    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

    — Thunder 115, Rockets 113— Four of five Thunder starters scored in double figures.

    — Clippers 111, Jazz 106— Chris Paul had 34 points, 10 assists. LA leads series, 2-1.

    — Bruins 3, Ottawa 2, 2OT— Boston staves off elimination with a goal 30:19 into overtime.

    — Capitals 2, Maple Leafs 1, OT— Four of five series games have gone to OT.

    — Arizona 13, Dodgers 5— Diamondbacks scored nine runs in bottom of the 8th.

    — Blue Jays 8, Angels 7 (13)— Game ended at 3:46am here in New York.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here……..

    13) Madison Bumgarner is on the DL with rib/shoulder injuries he got in a dirt-bike accident on an off-day in Denver. Rough news for the Giants.

    12) Giants were already 0-4 in Bumgarner’s starts (0-3, 3.00) this season- they scored a total of five runs in the four games.

    11) Eric Thames hit 21 homers in 684 plate appearances for Toronto/Seattle in 2011-12, then his career tailed off- he wound up playing three years in Korea. Now he is back in the majors with the Brewers, and he is batting .415 with 8 homers in 62 PA’s, making him an early candidate for Comeback Player of the Century.

    10) Cincinnati Reds have to be thrilled with rookie pitcher Amir Garrett, who at one time was a basketball player at St John’s. In his first three big league starts, Garrett is 2-1, 1.83, with 21 strikeouts and only 14 hits allowed in 19.2 IP.

    9) Thursday nite, the Pacers led Cleveland 74-49 at halftime; a daring gambler at Ellis Island Casino in Las Vegas wagered $55 at 25-1 odds on the Cavaliers to win this game. He cashed in for $1,375. Not a bad hour’s work.

    8) Russell Westbrook was 4-18 in the 4th quarter of Game 2 in Houston; he was 13-25 in first three quarters. Thunder are hard to watch- they have no real second scoring option.

    7) Bulls PG Rajon Rondo has a broken thumb, is out indefinitely for the Bulls, who lead Boston 2-0 in their first round series.

    6) When you see a baseball game where there are no walks and 26 strikeouts, you assume that:

Randy Johnson and Dwight Golden were pitching
There was a pitchers’ umpire behind the plate.Since the starting pitchers were Patrick Corbin/Clayton Richard, we can safely assume that umpire Gerry Davis is a pitchers’ umpire.

    5) NBA referee Danny Crawford has worked 293 playoff games in his career, 33 Finals games.

    4) NFL centralized instant replay this season, under assumption that Dean Blandino would lead the effort in New York City to make the replay process more streamlined.

Then Blandino bolted the NFL for a TV job with a yet-to be-named network, leaving the NFL without a logical replacement for him. Mike Pereira would be ideal, but he already has a good job.

    3) I wanted to watch a TV show on the IFC channel this week, then I realized I had never seen a show on this channel and had no idea what channel it was on DirecTV (it is 333). You learn something new every day.

2a) Mike D’Antoni was 279-161 as coach of the Phoenix Suns; since he left, the Suns are 332-390 in regular season games.

2b) Oakland A’s were 256-176 while they had Yoenis Cespedes on their roster; since they traded him on July 31, 2014, they are 165-229.

Sometimes you’re better off keeping things the way they are. Not all change is positive.

1— Hope it doesn’t rain in LA in early September; Rams play Colts/Redskins at home on Sept 10th/17th, day after USC plays Stanford/Texas on the 9th/16th. Field will take a beating.

If it were to rain during that time, you’ll get a quagmire like the 1977 playoff game in the Coliseum when the Rams lost 14-7 to a very inferior Minnesota team. It was so muddy it was hard to tell which players were on which team.

Why did I remind myself of that?

MLB Daily Line Drive: Saturday's picks, betting odds and analysis

The Rangers only seem to be able to score via the long ball, while the Royals can't seem to score at all. The O/U for today's matchup is 9.

The baseball schedule can be tough to navigate for even a seasoned bettor. We break down all the day's MLB betting angles for you including picks, trends, weather and analysis to help you handicap the big leagues like a pro.

                Double-Play Picks

Kansas City Royals at Texas Rangers (-125, 9)

It’s been a rocky start to the season for both the Royals and Rangers, who can’t quite seem to put it all together at this point.

The Royals are the owners of the MLB’s worst offense, managing just 2.69 runs per game, while also ranking 29th in team batting average and OPS. Meaning the Royals have grinded their way to this point in the season leaning heavily on their pitching. They rank fifth in team ERA and are second in quality starts.

Meanwhile the Rangers, are a bit of a conundrum. They rank seventh in scoring, but are dead last in team batting average and rank 23rd in team OPS. Their saving grace? They hit a lot of dingers. They are third in the majors in home runs, but that is essentially all they do.

But dingers could be hard to come by Saturday as Texas is up against Kennedy, who has gotten off to a good start this season with a 2.37 ERA and an opponent’s OBP of just .267.

Oh yeah. The Royals have also gone Under in eight straight games, while the Rangers are 2-6 O/U in their last eight.

                Pick: Under 9

Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds (+160, 7.5)

This is exactly the start to the season many predicted for the defending champion Cubbies. Even fewer probably thought they would be playing a series near the end of April against the Reds in a battle for first place. But that’s where we are.

The Reds came flying out of the gates with a 7-2 start, but have cooled off since then, going just 2-6 in their last eight games.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are starting to find their stride, winning three in a row against division opponents scoring 7.3 runs per game in the process.

Chicago sends Jake Arrieta to the mound Saturday to take on the Reds’ Cody Reed. Arrieta is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA and has recorded 21 strikeouts to just five walks in his three starts, while Reed is making his first start of the season.

To make things tougher on Cincinnati, the Cubs are 6-0 in their last 6 games versus a left-handed starter and the Reds are 0-10 in Reeds last 10 starts. It may be chalky, but it’s worth it.

                Pick: Cubs -175

                Yesterday's Picks: 1-1
                Season to Date: 7-9

                Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                Streaking:
Jacob deGrom, New York Mets (0-0, 1.89 ERA, $-220)

deGrom had his start pushed back one day due to some minor neck stiffness, but heading into Saturday’s contest against the Nationals not many pitchers have been looser.

deGrom has three no decisions on the year, but through no fault of his own. He has pitched to a 1.89 ERA in three starts racking up 22 strikeouts to just four walks. This is highlighted by his last outing in which he struck out 13 batters in seven innings of work, while allowing 2 runs on four hits. Mets are currently -120 home favorites.

                Slumping:
Steven Wright, Boston Red Sox (1-1, 8.36 ERA, $-138)

A year after going 13-6, with a 3.33 ERA and making his first All-Star appearance, it has been a rough start to the 2017 season for Wright.

The 32-year-old knuckle-baller has only pitched 14 innings in his three starts, allowing 13 earned runs on 24 hits, including five home runs. That has resulted in a massive 8.36 ERA and a troubling 2.00 WHIP. The Red Sox are +105 for their matchup with the Orioles.

                Saturday’s Top Trends

                * The Royals are 0-8 in the last 8 meetings with the Rangers. Royals +105
                * The Under is 7-0 in Rockies last seven games vs. a left-handed starter. O/U: 10.5 vs. Giants.
                * The Over is 6-0 in Angels last six home games. O/U: 9 vs. Blue Jays.
                * The Under is 6-0 in the White Sox last six games following a loss. O/U: 8 vs. Indians.

Weather to Keep an Eye on

It could be a little messy in Queens, New York when the Mets host the Washington Nationals. There will be a 56 percent chance of rain around first pitch, but the forecast is expected to clear up during the day. Temperatures will be in the high 50's and there will be a bit of a pitchers wind blowing in from left field at nine to 10 miles per hour. The total is currently 7.5.

Meanwhile in Texas, hitters in today's Royals-Rangers could be given a hand. While the forecast is calling for clear skies and temperatures in the mid 60's, there will be a strong htiters wind gusting out to right field at 18-20 miles per hour. The total for this contest is currently 9.

                UMP of the Day

CB Buckner: Despite a low strike rate in 2017 of just 61.3 percent, Bucknor has become quite the Under umpire, with teams playing below the total in the last eight games he has officiated. The Under is 74-67 over the last five years in which Bucknor has called balls and strikes. He will be behind the plate for today's game in Tampa Bay between the Astros and Rays. The total is currently 8.5.
