    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

    — Jim Harbaugh has invited former President Obama to be an honorary captain at a Michigan home game this season. Coach Harbaugh knows how to generate publicity.

    — Rookie 3B Matt Chapman, just called up, is a big defensive upgrade for the A’s.

    — Milwaukee’s Eric Thames has homered in four consecutive games.

    — First prize money at the US Open is $30,000 more than Arnold Palmer’s total Tour career prize money.

    — Justin Thomas shot a 63 Saturday, holing one shot for an eagle from 299 yards.

    — Colorado Rockies are in first place; their payroll this year is $127,828,571, 16.7% of which goes to Jose Reyes, who plays for the Mets ($21,465,000).

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Happy Father’s Day!!!

    13) Rumors are rampant that the Celtics/76ers will make a trade that will wind up with Philly having the #1 pick in Thursday’s draft, so they can select Washington PG Markelle Fultz.

Danny Ainge is stockpiling a ton of draft picks over the next few years; at some point, he has to cash them in, but truth is, if the Celtics don’t love one of this year’s prospects more than the others, it makes sense to trade the pick and acquire more assets for down the road.

    12) Las Vegas Summer League runs July 7-17 from UNLV. Fun event to attend. ESPN and NBAtv are showing all the games for those of us who won’t be in the desert then. 24 NBA teams will be represented, but the Knicks aren’t sending a team this year, which is unusual.

It is odd, but I’m looking forward to watching these games, moreso than the non-competitive games we saw in the playoffs. Guys playing for their careers are more fun to watch.

    11) Joe Maddon got tossed Friday night in Pittsburgh during the first batter of the game, after umpires called a long drive that Anthony Rizzo hit a foul ball. Would’ve been third game in a row where Rizzo homered leading off a game, in only his third game as a leadoff batter.

Cubs also had a runner forced at third from the outfield during that inning, but still scored three runs. Pirate TV announcers were calling it one of the strangest innings they’d ever seen.

    10) 12,000 people showed up at City Hall in Los Angeles Thursday night when the city projected the Batman logo onto City Hall to honor the late Adam West.

    9) Thursday night, Chad Pinder became only the 3rd player ever to play SS/RF in the same game for the Oakland A’s, joining Tony Phillips and Bill Almon, who did it six times.

Oakland won that game 8-7 in 10 innings, despite allowing a run in the last five innings- they blew four saves in the game. No bueno.

Eric Orns posted this on Twitter; only one MLB game EVER has gone extra innings, with both teams scoring in every half-inning from innings 6-9. Red Sox-Indians July 31, 1948. This game Thursday missed by one half-inning of becoming the second one.

    8) Quote of the Day, part 2: ”I’m just not a fan of it. I don’t like it. I’m not a Home Run Derby guy. I’m not going to do it.” George Springer of the Astros

    7) Brendan McKay was the #4 pick in the baseball draft, by Tampa Bay. He is going to try and be both a pitcher and a DH as he climbs the ladder in pro ball. Will be a fun experiment to follow— apparently Tampa Bay is going to let him try and do both.

    6) Last year in the NFL, there were eight FG’s missed that were shorter than 30 yards; Seattle’s Steven Hauschka was the only kicker with two of them.

    5) Pete Rose got a statue outside Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati this weekend; the statue depicts one of Rose’s trademark head-first slides. Too bad the powers-to-be don’t put Rose up for election for the Hall of Fame. Would be a HUGE weekend in Cooperstown.

    4) Best wishes to Tigers’ DH Victor Martinez, who is on the DL after he had a rapid heartbeat, dizziness and cold sweats Thursday night— he was in the hospital for a while but is out now. He is not expected to travel with the team on its trip out west next week.

    3) Bill Cosby’s trial resulted in a hung jury, so a mistrial was declared; prosecutors said they will re-try the case, so the whole thing will come down to selecting a more favorable jury, or maybe the prosecution calling other witnesses who’ve accused the 79-year old Cosby of bad deeds. This jury was made up of four white women, six white men, one black woman and one black man.

    2) Underrated great defensive player: Orlando Arcia, shortstop for the Brewers. I watch lot of Milwaukee games; Arcia is one of those guys who make tough plays look simple.

William Shatner does a commercial for a law firm in Milwaukee that airs on Brewer games; I have no idea why/how they got a star like him to do a commercial on local TV. Good get.

    1) Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there; please make sure you call you dad or give him a hug, thank him and tell him how much you love him.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Sunday's picks, betting odds and analysis

              Double-Play Picks

Kansas City Royals at Los Angeles Angels (-110, 8.5)

Sunday afternoon's game in Anaheim will wrap up what has been a very entertaining four-game weekend series between the Angels and Royals. Today will feature a very good pitching matchup with Royals' ace Jason Vargas taking on a very solid J.C. Ramirez for the Angels.

Vargas has been terrific all season for the Royals (and we've gotten winners from him several times in this column) at 9-3, 2.10 ERA, and a 1.09 WHIP. We wouldn't exactly call it a "rough patch", but there was a stretch of three starts a couple of weeks ago where it looked like perhaps Vargas might be trending downward - well, so much for that. Over his last three starts he is 3-0, 1.29 ERA, 1.00 WHIP with only three walks allowed.

Juan Carlos Ramirez is in the midst of his "rough patch" right now. Over his last three outings he owns a 7.31 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, .373 opponent's on base percentage, and has allowed five home runs. He has won two of those three starts but those pair of wins came with a ton of run support - he won't get that today with Vargas on the other side.

Despite the Angels' 9-0 win Saturday, the Royals are 6-1 in the last seven meetings. They are also 6-1 in their last seven overall (all road games).

              Pick: Royals -110

Boston Red Sox at Houston Astros (-120, 9.5)

Sunday Night Baseball tonight will feature the Boston Red Sox in Houston to take on the top team in baseball, the Astros. The teams split the first two games of this three-game series and Sunday will see David Price taking on Joe Musgrove.

What many expected to be an offensive weekend series at Minute Maid Park has actually seen both teams at a point in the season where they are struggling to score runs, and the first two games of the series have played Under the closing total.

The Under is actually 4-0-1 in Boston's last five games overall and during that span they are only averaging 2.8 runs per game. Their pitching has responded nicely to their little hitting slump by only surrendering 3.00 runs per game over this same five game sample.

The Astros are averaging slightly higher at 4.80 runs scored over their last five contests, but that number is inflated due to a 13-run outburst at home Thursday against a very hittable Andrew Cashner and the Texas Rangers. Take Thursday's game out of the equation and the Astros are only averaging 2.75 run per game over their last five (minus one).

With the exception of his one bad start against the Bronx Bombers in New York, Price has been very good since his return from the disabled list and Under has cashed in three of his four starts. Musgrove hasn't been great statistically for the Astros this season but he is one of those guys who just doesn't ever seem to get run support with the Astros offense averaging only 2.75 runs per game in his eight home starts and Under has cashed in six of those eight games.

It's also worth noting that Under is 6-2 in home plate ump Greg Gibson's last eight games behind the plate and Under has cashed in his last five games calling ball and strikes in games involving the Red Sox.

              Pick: Under 9.5

              Yesterday's Picks: 1-1
              Season To Date: 65-55-7

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Robbie Ray, Arizona Diamondbacks (7-3, 2.62 ERA, $450)

Robbie Ray has been (arguably) the best pitcher in baseball over the last month of the season and the ‘arguably’ only comes into play because of "Mad Max" Scherzer.

The Diamondbacks lefty has been putting up video game numbers in his last five starts. 5-0, 37 innings, one earned run (a solo home run), 48 strike outs, 9 walks.

Ray gets the ball today in Philadelphia against the struggling Phillies and is -148 road chalk.

              Slumping:
Bronson Arroyo, Boston Red Sox (3-5, 7.01, $244)

Bronson Arroyo gets the start today for the Reds. While the Reds have a team W/L record of 7-6 in his 13 starts this season, Arroyo and his 7.01 ERA deserve very little credit for that.

His last two starts, however, have been particularly disastrous. In his last trip to the mound he allowed nine runs all earned on 13 hits in just 4.2 innings of work.

The Reds are huge +165 home dogs facing off against Kenta Maeda and the Dodgers.

              Sunday's Top Trends

              * White Sox are 9-1 in their last 10 games with Mark Wegner behind home plate. +190 today @ Blue Jays.
              * Reds are 1-13 in their last 14 vs. National League West. +160 today vs. Dodgers.
              * Over is 8-0 in Cardinals last eight interleague games. Cards/Orioles Total: 10.5.
              * Under is 12-3-2 in Yu Darvish’s last 17 starts overall. Mariners/Rangers Total: 10.5.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

There is a chance of thunderstorms and an increasing chance of rain (up as high as 79 percent) and 12-15 mile per hour wind blowing out to left in Cincinnati today where the Reds are scheduled to host the Dodgers. Rain might be a problem at Camden Yards with a POP of 40 percent and winds blowing 10-13 miles per hour out to center this afternoon where the Cardinals are in town. In Atlanta, there is a chance of thunderstorms and 25-40 percent chance of rain later in the day, it shouldn’t impact first pitch but could cause a delay later in the game.

Plenty of wind around Major League ballparks today and most of it is good news for hitters. At Citi Field there is a 14 mile per hour wind blowing out to left as the Mets host the Nationals. In Philadelphia the Diamondbacks are in town and will be greeted with a 14 miles per hour wind blowing to center field. The Twins host the Cleveland Indians this afternoon and there is an expected gusty 15 mile per hour wind blowing out to right field.

As for the pitchers, the only wind helping them out today is at Rangers Ballpark where the Mariners are in town and 12 mile per hour wind blowing in from right field is forecasted.

              Ump Of The Day

Chad Whitson: No umpire in baseball has loved home cooking like Chad Whitson so far this season. The home team is 11-0 with Whitson calling balls and strikes in 2017. If you have bet $100.00 on the home team in each of his 11 games behind the dish you would have won $1159.00.

Great news for Athletics fans as they are -103 at home today against the Yankees.
