    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

    — Rory McIlroy has back/rib injuries, has pulled out of the BMW tourney next week. His status for the US Open is up in the air.

    — Cavaliers 130, Celtics 86— Cleveland led 72-31 at the half— 72-31!!!!

    — Nationals, Twins are only teams with an extra base hit in every game this season.

    — RIP Wayne Walker, a LB for the Lions who also their punter, then later a good announcer on TV. There was a time when punters played other positions; Walker was a very good LB.

    — NASCAR driver Alric Almirola is out 8-12 weeks with a broken vertebrae after his scary accident at Bristol Motor Speedway.

    — Jason deGrom pitched seven innings last nite, the first time in 18 games a Mets’ starting pitcher got an out after the sixth inning.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

    13) Paolo Espino is 30 years old; he’s pitched in the minor leagues for 10 years— 291 games, 191 starts, 1,304 IP. Finally, this week he got the call to the major leagues and started for Milwaukee at Wrigley Field Friday.

Imagine the emotion he felt? How excited he must’ve been? His dad flew all the way from Panama to see the game. Luckily for him, the wind was whipping hard and it was blowing in, which makes Wrigley a supreme pitchers’ park.

    12) Brandon Kintzner is the Twins’ closer; he’s 32 years old, from Palo Verde HS in Las Vegas and Dixie State in Utah. Back in 2009, he was offered a chance to try out for the role of Tim Hudson in Moneyball, but chose instead to play in an independent league all-star game.

Luckily for him, the Brewers spotted him at the All-Star Game, signed him to a minor league deal and he made it to Miller Park the next year. Now he is the Twins’ closer and a good one.

    11) Jose Abreu hasn’t homered in 66 plate appearances at home this year; he’s hit seven in 95 PA’s on the road. That could be weather-related; Abreu’s bat has often heated up when the weather does. Hasn’t been too warm on the south side of Chicago this spring.

    10) Quick story from my days coaching Little League:

I was an assistant coach; my future ex-wife’s nephew was on the team, which wasn’t a good team. I’m warming up our starting pitcher at practice one night; he throws strikes, but didn’t throw hard, but at least he throws strikes.

After three pitches, the kid says to me, “You know, I can pitch left-handed.” I’m thinking to myself, “Kid, you can barely pitch right-handed.” But our team wasn’t good, so I tell him to throw me a couple left-handed.

Well, what do you know; the kid threw much harder, and a heavy ball— he was good!!!! I’m like, what took you so long to tell us? Now I have to break the news to our head coach without him thinking I’m pranking him.

We didn’t have a good season, but the kid did real well pitching lefty (he also was a catcher and played righty as a catcher); he would’ve made the All-Star team except his dad got transferred out-of-state for work so the family moved as soon as school got out.

Just goes to show you; keep your ears open. You never know what you might hear.

    9) Anaheim Ducks’ Corey Perry has three overtime goals in the NHL playoffs this spring, the first player to do that since Maurice Richard in 1951.

    8) There have been 26 overtime games in the NHL playoffs this spring; the record is 28 (1993), they had 27 in 2013. Playoff hockey is way more fun to watch than the NBA playoffs.

    7) When the Las Vegas Golden Knights have their expansion draft next month (yes, the NHL has a team in Las Vegas now), the Knights will select 30 players- they have to take at least one player from every team in the league.

    6) Stayed up late Thursday night watching a replay of Super Bowl XIV, from January of 1980, Rams-Steelers. Long time ago, but I had never seen the replay of that game. Rams had won seven division titles in a row, but only made the Super Bowl in ’79 after they started the season 4-5 and survived a bunch of injuries.

    Some observations from the broadcast:
    — Football was way different in 1980; guys got hit out of bounds a few times- no flags.
    — TV graphics were obviously way worse; no game clock on the screen until the last minute.
    — CBS analyst Tom Brookshier wouldn’t have lasted two weeks in today’s politically correct world. He was funny as hell and told the truth, but people today don’t always want the truth.
    — The whole world is so different now; there were over 100,000 people there, doubt any of them had phones in their pockets. How many people go to games now without a cellphone?
    — Rams basically played that Super Bowl at home, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It was their last year at the Coliseum before they moved to Anaheim.
    — Teams substituted so much less then than they do now, from play-to-play.

    5) Miami Marlins hired former big league OF Todd Hollandworth as a TV analyst this year; he is very good, and for one reason— Marlins’ broadcasts are like listening to Hollandsworth and Rich Waltz sit around and talk about ball. They’re not announcing the game as much as they’re just talking about baseball and having a good time. Very relaxed; fun to listen to.

    4) My personal opinion on the NBA Draft is this: If I ran an NBA franchise and could take Lonzo Ball, I wouldn’t let his father’s antics make me pick someone else.

That is assuming I thought Ball was the best player available and fitted what my team needed. UCLA had a terrific season this past year; the kid is a really good player. NBA players are well-versed in tuning out distractions.

    3) Ryan Fitzpatrick signed as a free agent QB with the Buccaneers; if he throws a pass for Tampa Bay this season, he’ll be the sixth QB in NFL history to throw a pass for seven different teams, joining: Jeff Blake, Steve Bono, Chris Chandler, Gus Frerotte and Vinny Testaverde.

    2) Je’rell Springer didn’t play HS basketball last winter due to eligibility issues after he changed schools in Las Vegas, but he got a scholarship from Southern Utah anyway, turning down BYU, an unusual choice. Springer is a great get for the Big Sky’s Thunderbirds.

    1) Will Nerd Power catch on in Milwaukee? Eric Sogard (he wears glasses when he plays) came up to the Brewers this week and went 10-17 (.588) in his first six games with the Crew, with two 4-hit games. This is the same guy who hit .239 in 1,210 AB’s over six years in Oakland.

Sogard was once a 2nd round draft pick by the Padres out of Arizona State; terrific fielder. Wish he had hit like this for the A’s.

My condolences to Brewers’ TV analyst Bill Schroeder, whose mom passed away this week. I lost my dad two years ago last night; miss him every day.

Bad bullpens have made these sensational MLB starting pitchers "5-inning only" bets

There's nothing worse than banking on a solid outing from a starter, and getting it - only to see your moneyline bet fall through because the guy's bullpen had a meltdown. Most baseball bettors would rather get food poisoning than suffer this kind of fate.

While the majority of bullpens are better than they've ever been before, you'll still see an occasional lead blown because none of the team's relievers can get anybody out. But hey, that's what first five-inning lines are for, right?

Here are four pitchers whose five-inning performances have been much stronger than their overall records, making them solid short-game bets:

RHP Matt Andriese, Tampa Bay Rays
      Overall record: 3-1, 4 no-decisions
      5-inning record: 7-1

That Andriese isn't even the only Tampa Bay pitcher on the list speaks to the frustrating ineptitude of the Rays' bullpen, which has allowed 98 runs from the sixth inning onward — second-most in the majors. Despite this, Andriese has had a terrific season so far, limiting opponents to a .237 batting average while averaging nearly a strikeout per inning through eight starts.

The Rays led after the fifth inning in each of Andriese's first four starts, but he came away with just one victory to show for it. He took his only loss of the season against the Blue Jays on April 29, then answered with three straight five-inning victories, picking up a pair of actual wins over that span. If the Tampa Bay bullpen were even modestly better, he would have 5-plus wins at this point.

RHP Chris Archer, Tampa Bay Rays
      Overall record: 3-2, 4 no-decisions
      5-inning record: 6-2-1

Archer has been just as sharp as Andriese in the early going, ranking in the Top 5 league-wide in strikeouts while limiting foes to a .225 batting average. Yet, he finds himself with just three wins on the season and, despite struggling for the majority of the past month, he should also have five or more victories by this point.

His most frustrating no-decision game in a rematch with the Blue Jays on May 5, in which he allowed a game-tying home run to Kendrys Morales in the seventh inning before watching the Rays bullpen surrender five runs in the eighth. It has been that kind of year for Tampa Bay's beleaguered relief corps, which enters Friday having thrown the fourth-most innings in baseball.

      RHP Andrew Cashner, Texas Rangers
      Overall record: 1-3, 3 no-decisions
      5-inning record: 4-2-1

Cashner is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance after struggling for most of the 2015 and 2016 seasons. But you wouldn't know it by looking at his record, with his only victory coming last time out against the Philadelphia Phillies. That said, Cashner has been one of the strongest five-inning plays in baseball, made even stronger by the fact he has been an underdog in five of seven starts.

The Texas bullpen is partly to blame for Cashner's win drought — it has allowed the third-most runs after the fifth inning so far in 2017. The once-vaunted offense is also culpable, having scored a total of seven runs over Cashner's first five starts, resulting in a 0-3 record despite a 2.63 ERA in that stretch. With 14 runs in his last two starts, perhaps the support will stick around.

RHP Luis Perdomo, San Diego Padres
      Overall record: 0-0, 6 no-decisions
      5-inning record: 3-1-2

Perdomo hasn't exactly lit the world on fire through six starts, boasting a 4.19 ERA while topping out at six innings. But he deserves a much better fate than six consecutive no-decisions to open the season, and is still looking for his first win of the season thanks at least in part to a Padres bullpen that has allowed a whopping 100 runs after the fifth inning — the most of any team in the majors.

Perdomo has found himself trailing after five innings in just one of his first half-dozen appearances, with three leads in that span. You'll likely continue to get great five-inning odds on him thanks to the Padres' overall futility, but they have the kind of lineup that can jump out to a nice early lead. They just can't keep the opponent from coming back to win. At least, not yet.

              Weekend Outlook
              May 19, 2017

              Cleveland (20-19) at Houston (29-12)
Series Price: Astros -135, Indians +115
Scheduled Rotation: Bauer (3-4) vs. Morton (5-2), Clevinger (1-1) vs. Fiers (1-1), Salazar (2-4) vs. Musgrove (3-3)

The Astros are running away with the American League West with a 7.5 game lead over Texas, the team that won the division last season. They have baseball's best record, and more importantly they have been the most profitable team at the bet window with +13.6 units. The good news for the Indians this weekend is that they'll miss Dallas Keuchel who leads the AL in wins (7) and ERA (1.84). Because of Keuchel missing the series, Station Casinos has posted the Astros as a short -135 favorite to win the series.

The Indians come in with with the best bullpen in baseball with a 1.96 ERA and converting all 11 of its save opportunities. Colorado has the second-best save percentage (90.48) converting 19 of 21. It's basically a lockdown with the Indians when the starter comes out which makes it hard to believe their record isn't better than it is. Only 25 runs allowed in 116.2 innings with opponents hitting .203 is incredible. The main reason why the Indians don't have a better record is because the starting rotation, which was supposed to be one of the best in baseball. They have a 4.95 ERA which ranks 28th.

One trend to take note of between these two clubs is going 21-6-2 to the 'under' in the last 29 meetings. The best value of the weekend is probably taking the Indians and 'under' on Sunday with Danny Salazar on the hill.

              Toronto (18-24) at Baltimore (23-16)
Series Price: Orioles -155, Blue Jays +135
Scheduled Rotation: Sanchez (0-1) vs Tillman (1-0), Bolsinger (0-2) vs. Gausman (2-3), Estrada (2-2) vs. Miley (1-1)

After winning seven of eight games the Blue Jays found themselves in trouble during the week losing three of four to the Braves. The good news for them is that their bats are hot. They've been crushing the ball and have gone 'over' in their last four games. The Orioles come off an awful 1-6 road trip, but home is where their heart is. They've gone 16-5 in their last 21 home games. Toronto has gone 9-2 to the 'over' in their last 11 road games. However, 12 of the past 14 meetings between these two cubs have stayed 'under' the number.

              Colorado (26-16) at Cincinnati (19-21)
Series Price: Reds -120, Rockies +100
Scheduled Rotation: Anderson (2-4) vs Bonilla (0-1), Senzatela (6-1) vs. Adleman (2-2), Freeland (4-2) vs. Arroyo (3-3)

And the Reds have finally come back to reality. Pittsburgh is still in last place of the NL Central, but the Reds should be there soon and it might happen this weekend. But somehow they're the favorite to win the series despite playing the NL West-leading Rockies and riding a six-game losing streak. The best value of the weekend should be Saturday with Antonio Senzatela who has been the third most profitable pitcher in baseball at +6.8 units. The Rockies have won seven of his eight starts. The Rockies have stayed 'under' in 10 of their last 14 games, but Senatela has gone 'over' in his last five starts after staying 'under' in his first three.

              Texas (22-20) at Detroit (20-19)
Series Price: Tigers -150, Rangers +130
Scheduled Rotation: Martinez (0-2) vs. Norris (2-2), Griffin (4-0) vs. Verlander (3-3), Darvish (4-2) vs. Boyd (2-3)

The hard charging Rangers have won nine straight coming into this series -- all as favorites, but come into this series as an underdog which I believe offers great value. Yu Darvish comes off a fantastic outing and should win on Sunday and A.J. Griffin is having a career year so far and should be able compete with Justin Verlander on Saturday. Most of all, this Rangers squad is on fire. Why stop betting them to win? Also, Texas has won nine of the past 12 meetings. And something to also think of this weekend if that Detroit is 2-7 in their last nine games as a favorite.

NY Yankees (24-14) at Tampa Bay (21-22)
Series Price: Yankees -125, Rays +105
Scheduled Rotation: Severino (2-2) vs. Ramirez (2-0), Tanaka (5-2) vs. Andriese (3-1), Sabathia (3-2) vs. Archer (3-2)

The first-place Yankees are up +8.4 units of profit for bettors and lead baseball with a +1.6 average margin of victory (5.8 to 4.2). They've been a great 'over' team at 23-15 which is a winner for bettors 60.5 percent of the time. Early on the Yankees were looked at as a team that was great at home but struggled on the road, but now they're the road warriors going 8-2 in their last 10 on the road. Something to take note of in this series is that the Rays have been cashing in as underdogs going 6-2 in their last eight.

Kansas City (17-23) at Minnesota (20-17)
Series Price: Twins -130, Royals +110
Scheduled Rotation: Karns (2-2) vs. Santiago (4-2), Kennedy (0-3) vs. Wilk (0-1), Hammel (1-5) vs. Hughes (4-2)

The Royals are 3-9 in their last 12 road games and 3-10 in their last 13 as a favorite, so be careful this weekend even though they're hitting the ball with much more authority than the first five weeks of the season. The Twins have gone 8-3-1 to the 'over' in their last 12 home games, but the road has been where they've had more success. They're 11-5 on the road and only 9-12 at home. However, they're in first-place of the ultra-competitive AL Central. It's only a one-game lead over the Tigers and Indians, but it's still impressive considering they were supposed to finish last in the division. Last is where the Royals are and they have the worst margin of victory in the AL at -42 runs.
