        • MLB roundup: Yankees cool off Red Sox
          August 19, 2017

BOSTON -- CC Sabathia came off the disabled list and outpitched Chris Sale and became the American League's all-time leading left-hander in strikeouts in leading the New York Yankees to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night.

Sabathia (10-5, 3-0 against Boston) passed Mickey Lolich with his 2,680th career strikeout en route to working six innings and allowing two hits. He has yielded two runs in 20 innings against the first-place Red Sox, who saw their lead in the American League East drop to four games over New York.

Tyler Austin crashed a three-run homer in his first career at-bat against Sale (14-5) in the second inning and Todd Frazier hit his second homer in as many nights for the Yankees. Boston lost for only the third time in its last 16 games.

          Dodgers 3, Tigers 0

DETROIT -- Recently returned Adrian Gonzalez lined a single to right that scored new acquisition Curtis Granderson from second with two outs in the seventh inning, breaking a scoreless tie and starting Los Angeles on its way to victory over Detroit.

Los Angeles' latest win streak stands at six games with 21 wins in its last 24 games and 52 victories out of its last 61 to achieve baseball's best record at 87-34. Yasmani Grandal hit his 16th home run of the season in the ninth to make it 3-0.

Ross Stripling (3-4) earned the victory with two scoreless relief innings. Brandon Morrow pitched the eighth and Kenley Jansen earned his 33rd save for working the ninth.

          Angels 5, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE -- Mike Trout and Luis Valbuena each homered twice in the first four innings as Los Angeles defeated Baltimore.

Trout's first-inning homer gave the 26-year-old 25 for the season. He became the third player in history to hit 25 homers six times before his age 26 season. Eddie Mathews and Frank Robinson are the others.

Angels starter JC Ramirez (11-10) dodged some trouble in the early innings as the Orioles put runners in scoring position in the first and third but came away allowing only one run. He went 5 2/3 innings before leaving with right forearm irritation in the sixth.

          Indians 5, Royals 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Trevor Bauer, Bryan Shaw and Cody Allen combined on a seven-hitter as Cleveland beat skidding Kansas City.

The Indians have outscored the Royals 15-1 in the first two games of this series. Bauer (12-8) gave up seven hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. Shaw and Allen did not allow a baserunner.

Jason Vargas (14-7), who has only two wins since June 30 after being named to the All-Star Game, yielded four runs, six hits and three walks while striking out seven in 4 2/3 innings. Kansas City is 6-12 in August.

          Astros 3, Athletics 0

HOUSTON -- Collin McHugh worked six shutout innings and a reconfigured bullpen closed out Houston's victory over Oakland.

McHugh (1-2) earned his first victory on the season in his sixth start after missing three-plus months with an elbow injury. It was a bit of a rocky road for McHugh, who retired the side in order only once and relied on grounders and his defense to eliminate baserunners.

The Astros turned three double plays behind McHugh, who allowed six hits and walked one batter while striking out three, and six overall.

Marwin Gonzalez delivered a two-run single in the fourth inning and Alex Bregman homered in the ninth -- his second in two days.

          Cubs 4, Blue Jays 3

CHICAGO -- Javier Baez drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the sixth inning and Chicago hung on to beat Toronto.

Ian Happ scored on Baez's single up the middle after drawing a walk and advancing on a groundout. On Friday, Baez drove in three runs in the Cubs' 7-4 series-opening victory over the Blue Jays.

Happ also homered and had an RBI single for Chicago. Cubs starter Jose Quintana (4-2) struck out eight and allowed two runs, four hits and two walks (one intentional) in six innings.

          Twins 5, Diamondbacks 0

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jose Berrios posted seven scoreless innings, and Minnesota exploded for five runs in the fourth inning against Zack Greinke to beat Arizona.

Joe Mauer had three hits, a walk and an RBI for the Twins, and Brian Dozier added a pair of hits as Minnesota maintained a spot as one of the American League wild-card teams with their third straight victory.

Berrios (11-5) allowed two hits and struck out seven batters, lowering his ERA to 3.99 in a strong sophomore season. Greinke (14-6) lasted only four innings, giving up five runs (four earned), seven hits and a season high-tying four walks. He struck out four.

          Pirates 6, Cardinals 4

PITTSBURGH -- Starling Marte was 3-for-5 with one of three Pittsburgh homers and Chad Kuhl didn't let a long rain delay bother him as the Pirates snapped a six-game losing streak.

Pittsburgh pounded out 12 hits and rode a five-run second inning. Kuhl (6-8) retired 11 of the 13 batters he faced after the delay, with only one hit. Overall, he gave up one run on three hits, with six strikeouts and one walk, in five innings.

St. Louis' Michael Wacha (9-6) got rocked after he pitched a perfect first and was out of the game after four innings. He gave up five runs and seven hits, including two homers, with three strikeouts and two walks.

          Mets 8, Marlins 1

NEW YORK -- Wilmer Flores and Kevin Plawecki each hit two-run homers during a seven-run sixth inning as New York snapped a five-game losing streak.

Rookie Dominic Smith hit his first Citi Field homer for the Mets, who benefited from three Miami errors in the sixth inning. New York's Rafael Montero (2-8) allowed one run, six hits and three walks while striking out five in six innings.

Marcell Ozuna had three singles, including an RBI in the sixth that broke a scoreless tie, for the Marlins, who equaled a team record by hitting into five double plays. The five double plays induced by the Mets also tied a team mark.

          Mariners 7, Rays 6

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Mitch Haniger's grand slam got Seattle an early lead en route to its fourth straight victory.

The Mariners had a 7-2 lead in the sixth inning and held off a rally from Tampa Bay, which had scored nine runs in its previous 10 home games. The Rays have dropped four in a row and 12 of their last 15 as they fade from the American League wild-card chase.

Logan Morrison had a pinch-hit solo home run in the bottom of the ninth -- his 29th of the season -- to get Tampa Bay within a run. Edwin Diaz regrouped to strike out Kevin Kiermaier and pinch hitter Corey Dickerson hit a weak ground ball as he recorded his 27th save.

          Reds 11, Braves 8

ATLANTA -- Scott Schebler broke out of a 2-for-40 slump and Scooter Gennett hit his third grand slam of the season as Cincinnati opened up a seven-run lead and held off Atlanta.

Schebler was 3 for 4 with double, walk, two runs scored and a RBI in his first start since late July after coming off the disabled list the day before and drawing a walk as a pinch hitter. Gennett's slam, his 21st homer of the year, gave him five RBIs for the game.

The Braves lost despite three homers, the last a three-run pinch shot by Matt Adams in the ninth inning off Blake Wood. Atlanta got the tying run to the plate, but Michael Lorenzen got Matt Kemp, just off the disabled list, to bounce into a force at third base to end the game.

          • MLB notebook: Granderson joins Dodgers; Pederson to minors
            August 19, 2017

Newly acquired outfielder Curtis Granderson was activated by the Los Angeles Dodgers and was in the starting lineup Saturday afternoon against the Detroit Tigers.

It was among a flurry of moves by the Dodgers, who placed right-hander Yu Darvish on the 10-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Joc Pederson and left-hander Edward Paredes to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Darvish, a trade-deadline acquisition from the Texas Rangers, is dealing with lower-back tightness. The move to the DL for the right-hander was retroactive to Aug. 17. The 31-year-old has made three starts for the Dodgers, posting a 2-0 record and 2.50 ERA. He was 6-9 with a 4.01 ERA in 22 starts with the Rangers this season.

Los Angeles acquired Granderson and cash considerations from the New York Mets on Friday night in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations, creating a logjam for playing time in the outfield.

Pederson was an obvious candidate to be benched or demoted to the minors as he continues to battle a horrific slump. He was 1-for-3 in Friday's win at Detroit, only his second hit in his last 41 at-bats.

--The Washington Nationals brought back one ace less than 24 hours after placing another on the disabled list.

Right-hander Stephen Strasburg was activated to start Saturday night's game at the San Diego Padres after fellow right-hander Max Scherzer went on the DL Friday night because of neck inflammation.

Strasburg (10-3, 3.25 ERA) has been sidelined with a right elbow nerve impingement since pitching two scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 23. He went on the disabled list four days later. The No. 1 overall draft pick by Washington in 2009, Strasburg pitched five innings in a rehab start at Class A Potomac on Monday, allowing one run and three hits over five innings.

Scherzer (12-5) was scheduled to start Friday night's game but was a late scratch due to a recurring neck issue. The move is retroactive to Aug. 15.

--The Chicago Cubs claimed veteran catcher Rene Rivera off waivers from the New York Mets to add insurance at the position.

Rivera has played all or part of nine major league seasons with the Seattle Mariners (2004-06), Minnesota Twins (2011), San Diego Padres (2013-14), Tampa Bay Rays (2015) and Mets (2016-17).

The 34-year-old is a career .215 hitter with 34 homers and 141 RBIs in 453 games. With the Mets in 2017, he was batting .230 with eight homers and 23 RBIs in 54 games.

The Cubs lost catcher Willson Contreras to a hamstring injury on Aug. 9 and traded last month for Alex Avila from the Detroit Tigers. Rookie Victor Caratini was promoted from the minors after Contreras went down. To make room for Rivera on the 40-man roster, right-hander Aaron Brooks was designated for assignment.

--The Kansas City Royals placed right-handed pitcher Neftali Feliz on the disabled list because of right ulnar nerve palsy.

His DL stint is retroactive to Aug. 14, making him eligible to return on Aug. 24.

In a corresponding move, the Royals recalled left-handed pitcher Eric Skoglund from Triple-A Omaha before Saturday's game against the Cleveland Indians.

Feliz signed a one-year, $5.35 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers in the offseason but was released on June 19 after he went 1-5 with a 6.00 ERA, 21 strikeouts and 15 walks in 27 innings, while allowing eight home runs.

--The Texas Rangers placed outfielder Carlos Gomez on the 10-day disabled list for the excision of a cyst behind his right shoulder, the team announced.

Gomez, 31, has not played since last Sunday. The move is retroactive to Aug. 16 and the first date he would be eligible to return to the active roster is Aug. 26.

Gomez is batting .251 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs in 86 games (83 starts) this season. He was also on the disabled list from May 15 to June 15 with a right hamstring strain.

To take his place on the 25-man roster, the Rangers recalled infielder Phil Gosselin from Triple-A Round Rock.

--The Chicago White Sox placed right-hander Reynaldo Lopez on the 10-day disabled list with a strained back.

The team also called up right-hander Danny Farquhar from Triple-A Charlotte prior to Saturday's night's road game against the Texas Rangers.

Lopez, 23, left Thursday night's 9-8 loss to the Rangers in the fifth inning with soreness on his right side. The DL move is retroactive to Aug. 18. He is 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in 10 1/3 innings in two starts with the White Sox this season.

Farquhar, 30, was signed by the White Sox as a minor league free agent on July 24 after he was designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays on June 29 and released July 19. He made 37 relief appearances with the Rays this season, going 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA in 35 innings.

--The Seattle Mariners activated outfielder Mitch Haniger from the disabled list and placed outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the 10-day DL with a right groin strain.

In addition, the Mariners recalled right-hander Casey Lawrence from Tacoma and optioned right-hander Sam Gaviglio to the Triple-A club. Haniger, 26, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on July 30 after being struck in the face by a pitch in the second inning on July 29. In 57 games with the Mariners this season, Haniger is batting .255 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs.

Dyson, 33, is hitting .255 with five home runs, 30 RBIs and 28 stolen bases in 109 games with Seattle this season. The DL move is retroactive to Aug. 17.

Lawrence, 29, is appearing in his fourth stint with the Mariners this season. In 13 relief appearances with Seattle, he is 1-0 with a 5.64 ERA in 30 1/3 innings. Gaviglio, 27, was recalled from Tacoma on Aug. 15 but did not appear with the Mariners during that span.

--The St. Louis Cardinals called up right-handed reliever Josh Lucas from Triple-A Memphis.

The team also optioned right-hander Mike Mayers to Memphis after Friday night's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Lucas, 26, will be making his major league debut when he appears in his first game with the Cardinals. He is 8-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 43 appearances at Memphis, converting 14 of 17 saves.

Mayers, 26, pitched two-thirds of an inning in the Cardinals' 11-10 victory over the Pirates at PNC Park. He faced seven batters and allowed five runs (four earned) with four hits and a walk.

            • Umpires in Detroit take stand against verbal abuse
              August 19, 2017

DETROIT -- Two of the four umpires working Saturday's Los Angeles-Detroit Major League Baseball game wore white wristbands in support of the umpire association's stand against what it feels is increasing verbal abuse of its members.

"This is in support of major league umpires," crew chief Bill Miller said after the Dodgers beat the Tigers 3-0. "We're directing all questions to our attorney so that everything comes from one mouth."

Miller, who worked second base, and third base umpire Todd Tichenor were the only two of the four spotted wearing the white wristbands.

There is some thought the wristband wearing came about because Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler was fined and not suspended for derogatory remarks Tuesday about umpire Angel Hernandez.

Hernandez, working home plate, kicked Kinsler and Detroit manager Brad Ausmus out of Monday's game for arguing balls and strikes.

"He's not the focus of the situation," Miller said of Kinsler. "That's just part of the puzzle. We've had several instances where umpires have been called out or challenged.

"Ejections seem to be up, and we just feel like we need to band together and let people know that we are human beings."

              • LEADING OFF: Cardinals-Pirates meet in Little League Classic
                August 19, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Sunday:

                LITTLE BIG LEAGUE

A day after they played at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, the St. Louis Cardinals and Pirates will fly about 200 miles to central Pennsylvania for the Little League Classic in Williamsport. Following the morning trip, the teams will take part in Little League-themed activities and then play at night at the home of the Williamsport Crosscutters, the Philadelphia Phillies' affiliate in the Class A New York-Penn League. The stadium seats under 2,500 and was formerly known as Bowman Field, which opened in 1926.

                INTER-TESTING

Tigers star Justin Verlander takes on the team with the majors' best record when he faces the Los Angeles Dodgers at Comerica Park. It will be the 42nd career interleague start for Verlander - he's 29-5 against National League opponents.

                TRY AGAIN

Boston right-hander Rick Porcello has won his last three starts, leaving the AL Cy Young Award winner at 7-14 with a 4.60 ERA in 25 outings. He's 0-3 with a 3.79 ERA in three starts against the Yankees this year as the AL East leaders host them at Fenway Park.

                ON THE MOVE

All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson has made a late-game switch to shortstop for Toronto two days in a row at Wrigley Field. Before this weekend against the Cubs, his only prior experience in the majors at shortstop was one inning for the Oakland A's in 2013.

                BACK AND FORTH

Mets ace Jacob deGrom (13-6, 3.35 ERA) struggled in his last outing, allowing five runs in 7 1/3 innings at Yankee Stadium. He has alternated wins and losses over his last four outings going into this matchup against the visiting Marlins.

                • Sunday's Diamond Notes
                  August 19, 2017

Hottest team: Twins (10-3 last 13) vs. Diamondbacks

Minnesota likely won’t catch Cleveland in the AL Central, but the Twins are hanging around in the Wild Card race. The Twins blanked Zack Greinke and the D-backs on Saturday, 5-0 as Minnesota has outscored Arizona, 15-0 since falling behind 3-0 on Friday night. In spite of dropping two of three to the Indians in their previous series, Minnesota is tied with Los Angeles for the second Wild Card position in the AL behind the Yankees.

The Twins seek the sweep of the Snakes on Sunday at Target Field as Minnesota is riding a seven-game winning streak against National League opponents. Minnesota turns to wily veteran Bartolo Colon in the finale as the Twins have won two of his last three starts, but the right-hander has yielded three earned runs or more in five of six outings since joining Minnesota in mid-July.

Coldest team: Tigers (0-6 last six) vs. Dodgers

Since winning the pennant in 2006, Detroit has been a force in the American League by falling short of .500 only twice. That number is set to move to three as the Tigers have slipped to 53-69 after dropping 12 of their last 14 games. The red-hot Dodgers shut out the Tigers on Saturday, 3-0 as Detroit received a solid pitching performance from Michael Fulmer, but an error by third baseman Nick Castellanos kept L.A. alive in the seventh, eventually allowing the first run to score.

The Tigers have won only three games since August 4, but two of those victories were credited to Justin Verlander. The former Cy Young winner and Most Valuable Player heads to the mound on Sunday looking to avoid the sweep, as Detroit is 3-1 in his past four starts. Verlander has won both of his interleague starts this season, beating the Diamondbacks and Pirates.

Hottest pitcher: Parker Bridwell, Angels (7-1, 2.88 ERA)

Los Angeles doesn’t have a legitimate ace in its rotation, but Bridwell is turning into a viable option at the top. In his first full Major League season, Bridwell has compiled eight quality starts, including four quality outings on the road. Bridwell has become an automatic play on the highway as the Angels own a perfect 5-0 away record, including victories over the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mariners. The right-hander beat the Orioles at home earlier this month, while looking to defeat Baltimore again, four months after the O’s traded Bridwell to the Angels.

Coldest pitcher: Jharel Cotton, Athletics (5-10, 5.92 ERA)

The Oakland right-hander has been knocked around of late by putting up scary identical stat-lines in his last two starts. Cotton threw 100 pitches, lasted six innings, and allowed eight hits and six earned runs in home losses to Kansas City and Seattle, while last picking up a victory against the White Sox on June 23. Since tossing seven scoreless innings against the Royals in April, the A’s are 2-5 in his last seven road starts, including a 9-4 setback at Houston on April 28.

Biggest OVER run: Reds (12-2 last 14)

Cincinnati went deep three times on Friday, but the Reds finished UNDER the total in a 5-3 victory over the Braves. The Reds and Braves lit up the scoreboard on Saturday as each team plated four runs in the ninth inning, but Cincinnati beat Atlanta once again, 11-8. Cincinnati shoots for its first road sweep since early April at Pittsburgh as Luis Castillo heads to the mound for the Reds. Castillo has tossed at least six innings in each of his past four appearances, as the Reds are 4-1 to the UNDER in his last five road starts.

Biggest UNDER run: Blue Jays (8-2 last 10)

Toronto tries to avoid the sweep at Chicago after dropping a 4-3 decision at Wrigley Field on Saturday. The Jays continue to be inconsistent at the plate, scoring four runs or fewer in five of the past six contests, while losing four of their last five games away from Rogers Center. Marco Estrada looks to bounce back from a dreadful start against Tampa Bay in which was tagged for six earned runs in 4.1 innings. Estrada has been strong on the highway by tossing seven innings each against the Astros and White Sox, but the OVER is 4-1 in his last five road outings.

Matchup to watch: Cardinals vs. Pirates

These two NL Central rivals finish off their four-game series on Sunday night, but it won’t be at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Things will shift over to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the home of the Little League World Series in the “MLB Little League Classic” as the Pirates seek the split of their set. Pittsburgh held off St. Louis on Saturday, 6-4 to snap a six-game losing streak, while dropping the Cardinals 2 ½ games behind the Cubs in the NL Central race.

Ivan Nova has drawn six road assignments in his last eight starts since the beginning of July as the Pirates have won only three of those outings. In his past two starts against the Tigers and Brewers on the road, the Bucs plated a total of one run, as Pittsburgh lost both of those games to fall to 1-6 in his previous seven road outings. This will technically go down as a home start, as Pittsburgh has won his past five home outings.

Mike Leake needs to tighten things up as the Cardinals have posted a 2-6 record in his last eight starts, including an 0-4 mark in his past four appearances away from Busch Stadium. The Redbirds have won two of Leake’s three starts against the Pirates this season, while St. Louis owns a 7-5 record against Pittsburgh in 2017.

                  Betcha didn’t know:
The defending AL champion Indians are hitting their stride as they improved to 8-2 on their current 11-game road trip following Saturday’s victory at Kansas City. Cleveland is finishing up its fourth series with Kansas City on Sunday as the Indians won the first three series finales by a combined score of 19-1.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-210) vs. Athletics

Biggest public underdog: Brewers (+120) at Rockies

Biggest line move: Padres (+105 to -105) vs. Nationals

                      — DL moves:
Washington puts P Max Scherzer (neck) back on the DL
Dodgers put P Yu Darvish on the DL.

Sunday’s List of 13: Random stuff for a summer Sunday……..

                      13) Lot of major league umpires wore white wristbands Saturday to protest Ian Kinsler not being suspended after he verbally thrashed umpire Angel Hernandez earlier this week.

Earlier this month, umpire Joe West was suspended for three days, simply for saying that Adrian Beltre complained more than any other player.

The statement from MLB is clear; players matter more than umpires.

                      12) Mets’ game Friday night ended around midnight; Curtis Granderson was traded right after the game, and was in Detroit Saturday afternoon, batting 5th for the Dodgers in a game that started at 4:00. Joc Pederson was sent to AAA to make room for Granderson.

                      11) Is great to hear 82-year old Dick Enberg calling the Dodgers-Tigers games this weekend. One of the all-time great broadcasters, Mr Enberg called Padre games up until last season. To me, he is best-known for doing college basketball on NBC in the late 70’s/80’s.

                      10) Umpire Adam Hamari is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; he had the plate in Detroit Saturday, and had lot of family at the game. Do friends/relatives of umpires cheer loudly for good calls? Do they take grief if a call goes against the home team?

                      9) Giancarlo Stanton is the 4th big leaguer to hit 23 homers in a 35-game span; the other three were Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa.

                      8) Brooklyn Nets will play regular season games against the Thunder and Heat in Mexico City in December.

                      7) Detroit’s Justin Upton hit a homer Friday night; when he was between 2nd and 3rd base, he suddenly backtracked and went back to touch first base again, just to make sure he got it. Never saw that before If you miss first base, you dion’t even get credit for a hit, much less a homer, run scored and an RBI.

                      6) Tight end Nick O’Leary caught three passes for 50 yards for Buffalo Thursday night; the Florida State alum is the grandson of golfing great Jack Nicklaus.

                      5) Not only did Joc Pederson get sent to AAA, but San Diego sent RF Hunter Renfroe down to AAA El Paso— he was in an 8-for-64 skid at the time of his demotion.

                      4) 53-year old Davis Love III is three shots out of the lead after three rounds of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina. Love’s son is also in the Wyndham field; the last time a golfer won a PGA Tour event when his son was in the field? Craig Stadler, at the 2003 BC Open.

                      3) Seattle Seahawks lost starting LT George Fant for the year with an ACL injury; Fant was a basketball player at Western Kentucky but had improved enough to become an NFL starter.

                      2) Dodgers are now 52-9 in their last 61 games— this is a historic run, which won’t mean a thing once the playoffs start. Clayton Kershaw better get healthy.

                      1) Former Boston Bruins’ coach/TSN hockey announcer Don Cherry sang Take Me Out to the Ballgame at Wrigley Field Saturday, dressed in a suit jacket, with, um……cherries on it. Cherry was a really good coach who is a complete character as a TV analyst.
