    • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

      tba here....

      **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

      13) Week 3 NFL betting summary, from ESPN.com:

“Ten of Sunday’s 13 underdogs covered the spread, with six teams pulling outright upsets. For some bookmakers, it was their most lucrative NFL Sunday ever. For the betting public, it was a multimillion-dollar defeat.

On an average NFL Sunday, sportsbook operator CG Technology will win 4-6 percent of the amount wagered. This Sunday, CG Technology kept more than 16 percent of the money bet on the NFL at their sportsbooks, according to vice president of risk Jason Simbal.”

      12) College football trends: Home favorites in conference games: 7-18 vs spread. Home underdogs in conference games: 8-13, making home teams 15-31 in conference games.

      11) Phil Jackson stole $12M a year from the Knicks, but couldn’t manage to trade ball-stopping gunner Carmelo Anthony. His replacement got rid of Anthony pretty quickly. Well done.

      10) Twins’ OF Zach Granite is the first major leaguer since 2001 to pinch-run, then hit a home run later in that same inning.

      9) Why doesn’t Tulane’s football team wear green uniforms? They’re the Green Wave, but they wear these awful light-blue jerseys. Things like this bother me.

      8) Oakland A’s are 41-39 in games that rookie 3B Matt Chapman has played in this year; they are 31-45 in all their other games.

      7) Toronto Blue Jays pulled the hidden ball trick on Todd Frazier Friday night, which doesn’t happen very often.

      6) Cincinnati 2B Scooter Gennett is only second player ever to hit four HR’s in a game, in the same season where he hit four grand slams.

      5) George Clooney once sold insurance door-t0-door; I’m guessing there were some very happy housewives when they opened their door and saw him standing there.

      4) WB Mason sells a kit that prevents thieves from breaking into your safe with a magnet. Who knew that people could break into a safe that way? Now I’ll be queasy putting my stuff into the safe in my hotel room when I go to Las Vegas.

      3) Detroit Lions signed coach Jim Caldwell to a multi-year extension, making it pretty likely that offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter will be elsewhere next year, since he figures to be a popular candidate to fill head coaching vacancies……like maybe at Tennessee, where Cooter was a backup to Peyton Manning. The locals are not thrilled with current Vols coach Butch Jones.

      2) Dodgers cliched the NL West the other night; saw some ads right after that to buy NL West championship gear. Why would anyone buy this stuff? Dodgers have won the NL West five years in a row and 7 of the last 11 years, but haven’t been to the World Series since 1988.

World Series Championship gear is what you would ideally like to buy, or at least NL Champs gear.

      1) Cowboys 28, Cardinals 17— Arizona scored only 10 points on four trips to red zone, bungled game management in last minute; down 28-17, they could’ve kicked FG with 0:45 left to keep game alive, but went for TD and failed. Dallas ran 30 fewer plays (75-45) but Prescott kept plays alive with his feet and WR Butler had two big catches for 90 yards.

            • MLB Daily Line Drive: Tuesday's picks, betting odds and analysis

              Double-Play Picks

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (-115, 8)

The Cubs and Cardinals get together for Game 2 of their three-game series at Busch Stadium on Tuesday night. Last night the Cubbies had fireworks launched for road home runs in their rival's building, won over rival fans by buying them nachos, and eliminated the Cards from NL Central contention with a convincing 10-2 victory.

As if that wasn't bad enough for the Cardinals and their fans, tonight the Cubs will get their chance to pop champagne bottles at Busch...and maybe chug some Budweisers in the locker room until the sun comes up tomorrow morning.

Jake Arrieta will get the ball for the Cubbies in his second start back from his hamstring injury. Arrieta worked five innings and threw 71 pitches against the Brewers, allowing only one run. Joe Madden will likely stretch him to 80-90 pitches today and then put him away for the playoffs. Over Jake's last eight starts he owns a 1.81 ERA and a WHIP of only 1.119.

Carlos Martinez gets the ball for the Cardinals. The purple haired "ace" of the St. Louis pitching staff has an ERA of 8.49 and a WHIP of 1.6286 over his last two starts. In his last outing against the Cubs he allowed seven earned runs over 5.1 innings of work in an eventual 8-2 loss.

The Cubbies get the job done tonight and stomp on the grave of their rivals - they will however be hungover fade-bait tomorrow.

              Pick: Cubs -105

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks (-210, 9)

The Diamondbacks will host at least one game this October, but they have bigger plans in mind for this postseason and will be using this last week to position themselves in the best place possible for their one-game playoff. That starts Tuesday night when they continue their three-game set with the Giants in Arizona.

One thing the Diamondbacks will do, is get their best pitchers fully rested and healthy before the Wildcard game, as it is an all-hands-on-deck scenario. Expect Tuesday night to be the last time you see starter Robbie Ray on the mound in the regular season.

The Arizona lefty has had an outstanding season, going 14-5 with a 2.95 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP and despite the fact the fact he is coming off a rough outing, he has been mostly brilliant.

Before his last start (which the D-backs won anyway), Ray had won five straight while pitching to a 1.39 ERA, a 0.77 WHIP and racking up 55 strikeouts and walking just six.

Ray gets to face a Giants lineup that ranks dead last in OPS and home runs, and 29th in runs per game.

Meanwhile San Francisco counters with a southpaw of their own in Matt Moore. Moore’s first full season by The Bay has not gone smoothly. He 6-14, with a 5.20 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP this season and it has been even tougher for him away from AT&T Park. On the road Moore is 2-5 with a 6.51 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP.

Oh, and Moore faces a D-backs lineup that usually dominates at home, ranking second in runs and OPS at home this season.

Ray and the Diamondbacks bounce back in a big way tonight.

              Pick: Diamondbacks -1.5 (-108)

              Yesterday's Picks: 0-2
              Season To Date: 156-142-15

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking:
Parker Bridwell, Los Angeles Angels (8-3, 3.86 ERA, $1537)

Parker Bridwell takes the mound for the Angels today in Chicago against the White Sox. Bridwell is the runaway leader in our Starter Money standings for the season at $1537 and owns a team win/loss record of 15-3.

Bridwell also owns a perfect 8-0 team win/loss record on the road for his career.

Bridwell and the Angels put perfection on the line tonight at Guaranteed Rate Field as -165 favorites.

              Slumping:
Bartolo Colon, Minnesota Twins (6-14, 6.63 ERA, $-111)

We could be reaching the end of the road for "Big Sexy". The Twins may possibly give him a courtesy wave on Sunday, but other than that today may be the last real start for Bartolo Colon.

It's been a terrible season for Colon and over his last three starts he owns an ERA of 13.09 and a WHIP of 1.909. All three of those starts turned out to be losses.

"Big Sexy" and the Twins are +180 underdogs on the road against the red-hot Indians this evening.

              Tuesday's Top Trends

              * Under is 14-2 in Trevor Williams' last 16 starts overall. Orioles/Pirates Total: 8.5.
              * The Cleveland Indians are 29-2 in their last 31 games overall. -200 today vs. Twins.
              * The Texas Rangers are 26-6 in Cole Hamels' last 32 home starts. +120 today vs. Astros.
              * The Los Angeles Angels are 8-0 in Parker Bridwell's eight career road starts. -165 today @ White Sox.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

According to the forecast, there shouldn’t be any precipitation that will interrupt any of today's games on the MLB schedule. It feels like we haven't had any baseball rain in weeks. Did we just jinx the weather?

The winds are also very light across the league today. No games on the schedule will feature double-digit wind speeds.

              Ump Of The Day

Dan Iassogna will be calling balls and strikes tonight at Coors Field in Denver for the game between the Rockies and the Marlins. Iassogna is the No. 4 homer umpire in baseball this season at 19-7. A $100 wager on the home team in all of his games would tally up to $1037 thus far.

Over the last two seasons home teams own a 64.9 winning percentage in his games (37-20) and the Marlins are only 6-24 in their last 30 contests with Iassogna in pads.

The Rockies are solid home favorites at -155 tonight.

CLEVELAND (AP) Brian Dozier's three-run homer in the eighth inning pushed Minnesota to the brink of a playoff berth as the Twins rallied for an 8-6 victory over Cleveland on Tuesday night. The Indians lost for just the third time in 32 games.

Dozier connected for his 33rd homer against Bryan Shaw (4-6) as the Twins lowered their magic number for clinching a playoff berth to one.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 38th homer and drove in four runs for the Indians, whose 29-3 mark over 32 games is the best in the majors since the 1947 New York Yankees accomplished the feat.

Taylor Rogers (7-3), one of a club-record 10 pitchers used by Twins manager Paul Molitor, got two outs in the seventh and Matt Belisle worked the ninth for his eighth save.

                  YANKEES 6, RAYS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Hicks robbed Wilson Ramos of a first-inning grand slam in the outfielder's return from the disabled list, and the Yankees clinched home-field advantage if they end up in the AL wild-card game next week.

Tampa Bay's first three batters reached against rookie Jordan Montgomery (9-7), and Hicks leaped at the 385-foot sign in right-center to get his glove above the wall. He squeezed the webbing tight, preventing the ball from popping out and limiting Ramos to a sacrifice fly.

Assured no worse than a wild-card berth, the Yankees closed within three games of AL East-leading Boston with five remaining.

Tampa Bay (76-81) was eliminated from playoff contention and missed the postseason for the fourth straight year. Blake Snell (4-7) got the loss.

                  ROCKIES 6, MARLINS 0

DENVER (AP) - Trevor Story hit a three-run homer and Tyler Anderson pitched seven superb innings, helping Colorado maintain its slim lead for the second NL wild card.

The Rockies notched their first win over the Marlins in five tries this season and stayed 1 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee.

Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Colorado. Anderson (6-6) allowed four hits and walked none.

Miami starter Jose Urena (14-7) yielded six runs over five innings. The right-hander allowed a total of six runs in four previous starts this month.

                  ANGELS 9, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Mike Trout hit his 31st homer, Albert Pujols joined Alex Rodriguez as the only players with 100 RBIs in 14 seasons, and the fading Angels won on the road.

Los Angeles remained five games behind Minnesota for the final AL wild card with five to play.

Trout, Brandon Phillips and Luis Valbuena homered off Chris Volstad (1-1) during a six-run second inning. Parker Bridwell (9-3) improved to 5-0 in nine road starts.

Jose Abreu had three hits for Chicago, including his 32nd and 33rd homers.

BLUE JAYS 9, RED SOX 4

BOSTON (AP) - Red Sox ace Chris Sale matched a career worst by giving up four home runs in a playoff tuneup, including a pair to Josh Donaldson.

Teoscar Hernandez hit one of his two homers off Sale, and Kendrys Morales had the other against the left-hander. Sale (17-8) allowed five runs in five innings and surrendered multiple homers for the third time in five starts.

J.A. Happ (10-11) struck out nine while pitching seven strong innings for the last-place Blue Jays. He was charged with one run and four hits.

                  PIRATES 10, ORIOLES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Andrew McCutchen hit his first career grand slam and drove in eight runs, powering Pittsburgh to the victory.

McCutchen raised a fist in triumph as he rounded the bases after connecting against Kevin Gausman (11-11) in the second inning. He also hit an RBI double in the first, singled in the fifth and belted a three-run homer in the seventh.

McCutchen's eight RBIs were one off the franchise record and the most by a Pirate since Jason Bay in 2004.

Trevor Williams (7-9) pitched six innings of one-run ball and rookie Steven Brault finished the five-hitter for his first career save.

                  ASTROS 14, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Carlos Correa, Brian McCann and Cameron Maybin each drove in three runs, and Houston clinched no worse than the second-best record in the American League.

Houston (97-60) trails Cleveland by one game with five to play in the race for the league's best record. The Indians own the tiebreaker, having won the season series.

Astros left-hander Dallas Keuchel (14-5) struck out eight while pitching six effective innings.

Rangers ace Cole Hamels (11-5) was charged with six runs in three-plus innings.

                  CARDINALS 8, CUBS 7

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Tommy Pham and Randal Grichuk homered, and the Cardinals denied the Cubs a chance at clinching the NL Central title.

Matt Carpenter and Jedd Gyorko also connected for St. Louis, which is 2 1/2 games back in the race for the second NL wild card. Zach Duke (1-1) got the win and Juan Nicasio earned his fifth save.

Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer for Chicago, and Ben Zobrist also went deep. Jake Arrieta (14-10) was charged with three earned runs in three innings.

The Cubs (88-69) still lead the division by five games over second-place Milwaukee.

                  BREWERS 7, REDS 6

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Domingo Santana hit a three-run homer in Milwaukee's four-run first, and the Brewers held on for the win.

Milwaukee remained 1 1/2 games behind Colorado for the second NL wild card. Josh Hader (2-3) earned the win, and Corey Knebel worked the ninth for his 38th save.

Scott Schebler, Zack Cozart and Jesse Winker homered for last-place Cincinnati, which has dropped seven in a row. Rookie Deck McGuire (0-1) allowed four earned runs in three innings.

                  PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jake Thompson pitched four-hit ball into the sixth inning, and Philadelphia spoiled Bryce Harper's return from a knee injury.

With the loss, Washington locked itself into the second seed in the NL playoffs behind the Dodgers. The Nationals will host the NL Central champion in a Division Series beginning Oct. 6 at Nationals Park.

Thompson (3-2) was charged with a run in five-plus innings. Hector Neris struck out the side in the ninth for his 25th save.

Harper played for the first time since hyperextending and bruising his left knee on Aug. 12. He was 0 for 2 with a walk before being lifted in the fifth inning.

Washington left-hander Gio Gonzalez (15-8) allowed three runs in five innings.

                  METS 4, BRAVES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Travis Taijeron hit a game-ending RBI single in the ninth, sending the Mets to the win.

New York was stymied by R.A. Dickey much of the night and trailed 3-0 in the seventh before Kevin Plawecki hit a two-run homer off the 42-year-old knuckleballer. Asdrubal Cabrera tied it with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Jeurys Familia (2-2) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Dickey, who won the NL Cy Young Award with the Mets in 2012, allowed five hits in 6 2/3 innings. A.J. Minter (0-1) got the loss.

                  ROYALS 2, TIGERS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jason Vargas moved into a tie for the major league lead with his 18th victory, leading the Royals over the struggling Tigers.

Vargas (18-10) went six innings to match Cleveland's Corey Kluber and the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw for most wins in the majors. He gave up a run and five hits.

The Tigers have dropped eight straight to fall to 4-21 in September. Anibal Sanchez (3-6) took the loss, allowing two runs and seven hits in six innings.

Mike Minor worked the ninth for his third save in five chances.

                  • MLB notebook: Nationals OF Harper returns from knee injury
                    September 26, 2017

The Washington Nationals reinstated outfielder Bryce Harper from the 10-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Harper returns to the roster after missing 41 games with a hyperextended left knee. The 2015 National League Most Valuable Player sustained the injury after his spike slipped on a wet first base bag while trying to beat out a ground ball in a contest against the San Francisco Giants on Aug. 12.

Harper ranked second in the NL in both OPS (1.034) and runs (92) and fourth in on-base percentage (.419), batting average (.326) and homers (29) at the time of his injury. The five-time All-Star has 87 RBIs and 92 runs scored in 106 games this season.

--Boston Red Sox All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts is day-to-day with an injured left wrist and was not in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Betts aggravated the injury during Monday's loss to the Blue Jays and departed in the eighth inning. He underwent a CT scan and no structural damage was discovered. Betts said he experiences a "sharp pain" when he swings the bat. He is hitting .265 with 23 homers and 101 RBIs.

Red Sox infielder Eduardo Nunez aggravated a knee injury during Monday's game and also departed the contest. He is not in Tuesday's starting lineup either, and Boston manager John Farrell said there is no timetable for his return.

--Center fielder Aaron Hicks was activated from the disabled list by the New York Yankees.

Hicks, 27, returns from his second stint on the 10-day DL this season with a strained oblique.

The Yankees were using Hicks in the No. 2 spot in the batting order and playing him daily in center field before he strained his left oblique earlier this month.

                    • LEADING OFF: Severino tunes up, Altuve at 199 hits
                      September 27, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Wednesday:

                      LOOKING AHEAD

Luis Severino (13-6, 3.03 ERA) gets a postseason tuneup for the Yankees when he starts against Tampa Bay with an eye toward his potential assignment in the AL wild-card game. New York still hopes to chase down first-place Boston in the AL East, but is likely to host Minnesota in the one-game playoff next Tuesday night. Severino has allowed one run or none in nine of 13 starts since the All-Star break, going 8-2 with a 2.34 ERA. He will face the Rays on six days' rest.

                      LITTLE BIG MAN

AL West champion Houston hopes to have Jose Altuve back in the lineup at Texas after the All-Star second baseman didn't start Tuesday night. Altuve, a leading contender for AL MVP, was hit by a 95 mph fastball Monday and left the game. The team said X-rays were negative and he had a bruised left forearm. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday the 5-foot-6 Altuve was fine, just sore. Altuve leads the majors with a .348 batting average and needs one hit to reach 200 for the fourth straight season.

                      PROVE IT

A year after missing much of Cleveland's run to the World Series because of an injury, Danny Salazar is trying to show he's even worth a postseason roster spot. The right-hander has been in and out of the rotation lately, and he's allowed five runs in 3 1/3 innings over his past two starts. He'll get a chance to find a rhythm in a start against Minnesota.

                      POSTSEASON PREP

A couple playoff-bound pitchers get their final tuneups before long layoffs. Houston right-hander Justin Verlander tries to win his fifth straight start in a game against Texas, while Dodgers left-hander Rich Hill (1-8, 3.50) takes a 2.45 September ERA into a start against San Diego. Both pitchers will then wait over a week to pitch in the playoffs.

                      DRONING ON

It's that time of year in Cleveland - the Indians are chasing a World Series, LeBron James is gearing up for another season, and Trevor Bauer is talking about his drones. Cleveland could do without the latter. The righty lost a drone Monday in a suburban park, and he posted a message on Twitter asking the person who took it to return it as soon as possible. Last year, Bauer sliced open his right pinky tinkering with a drone during the ALCS and needed stitches. He started Game 3 in Toronto, but didn't make it through the first inning before the cut opened, making it impossible for him to pitch.

                      • Fan at Yankee Stadium ejected for yelling pitch location
                        September 27, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) A fan sitting behind home plate has been ejected from Yankee Stadium for shouting the location of pitches during New York's 6-1 win over Tampa Bay.

Yankees slugger Gary Sanchez was batting with a full count against Austin Pruitt in the eighth inning Tuesday night when plate umpire Dan Bellino walked to the backstop and spoke to a member of the team's security staff, directing that the fan be removed. Bellino then walked toward second base and conferred with crew chief Jerry Layne.

Play resumed after a break of about 90 seconds. Sanchez fouled off a pitch, then hit a bloop RBI single.

Sanchez and Rays catcher Wilson Ramos said the fan had been yelling in Spanish: ''Outside! Outside!''

Ramos said the spectator's shouts were accurate.

''That was not professional. If you come to the game, you're asked to enjoy the game,'' he said. ''Everybody's supposed to see the ball and just react with pitches ... so to me, it's like cheating.''

                        Both managers praised the ejection.

''Rightfully so. That shouldn't happen,'' the Yankees' Joe Girardi said.

Said Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash: ''The Yankees handled it really well and got him out of there.''

Wednesday’s List of 13: College hoop makes news, for the wrong reasons

                          13) What a year this has been.

If you read this site a lot, you know I love college basketball; this week, four assistant coaches at big schools (Arizona, Auburn, Oklahoma St, USC) were arrested by the FBI in connection with a federal corruption investigation, and that might only be the tip of the iceberg in a three-year FBI investigation that focused on coaches being paid tons of cash to steer NBA-bound players toward sports agents, financial advisers and apparel companies.

The scumweasel shit has hit the freakin’ fan. Oy.

                          12) This isn’t an NCAA thing, where the NCAA gets so mad at Kentucky that they put Western Kentucky on probation (to borrow an old Jerry Tarkanian line). This is serious.

This is the F. Bleepin’ I. As in unlimited resources to uncover whatever hideousness lies beneath the surface of the investigation. You can lie to the NCAA, but lying JUST ONCE to the FBI is a freakin’ felony, so the truth is going to come out and a lot of it will be ugly.

                          11) This is nothing new; what is new is the FBI being in charge of the investigation.

Spike Lee’s 1998 movie He Got Game showed a lot of this stuff; Nick Nolte was in Blue Chips in 1994, which touched on a veteran coach cheating to get better players.

This is nothing new except for the arrests and all that.

                          10) Six non-coaches were also arrested, including Jim Gatto, director of global sports marketing at Adidas, who helped funnel money to players’ families.

As Alfre Woodard’s character (mother of a big recruit) said to Nick Nolte in Blue Chips, “They may be the rules, but they’re not my rules.”

Recruits families have had their hands out for decades. What happens next? Stay tuned.

                          9) Of course, this all happens the day after my Blue Ribbon Yearbook shows up on my IPad; lot of it is going to be irrelevant, starting with the rumor than Rick Pitino may be gone at Louisville as early as Wednesday morning. Who knows what other schools will wind up getting torched by the scope of this investigation— the report was 100 pages long.

Part of the investigation centers on a players’ family asking for/getting $100K for their son to sign with the Cardinals.

                          8) From CBSSports.com:

“Andy Miller, a prominent agent with the company who represents Kristaps Porzingis, Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, Myles Turner, Austin Rivers and many others, reportedly had his computer confiscated by the FBI.”

Christian Dawkins was fired by Miller’s agency in May; he is connected to many of the coaches who were arrested.

                          7) How did all this start? More from CBSSports:

“A financial advisor (now revealed as Martin Blazer, per multiple reports), who was charged in 2016 by the SEC with fraud, became cooperating witness after those charges were filed. The witness informed the FBI, as means of cooperation, that he could bring light to fraud and corruption in the world of college recruiting because said witness had been party to it in the past.”

In other words, if you’re a writer for the Showtime series Billions, you sit back with your feet up, hit copy/paste a few dozen times, change some names and you have a whole story arc for your show already finished. Real life is stranger than fiction.

                          6) Wonder how many college coaches had IT guys scrubbing their hard drives Tuesday. That goes for agents, investment weasels and I guess people who work for sneaker companies.

                          5) I watch a lot of late night TV: CSI, Law and Order, Billions, Ray Donovan. Once someone gets charged with a crime, he amazingly becomes much more willing to rat out others who might get his sentence lessened. Funny how that works.

Will be interesting to see how much farther this will go.

                          4) Some good news: Dallas Mavericks lent JJ Barea their team plane Monday so he could deliver supplies to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico. Barea is bringing his mother/grandmother back to this country. Good for Mark Cuban for doing that.

                          3) Random question; If Gregg Popovich ran for President in 2020, wouldn’t he win? He went to the Air Force Academy, he is a respected leader and a no-nonsense guy. I’d vote for him.

                          2) It was 89 degrees in beautiful upstate New York Tuesday; today it will once again approach 90, then things will go back to normal and it will get cool, as September ends.

2017 is going to go down as a year with a lot of news, but not a lot of it good news.

                          1) Carolina Panthers’ owner Jerry Richardson is a different guy; he fired his kids, he’s had a heart transplant, and now, he is the only NFL owner who isn’t supporting his players coming out and speaking about recent political events. The players aren’t happy; apparently there was a meeting in Charlotte about all this Tuesday.

Panthers have a minority QB and a minority coach who is the son of a military veteran; this will be worth watching. Things far less important than this have fractured teams.
