    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — Predators 4, Penguins 1— Home team has won all four Stanley Cup final games.

    — Al Pacino will play Joe Paterno in a movie that Barry Levinson is writing for HBO.

    — Over/under for no-hitters this year at William Hill sportsbooks in Las Vegas is 3.5.

    — There were seven grand slams hit Saturday, the most ever in one day. Mike Zunino knocked in seven runs, but probably didn’t even get on SportsCenter.

    — 7 of Ryan Zimmerman’s 16 homers have come in the 8th inning or later.

    — Apparently, the Cardinals wear navy hats on the road if they’re playing a team that wears red hats, like Cincinnati.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) We live in a very, very impatient society. Thad Matta went 337-123 in 13 years as basketball coach at Ohio State, but went 38-29 the last two years (18-18 in Big 14 games). Monday, he was told to take a hike by the Buckeyes- he’ll get paid for the last three years of his contract.

Matta’s recruiting had slipped, in part because of health concerns related to a botched back surgery, and his current team isn’t expected to be a contender next winter. Ohio State AD Gene Smith will conduct a national search; he’ll get turned down a lot and finally he will find a coach who, chances are, isn’t as good a coach as Matta.

Ohio State has a dreamer’s Wish List of potential replacements: Brad Stevens, Billy Donovan, Chris Mack, Chris Holtmann. When you fire a guy with a record like Matta’s, it makes hiring his replacement a lot harder, especially when you’re known as a football school.

If I was an Ohio State advisor, I’d tell them to give Eric Musselman a call; it would be a coup for the Buckeyes, because Musselmann is very good, and he has Ohio ties in his background. Nevada only pays him $300K.

    12) Speaking of Big 14 basketball, their teams are 14-4 vs SEC teams the last two years, including 2-1 vs Kentucky.

    11) 76ers announced that Joel Embiid/Ben Simmons won’t be playing summer league ball next month, meaning that even if Simmons is healthy for Opening Night this fall, it’ll be 18 months since he’s played in a real basketball game. He’s cashed a lot of checks but hasn’t played in the NBA yet. I’m very, very curious to see how he does.

    10) 18-year old kid named Casey Mittelstadt, who is a top prospect for the NHL Draft, couldn’t do any pull-ups and did one rep on the bench press at the NHL Combine.

He should take solace in knowing that Kevin Durant had roughly the same experience when he went to the NBA Combine ten years ago. His career has turned out pretty well.

    9) College baseball coaches are bunt-crazy; Central Connecticut lost 6-5 to Dallas Baptist in the NCAA tournament Sunday- they had four sacrifice bunts in the game, which means that four of their 27 outs were made on purpose. No bueno.

    8) Minor leaguers in the Kansas City Royals’ system are not allowed to wear sunglasses on their hat, unless they wear them on the back of their head- they’re not allowed to cover up the logo on the front of the cap, in respect for the organization. I’m not making this up; they were talking about it on Sunday. Royals’ color commentator Rex Hudler didn’t even know that rule existed.

    7) Saw a movie Oliver Stone made a movie about George W Bush; Richard Dreyfuss played VP Dick Cheney— he looked so much like Cheney I almost didn’t recognize him. Dreyfuss starred in two of my favorite movies: Let It Ride and Moon over Parador— it was weird seeing him in a serious role.

    6) Jason Dufner shot 65-65-77-68 in winning The Memorial in Ohio; he is the first golfer since Nick Faldo at the ’89 Masters to win a tournament after shooting 77 or worse in the third round.

    5) I had no idea the E in Chuck E. Cheese stands for “Entertainment”, as if eating pizza with a person in a mouse costume wasn’t enough.

    4) Yadier Molina will be 35 in July; he’s started 48 of the Cardinals’ first 54 games behind the plate, the most of any big league catcher. St Louis is 26-29, only four games out of first place in the NL Central, 6.5 games out of the second Wild Card slot- they can’t afford to rest him.

    3) A guy in Tennessee found a stash of unopened baseball cards from the 50’s/60’s in his aunt’s attic; the cards are expected to reap a six-figure bonanza when he sells them. My earliest baseball cards are from 1965- may have to go look thru them.

    2) Seahawks signed QB Austin Davis to back up Russell Wilson, meaning Colin Kaepernick is likely to start the summer unemployed. Davis was with the Rams for a couple years; I actually liked him, thought he had potential.

    1) Still amazes me that Steph Curry went to Davidson and Klay Thompson went to Washington State, even though both their dads played in the NBA. Dell Curry played at Virginia Tech; they couldn’t have offered Steph a scholarship? Or his brother Seth, who went to Liberty before Duke poached him? Makes you wonder…….

June good month/bad month MLB starting pitchers

After a series of fine starts, Lester was roughed up by Los Angeles at the end of May, which raised his ERA to 3.86 - but like the weather, the left-hander warms up and has experienced several strong June's.

You know the saying, “May flowers bring June showers.” For Major League Baseball pitchers hurling during the month of June, showers are hopefully not in their immediate plans. Instead, MLB starting pitchers hope to stay in the game long enough to avoid having to clean up early.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of June. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in June, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each June over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s June list.

      GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

      Wei-Yin Chen, Miami Marlins (11-5, 8-2 H)

Chen was 2-3 this season before being shut down after his May 1st start. His right elbow received a platelet-rich plasma injection and there is still no timetable for his return from the DL.

      Jon Lester, Chicago Cubs (12-5, 6-1 H)

After a series of fine starts, Lester was roughed up by Los Angeles at the end of May, which raised his ERA to 3.86. But like the weather, the left-hander warms up and has experienced several strong June's. And when pitching at Wrigley Field this season, opposing hitters own only a .179 batting average.

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (13-4, 7-1 H)

Baseball's best pitcher continues to shine and with how the L.A. Dodgers enter this month, Kershaw should pile up the victories. While Kershaw is still sensational, he's been plagued for the first time in allowing home runs, with 10 already surrendered.

Carlos Martinez, St. Louis Cardinals (9-4, 5-2 A)

After a really slow start, the Cards Martinez has lowered his ERA more than 1.50 runs and is back to typical career numbers. Quietly, his batting average allowed is at .217, compared to .244 for his St. Louis career.

      * Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers (8-4, 2-0 A)

With low velocity and sharpness to his breaking pitches gone, Sanchez has been sent to the bullpen with his substantial contract and only being used in mop up roles and even then his ERA is still at 9.00.

      * Chris Tillman, Baltimore Orioles (12-4, 8-2 H)

Tillman started the season with shoulder woes and did not make first start until May 7th. After five starts he still seems to searching for location and command and he will be worth watching given his prior June numbers.

      BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Nate Eovaldi, Tampa Bay Rays (5-11, 2-5 H)

Still recovering from Tommy John surgery ant not likely to hurl this season.

Francisco Liriano, Toronto Blue Jays (3-9, 2-6 H)

The 33-year old lefty has been on the DL since mid-May with a bum shoulder and is scheduled to start for Toronto on June 2nd. Once possessing one of the best curveballs in baseball, age and injuries seem to be taking their toll.

      * Shelby Miller, Arizona Diamondbacks (4-10, 2-5 H)

After a much better start to this season compared to last, Miller blew out his elbow and is another Tommy John victim.

Jeff Samardzija, San Francisco Giants (5-11, 2-5 H)

San Francisco has made few front office mistakes in the last nine years. After not learning their lesson about long contracts for starting pitchers like Matt Cain, they signed Samardzija to five-deal deal and are not reaping the benefits. There was a reason he was 47-61 BEFORE going the Giants and he is 13-18 with them.

      Ervin Santana, Minnesota Twins (2-8, 1-5 A)

The right-hander is easily off to the best start of his career in 2017, pitching for Minnesota. He will enter this month with a 1.75 ERA (career 4.01), however, in past seasons after quick starts, Santana has eventually regressed towards the norm.

      * Jered Weaver, San Diego Padres (5-11, 3-8 H)

With a 0-5 record and 7.94 ERA after nine starts with San Diego, the Padres placed this former ace on the DL. Weaver is a shell of his former prominence and the separation between fastballs, curves and change-ups, no longer fools batters. It’s sad to watch from a hurler who really understood how to pitch side-and-side and up-and-down without an overpowering heater.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Tuesday's Picks, Betting Odds and Analysis

                Double-Play Picks

San Francisco Giants at Milwaukee Brewers (-130, 9)

The Giants opened their four-game series in Milwaukee on Monday night with a tidy 7-2 victory over the Brewers. Just as we predicted in yesterday's Line Drive, the Brewers' bullpen was a problem and allowed five runs in the late innings to give the game away.

Yesterday we went with a First Five Innings wager on the Brewers and managed to escape with a 2-2 Push. We're going back to the well on more time Tuesday night.

This matchup of starting pitchers comes down to home/road splits. Matt Cain gets the ball for the Giants and he owns a dismal 0-2 win/loss record with an ERA of 8.28 on the road this season. His opponents on base percentage is at .402 with a massive WHIP of 1.96.

Chase Anderson, on the other hand, owns a 2.12 ERA when throwing from the Miller Park rubber in 2017 with an opponents on base percentage of .279 and a WHIP of 1.11.

One aspect of the Brewers that we don't trust tonight (or seemingly ever) is their bullpen. They possess one of the worst bullpens in baseball over the first two months of the season with an ERA of 4.11, 11 blown saves (second most in MLB), and a major league high 17 losses (including last night).

All of this info wrapped up together is screaming for another First Five Innings wager on the Milwaukee Brewers.

                Pick: Brewers 1st 5 innings (-135)

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds (+113, 9.5)

The Cardinals were still licking their wounds after getting swept this past weekend against the Cubs and dropped their opener with the Reds Monday night in Cincinnati. St. Louis will look to get back on track and even their four-game set at one.

Luckily for the Cards, they couldn’t be sending a better guy to the mound to snap a losing streak. Adam Wainwright toes the rubber for Game 2 and the veteran right-hander is looking like his old self. Wainwright has allowed just one earned run in his last four starts, scattering just 16 hits over 26.1 innings of work. That equates to a 0.34 ERA and a 0.911 WHIP in those four starts.

The Reds counter with Tim Adleman. The 29-year-old second year right-hander has struggled versus the Cardinals during his young career. Adleman is 1-2 in three career starts against St. Louis, pitching to a 5.19 ERA. That includes a meeting earlier this season, back on April 28th, when the Cardinals chased him from the game after six runs (five earned) on eight hits, plus two home runs, in 5.1 innings of work.

The Reds also rank last in the majors in starter ERA at 6.06 and rank 27th in quality starts with just 20.

Cincinnati can score runs, but Wainwright is more than capable of shutting them down and look for the opportunistic St. Louis bats to take advantage early versus Adelman. Look for Wainwright to keep rolling.

                Pick: Cardinals -123

                Yesterday's Picks: 1-0-1

                Season To Date: 55-43-6

                Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                Streaking:
Robbie Ray, Arizona Diamondbacks (5-3, 3.00 ERA, $250)

The Houston Astros have been awesome so far in 2017 (and their current 11-game road winning streak is very impressive), but for our money the biggest story across Major League Baseball over the past few weeks has been Robbie Ray of the Diamondbacks.

He's had his struggles in the past, and has been one of those starters that you look for on the schedule as a very strong fade option, but something has clicked on for him over his last three starts. 23.2 innings, zero runs allowed, six hits allowed, 25 K/3 BB...it simply doesn't get any better than those number over a three-game span.

Ray and the D-Backs are big -200 favorites at home tonight against the Padres.

                Slumping:
Jose Quintana, Chicago White Sox (2-7, 5.60 ERA, $-314)

If Jose Quintana has any desire of getting out of Chicago and pitching for a contending team at any point this season he had better start pitching better...soon.

Over his last two starts, Quintana has hardly looked like a starting pitcher who belongs in the major leagues, let alone someone who should be in the starting rotation for a potential playoff team. Seven total innings over his last two starts with 15 hits allowed and an ERA of 19.29. Good luck getting any top prospects in return, Mr. Hahn.

Quintana and the White Sox are +155 underdogs tonight in Tampa against Chris Archer and the Rays.

                Tuesday's Top Trends

                * The Chicago White Sox are 3-13 in their last 16 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. +155 today @ Rays.
                * The Miami Marlins are 0-6 in the last 6 meetings in Chicago. +160 today @ Cubs.
                * Over is 15-3-3 in The New York Mets' last 21 road games. Mets/Rangers Total: 9.5.
                * The Houston Astros have won their last 11 overall and their last 11 road games. -140 today @ Royals.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

There is no precipitation in the MLB forecast for today, which is great news.

Hitter's winds could be a factor in a few ballparks this evening:

                - Cardinals at Reds (Total: 9): 10 MPH wind blowing out to right field.
                - Angels at Tigers (Total: 9): 13-15 MPH wind blowing out to right-center field.
                - Mets at Rangers (Total: 9.5): 10 MPH wind blowing out to right field.
                - Blue Jays at Athletics (Total: 8): 13-15 MPH wind blowing out to center field.

The daily check of the winds at Wrigley Field in Chicago shows that there will be a 12-15 miles per hour wind blowing in from left field.

                Ump Of The Day

Pat Hoberg: Pretty good news for the Oakland A's today as Pat Hoberg will be calling balls and strikes for their game tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays. There have been 88 umpires thus far in 2017 who have officiated at least one game behind home plate and Hoberg ranks as the No. 12 homer umpire at 6-2. The A's have also been very successful with Hoberg behind the dish, winning five of their last six games with him in control.

The A's are +130 home underdogs tonight.
