  • Wednesday’s six-pack

    — Tom Brady has a sprained left shoulder, is expected to play against the Jets Sunday.

    — Game 4 of Cubs-Nationals got rained out; they’ll try again Wednesday at 4:00.

    — Texas Southern’s basketball team has 13 pre-conference games, all true road games.

    — Mets bought a AAA farm team in Syracuse, so Las Vegas 51’s will have a new parent club next season.

    — Bucs signed Patrick Murray as their new kicker; Fordham grad can also punt and once played Gaelic football in high school.

    Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) San Francisco 49ers are 25th NFL team since 1997 to play overtime games on consecutive weekends; Niners lost both games, are now 0-5, with last four losses all by 2 or 3 points.

    12) Of the previous 24 teams who played consecutive OT games, four had a bye the following week, so that takes us down to 20 teams- those 20 teams went 10-10 SU in the third week, but 12-7-1 against the spread.

    11) A breakdown according to how the teams did in the OT games:
WW?— Teams that won both OT games went 2-2 vs spread in that third game.
WL?— Teams were 1-3 vs spread in the third game.
LL?— Teams were 4-2-1 vs spread; this is where the 49ers trend this week.
LW?— Teams were 5-0 vs spread in the third game.

    10) For the record, Baltimore has played OT games on consecutive weekends four times in the last 21 years; no one else has done it more than twice.

    9) Ironic that with lot of college basketball coaches in hot water over fraud allegations with the shoe companies, the 16-team PK80 tournament taking place in Oregon next month to honor Phil Knight’s 80th birthday will be a big deal.

16 teams, all Nike-affiliated, will play three games in this event; might make it easier for the FBI to serve their subpoenas, with so many teams in the same city all at once.

    8) Thru 4.5 games this season, Chicago Bears didn’t have a pass play longer than 30 yards, the only NFL team without one. Finally Chicago scored on a 38-yard TD pass in the third quarter Monday night; problem is, it was a pass thrown by punter Pat O’Donnell on a fake punt. Oy.

    7) Mitchell Trubisky is the 30th starting QB for the Bears in the last 25 years.

    6) San Diego State is bowl-eligible already, which means coach Rocky Long gets a $50,000 bonus, and the athletic director, for some reason, gets a $12,500 bonus.

    5) New Orleans Saints traded RB Adrian Peterson to the Cardinals Tuesday for a conditional draft pick. Why would a RB without great receiving skills have signed with a Payton/Brees team in the first place? Arizona’s skill players have lot of miles on them; we’ll see if this helps them.

    4) Greg Bird hit a home run in a 1-0 playoff game the other day; the first player to ever hit a home run in a 1-0 postseason game was Casey Stengel in 1923, he of course went on to be a famous manager in New York City, but he was also a good player, hitting .284 in 14 MLB seasons.

    3) Political trivia: when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was in college, he was a drummer in the University of Texas marching band.

    2) I’m glad the NFL lightened up and allows (most) celebrations after TDs now. They don’t hurt anyone and I think most people like them. Maybe most importantly. the media likes them and over time, that will help the public’s perception of the league, which could use some help.

    1) RIP to the great QB YA Tittle, who played 17 years in the NFL with Colts-49ers-Giants; his W-L record was 78-50-5, but he never won a playoff game (0-4). Keep in mind it was a lot harder to make the playoffs back then. Mr Tittle passed away over the weekend at age 90.

Tittle was also one of the opposing coaches against Al Pacino’s Miami Sharks in the excellent football movie Any Given Sunday. RIP, sir.

            ALDS Game 5 Betting Preview (FS1, 8:05 p.m. ET)
New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Indians
Wednesday, Oct. 11 from Progressive Field

At the beginning of this ALDS matchup there aren't many out there who thought it would go the distance as the young Yankees were gaining valuable playoff experience ahead of schedule against the defending AL champs. After two games it looked like it would go that way with Cleveland up 2-0, but New York did what they needed to at home and now have the opportunity to steal one on the road and face Houston in the ALCS.

With the mashing lineup the Yankees have, they definitely have a “puncher's chance” tonight, but to get the job done they are going to have to rough up Cleveland ace Corey Kluber again.

BetOnline.ag Odds: New York (+175), Cleveland (-186); Total set at 7.5

This Game 5 pitching matchup is the exact same one we saw in Game 2 when Kluber squared off against Sabathia and that was by far the wildest game of the entire series. New York knocked around Kluber early, built an 8-3 lead, and then watched it evaporate over the last few innings (albeit on a blown non-challenge by manager Joe Girardi) to ultimately lose 9-8 in extra innings.

If Girardi challenges that HBP, we could already have the Yankees in the ALCS, so from New York's perspective they still aren't getting quite the respect they deserve. Yes, Kluber has been one of the AL's best starters all year, but New York's lineup exposed him when he wasn't at his sharpest.

Obviously most of this steep price in favor of Cleveland is due to them being at home with Kluber on the hill and the talented lineup they do have, but New York starting the veteran Sabathia doesn't exactly exude confidence on paper for bettors looking for reasons to back the Yankees.

Sabathia is a guy that got roughed up quite a bit in 2017, but he was solid in Game 2 after a few early hiccups. He was painting corners, getting plenty of swings and misses (5 K's), and if it weren't for the three walks he allowed and a couple of errors behind him, his 5.1 IP stat line would have looked a lot better. And there is always something to be said about having plenty of playoff experience on your resume in a Game 5 scenario.

So if I had a gun to my head on betting a ML winner in this game tonight, I'd probably take the value with New York at +175, although I do believe the Indians are more likely to win. Those odds suggest New York only wins tonight about 36% of the time and I'd push it a little higher to around 40%. Remember, this still is a team soaking in all this valuable playoff experience, and while they do have a Wild Card win under their belt, a Game 5/Game 7 scenario after a long, hard-fought series is a bit different.

The side is not where I am looking to get my money down though, as this total of 7.5 has the majority of bettors seeing “red” after Game 2's scoring barrage with these two starters on the hill. Game 2's total of 7 cashed 'over' tickets by the time the top of the 3rd was finished, and VegasInsider.com's betting percentage numbers show that the 'over' for tonight's game is getting hit at a 75% clip. Yet even with those splits, it's only been the price that's fluctuated back and forth by 5+ cents, as not everyone believes this will be as easy an 'over' as the majority do.

You can count me in that small group of bettors going the other way here, as the winner-take-all pressure of Game 5, the cooler, rainy weather forecast with win blowing in from right, and the two battle-tested and dominant at times starters turn this game into a pitcher's duel.

Kluber is a guy that rarely has two rough outings in a row, and Game 2's struggles really came out of nowhere. Prior to that outing he hadn't allowed more than two runs against since August 23rd – a seven-game stretch of what was basically sheer dominance. Game 2 was also the first time in six starts against the Yankees that he allowed more than two runs against , and in all five of those previous outings he went at least eight innings in each one.

Cleveland is on a 1-6 O/U run in Kluber's last seven starts at home, 3-10-1 O/U wehn he pitches on just four days of rest, and are used to playing low-scoring games at home in October as they are 4-9-2 O/U in their last 15 in that situation. I fully expect Kluber to be at his best tonight – another reason why it's tougher to pull the trigger on the “value” on New York +175 – and that does not bode well for a Yankees lineup that is prone to the strikeout.

Similarly, Sabathia will be up to the challenge of going toe-to-toe with Kluber, at least for the first 5+ innings before New York's bullpen comes in to either hold on to a narrow lead or keep their team within striking distance. Sabathia's strong performance in Game 2 got lost in the shuffle with the Girardi non-challenge and the Yankees blown lead making all the headlines, but the veteran Yankees starter was painting corners and leaving Cleveland hitters shaking their heads when he wasn't walking guys.

Knowing how important base runners are in a Game 5 scenario, Sabathia should clean up those walks tonight and continue painting those corners and leaving Indians hitters at a loss. New York is 3-9 O/U in his last 12 starts on the road and 5-15-1 O/U in his last 21 against a winning team, so look for this game to stay below this 7.5 total.

All the odd numbered games in this series (Game 1, 3) have been low-scoring affairs with one team getting shutout. Although both teams should cross the plate in Game 5, expect that random pattern to continue tonight as this game tops out at 7 runs.

            Best Bet: Under 7.5 Runs

            • Report: RHP Strasburg may now start Game 4 for Nationals
              October 11, 2017

The Washington Nationals may now start right-hander Stephen Strasburg in Wednesday afternoon's Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs.

Strasburg is likely to start for the Nationals, a source told MLB.com. A pitching change from earlier announced starter Tanner Roark has not been confirmed by the team.

Game 4 at Wrigley Field was postponed by rain Tuesday night, giving the Nationals a chance to start Strasburg on regular rest being down 2-1 in the best-of-five series.

However, manager Dusty Baker made a surprise announcement when he said Roark would still start because Strasburg was "under the weather."

The Cubs will turn to their scheduled Game 4 starter, Jake Arrieta, on Wednesday looking to finish off the series.

Strasburg held the Cubs without a hit for 5 2/3 innings in Game 1 before Chicago pulled out a 3-0 victory.

Baker told reporters Tuesday night that Strasburg would start Game 5 if the series went that far.

"It's fine," Baker said. "We have full confidence in Tanner."

              Red Sox fire manager Farrell
              October 11, 2017

The Boston Red Sox fired manager John Farrell on Wednesday, two days after his team was eliminated from the playoffs.

Farrell, who managed the Red Sox since 2013, will not return for the 2018 season, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announcement. The team said a search for a new manager will begin immediately.

Farrell, 55, was 432-378 (.533) in five seasons, leading the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2013. He was under contract through the end of the 2018 season.

The Red Sox were eliminated from the playoffs on Monday, losing to the Houston Astros 5-4 in Game 4 of the American League Division Series.

Boston finished 93-69 (.574) in 2017 to win its ninth AL East division title. The Red Sox had the third-best record in the American League, tied for fifth best in the majors.

During his Red Sox tenure, Farrell's teams won three division titles (2013, 2016, 2017). His 432 managerial wins and 810 games managed both rank sixth in club history, and he is the only manager ever to lead the Red Sox to consecutive division titles.

Farrell's first season in 2013 was highlighted by Boston's eighth World Series championship.

Farrell began his major league managerial career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011, leading the team to a 154-170 record over two seasons. In his seven full seasons as a manager, his clubs went 586-548 (.517).

Farrell's first professional coaching stint began with Boston in 2007 when he spent four seasons as pitching coach. Over that four-year span, the Red Sox had three postseason appearances (2007-09), including the 2007 World Series title.

              • Yanks complete comeback, beat Indians 5-2 in Game 5 of ALDS
                October 11, 2017

CLEVELAND (AP) Didi Gregorius, following in the October footprints left by Derek Jeter, homered twice off Corey Kluber as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 5-2 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to complete their comeback from a 2-0 deficit in the Division Series and dethrone the AL champions.

These bend-but-don't-break Yankees staved off elimination for the fourth time in this postseason and advanced to play the Houston Astros in the AL Championship Series starting Friday at Minute Maid Park.

The AL West champion Astros, led by 5-foot-6 second-base dynamo and MVP candidate Jose Altuve, went 5-2 against the wild-card winners this season.

After winning twice in New York, the Yankees - with little offensive help from rookie star Aaron Judge - came into Progressive Field and finished off the Indians, who won 102 games during the regular season, ripped off a historic 22-game streak and were favored to get back to the World Series after losing in seven games a year ago to the Chicago Cubs.

Cleveland's Series drought turns 70 next year - baseball's longest dry spell.

The Indians closed to 3-2 in the fifth against starter CC Sabathia before David Robertson pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings for the win. Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman, who faced Cleveland in last year's spine-tingling World Series and signed an $86 million free agent contract in December, worked two innings for the save.

Chapman went to the mound with a three-run lead in the ninth after Brett Gardner battled Cody Allen for 12 pitches before hitting an RBI single, with New York's fifth run scoring when Todd Frazier raced home on right fielder Jay Bruce's throwing error.

Gardner's gritty at-bat was symbolic of these Yankees. They wouldn't give in.

When Austin Jackson was called out on strikes to end it, the Yankees rushed to the mound to celebrate with a wide-eyed Chapman.

These baby Bronx Bombers became the 10th team to overcome a 2-0 deficit to win a best-of-five playoff series. New York also did it in 2001, rallying to beat Oakland - a series remembered for Jeter's backhand flip to home plate.

Gregorius, who took over at shortstop following Jeter's retirement after the 2014 season, hit a solo homer in the first off Kluber and added a two-run shot in the third off Cleveland's ace, who didn't look like himself during either start in this series.

One win shy of a Series title last year, the Indians had only one goal in mind in 2017.

They came up short again, and have now lost six consecutive games with a chance to clinch a postseason series dating to last year's World Series, when they squandered a 3-1 lead to the Chicago Cubs.

Cleveland is the first team in history to blow a two-game series lead in consecutive postseasons.

Everything was set up for the Indians: Kluber on the mound, Game 5 at home, sensational setup man Andrew Miller rested.

The Yankees, though, wouldn't be denied. They battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the first inning of their wild-card game against Minnesota and then had to overcome a crushing loss in Game 2, when manager Joe Girardi's decision not to challenge a hit batter, drew heavy criticism and possibly cost New York during in a 9-8 loss in 13 innings.

But these young Yankees, who are ahead of schedule to be contenders, displayed pinstriped pride.

''This team has never stopped fighting and never stopped believing,'' Girardi said before Game 5. ''That's the mark of a very good team. They know how to persevere and continue to grind out everything, whether it's an at-bat or it's on the other side, you're facing a batter, how you grind it out.''

The Yankees did it without much help from Judge, who struck out four times in Game 5, and went 1 for 20 (.050) in the series with 16 strikeouts.

But the 6-foot-7 rookie might have saved New York's season in Game 3, when he reached above the right-field wall to rob Francisco Lindor of a two-run homer in a 1-0 win.

Kluber was one of baseball's most consistent pitchers all season, winning 18 games and leading the AL with a 2.25 ERA. He's a favorite to win his second Cy Young Award.

However, October has been cruel to the right-hander. He allowed nine runs, including four homers, over 6 1/3 innings in two postseason starts, hardly what he or the Indians expected.

Gregorius came in batting just .077 (1 for 13) in the series and only .133 (2 of 15) in his career against Kluber before tagging the right-hander for two homers in the first three innings.

The 27-year-old with the easy smile and sweet swing gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead in the third, pulling an 0-1 pitch into the lower deck in right. Gregorius set a franchise record for home runs in a season by a shortstop with 25, one more than Jeter hit in 1999 when No. 2 led the Yankees to a second straight World Series title.

Just as in Game 2, Kluber didn't get out of the first unscathed.

Gregorius got New York off to an ideal start, homering with two outs in the first when Kluber grooved a fastball. The shot deep into the seats in right raised the anxiety level to an already jittery Cleveland crowd fearing the worst.

A few hours later, those fears were realized.

                • Strasburg, Nationals force Game 5
                  October 11, 2017

CHICAGO (AP) Stephen Strasburg gave Washington everything he had, and it was more than enough.

So much for all those questions about heart and character.

Strasburg shook off an illness and pitched seven dominant innings, Michael A. Taylor hit a late grand slam and the Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-0 on Wednesday to send their NL Division Series to a decisive Game 5.

''I just focused on one pitch at a time and going as long as I could,'' Strasburg said.

Moments after Sean Doolittle closed out Strasburg's first career playoff win, the focus shifted to the final game of the series in Washington on Thursday night. Kyle Hendricks starts for the World Series champion Cubs after throwing seven sharp innings in a 3-0 victory over Strasburg in Game 1.

Washington manager Dusty Baker was non-committal when asked about his starter, with Gio Gonzalez and Tanner Roark the most likely candidates.

''You know, whoever it is, I hope they pitch like Stras did today,'' Baker said.

                  No kidding.

Strasburg got sick after his terrific performance in the playoff opener on Friday, and the Nationals had planned to go with Roark even after a persistent rain washed out Game 4 on Tuesday. That led to a flurry of comments and criticism about whether the ace had the right stuff to pitch in big moments.

But Strasburg felt better when he woke up Wednesday and told Baker he wanted the ball. That was all Baker needed to hear.

''I could see the focus and determination in his eyes, you know what I mean, when he came in the office and we talked to him,'' the manager said. ''You know, he's a man of few words, but the words he said, you know, gave us every indication that he was ready.''

Standing tall as clouds of mist rolled through Wrigley Field, Strasburg struck out 12 , allowed three hits and walked two. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft has 22 Ks in 14 innings in the series, allowing only a pair of unearned runs in the sixth in the opener.

''I like to think that any game that I pitch is the most important game,'' Strasburg said. ''That's just how I tried to go into Game 4, and now we get a chance for a Game 5.''

Chicago wasted a gutsy performance from Jake Arrieta and solid relief by Game 2 starter Jon Lester in its first home playoff loss since Game 4 of the World Series last year. NL MVP Kris Bryant struck out four times, and the defending champs went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

''We just have to be offensively a little bit better tomorrow,'' Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. ''They have been really good. We have been really good. Listen, they got a grand slam. Otherwise, it's kind of like the same game both sides.''

Arrieta walked five in four innings in his return from a hamstring injury, but limited Washington to an unearned run and two hits. Lester got the Cubs all the way to the eighth, picking off Ryan Zimmerman before departing after Daniel Murphy's two-out single.

But Chicago's bullpen faltered from there. Carl Edwards Jr. walked two in a row and threw ball one to Taylor before he was replaced by Wade Davis. Taylor then drove a 1-1 pitch into the basket overhanging the brick wall in right field for his first career homer in the playoffs.

''I was kind of numb, just running around the bases,'' Taylor said. ''Honestly, I didn't think it was going to get out the way the wind was blowing in.''

Ryan Madson worked the eighth and Doolittle finished the three-hitter, giving the NL East champions a chance to avenge years of playoff heartache.

Washington also made it to the playoffs in 2012, 2014 and 2016 and fell in the first round each time, including five-game losses to St. Louis in 2012 and Los Angeles last season.

''Once you get out there, that stuff doesn't really matter,'' Taylor said. ''What we did last year doesn't help or hurt us once we're in between the lines. We'll just go out there and play our game.''

The Nationals jumped in front in the third, taking advantage of a Chicago error for the second straight game. Trea Turner doubled with one out for his first hit of the series and advanced on a wild pitch. Jayson Werth struck out looking before Arrieta walked Bryce Harper, putting runners on the corners.

Zimmerman followed with a slow roller to shortstop. Addison Russell charged the ball, but he couldn't bring it in.

It was Chicago's sixth error of the series, and reliever Brian Duensing picked up another one on an errant throw in the ninth. Left fielder Kyle Schwarber committed two errors on one play in Game 3, setting up Washington's only run in a 2-1 loss.

''It's two heavyweights going at it,'' Lester said. ''We're going to the last round. We're going to figure it out. We've got Game 5 so it should be exciting TV. It should be exciting in our clubhouse.''

                  • MLB notebook: Red Sox fire manager Farrell
                    October 11, 2017

The Boston Red Sox fired manager John Farrell on Wednesday, two days after his team was eliminated from the playoffs.

Farrell, who managed the Red Sox since 2013, will not return for the 2018 season, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced. The team said a search for a new manager will begin immediately.

"I thought it was the appropriate time to make a change for the betterment of the organization moving forward," Dombrowski said at a news conference. "You weigh a lot of different things to come into play. You watch day in, day out over a season. You come up with a decision based upon that. And for me, at this point, sometimes change can be better. That's why we've decided to move forward with the change."

Farrell, 55, was 432-378 (.533) in five seasons, leading the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2013. He was under contract through the end of the 2018 season.

--The Washington Nationals started right-hander Stephen Strasburg in Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the Chicago Cubs.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Tuesday night that Strasburg was too ill to start Wednesday's game before the dramatic reversal by the team.

The Nationals made the move official a few hours before 3:08 p.m. CT starting time.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told reporters Wednesday that Strasburg started to feel flu-like symptoms after starting Game 1, which continued the next couple of days. Rizzo said Strasburg experienced fever, chills and continued to feel poorly when he threw his bullpen session on Monday.

--Cleveland Indians designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion returned to the lineup for Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the New York Yankees at Progressive Field.

Encarnacion has been sidelined for the last two contests with a sprained ankle that was sustained in the first inning of Game 2. The 34-year-old Dominican was injured when he jammed his foot into second base while trying to get back to the bag in time to avoid a double play.

Encarnacion batted .258 with 38 homers and 107 RBIs in his first season of a three-year contract. It marked his third straight season with at least 30 homers and 100 RBIs.

                      • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

College football trends for this weekend:

                        — UConn is 8-19-1 in its last 28 games as a road underdog.

                        — Ohio U covered eight of its last ten true road games.

                        — Northern Illinois covered 7 of its last 9 games with Buffalo.

                        — Florida State covered its last six games against Duke.

                        — Minnesota covered 6 of its last 7 games with Michigan State.

                        — Northwestern is 5-10-1 vs spread in its last 16 games as a road favorite.

                        **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                        13) Red Sox fired John Farrell Wednesday; he went 432-378 as Boston’s manager, winning the World Series in his first season (2013) but winning only one playoff game (1-6) the last four years. Farrell had a health scare with cancer in 2015, but that is behind him now.

If the Red Sox hire Brad Ausmus, who worked with Boston GM Dave Dombrowski in Detroit, then it figures that the GM just thought that Ausmus is a better manager than Farrell.

This Tweet from writer Peter Abraham:
“Dombrowski said Farrell was fired for reasons he won’t disclose and that no level of team success would have prevented that.”

He would’ve fired Farrell even if the Red Sox won the World Series? Hard to believe.

                        12) Washington 5, Chicago 0- Game 5 is Thursday night at 8 in Washington.
New York 5, Cleveland 2— Indians lost last seven games when they had a chance to wrap up a series. New York-Houston ALCS starts Friday night.

                        11) New Jersey Giants suspended CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Wednesday when he came to practice and then went home without practicing- it apparently relates to something that happened on the sidelines during Sunday’s game with the Chargers.

                        10) Giants also lost 3 of their top 4 WR’s for the season in last week’s loss; of those four, only Sterling Shepard will be playing in Denver this weekend.

                        9) Utah Jazz big guy Rudy Gobert wears number 27 because he was the 27th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Not that he takes it personally or anything.

                        8) Butler Bulldogs are on their 4th basketball coach in the last six years, and they usually win. Texas Tech is on its 5th coach in eight years. Coaching can be a nomadic profession.

                        7) Guy named Tony Ressler owns the Atlanta Hawks; he is or was a minority owner of the Milwaukee Brewers. He has been married to actress Jami Gertz for 29 years— she was in movies like Less Than Zero, Sixteen Candles and Twister.

                        6) Minnesota Timberwolves have the longest active playoff drought in the NBA- 13 years.

                        5) Tennessee Vols are changing QB’s for their game with South Carolina this week; redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano gets the start over sophomore Quinten Dormady, who may transfer from Tennessee as a result of this.

                        4) Revenge in the CFL this week? On July 29, Calgary embarrassed Hamilton 60-1; Ti-Cats changed coaches shortly after that, and are now 4-2 in their last six games under new coach June Jones. Stampeders visit Hamilton this week on a serious roll; they’ve won 10 games in a row (8-1-1 vs spread).

                        3) South Alabama (+18) 19, Troy 8— Troy’s last game was an upset win at LSU, but teams that turn the ball over four times (-3) don’t win a whole lot.

                        2) Louisville brought in former Nevada/LSU coach Trent Johnson as an assistant, then fired assistant coach Jordan Fair, as fallout from the SneakerGate scandal continues to unfold.

                        1) If you have NBA TV and I think just about everyone does, Open Court is a good show to watch; there are two hour-long shows that were filmed this summer in Las Vegas, one with five NBA owners, the other with five coaches. Educational stuff if you like the NBA.

                          • Thursday's NLDS playoff betting preview and odds: Cubs at Nationals

                            Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals (A: -115, H: -105, Total: 7.5)

                            Series tied 2-2

With an assist from the weather, the Washington Nationals have forced a winner-take-all matchup against the visiting Chicago Cubs on Thursday in their National League Division Series. Stephen Strasburg’s stellar start in Washington’s 5-0 win in Game 4 on Wednesday sent the series back to the nation’s capital and left the Nationals with plenty of flexibility with their pitching staff.

Strasburg threw seven strong innings despite manager Dusty Baker’s announcement a night earlier that Chicago-area native Tanner Roark would start Game 4. That leaves Roark and left-hander Gio Gonzalez as potential Game 5 starters and gives Washington a fully stocked bullpen - including ace Max Scherzer - for the decisive contest. The Cubs’ bullpen is slightly more taxed after burning Game 2 Jon Lester on Wednesday, but Chicago will have Kyle Hendricks on the mound as he looks to continue a recent history of strong postseason performances. The Cubs have scored only eight runs in the series and managed just three hits in Wednesday’s setback.

Cubs - RP K. Uehara (Out Indefinitely, Knee).

Nationals - S. Drew (Out Indefinitely, Abdominal), LF R. Raburn (Out Indefinitely, Shoulder), SP J. Ross (Out For Season, Elbow), CF A. Eaton (Out For Season, Knee).

                            PITCHING MATCHUP:
Cubs RH Kyle Hendricks (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. TBA

Hendricks outdueled Strasburg in Game 1, allowing two hits and three walks while registering six strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. The 27-year-old has gotten the ball for the Cubs’ last two series clinchers – Game 6 of last year’s NL Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Game 7 of the World Series versus Cleveland. He is 2-1 with a 1.98 ERA in eight postseason starts.

Baker told reporters after Game 4 he is “not sure yet” who will start on Thursday and his decision will be based on who is the best fit. Gonzalez allowed three runs and three hits over five innings in Game 2 as the Nationals got him off the hook with a late rally. Roark has not started since Sept. 27 and gave up eight runs in 5 2/3 frames over his last two regular-season appearances (one start).

                            TRENDS:

                            * Cubs are 2-7 in their last 9 games with Jerry Layne behind home plate.

                            CONSENSUS:

CHICAGO -- The Nationals have yet to reach the National League Championship Series, as they were eliminated in the NL Division Series in each of their previous three postseason appearances since moving to Washington.

However, when the Nationals face the Chicago Cubs in the deciding game of the best-of-five NLDS on Thursday night in Washington, their past playoff shortcomings won't factor into their confidence.

At stake is a chance to advance to the NLCS to face the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Washington, after staving off elimination behind a dominant performance by right-hander Stephen Strasburg on Wednesday in a 5-0 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field, will continue to focus on the business at hand.

Anything else -- including attempting to make franchise history -- doesn't matter.

"I've kind of said this all year -- I don't believe in that because it's a different team every year," Nationals shortstop Trea Turner said of the club's past. "You play different teams, different players, trades, free agents -- whatever it may be.

"It doesn't really matter (what happened in prior years). ... Whoever plays better, whoever executes more, you're going to move on."

Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday he hasn't yet decided who will start for his team Thursday in the winner-take-all game. After Strasburg bumped right-hander Tanner Roark from his scheduled start on Wednesday, Baker said Roark could be a candidate to start Thursday against the Cubs.

But so could Gio Gonzalez, who took a no-decision in Game 2 of the NLDS. The left-hander allowed three runs and three hits over five innings, striking out six and walking two.

"We're going to make up our mind, see the condition of everybody," Baker said.

The Cubs faced elimination during the 2016 World Series after falling behind three games to one against the Cleveland Indians. Now, after failing to close out the Nationals at home on Wednesday night, manager Joe Maddon said he would attempt to keep his players even-keeled as they look to advance to the NLCS for the third straight year.

Chicago right-hander Kyle Hendricks, who got the win in Game 1 when he allowed just two hits and struck out six over seven innings, will start Game 5. Hendricks is 2-2 in five career starts against the Nationals and is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA against Washington this season, including the victory last week in Washington.

Given the fact his team has staved off elimination before, Maddon and his players are confident heading into Thursday. Yet after scoring just two runs in the last two games, the Cubs know they must be better on offense if they are to give Hendricks the support he needs.

"Our guys are ready to play," Maddon said after the Wednesday game. "It's been a really interesting series. Both teams have reflected one another pretty closely, and they got us tonight, and we have to fly back east and try to get them tomorrow night."

The Nationals face the same challenge.

"As a team, we feel good," said Michael A. Taylor, whose grand slam extended Washington's lead in Game 4. "We talked about it a little before the game about taking it one game at a time, and obviously, today was a necessary step to take it back to D.C. ... We're going back, and we'd just like to have another quality game."
