, his WHIP is 2.32, and he has allowed 14 walks during that span. Not good.

Miley gets the start this afternoon in Milwaukee against the Brewers and this game is currently a pick 'em.

              Monday's Top Trends

              * Over is 8-1 in the Baltimore Orioles' last nine interleague games. O's/Brewers Total: 10.
              * Under is 8-0 in the Pittsburgh Pirates' last eight games following a loss. Bucs/Phillies Total: 8.5.
              * The Cincinnati Reds are 5-21 in their last 26 road games. +155 today @ Rockies.
              * The St. Louis Cardinals are 14-2 in their last 16 vs. National League East. -145 today vs. Marlins.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

There is a chance of some thunderstorms developing late this afternoon in New York but they should clear away in time for first pitch this evening for the game between the Yankees and Blue Jays.

There is a rare pitcher's wind in the MLB forecast this evening. The Red Sox and Rangers will be facing a 10-12 mile per hour wind blowing in from right-center field tonight in Arlington. The total is currently set at 11.

The A's and White Sox will enjoy a 15 mile per hour wind blowing out to right field tonight at Oakland Coliseum and the total for that game is set at 8.5.
