    • MLB Daily Line Drive: Wednesday's picks, betting odds and analysis

      Double-Play Picks

Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies (+145, 9)

The Nats and Phillies go to battle at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia for the final game of their three-game series Wednesday evening. The first two games (one win for each team) were tight, low scoring, pitchers duels - and we expect nothing different tonight.

Neither offense is really clicking right now with the Nationals averaging only 2.75 runs per game over their last four contests and the Phillies are averaging only 2.2 over their last five. All of those games (Nats' last four and Phils' last five) have cashed for Under bettors.

"Mr. Consistency" Tanner Roark gets the start for Washington tonight. While Roark doesn't blow you away with eye-popping stats or radar gun results, he has certainly been a dependable hurler who hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start in two months (nine straight starts allowing three runs or less). His ERA during this solid nine-game run is 3.32 and he is actually carrying a current Under trend of 10-1 in his last 11 starts.

On the mound for the Phillies will be rookie right-hander Mark Leiter. While Leiter's overall numbers aren't very impressive, like many young starting pitchers, his splits at home are overwhelmingly better than those on the road. At home in his career (five starts and six relief appearances) he owns an ERA of 2.36, a WHIP of only 1.03, and an opponent's on base percentage of .277. Leiter is also in the midst of an Under trend at 4-0-1 in his five career starts at Citizens Bank Park.

There is a slight breeze blowing in from right field (7-9 miles per hour), both teams are riding Under streaks, and both starters are riding Under streaks.

      Pick: Under 9

Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals (-175, 9)

It’s a matchup of American League Central teams who just a few seasons ago were battling for the division title, but this year it’s just pride on the line as the Tigers and Royals continue their three-game set Wednesday night in Kansas City.

The Royals took the opener 2-1, but there is a very good chance the bats wake up for Game 2, as the Tigers send Jordan Zimmermann to toe the rubber against the Royals' Jason Hammel.

Zimmermann’s first year with the Tigers has not gone as planned. The veteran right-hander is 8-13 with a 6.19 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP, both career worsts by a wide margin. Zimmermann’s last six starts have been particularly rough, where he has gone 1-4 with a whopping 10.41 ERA and a 2.13 WHIP.

The Tigers still owe Zimmermann around $88 million through 2020, yeesh.

Hammel meanwhile, has also not enjoyed his first season with his new team (luckily for KC at a much cheaper rate), struggling to an identical 8-13 record with a 5.32 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Hammel has been roughed up in his last three starts, going 0-3 while pitching to a 12.79 ERA and a 2.53 WHIP.

Despite the offensive numbers for both teams not being the greatest, they can take advantage of bad pitching and this is a whopper of bad pitching matchup.

Plus, the O/U is 11-6 this season in this matchup with an average of 10.8 total runs scored per game. Tonight’s total is too tempting.

      Pick: Over 9

      Yesterday's Picks: 1-1
      Season To Date: 157-143-15

      Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

      Streaking:
Justin Verlander, Houston Astros (14-8, 3.38 ERA, $400)

Maybe a change of scenery is all Justin Verlander needed, because pitching in a pennant race sure looks good on him. The Astros newest starter has been nothing short of fantastic since coming over from the Tigers.

Verlander is 4-0 with an unfathomable 0.64 ERA and a crazy good 0.57 WHIP, while striking out 32 and walking just five since and has the best strikeout per nine innings of his career since switching jerseys at the end of August.

Verlander has actually won six of his last seven starts with a 1.10 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP with 58 strikeouts and nine walks. Oh, and he has allowed just five hits in his last 22 innings pitched.

Verlander and the Astros are currently hefty -195 road favorites for their matchup with the Rangers.

      Slumping:
      Adam Conley, Miami Marlins (7-7, 5.74, $-15)

Unfortunately for Marlins fans, the only positive thing to talk about for this team has been Giancarlo Stanton's home run chase (of not a record 61 home runs?) as Miami failed to take a step forward this season. The same can be said for Adam Conley.

The southpaw has had a disappointing season after pitching to a 3.80 ERA in his first season and a half in the Bigs. Conley is 7-7 with a 5.74 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in 2017 and his last three starts have not gone well. He is 1-0, but owns a big 10.50 ERA and a 2.17 WHIP in those starts.

Conley and the Marlins are big +175 road dogs for this afternoon's contest in Colorado.

      Wednesday's Top Trends

      * The Tampa Bay Rays are 7-22 in their last 29 games at Yankee Stadium. +235 today @ Yankees.
      * The Baltimore Orioles are 0-7 in their last seven interleague games. +115 today @ Pirates.
      * The Cincinnati Reds are 5-13 in Homer Bailey's last 18 starts vs. National League Central. +150 today at Brewers.
      * Over is 14-3 in Jordan Zimmermann's last 17 starts vs. American League Central. Tigers/Royals Total: 9.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

There is a 50 percent chance of rain this afternoon in Denver where Stanton and the Marlins are scheduled to take on the Rockies at Coors Field. The Rockies are big -185 favorites today.

There will be a 9-11 mile per hour pitcher's wind blowing in from left field at Busch Stadium where the Cubs will be hoping to celebrate a National League Central division title on rival soil. The total for tonight is currently set at 9.

There will also be a pitcher's wind blowing in from left field in Cleveland (12 miles per hour) where the Indians will host the Twins. The total for that one is currently at 9.5.

      Ump Of The Day

Mike Estabrook will be behind the plate tonight in The Bronx where the Yankees will entertain the Rays. Estabrook is the No. 5 Under umpire in Major League Baseball this season at 17-8 and over his last two seasons the Under is 32-18 (64 percent).

The total for tonight is currently set at 8.5

      • Wednesday's Diamond Notes
        September 27, 2017

Hottest team: Twins (5-0 last five) vs. Indians

Minnesota is on the doorstep of completing an incredible turnaround following a 59-103 campaign in 2016. The Twins’ magic number sits at one for clinching the final Wild Card spot in the American League after defeating the Indians on Tuesday, 8-6 as +165 road underdogs. Bartolo Colon exited the game following one inning of work, but Brian Dozier saved the Twins by drilling a three-run homer in the seventh inning to take a 7-6 advantage.

The Twins’ offense continues to hit the ball around the field as they have scored at least seven runs in each victory during this five-game winning streak. Adalberto Mejia takes the mound for Minnesota as the southpaw tossed 4.2 innings in his previous outing at Detroit, a 12-1 rout of the Tigers. The Twins have won four of Mejia’s six road outings this season, including a 5-0 victory at Progressive Field in late June.

Coldest team: Reds (0-7 last seven) vs. Brewers

Milwaukee is holding onto to dear life after edging Cincinnati on Tuesday, 7-6 to remain 1 ½ games behind Colorado for the second Wild Card spot in the National League. The Reds will look to play spoilers, but have dropped each of their past three meetings at Miller Park, while allowing at least five runs in each of their last seven losses. Cincinnati’s struggles on the road continue as the Reds are 2-8 in their last 10 games away from Great American Ballpark.

Homer Bailey tries to stop the bleeding for the Reds as Cincinnati owns a 2-5 record in his past seven outings. Bailey has pitched well recently against the Brewers as Cincinnati won his previous two outings in the underdog role by one run apiece, including an 11-10 triumph at Miller Park as a +160 underdog.

Hottest pitcher: Luis Severino, Yankees (13-6, 3.03 ERA)

New York may have found its ace for the future this season by winning 19 of Severino’s 30 starts. Severino lasted only three innings in his last start against the Twins, but the right-hander had tossed six consecutive quality outings prior to that short stint. Tonight will be the 10th time this season that Severino is listed as a favorite of -200 or higher as the Yankees have dominated in this role by going 8-1. Severino allowed three earned runs in two starts against the Rays this season, as New York is 1-1 in those outings.

Coldest pitcher: Jason Hammel, Royals (8-13, 5.32 ERA)

Kansas City faltered down the stretch, but the Royals picked up their eighth win over the Tigers in the last nine meetings on Tuesday, 2-1. Hammel has been knocked around in his last three starts by giving up 29 hits and 18 earned runs as the Royals are 0-3 in this stretch. The right-hander last won on September 6, which came at Detroit, 13-2 as -130 favorites, scattering nine hits and two earned runs in six innings. The Royals have won three of Hammel’s four starts against the Tigers this season, but the lone loss came at home in May.

Biggest OVER run: Orioles (10-2 last 12)

Amazingly, Baltimore is on this OVER run as its offense has been grounded recently. In the last 10 games, the O’s have produced three runs or fewer six times, while coming off Tuesday’s 10-1 drubbing at Pittsburgh. So it’s a pitching problem for Baltimore, as the Orioles have allowed at least eight runs six time in the past 10 contests, while compiling a dreadful 4-15 record the last 19 games overall. Gabriel Ynoa heads to the hill for the O’s in the series finale at PNC Park, as the right-hander is coming off his best career start by allowing one earned run in eight innings of a 3-1 victory over the Rays last Thursday.

Biggest UNDER run: Phillies (5-0 last five)

Philadelphia’s offense stepped up against Los Angeles last week by scoring a combined 13 runs in two of the victories. Recently, the Phillies have plated only 11 runs in the last five contests, including two runs in each of the three games at Atlanta this past weekend. Philadelphia knocked off Washington on Tuesday, 4-1 as the pitching staff has performed well of late by giving up only four runs in the last three games. Mark Leiter, Jr. takes the mound for Philadelphia as the Phillies are 4-0-1 to the UNDER in his five starts at Citizens Bank Park.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Cardinals

Chicago was denied another NL Central title in last night’s 8-7 loss at Busch Stadium. The Cubs dug themselves an early 5-1 hole as Jake Arrieta lasted only three innings and rallied for four runs in the eighth inning, but couldn’t finish off the comeback. The Cardinals are still alive Wild Card race, sitting 2 ½ games behind Colorado for the final NL playoff spot, while the Cubs maintain a five-game edge over the Brewers in the NL Central with five games remaining.

The Cubs can clinch the division championship tonight as John Lackey heads to the hill. Chicago has won 11 of Lackey’s last 13 starts, including an 8-2 victory at Wrigley Field over St. Louis on September 15. The Cubs have cruised to a 5-1 record in his last six road starts, while winning in his only outing at Busch Stadium back in April, 6-4 as a -120 favorite.

The Cardinals defeated the Cubs for the first time in the last seven meetings last night as Michael Wacha looks to start a winning streak for St. Louis. Wacha has given up three earned runs or fewer in five consecutive starts, while the Cardinals are 4-1 in that span. The Redbirds have won six of Wacha’s last nine starts at Busch Stadium, but are 0-3 in his three starts against the Cubs this season, although all three losses came in Chicago.

Betcha didn’t know: Seattle will fall short of the postseason, but the Mariners have dominated the Athletics recently. The M’s are 8-0 in the past eight meetings with their AL West counterparts, while winning five straight matchups at the Coliseum. To make matters worse for Oakland, starting pitcher Kendall Graveman is winless in his last six starts against the Mariners since 2016.

Biggest public favorite: Yankees (-260) vs. Rays

Biggest public underdog: Mariners (+105) at Athletics

Biggest line move: Rockies (-180 to -185) vs. Marlins

              • Thursday’s six-pack

Blue Ribbon Yearbook’s top six college hoop teams (released before the FBI’s press conference on Tuesday)

                6) Louisville— Wonder who the interim coach will be.

                5) Kentucky— Will be very young again.

                4) Kansas— Brought in several transfers this year.

                3) Duke— You wonder how deep this whole recruiting mess will go.

                2) Michigan State— Will wind up as the #1 preseason team.

                1) Arizona— Already fired one of their assistant coaches.

                *************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                13) I would suggest that one change basketball should make is letting kids go right from high school to the NBA; it used to be this way— Lebron James, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant didn’t go to college.

You’re never going to totally eliminate corruption in something that is so popular and is a huge moneymaker, but this would take the most lucrative layer of corruption away from the sport.

The NCAA tournament was still really popular when players could go straight from high school to college. I think this would help both the NBA and college ball.

                12) Finally heard a good chunk of a game with Tony Romo as analyst; he is enthusiastic, and he does something I like that other hate— he chimes in during the play, if he sees something.

“He’s got him!!!” Romo might say as he sees a play develop. I like that; Jon Gruden does it a little bit sometimes, I wouldn’t mind more of that.

                11) Brent Musburger came out Tuesday and said he didn’t like that at all, the chiming in during a play. Thats what makes the world interesting, that we can disagree and Brent was a play-by-play guy after all.

Bottom line is this: CBS made a good move making Romo a game analyst.

Some statistical knowledge from the first three weeks of the NFL:
                10) Best red zone offense (based on pts/possession):
                1) Chiefs 6.00 2) Rams 5.86 T3) Packers/Raiders 5.67

                Worst red zone offenses:
                32) Bengals 2.88 31) Cardinals T29) Dolphins/Giants 3.75

                9) Best “black zone” offenses (drives that start 75+ yards from end zone)
                1) Titans 3.54 2) Rams 3.40 3) Chiefs 2.95 T4) Vikings/Saints 2.94

Worst black zone offenses (teams lose points if you give up a pick-6):
                32) Colts 0.42 31) Browns 0.77 30) Bengals 0.84 T28) Ravens/Bills 0.85

                8) Teams with most plays of 20+ yards:
                T1) Rams/Patriots 20 3) T3) Cardinals/Vikings 19 T5) Saints/Broncos 15

                7) Teams that have allowed the most plays of 20+ yards:
                32) Saints 22, 31) Colts 21, 30) Patriots 18, T28) Jets/Rams 16

                6) Someone in Las Vegas bet $340K on the money line on the Steelers last week; all they had to do for the guy to win was beat the Bears, but they lost it overtime. Thats a bad day.

                5) Arizona Cardinals’ kicker/punter are a combined 77 years old.

                4) Saw a cool thing on Twitter this week: 79-year old Jerry West on the court, helping Sam Dekker with his jump shot at Clippers’ training camp out in Hawai’i.

Who better to help a player with skills than one of the greatest players/executives of all-time?

                3) Auburn had sold out its basketball season tickets for this season, but now their program is in trouble, the school is offering refunds to season ticket holders. Bruce Pearl is expected to quit/be fired soon.

One of their best recruits for 2018 has already de-committed, a 6-10 forward from Georgia.

                2) Rick Pitino was making $7.76M a year at Louisville; what does he do now? TV work? Would another NBA team take a chance on him (doubtful)? I’d enjoy hearing him on TV, but I’m guessing he is just going to disappear for a while, until this whole mess plays out.

                1) Last question today about the college basketball issue: Do the players’ families who took the money from coaches get nailed by the IRS for tax evasion?

                • LEADING OFF: Red Sox try to clinch, Cubs-Cards get testy
                  September 27, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                  RED SOX READY

Boston can clinch the AL East with a win over Houston at Fenway Park, plus a loss by the Yankees at home to Tampa Bay. Eduardo Rodriguez (6-6, 3.91 ERA) starts as the Red Sox try to wrap up the first set of back-to-back AL East titles in franchise history. Right fielder Mookie Betts (sore left wrist) and infielder Eduardo Nunez (right knee injury) have missed two straight games for Boston.

                  BAD BLOOD

Cubs star Anthony Rizzo was hit by a 99 mph fastball on the first pitch he saw from Michael Wacha with two outs and nobody on in the first inning Wednesday night. Rizzo was visibly upset after getting plunked, throwing his bat overhanded toward the Chicago dugout. Earlier in the day, Cardinals outfielder Tommy Pham told media that he believed he was hit by a pitch on purpose by the Cubs a day earlier. Both batters were nailed in the ribs. The newly crowned NL Central champion Cubs wrap up the series against their longtime rivals at Busch Stadium.

                  TRY AGAIN

White Sox rookie Dylan Covey aims once more for his first major league win. The 24-year-old righty is 0-7 with a 7.83 ERA since making his debut this year, allowing 19 home runs in 6 4 1/3 innings. Covey starts at home against the Los Angeles Angels.

Texas at Iowa State (Thu. - ESPN, 8:00 p.m. ET)

The Longhorns and Cyclones kick off the fifth weekend of college football in Ames in the standalone FBS game on Thursday night. Texas lost last time out at Southern California back on Sept. 16, but they still have to feel good about themselves after almost winning at the L.A. Coliseum against a Top 5 team. They ended up falling 27-24 in overtime, but it was a confidence builder. Iowa State hasn't been lacking in confidence, especially on offense. They're averageing 41.3 PPG through three games, scoring 42 in their opener with Northern Iowa, 41 in their rivalry game loss to Iowa and 41 in a win against Akron on Sept. 16. The defense has allowed 27.3 PPG, so there is room for improvement there.

The Cyclones have posted a perfect 3-0 ATS mark through three outings, with the 'over' cashing in their first two. The Longhorns have cashed each of their psat two outings with the 'under' hitting in each performance. Texas has been a bit hard to figure, as they were topped 51-41 against Maryland in their opener at home, they blasted San Jose State 56-0 in a game that wasn't much of a test, and then the aforementioned USC game. Which Longhorns team will show up? Iowa State is 7-1 ATS over their past eight home games, while Texas is 4-1 ATS in their past five against winning teams. The home team has cashed in four of the past five in this series.

                    Baylor at Kansas State (ESPN2, 3:30 p.m.)

So close, but no cigar for Baylor last weekend against Oklahoma. The Bears couldn't avoid an 0-4 SU start, but they were able to finally pick up their first cover of the season in a near monumental upset. At the very least, if the Bears were lacking confidence after shocking losses to FCS Liberty and Texas-San Antonio, as well as a not as shocking loss at Duke, they certainly have a little mojo back after taking the Sooners to the brink. K-State is champing at the bit after a 14-7 loss two weeks ago at Vanderbilt, a stunning lack of offense after posting a pair of 55-point performances against FCS Central Arkansas and Charlotte. Of course, those teams do not have a nasty defense like Vandy.

The Bears roll into Manhattan with a 1-7 ATS mark over their past eight games, and they're 3-8 ATS in their past 11 overall. Baylor is also 2-5 ATS in the past seven inside the Big 12. The Wildcats have rattled off covers in four of their past five overall, and they're 6-2 ATS over their past eight after failing to cover in their last outing. They also own an impressive 45-22-1 ATS across their past 68 league games. The underdog has hit in six of the past seven meetings, with the home team 5-1 ATS across the past six in this series. Baylor is 0-4 ATS in their past four tries at K-State, while going 2-6 ATS in the past eight meetings overall.

Oklahoma State at Texas Tech (FOX, 8:00 p.m. ET)
Oklahoma State looked like a potential playoff contender, and they still might be. But that's why rankings are meaningless in September, as they were housed by Texas Christian last week in Stillwater. OK State is looking to bounce back after a 44-31 setback, and it doesn't get easier on the road against a high-octane Texas Tech team. The Red Raiders have passed a couple of tests in a row, pushing aside Arizona State by a 52-45 score, and then they spoiled Houston's long home win streak with a 27-24 win on the road last week. The Red Raiders have opened the season with a 3-0 ATS mark. Oklahoma State is 6-1 ATS over their psat seven road games, 5-2 ATS in their past seven against winning teams and, perhaps more importantly, 4-0 ATS in their past four trips to Lubbock, and 9-3 ATS in the past 12 against TTU. The road team has cashed in four straight in the series, and the 'over' is 5-0 in the past five meetings.

                    • UCLA's defense tries to correct shocking struggles
                      September 27, 2017

LOS ANGELES (AP) UCLA is searching for equilibrium between its defense and offense.

The Bruins have an offense as good as any in college football, ranking in the top 10 in points per game, yards per game and yards per play. They have a defense that ranks in the bottom 10 in points per game, yards per game and yards per play.

The offensive production isn't a surprise, not with the presence of quarterback Josh Rosen, but the defensive breakdowns are an absolutely shock to a program that has prided itself on its play on that side of the ball under head coach Jim Mora.

''Did I see it? No, I didn't see it coming like that,'' defensive coordinator Tom Bradley said.

Mora made his reputation as a defensive coach in the NFL. Bradley oversaw some of the best defenses in college football history at Penn State. The defensive line and secondary were regarded as the strongest and deepest positions on the team. Five-star defensive end Jaelan Phillips and five-star cornerback Darnay Holmes were the centerpieces of another strong recruiting class.

Yet, UCLA is allowing 43.3 points and 524.8 yards per game. The run defense is the worst in the FBS, allowing 307.5 yards per game, and still has to face a daunting gauntlet of top Pac-12 running backs, including Phillip Lindsay of Colorado on Saturday.

Players settling into new roles and injuries have played a part, but Bradley has attributed the majority of the problems to poor fundamentals.

''I think we're just going through some growing pains. I know we're struggling a little bit, too, but I really think we're going to get better,'' Bradley said. ''I think it comes down to once again a lot of our big plays are we're not so much out of position as we are missing tackles and things of that nature. But anytime you go through this it's one thing here, one thing there. It's just time for everybody to get on the same page and play the same way.''

UCLA reinstated tackling drills in practice this week in hopes of addressing some of those struggles. The work, primarily during position drills but also after practice as a handful of players drove their shoulders into tackling sleds to push them up and down the field, has two goals.

The first is to address the breakdowns in the open field that have been evident since Texas A&M built a 44-10 lead in the third quarter of the season opener, only for Rosen to rally the team for a 45-44 win. UCLA has allowed 28 explosive runs, which Bradley defines as carries of 10 or more yards, and 17 explosive passes of at least 15 yards.

The second is to address the spate of targeting penalties against UCLA. Safety Adarius Pickett became the third UCLA defender ejected for targeting in as many games on a helmet-to-helmet hit to Stanford tight end Drew Schultz.

The other issues hindering UCLA seem to be more mental than physical.

Defensive lineman Boss Tagaloa said the defense's effort waned in the second half as the Cardinal scored touchdowns on all five possessions.

Bradley said players have frequently been out of position because of a lack of faith that teammates will be in the right position.

''Don't ad-lib because you think he's not going to be there,'' Bradley said.

Getting back to basics has been Bradley's rallying cry this week, and Tagaloa believes the defense will do just that to pick up their end of the bargain with the suddenly dominant offense.

''Coming back after a game like last week, the last two weeks, I feel like we're more motivated just to work harder,'' Tagaloa said. ''We know what we have to do and I think we're going to get it done.''
