    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Odds to win the Heisman Trophy this fall:

15-2– Darnold (USC), Mayfield (Oklahoma), Jackson (Louisville)

    9-1– Barrett (Ohio State)

    12-1– Browning (Washington)

    14-1– Francois (Florida State)

15-1– Hurts (Alabama), Barkley (Penn State)

    16-1– Rudolph (Oklahoma State)

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Happy Mothers’ Day…….

    13) On July 2, 1963, the Giants beat the Braves 1-0 in 16 innings. Willie Mays won the game with a home run. Until Buster Posey’s walk-off in the 17th inning Friday night, that was the latest walk-off HR in Giants’ history.

This would get people fired today: both starting pitchers in that game (Warren Spahn, Juan Marichal) PITCHED THE WHOLE GAME!!!! Spahn faced 56 batters, Marichal 59.

Warren Spahn pitched 11+ innings fourteen times in his career.

    12) Umpire Tony Randazzo is a tough human; he worked the plate at the Reds-Giants game late Friday night and he took a beating. Four different baseballs hit him at some point, including one direct shot to the chin of his mask, which knocked him flat for a few minutes, but he continued.

Eventually, the game went into the wee hours and after the 13th inning, Randazzo had enough and left the game, with Clint Fagan taking over, but not until he had called pitches for over four hours. Difficult job.

    11) Extra-inning games in San Francisco are odd; the seagulls swoop in off the bay to get their dinner from the trash left in the outfield bleachers, but if the game is still going on, it can make things unpleasant for people still sitting in those bleachers.

No doubt about it, though; extra inning baseball is tremendous. Just better without seagulls.

    10) Seattle Mariners’ four best starting pitchers are all on the DL, plus Robinson Cano is banged up. Astros could easy run away with the AL West.

    9) Jim Delany is the commissioner of the Big 14 Conference; in 2015, he made $2.4M. The league is making so much money off its TV deals, Delany is set to receive bonus payments that could add up to a total of $20M. Wow.

Funny thing is this: Delany’s $2.4M salary is LESS than what the commissioners of the ACC, Pac-12, Big X and SEC all make. It is good to be one of those guys.

    8) Former Baylor basketball player Rico Gathers spent last season on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad; the Cowboys expect him to make the 53-man roster this season as a tight end.

    7) One of the problems with interleague play comes with rainouts; lot less places to put a postponed game on the schedule when you only visit that city once a year. It creates lot of day/night twinbills; there are two of those today, in Washington and in the Bronx.

    6) Can’t even imagine what it is like to be a NASCAR driver during one of those big wrecks- they’re trained with what to do, obviously, but you see a car’s wheels leave the ground and maybe some flames and it has to be scary as hell.

    5) Ottawa 2, Pittsburgh 1 OT– Senators lost a game 8-5 in Pittsburgh back in December; they’ve won three in a row against the Penguins since then, allowing three goals.

    4) Cody Bellinger is a star rookie for the Dodgers now, but he said when he was in high school, he wasn’t recruited by Arizona or Arizona State, even though he grew up in Scottsdale- had he not signed with the Dodgers, Bellinger would’ve played college ball for the Oregon Ducks.

Colorado Rockies TV guys said this: “Maybe that’s why Arizona State is 21-25 this year.”

    3) Nationals 6, Phillies 4– Bryce Harper celebrated his new contract with a walk-off HR after Nationals had been rained out the last two days. These teams have a day/night doubleheader Sunday.

    2) Cardinals 5, Cubs 3– World Champs are 18-18, in 4th place in a tightly bunched NL Central.

    1) Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there (I’m sure tons of moms read this site….lol). Anyway, make sure you call your mom if you can and wish her a Happy Mother’s Day.

This simple MLB interleague strategy could be the best kept secret in baseball betting

The Yankees swept the Cubs at Wrigley Field this month and are 8-3 versus National League foes in 2017, adding to the 34-21 record for AL clubs in interleague play this season.

Say what you want about MLB interleague play, it could be the best kept baseball betting secret around.

The annual matchups between American and National League teams have produced an incredible return on investment if you simply took the Junior Circuit (AL) to beat the Senior Circuit (NL) each and every time out over the past 13 years.

The American League won the interleague battle every season during that time frame, boasting a collective 1,897-1,571 record versus the National League between 2004 and 2016. Blindly betting $100 on the AL team in these games would have made you $16,935 richer during that span.

This trend continues in 2017, with American League clubs holding a 34-21 edge over National League competition heading into Sunday’s schedule – good for $1,093 (if you bet $100 on all 55 interleague games so far).

The bulk of those long-term profits have come when the American League representative plays host to the National League. American League teams are 1,054-706 at home in interleague action the past 14 seasons, including an impressive 19-7 home record this year ($1,071).

Despite moneyline odds padded toward the home side in those matchups, AL clubs have stacked $12,283 in baseball betting profits in those contests since 2004. They’ve outscored their visiting NL foes by an average final score of 4.91-4.11 in those games, including a 4.46-3.26 average so far in 2017.

MLB Power Rankings Week 6: Nats stay on top
Finally! A team was able to hold on to the top spot in our MLB Power Rankings from Covers Expert Steve Merril and that team is the Washington Nationals.

On the road, the American League is just 877-886 (.497) in National League parks in that same span – a far cry from its .599 winning clip at home – but has still turned up $5,775 in earnings for $100 bettors thanks to slimmer moneyline prices – many as a plus-money underdog. The American League has won by a slim margin, averaging a 4.28-4.03 final score in those road outings.

The lion’s share of those collective road interleague profits were won in 2012 when AL teams were 72-54 in NL parks ($2,385) and last season, when they went 83-67 on road in interleague ($2,217). Outside of those two years, the American League has won only $1,173 visiting the National League in the remaining 12 campaigns. This season, the AL is just 15-14 visiting the NL for a modest return of $22.

Looking back at the interleague records, the American League has produced a moneyline profit against the National League in all but three of the previous 16 seasons: 2004 (127-125 for -$360), 2011 (131-121 for -$343), and 2013 (167-133 for -$514).

The biggest windfall for American League backers came in 2008 when the AL smashed the NL 149-103 and banked $3,228 for anyone blindly betting $100 on that trend. Last year, interleague play produced a 165-135 edge for the Junior Circuit which panned out to $1,154 in cold hard interleague earnings.

The Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres are wrapping their interleague set on the South side Sunday, with the teams splitting the first two games of the series. Interleague action continues Monday, when the Toronto Blue Jays host the Atlanta Braves for two games before heading to Atlanta for a pair and the Houston Astros visit the Miami Marlins for a three-game set.
