    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

    — Indians 5, Orioles 1— Carrasco tossed six shutout innings for the Tribe.

    — Toronto 7, Texas 5— Blue Jays scored six runs in the first inning.

    — Braves 5, Giants 3– Kemp hit a walk-off HR in extra innings, just after midnight.

    — Twins 4, White Sox 2— Berrios is 7-1, 2.67 for Minnesota.

    — Cardinals 7, Phillies 6 (10)- -Philly led 5-1 in sixth inning.

    — New Orleans Pelicans traded G Tim Frazier to the Washington Wizards for the No. 52 pick in tonight’s NBA Draft.

    **********

Armadillo:Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

    13) Miami 2, Washington 1— Nationals are way ahead in a weak NL East, but this was a tough loss. Max Scherzer had a no-hitter in the 8th inning, but gave up an infield hit that bounced off his glove, then Trea Turner bounced a throw to 1B for an error that kept the inning alive, before a wild pitch tied the game 1-1.

Giancarlo Stanton hit Scherzer’s 119th pitch for a single to left that drove in the winning run.

Scherzer and Nolan Ryan are now only two pitchers in history to go 8 IP, not give up an earned run, give up two or less hits, strike out at least 11 and lose the game.

Game ended when Adam Lind was called out on strikes on a pitch that was a good six inches outside. Home plate ump Dana Demuth should be fined for that— I could care less who won the game, but to end the game on a pitch that bad was disgraceful.

    12) Odd news note #1 of the day: Police in Winfield, WV say a man found asleep in a stranger’s home has been charged with burglary.

A homeowner called police dispatchers after finding a glass door broken in his house and a stranger asleep in his bed. The napping trespasser was charged with burglary and destruction of property.

    11) Surprising stat: Angels are 11-10 since Mike Trout got hurt; Braves are 16-17 since Freddie Freeman got hurt. Would’ve thought both teams would’ve done much worse.

    10) Matt Adams has been so productive for the Braves that when Freeman comes back from his wrist injury, he may give third base a try, to keep both bats in the lineup.

    9) Justin Verlander apparently thinks Major League Baseball has changed the actual baseball that is used in games- he says since the 2015 All-Star break, baseballs used are harder and also the seams are different, which has resulted in batted balls traveling farther.

As soon as I typed this sentence, Ian Happ hit a home run at Wrigley. Maybe Verlander is right.

    8) Odd news note #2 of the day: A couple has gotten back nearly $100,000 they mistakenly donated to Goodwill Industries in Ohio.

Two Goodwill employees in Zanesville, OH initially thought it was play money or counterfeit cash after finding $97,000 in hundred dollar bills in a duffel bag inside a box of clothes last week. The duffel bag also contained legal documents and the last will and testament for the couple. Oy.

    7) Best cumulative scores at the Hartford Open the last five years: Bubba Watson -52, Marc Leishman -43, Chris Stroud -41, Charley Hoffman -35. Ryan Moore -32

    6) When Dwight Howard plays for the Charlotte Hornets this fall, they’ll be his 5th team in the last seven years.

    5) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Browns’ QB Brock Osweiler:

“The best part is I’m getting coached hard on my fundamentals. And I believe firmly that when your fundamentals and your feet are right as a quarterback, you’re going to make great decisions and you’re going to throw accurate footballs.

I think that’s something that slid last season. I’m not going to go into great detail on that, but they did. My fundamentals slid, and because of that, you saw some poor decisions and some poor throws. If you go back to 2015, I feel like my fundamentals were pretty tight.”

Coaches in Houston, Osweiler’s last stop, should just love that quote.

    4) San Diego Padres CF Franchy Cordero found out the hard way yesterday that there is a brick wall underneath all that ivy on the outfield fences at Wrigley Field. He caught the ball on the warning track, then got a face full of ivy and ran into that brick wall that has zero give to it. Terrific catch.

Wind must’ve been blowing in, since Contreras did a bat flip when hit the ball, thinking it would wind up in the bleachers.

    3) Golf Channel and NBC Sports will show every shot of the British Open, which means you have to get up pretty darn early if you want to watch it all.

Couple years ago, I was in Las Vegas during the British Open; they had the start of the golf on at one of the bars, while at the same time, the Diamondbacks’ game was in the 13th inning, so I was watching Wednesday night baseball and Thursday morning golf at the same time. Muy bueno.

    2) Quote of the Day, part 3, from Kansas’ Josh Jackson, who declined to work out for the Celtics after they traded down into the #3 slot:

“They did a little bit of moving around with their pick. I felt like they made it pretty clear who they were going to draft with the No. 1 pick, so I didn’t really feel like it was worth either of our times for me to work out with them. But then when they, you know, did the flip and went to No. 3, by then it was too late.”

    1) Mike Krzyzewski came out again in favor of high school players being eligible for the NBA Draft; the baseball rule makes sense— here is who is eligible for the baseball draft:

•- High school players, if they have graduated from high school and have not yet attended college or junior college.

•- College players, from four-year colleges who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old. (So college players play three years before they can be drafted)

•- Junior college players, regardless of how many years of school they have completed

Always consider the home plate umpire when betting MLB totals

In 2017, the Under is a sterling 11-2 with Barksdale behind home plate, with those 13 contests averaging a grand total of just 7.36 runs per game.

On April 18 of this year, two gas cans masquerading as starting pitchers who operate under the names of Matt Cain and Jason Hammel squared off against one another in Kansas City in a 2014 World Series rematch between the Giants and Royals. Hammel closed as a razor-thin -113 favorite over Cain, but more importantly, the total for this showdown closed with a lofty Over/Under of 9.5 runs, which is significant for reasons you are about to discover.

Through the first 35 games of the 2017 season, this was the only Kansas City matchup that featured a total exceeding 9.0 runs. Additionally, this was just the second San Francisco contest through the club’s initial 16 outings that eclipsed a 9.0-run total. If nothing else, the bookmakers and early bettors were sending up a flare: Matt Cain? Jason Hammel? We better brace for some early fireworks in Kansas City.

But when the sun finally set in the ever-tranquil Midwest on that late April evening, the Giants had squeezed out a shockingly uneventful 2-1 victory.

So as it pertains to the total, what in the hell happened?

Well, as in virtually all cases as it pertains to Major League Baseball, a variety of factors converged in Kansas City on April 18 to help produce a grand total of just three runs in a game that closed with a total of 9.5.

And one of those factors just so happened to be home plate umpire Lance Barksdale.

A native of Brookhaven, Mississippi, the 50-year-old Barksdale has been umpiring in both the American and National Leagues since 2000. But as it pertains to both this specific article and that aforementioned matchup between the Royals and Giants, the significance of having Barksdale behind the dish is more than worth studying because of one very simple reason:

In 2017 alone, the Under is a sterling 11-2 with Barksdale behind home plate, with those 13 contests averaging a grand total of just 7.36 runs per game. For those keeping score at home, only four umpires who have officiated more than seven games this season have produced a lower average total than Barksdale.

For those who know where to look (HEY, CLICK HERE AND YOU TOO CAN STUDY UMPIRE BETTING TRENDS!), this Barksdale information shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as the under went 98-78 (.556) from 2010-2015 with the Mississippi native behind the dish. But the last two seasons have seen a sharp uptick in Barksdale’s average total strikeouts per game (15.8 in 2016, second-highest since 2010, 16.6 in 2017, highest since 2010) as well as his Under percentage (30-13 entering Thursday night, good for an Under winning percentage of .697).

The moral of the story here is a simple one: If you want to gain an edge as it pertains to MLB wagering, you can afford to leave no stone unturned. And that means each game you consider wagering requires a deep dive into the man behind the mask.

The good news is that we at *********** have you - how do I say this delicately - covered, as all you need to do is hover your mouse over the “MLB” tab above and then scroll to the right side where it says, “Umpires.”

But before we bid you adieu and goodbye for the weekend, here’s a rundown of some of the key umpiring trends that have developed so far during the 2017 season:

MLB Daily Line Drive: Thursday's Picks, Betting Odds and Analysis

                  Double-Play Picks

Toronto Blue Jays at Texas Rangers (+125, 10.5)

The Toronto Blue Jays got off to the worst start in franchise history this season starting the year 6-17, but they’ve managed to claw their way back to .500. Well, almost. Toronto will try to reach the .500 mark for the ninth time this season (the sixth time since the start of June) and win a series in Texas when they take on the Rangers Thursday afternoon.

Toronto has taken two of the first three games off the Rangers after Wednesday night’s 7-5 win and will try get over the hump and get back to .500. Now, 0-6 in June in this situation isn’t good, but there will be one big difference for the Blue Jays this time around, Marcus Stroman.

This will the first time Stroman takes the mound with a chance to get his team back to .500 and most people know by now, how intense a competitor ‘Stro is, so he’ll probably be relishing this opportunity.

What people may not know is how valuable Stroman has been to the Jays this season. He is 7-3, with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.252 WHIP, with 10 quality starts in 14 outings. He also ranks seventh in the majors in WAR among qualified starting pitchers. Stroman has been even better on the road this season, going 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA.

Meanwhile the Rangers counter with southpaw Martin Perez. The 26-year-old lefty is 3-6 this season with a 4.72 ERA and a 1.638 WHIP. At home he is 3-4 with a 5.01 ERA and a 1.649 WHIP in nine starts.

Additionally, Perez is 0-5 in his last five starts versus AL East opponents, while the Blue Jays are 7-1 in their last eight against the Rangers. There’s no way they go 0-9 when going for .500, right?

                  Pick: Blue Jays -135

Cleveland Indians at Baltimore Orioles (+105, 10.5)

We’ve been talking about this series for much of the past week, specifically the Orioles’ terrible run of allowing five runs or more in a game, which reached an unfathomable 18 games after last night’s 5-1 loss to the Indians.

The final game of their four-game set goes Thursday night in Baltimore and the Orioles aren’t exactly sending the hottest guy to the mound (see slumping pitchers below) if they hope to end that dubious streak.

Left-hander Wade Miley gets the call for the Orioles and Miley to say the least, has struggled. He an ERA of 12.66 in his last three starts. 12.66. Ouch.

He gets to face a Cleveland lineup that is not only hot, but one that mashes left-handed pitching. They are scoring 7.1 runs per game in their last 10 games and rank second in the MLB in runs scored of lefties and first in home runs off lefties.

Cleveland counters with Mike Clevinger (3.89 ERA) who has been solid, but doesn’t consistently go deep into ball games and manager Terry Francona admitted this week he is over-using Andrew Miller, who pitched two innings last night.

                  The streak continues.

                  Pick: Over 10.5

Yesterday's Picks: 2-0 (6-0 last three days & 10-2 over the last six)
                  Season To Date: 72-56-7

                  Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                  Streaking:
Carlos Martinez, St. Louis Cardinals (6-5, 2.86 ERA, $-9)

Carlos Martinez gets the ball this afternoon for the Saint Louis Cardinals and that is terrible news for the Philadelphia Phillies. The last time ‘Little Pedro’ got the start against the Phillies he tossed a complete game shut out, allowing four hits, 11 punch outs, one walk and averaged a tidy 11.9 pitches per inning.

The Cardinals ace has been dealing for weeks tossing 10 quality starts in his last 11 appearances. In his last two starts he has been dominating throwing 15 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out 19. Martinez and the Cardinals are -143 road chalk this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

                  Slumping:
Wade Miley, Baltimore Orioles (3-4, 4.29 ERA, $165)

Wade Miley has been pretty stinky his last three (albeit short) trips to the mound. Over his last three starts he has thrown a combined 10.2 innings, gave up 20 hits, 15 earned runs, three home runs. And the OVER has easily cashed in all three of those starts.

In a nutshell he has been your standard starting pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles over the past 18 games. Miley and the Orioles host the surging Cleveland Indians today and are +111 home dogs. The total is currently a reasonable 10.5.
