    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds for the Players Championship this weekend in Florida:
    7-1—Dustin Johnson
    10-1—Rory McIlroy
    12-1—Jordan Spieth
    15-1—Sergio Garcia
    20-1—Day-Rahm-Rose-Fowler-Matsuyama
    30-1—Scott-Stenson-Thomas-Koepka-Casey

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

    13) Reds’ rookie pitcher Amir Garrett is 3-2, 4.25 in his first six major league starts, but was sent back to AAA by the Reds this week, to “manage his innings” according to the Reds. Teams don’t like younger pitchers to throw 20%+ more innings than they did the year before, they say it leads to injuries.

Here is what it really is: Cincinnati wants to manage Garrett’s service time, so they can keep him an extra year before he becomes arbitration-eligible. They’re pretty sure now that Garrett is a keeper, so they’re going to keep him in AAA for a few weeks, again to control his big league service time.

But here’s the thing; the Reds are in first place- you’d think that would matter to them, and they’d try to drum up some enthusiasm in the community, instead of sending a promising young pitcher down to save a few bucks down the road.

    12) At one point last year, the Chicago Cubs were 40-16; as I type this, they’re 17-16 this year, so it isn’t inconceivable that the NL Central could be wide open this season.

    11) Miami Marlins are having a hard time with Joe West’s umpiring crew this week; Don Mattingly got tossed the last two nights- last nite, he was told to take a hike in the bottom of the 1st inning, after Adam Wainwright had thrown 11 pitches. Christian Yelich got called out on an awful pitch and he got tossed, too. Marlins have injury issues; which makes Yelich getting tossed early even more damaging.

    10) Orioles will be without closer Zach Britton (forearm) until the All-Star break, very bad news for them.

    9) I wasn’t aware that starting pitchers work out after they come out of games; Kendall Graveman did his workout Monday night after his seven innings, then took a shower and put uniform gear back on to watch the 11th inning in the dugout as the A’s beat the Angels 3-2.

    8) Astros 8, Braves 3—Houston scored five runs before they made an out in this game. Bartolo Colon is struggling badly this season- his ERA is 7.22. Tuesday was 15th anniversary of a game in 2002 when AJ Hinch homered off of Colon—Hinch is the Astros’ manager now.

    7) Orioles 5, Nationals 4 (12)– This was 10th time since joining Washington that Max Scherzer carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, the most in the major leagues during that time.

Whatever Buck Showalter makes managing the Orioles, it ain’t enough. He is the best manager in baseball. Look at his pitching staff and explain to me how they’re 22-10.

    6) Brewers 11, Red Sox 7—Eric Thames hit his 13th homer here; someone who is playing in Korea this year is going to get a major league look next year, based in part on Thames’ success in Milwaukee this season. Whatever he worked on in his three years in Korea, it sure as hell has worked for him.

    5) Senators 4, Rangers 2—Couple of Canadian teams are still alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Ottawa advances to play the Pittsburgh-Washington survivor.

    4) Spurs 110, Rockets 107 OT—Hard-fought game between two really good teams; Kawhi Leonard got hurt, which is huge going forward. Houston was only 16-48 on the arc.

    3) Rangers-Sabres will freeze their butts off outdoors in Queens next winter on New Years’ Day, as the NHL Winter Classic comes to New York City. These events have been popular; I personally can’t think of a worse way to spend a winter afternoon than being outdoors.

    2) Jonathan Simmons once paid $150 to try out for a D-League team; now he’s a key contributor for the Spurs. Is this a great country or what?

    1) Former President Jimmy Carter came out this week and said he voted for Bernie Sanders for President; yikes. These are certainly strange times we’re living in.

                  Wednesday's Diamond Notes
                  May 10, 2017

Hottest team: Dodgers (4-0 past four games, 9-2 past 11 overall)

The Dodgers have been pushing all the right buttons lately. L.A. had a little Chavez Ravine magic in Tuesday's game, coming from behind to top Ivan Nova and the Pirates in extra innings. Chalk eaters have been making out like bandits lately, risking 814 to win 400 during the team's four-game winning streak. They'll turn to Kenta Maeda to keep it rolling. He posted a win in San Diego last time out, and he has allowed just three earned runs with 16 strikeouts over the past 12 innings after giving up 17 earned runs across 19 innings in his first four appearances.

Coldest team White Sox (2-7 past nine games)

The White Sox have fallen on hard times, dropping four in a row and seven of the past nine overall. They turn to southpaw Derek Holland to end their losing skid. He is the last pitcher to record a win, and he has picked up victories in two of the past three Chicago wins dating back to April 29. While the White Sox have dropped four in a row against winning teams and four of their past five against right-handed starters, they're a perfect 4-0 in Holland's past four outings against divisional foes. The White Sox are also 21-10 across their past 31 at home against teams with a road winning percentage of .600 or better.

Hottest pitcher: Derek Holland, White Sox (3-2, 2.20 ERA)

Holland might not have the most attractive record in five decisions, but he has turned in a sparkling 2.20 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP and .191 opponent batting average through 35 2/3 innings across six starts. He has also turned in an impressive 30/12 K/BB ratio which serves him well. The Twins rank 27th in strikeouts, but Holland will still post solid numbers at home. The opposition is hitting just .167 against him at U.S. Cellular Field, and he struck out five Twins while allowing just two earned runs over six innings in his first meetings with Minnesota back on April 7.

Coldest pitcher: Kenta Maeda, Dodgers (2-2, 5.81 ERA)

Maeda has started to piece it together lately, and he looks to keep the Dodgers hot. Overall the pitcher has an awful 5.81 ERA and 1.32 WHIP while the opposition has a robust .271 batting average against him. That includes 20 earned runs over 31 innings, including seven homers allowed over 31 innings. The Pirates will likely be angry after blowing a late lead in Tuesday's game, and they won't give Maeda much to work with. Pittsburgh's offense does rank 28th in the majors with just 121 runs scored and a .230 team batting average, so there is hope.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (5-1 past six games, 8-3 past 11 outings)

The 'under' run by Arizona will certainly be tested with Tigers LHP Matt Boyd being opposed by minor-league call-up SP Zack Godley. The 'over' is also 4-0 in Detroit's past four overall, and 6-0 in their past six against a right-handed starting pitcher. However, there is hope, as the 'under' is 6-2-1 in Boyd's past nine road starts and 3-1-1 in his past five overall. The 'under' is 4-1 in Arizona's past five interleague games against a team with a left-handed starter, but the 'over' is 7-0 in Godley's past seven assignments and 5-0 in his past five at home. That 'under' streak will be tested hard.

Biggest OVER run: Athletics (8-1 past nine games)

After an 'under' result in Monday's series opener against the Halos, it was back to 'overs' in Tuesday's game, a 7-3 setback. That's now eight over results over the past nine games, and a 7-3 mark over the past 10 at home for the Athletics. The over is also 5-1 in Oakland's past six tries against a right-handed starter and 4-0 in their past four games following a loss In addition, the over is a perfect 5-0 in their past five tries against a starter with a WHIP of 1.30 or greater. The Angels are also on an over kick, going 5-2-1 in their past eight outings.

Matchup to watch: Brewers vs. Red Sox

The Red Sox and Brewers had a slugfest in Tuesday's interleague opener, as Boston was bested 13-7 while Eric Thames belted his league-leading 13th home run. Boston has won just six of its past 19 games on the road, although they're an impressive 8-3 in the past 11 road games against a team with a losing home mark. The Brewers are just 1-4 in Tyler Anderson's past five starts at home, but they're 5-2 in their past seven at home overall. Milwaukee has also turned in victories in five of the past six against teams with a winning overall record.

Betcha didn’t know: The Pirates turn to Chad Kuhl in Wednesday's outing, and he likely will not have to face Andrew Toles, who left Tuesday's game with a knee injury. Kuhl has yielded two or fewer earned runs in five of his six starts overall, but he is 0-1 with a 2.76 ERA across three road outings. He was also 2-0 with a 4.09 ERA in two assignments against Los Angeles in 2016, so don't overlook him. Maeda of the Dodgers coughed up four runs across five innings in a loss June 25, 2016 in his only previous career start against the Bucs.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-230) vs. Pirates

Biggest public underdog: Blue Jays (+145) vs. Indians

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-180 to -230) vs. Pirates
