  • Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Some more NFL trends to ponder with Week 5 upon us……..

    — Chargers are 0-8-1 vs spread in their last nine games.

    — Panthers are 16-6 in last 22 games as a road underdog.

    — Jets are 4-10-3 in last 17 games as a road underdog.

    — Steelers are 10-3 vs spread in last 13 games as a non-divisional HF.

    — Cincinnati is 7-14 vs spread in its last 21 games.

    — Bears are 6-1-1 in last eight games as a home underdog.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

    13) I made a rare appearance in the Hannaford grocery store near my home Thursday; I eat out just about every day, so I don’t need a lot of groceries, but I had 5 or 6 items as I went to the checkout aisles. (If you must know, had Fig Newtons, Cherry Coke, hamburger rolls, Rice Krispies, hot dog rolls and milk.)

One aisle had 6 or 7 people waiting on line, so that wasn’t an option; I’m not fond of waiting on lines. The other aisle was the Express Aisle; 14 items or less. My kind of aisle, I was there.

I’m behind one woman in line, a woman with an entire shopping cart full of items. She starts taking the items out, and she obviously has more than 14, and thats counting the five 2-liter bottles of Pepsi as one item. She has 23 items; how do I know this? I counted them.

    12) Now I’m annoyed, because it is just a lack of respect for anyone other than herself; she looks to be around 50, a normal suburban person, except for the fact that she is taking 23 items thru the Express Aisle (14 items or less). I look at the young kid working the register, debating whether to make a fool of myself and call her on this indiscretion. I would’ve laughed if the cashier had refused to wait on Ms 23Items- he didn’t.

I’m bailed out by two other aisles being opened up just as I was about to make a decision; rather than create a scene, I just scoot over to the next aisle— I was out of the store before Ms 23Items got her bags into her shopping cart.

    11) In the larger scope of life, obviously none of this is important, but it points out how the basic respect we have for each other is decaying throughout society. No one cares about anyone except him/herself. We need to have more respect for other humans; it doesn’t cost anything, and it improves everyone’s quality of life. Less stress equals a better life.

    Elsewhere in the world…….
    10) Watching Justin Verlander pitch in the playoffs Thursday gave me the creeps; he’s made five playoff starts against the A’s and was 4-0, 1.23 in those games- the one game he didn’t win was when the A’s rallied from behind in the late innings to beat Detroit’s bullpen.

Verlander is two decent years away from being a Hall of Famer.

    9) How offense in the NFL is changing; the receiving leader for 7 of the 32 NFL teams is a running back. Teams are running ball less but are using RB’s out of the backfield to beat linebackers in individual matchups.

His first two years in the NFL, Todd Gurley caught 64 passes for 515 yards (8.0 yds/rec) in 29 games, with no touchdowns. In four games this year, he’s caught 20 passes for 234 yards (11.7 yds/rec), three TD’s. Twice as many catches per game, 46% more yards per catch.

    8) Tampa Bay Bucs lost Thursday night, but now they get 10 days off before their next game, which is especially helpful in their case, since they already had their bye week in Week 1, because of the hurricane damage in Florida caused their game with Miami to be moved to Week 11.

    7) I’d love to see a team playing New England let the QB call his own plays, just in case they’re still doing any BS stealing signals (chances are they are). They couldn’t do it if the QB called his own plays- no signals to steal.

Of course, that would greatly reduce substitutions by the offense, but the coach could send in personnel groupings and let the QB pick what plays he wanted that used those groupings.

    6) Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan owns a ship that is 312 feet long (almost an entire football field) and cost $200M to build. You can rent this ship, for $1.2M a week, plus expenses.

If you’re wondering, $1.2M a week works out to $7,142.86 an hour for the week.

    5) Toronto Raptors signed 3rd-year guard Norman Powell to a 4-year, $42 million contract extension; Powell has started 42 games in two years, averaging 16.7 mpg in his 125 NBA games.

$10.5M a year to a guy who has played 16.7 minutes a game? Wow.

    4) Was glad to find a Golden State-Minnesota game on TV live from China in the middle of the night Tuesday—game started at 2am Wednesday morning here in NY. The reason substitutes like Powell make $10.5M a year is that the NBA is wildly popular world-wide, which makes all the teams extremely profitable.

    3) Charlotte Hornets’ Nicolas Batum tore ligaments in his elbow and will be out for six weeks or so. Batum averaged 15.1 ppg and 5.9 assists a game last year.

    2) Former NBA star Walt Frazier still does Knicks games on MSG TV in New York City; he is very good. The other night, he was talking about how some NBA teams have only 3-4 preseason games this year, due to the shortened preseason.

Back when he played (late 60’s/early 70’s), Frazier said the Knicks played 16 preseason games, and sometimes traveled from City A to City B with their opponent, which had to be odd.

    1) Washington Post reported this week that 78% of Americans do not own a gun; 19% of Americans own 50% of our country’s gun, while 3% of our population owns the other 50%.

3% of Americans own 50% of the guns. Think about that.

        • Cubs' bullpen implodes in Game 2 loss to Nationals
          October 7, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) Carl Edwards Jr. knew the ball was gone as soon as it left his hand. Mike Montgomery wasn't sure until it went just over the fence.

The sinking feeling was the same for each reliever, and the rest of the Chicago Cubs.

Edwards' hanging curveball turned into a tying two-run homer by Bryce Harper and Montgomery's pulled changeup became a three-run shot by Ryan Zimmerman. The five-run rally in the eighth inning lifted Washington to a 6-3 victory on Saturday, tying the NL Division Series at a game apiece.

''It's frustrating, but when you're going up against good hitters, you've got to make your pitches,'' Montgomery said. ''We had them where we wanted them, and we couldn't get the job done late in the game.''

The World Series champion Cubs wasted another solid playoff performance by Jon Lester and homers for Anthony Rizzo and Willson Contreras . Game 3 is Monday at Wrigley Field.

Lester allowed one run and two hits in six innings in his 20th career postseason start. The left-hander threw 86 pitches before he was pulled in favor of a pinch hitter.

Pedro Strop worked a scoreless seventh before Edwards got into trouble in the eighth. With one out and a runner on first, the wiry right-hander fell behind 3-1 against Harper and the 2015 NL MVP drove his next pitch into the second deck in right field.

Citing the 26-year-old's numbers against lefties, manager Joe Maddon called turning to Edwards ''the right option'' and ''the only option.'' Lefties hit .119 against Edwards this season and .135 over his career. But the Nationals were also 5 for 12 against him this season.

''C.J. was the right man for the job,'' Maddon said. ''He made a bad pitch and the guy didn't miss it, and that's it. Sometimes that happens. Bryce is good. C.J. is good. Bryce got him.''

Edwards said it was ''the right pitch, just the wrong hitter.'' Walking Anthony Rendon put Montgomery on the spot because Maddon wanted a ground-ball pitcher. Instead, the lefty allowed a single to Daniel Murphy and then the home run to Zimmerman that the wind carried over left fielder Ben Zobrist.

''It's a tough situation, but it's the kind of situations I want to be in,'' Montgomery said. ''I prepared for that. It just didn't go my way this time.''

As much as the Cubs could feel the surprising turn of events, the memories of winning the World Series last year crept in not long after. Rizzo, who became the franchise's all-time postseason leader in home runs and RBIs, said nothing is going to faze his team.

''We've given up way bigger home runs than that before,'' Rizzo said. ''You're not going to knock us down. We gave up a home run to Rajai Davis to tie the game in the eighth inning (in Game 7 of the World Series). It's part of the journey. You've got to embrace it.''

After that home run, Maddon turned to Edwards and Montgomery to get the final three outs for the Cubs' first championship since 1908. So it's not at all surprising that Maddon wants them back out there in the same situation soon and so do their teammates.

''We've all been there, we've all given up big hits, we've all given up big homers,'' Lester said. ''Hopefully the situation arises on Monday and they go right back out there and dominate.

          ********************

Nationals' offense comes alive just in time
          October 7, 2017

WASHINGTON -- After scoring one run and getting only four hits in the first 16 innings of the National League Division Series, the Washington offense picked the right time to awaken from its slumber.

Bryce Harper tied the game with a two-run homer off Carl Edwards Jr. in the bottom of the eighth and later in the inning, Ryan Zimmerman belted a three-run shot against Mike Montgomery that gave the Nationals a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Game 2 Saturday and evened the series at 1-1.

The teams resume play Monday at Wrigley Field. The Nationals hope that the five-run eighth inning, which turned around a 3-1 Chicago lead, can create some momentum the team can carry with them into Game 3.

"Our pitchers have done their part," Zimmerman said. "We let them down the first game, obviously, and then for seven or so innings of this game, we didn't help them much either. Going into Chicago 0-2 would have been a pretty tough hole to dig ourselves out of. So 1-1 is obviously a lot more manageable."

Zimmerman hit his three-run shot barely over the fence in left. It carried just enough to snap the 3-3 tie. Harper's two-run homer three batters before had tied the game.

Cubs starter Jon Lester allowed only an Anthony Rendon solo homer and left after six innings with a 3-1 lead. Lester had that edge thanks to a Willson Contreras solo homer in the second, and Anthony Rizzo's two-run shot in the fourth.

In the eighth, Harper crushed his game-tying shot into the upper deck in right field that was gone from the moment it left his bat.

"Bryce is good," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "(Edwards) is good. Bryce got him."

Harper also said the Nationals were doing fine in the dugout before the five-run outburst. They still believed in themselves.

"I think we all have faith in our ability to play baseball," Harper said. "We're one of the best teams in the league all-around. We've got a lot of faith ... in our clubhouse."

Adam Lind started the game-winning rally with a single and scored on the Harper blast.

Lind was playing in his first postseason game. That came after playing in 1,344 regular-season contests, the most among active players, and his pinch-hit single starting the eighth got the winning rally going.

Washington manager Dusty Baker said he felt that at some point his team would break out of its slump. He was hoping that moment would be in Game 2.

"I was kind of bewildered because it's not too many teams or pitchers that have held us in check like that for a couple days," Baker said. "I just knew in the bottom of my heart that we were going to explode for some numbers, which we've done all year."

          • LEADING OFF: Astros, Indians seek sweeps; HR-happy playoffs
            October 7, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

            BROOMS IN BOSTON?

Jose Altuve and the Astros are at Fenway Park, trying to finish off a sweep of the Red Sox in the AL Division Series. Houston won the first two games by identical 8-2 scores, powered by the top of its lineup. George Springer, Alex Bregman, Altuve and Carlos Correa - the first four hitters - are a combined 12 of 32 (.375) with six home runs and 10 RBIs.

Brad Peacock starts for the Astros against Doug Fister. The Red Sox are aiming to avoid getting swept in the ALDS for the second straight year after losing to Cleveland last season.

            BACK SO SOON?

Following a frightening injury Friday, Indians slugger Edwin Encarnacion is hoping to play again this postseason - and could even pinch hit in Game 3 of Cleveland's ALDS against the Yankees.

Encarnacion was on crutches and wearing a boot on his sprained right ankle Saturday, but manager Terry Francona said the designated hitter hadn't been ruled out of Sunday's game at Yankee Stadium. At the very least, it seems Encarnacion should remain on the roster with hopes of contributing in the AL Championship Series if Cleveland advances.

The Indians can ensure a second straight ALCS appearance by taking Game 3. They lead their best-of-five ALDS 2-0 and send right-hander Carlos Carrasco to the mound. New York tries to avoid elimination behind Masahiro Tanaka.

            FLY, BALL, FLY

The Year of the Home Run is heating up even more in the postseason. The late-inning shots by Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper in Washington on Saturday boosted the total to a whopping 31 homers in just nine playoff games. Big leaguers launched a record 6,105 longballs in the regular season, breaking the mark of 5,963 hit in 2000. The Yankees, who led the majors with 241 home runs this year, have connected six times in three games so far.

            WRIGLEY WAITS

The Cubs and Nationals take a break before resuming their NL Division Series in Chicago, tied at 1. Max Schezer, who was pushed back in the rotation because of an injured right hamstring, starts Game 3 for Washington on Monday vs. Jose Quintana, who went 7-3 for the World Series champions after being acquired from the White Sox during the All-Star break.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

              13) Iowa State (+31) 38, Oklahoma 31— I hope Iowa State’s Joel Lanning gets a vote for the Heisman Trophy; this kid used to be the Cyclones’ QB, but when Iowa State decided to start Jacob Park at QB this year, Lanning willingly switched to middle linebacker, because thats was where he was needed.

Park left the team this week to deal with medical issues; senior Kyle Kempt started at QB, but in running situations, Lanning came in and ran the read-option.

Imagine a kid in the Big X playing both ways? He recovered an Oklahoma fumble near the goal line, sacked Baker Mayfield with 9:04 when the Cyclones led 31-24— he ran the ball 9 times for 35 yards, was 2-3 passing for 25 times. Tough kid.

              12) Miami 24, Florida State 20— Seminoles’ freshman QB James Blackman is listed at 6-5, 165 pounds; thats really thin, but it illustrates why most freshmen football players redshirt, so they can hit the weight room and training table so they get bigger/stronger before they actually start playing. He needs to add a lot of muscle to his frame. Not many 165-pound quarterbacks in the NFL. Or in major college football.

This game had a great second half, after a sleepy first half; Miami scored winning TD with 0:06 left after Florida State had taken the lead with 1:24 to play. Hurricanes ended a 7-game losing streak against FSU. The Seminoles are 1-3, and that doesn’t happen much.

              11) Michigan 14, Michigan State 10— Wolverines turned ball over five times (-5) and lost by only four points. Spartans gained only 252 yards, were 2-14 on 3rd down but pulled out a road win.

              10) Washington State 33, Oregon 10— Teams combined to go 4-31 on 3rd down; Coogs outgained Oregon 369-277 in stunningly easy win. Ducks didn’t score in the second half.

              9) Navy 48, Air Force 45— Middies blew a 31-10 third quarter lead, then scored winning TD on a 16-yard pass with 0:15 left. Navy is 5-0; their next two games are Memphis/Central Florida.

              8) Bowling Green 37, Miami OH 29— Talk about hideous losses; Miami had the ball on the BG 1-yard line, down 30-29 wth 1:40 left- they botch the shotgun snap, Falcons pick it up and run 93 yards for a TD, instead of taking a knee and ending the game (Miami had only one timeout left at the time). But BG’s defense held, so it wound up not mattering.

Miami had 37 first downs, gained 612 yards, but lost; stuff like that doesn’t happen very much. Only four of their 37 first downs came on third down plays, so they moved the ball at will, but turnovers undo a lot of things.

              7) Virginia 28, Duke 21— Cavaliers are quietly 4-1, with a win at Boise State in their only road game- they visit 1-5 North Carolina next week.

              6) South Carolina 48, Arkansas 22— Arkansas is now 10-24 in SEC games under Bielema; no bueno. Gamecocks led 20-10 until they scored two defensive TD’s 4:10 apart to break game open midway thru 3rd quarter. Hard to win when you’re -4 in turnovers, which Arkansas was.

              5) Upsets of the Day:
              Iowa State (+31) 38, Oklahoma 31
              Bowling Green (+14) 37, Miami OH 29
              Southern Miss (+13.5) 31, Tex-San Antonio 29
              Central Michigan (+12) 26, Ohio U 23
UAB (+11.5) 23, La Tech 22- UAB blocked tying PAT with 3:32 left.
              Arizona (+7) 45, Colorado 42

              4) Georgia 45, Vanderbilt 14— Dawgs ran ball for 423 yards here; they have two very good QB’s, one a sophomore, one a freshman. But the best QB in next year’s HS class just committed to go to Georgia, too. Why? You can only play one at a time……..

Looking down the road, don’t two of those three kids wind up transferring away from Georgia?

              3) Western Michigan 71, Buffalo 68 (7 OT)— Game went seven OT’s, after WMU blew 10-point 4th quarter lead. Both teams had 30+ first downs, ran 90+ plays in this marathon.

              2) Nationals 6, Cubs 3— Chicago’s bullpen imploded during a 5-run 8th inning that evens series at 1-1, heading back to Windy City. Ryan Zimmerman hit the go-ahead homer.

              1) Bad Beat of the Week: Texas (-4) 40, Kansas State 34 OT— K-State missed a 53-yard FG off the upright in OT, then Texas ran the ball in for the winning TD on 3rd-and goal from the 2, with the runner dragging several tacklers over the goal line with him. If you had +4, it was a pretty tough beat.

                • LEADING OFF: Astros, Indians seek sweeps; HR-happy playoffs
                  October 8, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

The late-inning shots by Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper in Washington on Saturday helped boost the total to a whopping 33 homers in ten playoff games.

                  • Astros not panicking after failing to sweep
                    October 8, 2017

BOSTON (AP) For the first two games of their American League Division Series, the Houston Astros followed a simple blueprint in taking a 2-0 series lead against the Boston Red Sox: score early and let the pitching take care of the rest.

They successfully did the first part again in Game 3 on Sunday, but for the first time in this series their pitching wasn't enough to tame Boston in a 10-3 loss.

The Astros are still just one win away from their first trip to a league championship series since 2005. But they are also expecting even more fight from a Red Sox team that finally resembled the club that has won back-to-back AL East crowns.

Houston outscored Boston 16-4 in Games 1 and 2, and arrived in Boston thinking about a sweep. With that now off the table, the Astros say they are digging in, and are prepared to do whatever is necessary to advance. And that means not deviating from doing what got them to this point.

''We try to win. That's not changing,'' manager A.J. Hinch said about potential tweaks to the game plan for Game 4 on Monday. ''There are no secrets between the two of us. I think we know what we're going to get.''

Houston is set to start right hander Charlie Morton, who will be making just his second career postseason start.

Part of the reason Hinch isn't expecting much adjustment is because the approach that earned Houston its 2-0 series lead was working again Sunday.

They again scored first, putting up three runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run by Carlos Correa - the Astros' fourth first-inning homer of the series. It would have grown to 6-0 in the second, if not for Mookie Betts reaching over the right-field wall to take away a home run from Josh Reddick.

''It was like a knockout punch if that ball goes out,'' Correa said. ''But Mookie did a great job. And their team came back and put amazing at-bats together.''

Most of those good at-bats came at the expense of starter Brad Peacock. He entered the game having allowed two runs or fewer in 16 of his 21 starts during the regular season, including his previous seven outings.

Instead he looked like the pitcher that had given up 12 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings pitched at Fenway. He lasted only 2 2/3 innings Sunday, giving up three earned runs and six hits.

His teammates didn't fare much better, with replacement Francisco Liriano giving up a two-run home run to rookie Rafael Devers that put Boston in front. The Astros did everything they could to slow down the Red Sox's surge. Lance McCullers, who was 7-4 in 22 starts this season, made his first career relief appearance when he entered the game in fourth inning with Houston trailing 4-3.

But any realistic hope Houston had of getting back in the game vanished in the seventh. That's when Jackie Bradley Jr. curled a three-run home run just inside the right-field foul pole out of the reach of Josh Reddick to make it 10-3.

''Nothing you can do. You get one taken away from you and you give one right back,'' Reddick said. ''It's just one of those things where it doesn't go your way.''

McCullers said getting the call from the bullpen was awkward, though he said he's been trying to mentally prepare for the possibility since the playoffs began.

He remains open to filling whatever role he is cast into the rest of the series.

''We're up 2-1 in the series, and our main focus is to win it. It doesn't matter how it's done,'' he said. ''We'll come back tomorrow, clean slate and try to get it done.''

Judge, Tanaka, Bird lift Yanks in Game 3
                    October 8, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Good thing for Masahiro Tanaka and the Yankees that Aaron Judge is 6-foot-7.

Judge reached high and prevented a home run to save Tanaka's seven-inning gem, Greg Bird homered off relief ace Andrew Miller, and New York edged the Cleveland Indians 1-0 Sunday night in Game 3 to extend their AL Division Series.

''He was brilliant,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said about Tanaka. ''He gave us everything we needed.''

Aroldis Chapman got a five-out save as the wild-card Yankees avoided a three-game sweep by the defending AL champions. With two on in the ninth, Chapman struck out cleanup hitter Jay Bruce before Carlos Santana flied out to end it.

Game 4 is Monday night at Yankee Stadium, with young ace Luis Severino scheduled to start for New York. Cleveland will go with Game 1 winner Trevor Bauer on three days' rest, though there's rain in the forecast.

''I consider this normal rest for me. I enjoy pitching on short (rest),'' Bauer said. ''If I could draw it out, personally, this is how I'd pitch every time.''

New York got a splendid performance from Tanaka in an old-fashioned October pitching duel with Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco. Tanaka received a big boost when Judge robbed Francisco Lindor of a two-run homer in the sixth.

Bird came through with the huge hit New York had to have when he connected against Miller leading off the seventh. The first baseman was fired up as he greeted happy teammates in the dugout.

Sidelined by injuries most of the past two seasons, Bird also went deep in Game 2.

''I'm not ready to be done playing and I don't think the rest of the team is,'' he said.

New York rebounded after blowing a five-run lead Friday during a 13-inning loss in Game 2 that led to heavy criticism of Girardi, booed Sunday night by the home crowd during pregame introductions.

''Not the first time,'' Girardi said, acknowledging it's no fun to hear catcalls. ''I kind of expected it.''

This was the Yankees' first 1-0 postseason victory since Game 3 of their 2001 ALDS against Oakland, when Derek Jeter's backhanded flip beat Jeremy Giambi to the plate for a crucial, memorable out.

Judge's grab was the big defensive play Sunday. With a runner on first in a scoreless game, Lindor lofted a sixth-inning drive toward the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium. Judge backed up to the wall and barely needed to jump to extend his glove above the fence and make the catch, just to the right of the auxiliary scoreboard.

''Who better to reach up there and grab it than him?'' Bird said.

The sellout crowd of 48,614 roared and Judge flashed a bright smile. It was the first time the rookie slugger had robbed an opponent of a home run and the first time Lindor had ever been so denied, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

''I had to do something,'' said Judge, who is 0 for 10 with eight strikeouts in the series. ''I wasn't obviously making any contact at the plate, so you've got to make an impact on the game somehow and luckily I was able to do it on defense.''

Tanaka tipped his cap in appreciation and held Cleveland down until he was done. The right-hander, beaten 3-0 by Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros in the 2015 AL wild-card game, struck out seven, walked one and allowed three hits.

He whiffed three of his first four batters and was aided by two double plays.

''That's the best performance that I've seen from him,'' Girardi said.

The biggest test for Tanaka came in the fourth, after Jason Kipnis' one-out triple glanced off the thumb of Judge's glove in deep right field and rolled away.

Tanaka beared down and fanned No. 3 batter Jose Ramirez and Bruce, then turned to shout and slapped his mitt in excitement.

''I came here to pitch in these type of games,'' Tanaka said through a translator.

Bruce, a big star in the first two games, struck out all four times up while batting fourth in place of injured slugger Edwin Encarnacion, who sat out after leaving Game 2 with a sprained right ankle.

Michael Brantley filled in for Encarnacion as the designated hitter and went 0 for 2 with a walk.

Tanaka delivered under pressure in his second career playoff start. After going 13-12 with a 4.74 ERA during an inconsistent season, he was pitching on eight days' rest but looked plenty sharp.

In his previous outing, he struck out a career-high 15 over seven scoreless innings in his final regular-season start against Toronto.

Carrasco matched Tanaka into the sixth.

The 18-game winner gave up three hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. Also helped by two double plays, he struck out seven and was lifted with the bases loaded.

Miller retired Starlin Castro on a popup to end the inning.

''That's two of the better starting performers you're going to see,'' Indians manager Terry Francona said.

                    RARE BIRD

Bird joined Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger as the only left-handed hitters to homer off Miller this season. ''Just threw the wrong pitch in the wrong spot,'' Miller said. ''It stinks. I mean, I'm the guy who lost the game.''

                    STREAK SNAPPED

Cleveland had won six straight ALDS games, one shy of the 2009-11 Yankees for the longest such streak.

                    SERIOUS CHEESE

Chapman struck out four. He threw 28 of 34 pitches at 100 mph or more, topping out at 104 mph on a pitch Ramirez fouled off.

                    TRAINER'S ROOM

Indians: Encarnacion is day to day, Francona said. He did not expect the slugger to be available off the bench in this one. ... Ramirez fouled a ball off his right leg in the fourth. He was checked by a trainer but stayed in the game. ... Francona said he had his entire bullpen available after Friday's 13-inning victory.

Yankees: Dellin Betances wasn't used after throwing 35 pitches in two-plus innings and taking the loss in Game 2. Before the game, Girardi said he wasn't sure if the big right-hander would be available.

                    UP NEXT

Indians: Bauer struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings of two-hit ball during a 4-0 win in the series opener last Thursday. ''I think he'll be just fine,'' Francona said. Josh Tomlin was initially penciled in to start a potential Game 4, but he tossed two hitless innings in relief Friday and was the Game 2 winner.

Yankees: Severino got only one out in the wild-card game against Minnesota last Tuesday, but New York's lineup and bullpen bailed him out.

                    • LEADING OFF: Start TBD at Fenway, Greinke vs old teammates
                      October 8, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Monday:

                      DAY GAME IT IS

The Red Sox and Astros left Fenway Park on Sunday night not knowing what time they'd play Game 4. They were scheduled to start at 1:08 p.m. EDT, unless Cleveland finished off the Yankees in Game 3 of their ALDS later Sunday. New York capped a 1-0 victory around 11 p.m. EDT, setting up an afternoon game.

That is, of course, assuming the rain in the forecast holds off.

''We've been watching The Weather Channel for a couple of months now,'' said Astros manager A.J. Hinch, whose team was forced to play a home series in Tampa Bay in August when Hurricane Harvey flooded Houston. ''So that's not unusual for us.''

Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello is set to face Houston's Charlie Morton with the Astros up 2-1 in the series.

A year after leading the league with 22 wins, Porcello had a 4.65 ERA and a league-leading 17 losses. He pitched a scoreless inning in Houston's 8-2 win in Game 1.

Morton has yet to pitch in the series. He was 14-7 with a 3.62 ERA in the regular season.

                      THE RIGHT GUY?

Zack Greinke will attempt to save Arizona's season when he faces his former teammates with the Dodgers, who counter with late-season acquisition Yu Darvish for Game 3 of their NLDS. The Diamondbacks have been battered by Los Angeles' deep lineup while falling in an 0-2 hole, with 6-7-8 hitters Logan Forsythe, Austin Barnes and Yasiel Puig doing the bulk of the damage in an 8-5 Game 2 victory. Greinke was 17-7 with a 3.20 ERA this season, his second since signing a $206.5 million, six-year contract after leaving L.A. in free agency.

''If you've got to pick one guy to stop this situation we're in, I think we've found the right guy in Zack Greinke,'' Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Saturday.

                      BAUER POWER

Trevor Bauer will start on three days' rest as the Indians try to eliminate the Yankees in Game 4 of their ALDS in New York. The 17-game winner pitched into the seventh of a 4-0 Game 1 victory, and manager Terry Francona should have virtually his entire bullpen available if needed. Luis Severino will start for the Yankees, who trail 2-1 in the best-of-five series. Severino got only one out in the AL wild-card game against Minnesota last Tuesday, but New York's lineup and bullpen bailed him out.

                      LEFTY GUESSING

Cubs manager Joe Maddon hinted Sunday that he might play musical chairs with his lineup against Washington right-hander Max Scherzer for their pivotal NLDS Game 3. Maddon called Scherzer ''oppressively difficult versus right-handed hitters,'' so he's hoping to add another lefty to the lineup. He didn't reveal much more.

Could the lefty surprise be reserve infielder Tommy La Stella, who is 3 for 6 (homer, triple, double) against Scherzer, or rookie Ian Happ, a switch hitter who also can play second? How about veteran John Jay, who has played all over the outfield? Or maybe none of the above?

''I'd guess (Kyle) Schwarber,'' Washington manager Dusty Baker volunteered.

                      • Ex-Dodger Greinke in way of L.A. sweep
                        October 8, 2017

PHOENIX (AP) Zack Greinke left Los Angeles for a big payday in the desert. Now Arizona wants the ex-Dodger to prove his worth.

The Diamondbacks are in dire need of a strong performance from the 17-game winner to help prevent Los Angeles from sweeping them out of their National League Division Series.

Greinke will be on the mound when the best-of-five series shifts to Arizona for Game 3 on Monday night after the Dodgers raked Diamondbacks pitching to take the first two games in Los Angeles.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said there's no one he'd rather have there.

''He's fearless. He's on the attack. He understands strengths and limitations,'' Lovullo said at his Sunday news conference. ''So I feel like because he's been our guy all year long and because I know what I know about him, I couldn't think of a better guy to go out and execute tomorrow.''

The Dodgers counter with Yu Darvish (10-12, 3.86 ERA), a trade deadline acquisition from Texas.

Darvish made nine starts for Los Angeles, going 4-3 with a 3.44 ERA. The 6-foot-5 Japanese right-hander was at his best at the end, going 2-0 in his final three regular-season starts, giving up just one run in 19 1/3 innings.

''When he's on, he's really good,'' Lovullo said. ''When he's not, he's beatable.''

Darvish's second start after the trade was at Arizona, where he went seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits and striking out 10 to get the win in an 8-6 Dodger victory.

He has changed his mechanics since arriving in Los Angeles.

''I think it will benefit me because they haven't seen me pitch the way I do now,'' Darvish said after the team arrived Sunday night. ''How I pitch is different.''

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts knows how good Arizona can be at home.

''They kind of swarm you,'' he said. ''Momentum starts going their way and they get really aggressive. They're tough.''

The Diamondbacks were 52-29 at home this season, and Greinke was particularly sharp there. The right-hander was 13-1 in 18 starts at Chase Field with a 2.76 ERA, 131 strikeouts and 23 walks.

But his latest outing there, in the NL wild-card game last Wednesday, was far from his best. After three scoreless innings, the Rockies rang up four runs and Greinke never made it out of the fourth.

The Dodgers battered Arizona for 17 runs and 24 hits in the series' first two games.

''They wait for pitches to hit and then it's an ideal way of hitting,'' Greinke said. ''You just look for a pitch to hit. If you get it, you hit it as hard as you can. ... I mean, it's pretty simple, but it's harder to do than it sounds.''

In the second year of a $206.5 million, six-year contract, Greinke was 1-2 with a 3.65 ERA in four starts against Los Angeles this year.

Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner are leading the Dodgers postseason offensive surge.

Puig, in the eighth spot of the batting order, is 5 for 9, including a double and triple, and has driven in four. Turner is 4 for 8 with a home run and five RBIs.

The Diamondbacks will welcome a loud, friendly crowd after the hostility of Dodger Stadium. The Chase Field throng was exceptionally boisterous in Arizona's 11-8 wild-card win over Colorado.

Arizona was 6-3 at home against the Dodgers, including a three-game sweep in September. But the Diamondbacks didn't resemble that team in the first two NLDS games.

If there is a Game 4, Lovullo said, lefty Patrick Corbin will get the start. That, of course, is meaningless unless Arizona wins Monday.

''We can't get too far ahead of ourselves,'' said the Diamondbacks' Daniel Descalso, a veteran of 47 playoff games. ''Right now we have to win tomorrow. That's all that matters to us. We have Zack on the mound. We love it when Zack pitches. He's our stopper. He's our ace.''

A few years ago, the Dodgers clinched the NL West in Arizona and greatly miffed some of the locals by celebrating in the Chase Field swimming pool. They needn't worry this year.

''That won't happen,'' Roberts said. ''`We have bigger goals than to jump into a swimming pool."
