    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Some over/under win totals for college football this coming fall:

    — Alabama 10.5, over -$150

    — Ohio State 10, over -$125

    — Penn State 9.5, under -$125

    — Florida State 9.5, over -$130

    — Clemson 9

    — Oklahoma 9.5, over -$145

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff on a spring Sunday……..

    13) Lebron James isn’t one of the three finalists for NBA’s MVP; they should change the name of the award to Player of the Year, because no one is as valuable to their team as James is to the Cavaliers. He is so consistently great he gets taken for granted.

    12) Atlanta Braves acquired 1B Matt Adams from St Louis for a minor leaguer; they need a bat with Freddie Freeman out for the next 2-3 months.

    11) Baseball oddity; in Jason deGrom’s last two starts, he had the same home plate umpire, Phil Cuzzi, who switched crews this week, for some reason. Very rare for the same umpire to work two starts in a row by the same pitcher.

    10) Cloud Computing ($28.80) won the Preakness, only the 4th time in the last 34 years the Preakness winner was a horse that didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby.

    9) White Sox are apparently close to signing 19-year old outfielder Luis Robert, who is thought to be the best unsigned Cuban prospect right now. The young man defected from Cuba and is Haiti these days— he is going to be really, really rich pretty soon.

    8) Best wishes to Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, who recently had an 8th operation on his right eye, after he detached a retina last year. Zimmer missed one game and coached another while wearing an eye patch.

    7) Texas Rangers quietly won ten games in a row; while they’re still 6.5 games behind Houston in the AL West, if the playoffs started now, Texas would be one of the Wild Card teams.

    6) When he went to the NBA Combine 10 years ago, Kevin Durant couldn’t lift 185 pounds, which isn’t good but hasn’t seemed to hamper his career much. Now Durant advises prospects to skip the combine. At some point in all of this scouting over-analysis, the primary question has to be: “Can he play?”, not “Is he is a candidate to win a gold medal in the clean-and-jerk?”

    5) Astros’ pitching ace Dallas Keuchel is on the 10-day DL with a pinched nerve in his neck. The new 10-day DL allows teams to simply skip a pitcher’s turn if he has a minor injury, which this one supposedly is.

    4) Pointspreads on Cavaliers (-14.5) and Warriors (-13.5) this weekend are the biggest in any NBA conference final game since 2005.

    3) Before the Nationals-Braves game Saturday, after the national anthem on what was Military Appreciation Day, Bryce Harper posed for pictures with service members for several minutes. Pretty cool to see; the media is so quick to point out bad things about people. Nice to see the good things these guys do.

    2) Oklahoma City Thunder’s Enes Kanter is from Turkey; he was traveling in Europe this weekend, but because of his political beliefs (I have no idea what they are), his passport was voided by the Turkish government. With no “valid” passport, Kanter was not allowed to enter Romania and was later put on a flight to London, on his way back to this country.

NBA has thought about putting some teams in Europe eventually; you wonder if stuff like this will put a kibosh on those ideas. It is a crazy world out there.

    1) Think about this week in Washington, when Kurdish protestors were getting beat up by the Turkish president’s bodyguards out in the open on the street; Turkey must be a really fun place to live. We are lucky to live in this country; it isn’t perfect here, but it is a hell of a lot better than most places.

FOUR UNDERPERFORMING PITCHERS TO MONITOR FOR YOUR MLB DAILY FANTASY LINEUP

All that matters in daily fantasy is the scoring. If you have the most points at the end of a given contest, you win — and it doesn't matter how you earn those points. Once they're in the bank, they're yours to keep.

That said, numbers don't necessarily tell the story when it comes to evaluating solid fantasy plays. A pitcher might miss his location by a quarter of an inch, and see that pitch wind up on the other side of the outfield wall for a grand slam. A hitter might make great contact with a fastball, only to have it get caught up in the wind and land in an outfielder's glove rather than in the bleachers.

Monty Andrews presents you with four pitchers who have been somewhat unlucky to date, making them terrific options for a bounceback at a salary that should be much friendlier than it was earlier in the season.

RHP Jeff Samardzija, San Francisco Giants

Samardzija is the poster boy for bad luck so far this season. Both his Fielding-Independent Pitching and his xFIP — two metrics that evaluate a pitcher's results independent of how his defense has performed — reveal a startling disconnect between his numbers and his actual performance; despite a 1-5 record and a 5.26 ERA, his FIP is just 3.12 while his xFIP is even better at 2.80.

What does this mean? Basically, Samardzija has been snake-bitten by subpar defense and a high opponent's BABIP (.343) — two factors that should improve over time. The veteran righty could do himself more favors by lowering his HR/FB rate (15.9 percent), but positive regression is coming — and soon. Take a chance on him in some of your tournament lineups next time out.

            RHP Charlie Morton, Houston Astros

The gap between Morton's ERA through eight starts (3.97) and his FIP/xFIP (3.33/3.33) isn't nearly as pronounced as that of Samardzija, but it's still significant enough to monitor. Morton has made great strides in Houston, rocking an amazing 10.72 K/9 while giving up fewer than 0.8 home runs per nine innings so far this season.

Like Samardzija, the major issue with Morton is an inflated BABIP (.336) which should normalize before long. If it does — and if Morton can maintain most of his K/9 gains in the process — you could be looking at a fantasy ace in the making. Morton is looking like the real deal and can be rostered in all formats thanks in large part to his enormous strikeout potential.

            RHP Josh Tomlin, Cleveland Indians

Tomlin is off to a dreadful start to the season, carrying a 6.86 ERA through is first eight outings. But he isn't entirely to blame for that inflated rate, as his FIP/xFIP (3.75/3.33) would suggest. Tomlin made a living in 2016 out of keeping the walks to a minimum, and he is doing the same thing this year (four walks in 40 2/3 innings) — but the home runs are a big problem.

Tomlin has already allowed six long balls in 2017, and surrendered a whopping 36 a season ago. A reduction in BABIP from .364 should help his ERA, but his ceiling is limited by a modest 7.1 K/9 rate and an inability to pitch deep into games. You might be better off limiting Tomlin's daily fantasy usage to only the most positive matchups — and beware the homers.

RHP Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals

Wainwright sports an unsightly 5.31 ERA through eight starts, well below his FIP (3.84) and xFIP (4.05). Yet, while Wainwright has certainly been flummoxed by an incredible .390 BABIP against — the worst rate of any qualifying starter — he also has himself to blame in part, as his 3.61 BB/9 rate is the highest of his career.

Add in a modest 7.7 K/9 rate, and can you really trust Wainwright in FanDuel? Probably not for the foreseeable future. Even if his BABIP returns to a more reasonable rate, there are too many other red flags. He won't rack up the Ks, and those walks can get him into trouble even if he's giving up fewer hits. Leave him unrostered.

              Sunday's Diamond Notes
              May 21, 2017

              Hottest team:
Rangers (10-1 past 11 games overall)

The Rangers saw their 10-game winning streak go up in smoke against Justin Verlander and Tigers at Comerica Park on Saturday. All good things must come to an end, but it doesn't mean the Rangers need to follow up their win streak with a losing skid. They'll turn to Yu Darvish for Sunday's series finale on national television. Texas has won each of Darvish's past five outings, they're 6-1 in his past seven on the road and they're 5-2 in his past seven assignments against teams with an overall winning mark. In addition, he enters well rested. The Rangers are 8-2 across Darvish's past 10 outings with four days of rest.

Coldest team Blue Jays (1-5 past six games overall, 4-8 past 12 road games)

The Blue Jays wrap up a three-game set on Sunday and they're looking to avoid the sweep. Toronto continues to limp along with just eight victories over their past 25 road games, although they're 9-4 in their past 13 road games against a left-handed starter. They have been solid behind Marco Estrada lately, going 7-3 in his past 10 road assignments facing off against a team with a winning overall record. Toronto has won just once in the past six outings and they're just 1-7 over the past eight outings vs. LHP.

Hottest pitcher: Andrew Triggs, Athletics (5-2, 2.12 ERA)

Triggs has come out of nowhere to rank fifth overall in the majors in ERA. A big key to his success has been his ability to keep the ball down and in the park, allowing just two homers across 46 2/3 innings over eight starts. Opponents are hitting just .209 against Triggs and he has posted a respectable 1.03 WHIP in eight outings. The A's have won four straight outings at home while going 4-1 in their past five overall. In addition, the A's are 6-2 in their past eight tries against a left-handed starter and 6-2 in Triggs' past eight assignments. He'll look to add to Boston's woes in the Bay Area, as they're 16-35 over their past 51 trips to Oaktown.

Coldest pitcher: Bronson Arroyo, Reds (3-3, 6.31 ERA)

Arroyo's record isn't terrible, but it's more the result of good run support and nothing he has been doing. He has coughed up at least four earned runs in four of his past eight outings, and 45 hits with 13 walks over 41 1/3 innings this season. Cincinnati has won just once in the past eight games and they're 19-39 in their past 58 against left-handed starting pitching. The good news for bettors is that the Reds are 4-1 in Arroyo's past five home outings against the Rockies.

Biggest UNDER run: Royals (6-2 past eight games)

The 'under' hit in Friday's series opener in Minnesota, and the 'under' is 7-5 in the past 12 road outings for Kansas City. However, the 'over' is 3-0-2 in the previous five meetings this season. The 'under' is 8-2 in Kansas City's past 10 tries against a left-handed starter and an amazing 16-4-1 in the past 21 for the Royals against a team with a winning overall record. The under is also 10-2-1 in Ian Kennedy's past 13 road starts while going 8-1-2 in his past 11 road starts against a team with a winning record.

Biggest OVER run: Mets (6-2-1 past nine games)

The 'over' has been the play for the Mets lately, going 32-14-6 in their past 52 games overall, including an impressive 17-6-4 mark in their past 27 outings at Citi Field. If you think that's impressive you'll really be bowled over by the fact the 'over' is 19-3-4 in New York's past 26 against right-handed starting pitching and 13-2-1 in their past 16 games after scoring five or more runs in their previous outing. The 'over' will be put to the test against the Halos, as the 'under' is 22-9 in their past 31 road outings. However, the 'over' is 4-1 in the past five for the Angels against left-handed starting pitching.

Matchup to watch: Tigers vs. Rangers

The Tigers cooled off the Rangers in Saturday's middle game, snapping a 10-game winning streak. They'll turn to southpaw Matthew Boyd trying to piece together a win streak. He was bounced around for seven earned runs, eight hits and two walks over 2 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Orioles last time out. He has also yielded at least three earned runs in each of his past four assignments. The Tigers are just 1-5 over Boyd's past six home outings, however, and 0-4 in his past four starts overall. The Rangers, on the other hand, are 5-0 in Darvish's past five outings nad 6-1 in his past seven assignments on the road.

Betcha didn’t know: The White Sox piled up 16 runs in Saturday's rout of the Mariners in Safeco Field, forcing Dillon Overton to work in relief. That left an open spot in the rotation for Sunday's series finale, so the club will recall Chris Heston from Triple-A Tacoma. He was pasted for five runs and seven hits across two innings in a relief outing on April 25, his only appearance of the season at the big-league level. It might be another successful outing for the White Sox offense unless Heston turns things around.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-200) vs. Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Giants (+155) at Cardinals

              Biggest line move:
Cubs (-175 to -200) vs. Brewers

                  Guys,

I don't know what the hell is going on with internet functions today. I can't access most of these sources today. I'll keep trying but it's just next to impossible under these conditions.

I've talked to several other people this morning who all seem to be experiencing the same thing. It must be a Microsoft update problem because it's effecting all my browsers. Hell, I can't even access browser contained pages like settings, extensions, plug-ins, history, faves..........NOTHING!!!!

Do we U.S. Americans do anything well anymore? It sure doesn't seem that way.

Could this be a government intervention? They really don't like us being able to access information freely and they surely don't like the idea of money leaving the country except, of course, for their own money that is stashed all over the world in secret accounts. I guess it might be but it's more likely that it's just Silicon Valley people thinking again.

p.s. I usually don't like to use anything in these threads that's just someone's opinion, including my own, as opposed to a verifiable fact. I'm just a tiny bit pissed this morning. Please excuse me.
