      June 9, 2017

Hottest team: Nationals (13-4 last 17) vs. Rangers

Washington is a tired squad, coming off a three-city California trip in which it finished 7-2, followed by beating Baltimore in a make-up game on Thursday. The Nationals have built an impressive 11 ½-game edge in the National League East as no other team in the division is even close to the .500 mark.

The Nats have won five straight series openers as they welcome in the Rangers for an interleague series this weekend. Tanner Roark looks to extend that streak as the right-hander hits the hill for Washington. Roark has won three consecutive starts, while tossing at least seven innings in each of those appearances. Both the Nationals and Rangers have performed well in interleague play this season as Washington owns a 6-2 record, while Texas is 7-2 against National League competition.

Coldest team: Cardinals (0-7 last seven) vs. Phillies

The good news for St. Louis is it faces the team with the worst record in baseball when Philadelphia invades Busch Stadium. The bad news is the Cardinals have gone completely backwards of late by getting swept in consecutive road series by the Cubs and Reds. The Cardinals have dropped 12 of their past 15 games overall, while posting an 0-8 record in their last eight series openers.

Hottest pitcher: Matt Shoemaker, Angels (5-3, 4.12 ERA)

Since losing to the Astros at home last month, Shoemaker has been dealing by posting a solid 4-1 record in his last five starts. Shoemaker has put together two scoreless performances in wins over the Tigers and Rays, while scattering five hits in 6.1 innings of work in a 7-2 victory over the Twins his last time out. The right-hander is winless in his last five starts against the Astros since last season, but four of those outings were quality appearances.

Coldest pitcher: Amir Garrett, Reds (3-4, 7.17 ERA)

The Cincinnati southpaw was one of the top surprises in baseball by picking up road underdog victories over the Pirates and Cardinals. Garrett followed up those two wins by striking out 12 in seven innings against the Orioles, but lost a 2-0 decision at home. Garrett has not been sharp recently by allowing 21 earned runs in his 11.1 innings, while the Reds are 0-3 in those three outings. The Reds look to extend their winning streak to five games when they head out west to face the Dodgers, who have lost five of their past eight contests.

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (6-2 last eight)

Arizona improved to 24-8 at Chase Field this season after whipping San Diego on Thursday, 15-3. The D-backs plated 32 runs in the three-game sweep of the Padres, while eclipsing the OVER in all three victories. Arizona has scored at least five runs in nine straight home contests as Milwaukee heads to the desert this weekend. Randall Delgado makes his fourth start of the season for Arizona, coming off three outings in which he gave up one earned run each time.

Biggest UNDER run: Dodgers (7-1 last eight)

Los Angeles and Washington played to three pitcher’s duels this week as the winning team plated two runs only once. The final two games were exact 2-1 scores with each team winning by that count, capped off by Clayton Kershaw outdueling Stephen Strasburg on Wednesday. For the exception of a huge ninth inning rally at Milwaukee last Saturday in which the Dodgers ended with 10 runs, L.A. has scored two runs or less in seven of the past eight games. Rich Hill takes the mound for the Dodgers against the Reds as the southpaw has finished UNDER the total in five of six starts this season.

Matchup to watch: Orioles vs. Yankees

Baltimore ran out of gas following a pair of massive comebacks in extra-inning wins over Pittsburgh earlier this week as the Orioles were drubbed by the Nationals, 6-1 in a make-up game on Thursday. The Orioles look to rebound by starting a crucial three-game series with the division-leading Yankees in the Bronx.

The home team has captured the first three series between these AL East rivals, as the Orioles took two of three from the Yankees in their last matchup in late May. Dylan Bundy heads to the mound for Baltimore in the series opener, as the O’s have slumped to a 1-4 record in his last five starts. The only victory in this span came against the Yankees at Camden Yards on May 29 in a 3-2 triumph as the right-hander allowed two earned runs in seven innings of work.

The Yankees pummeled the Red Sox in the final two games of their series in the Bronx, capped off by a 9-1 rout on Thursday. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery looks to keep New York atop the AL East as he posted six scoreless innings in a 7-0 shutout of Toronto his last time out. However, New York is 0-4 in his previous four starts as a favorite, while the Yankees are 0-3 in his past three home outings.

Betcha didn’t know: Matt Harvey has been flipped to a road favorite as the Mets visit the Braves. However, Atlanta has been unkind to the Mets’ right-hander by beating New York in each of his last two starts, while scoring 12 runs on Harvey in 9.2 innings. Harvey’s counterpart, Julio Teheran, is 1-2 against the Mets this season and is winless in his last three home starts against New York.

Biggest public favorite: Astros (-190) vs. Angels

Biggest public underdog: Braves (+105) vs. Mets

Biggest line move: Yankees (-115 to -140) vs. Orioles

      • LEADING OFF: Russell's 'serious allegation,' Pedroia returns
        June 9, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

        RUSSELL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ALLEGATIONS

It's unclear when All-Star shortstop Addison Russell will return to the Chicago Cubs amid domestic violence allegations. His wife, Melisa, posted a photo Wednesday on Instagram with a caption suggesting he was unfaithful to her. In another post, a user named (at)carlierreed - described by Melisa as a close friend - accused Russell of ''mentally and physically abusing her.'' The posts have been deleted.

The Cubs told Russell not to come to the ballpark Thursday for a game against the Rockies. Russell issued a statement saying the allegations were ''false and hurtful,'' while Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein called it ''a very serious allegation'' and ''something we had to deal with immediately.'' Epstein was not sure when Russell will rejoin the team, although the shortstop is not suspended.

        READY TO GO

Second baseman Dustin Pedroia is expected to come off the disabled list and return to the lineup when Boston opens a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park. Pedroia has been sidelined since May 30 with a sprained left wrist. The four-time All-Star and 2008 AL MVP is batting .292 with two homers and 21 RBIs. Left-hander Brian Johnson will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to start for the Red Sox, his first major league appearance since a five-hit shutout May 27 against Seattle.

        DL FOR DALLAS

Houston hopes to learn more about Dallas Keuchel's status after the ace went on the disabled list Thursday with neck discomfort. Keuchel returned to Houston to be examined after being scratched from a start Wednesday with what the Astros initially called an illness. The left-hander is 9-0 with a 1.67 ERA in 11 starts for the Astros, who have the best record in the major leagues.

        STRUGGLING ACE

Julio Teheran was expected to lead Atlanta's rotation, but his 5.40 ERA is almost two runs higher than his 3.54 career average as he prepares to face Matt Harvey and the New York Mets. Teheran has struggled to adjust to the Braves' new SunTrust Park, where he is 1-4 with an 8.40 ERA in six starts. He is 4-0 with a 2.95 ERA in six road starts. Teheran (5-4) has won two straight but allowed a combined 10 runs in the two games, including seven runs in five innings in a 13-8 win at Cincinnati on Sunday.

        BACK AT IT

Twins right-hander Ervin Santana tries to rebound against San Francisco following his worst start of the season. Santana (7-3, 2.44) allowed seven runs in four innings in a game against the Angels last time out. Giants left-hander Matt Moore (2-6, 5.22) gave up five runs in four innings in his previous outing against Philadelphia.

CHICAGO (AP) Rockies closer Greg Holland walked the bases loaded in the ninth inning before escaping, and Colorado held off the Chicago Cubs 5-3 Friday for their season-high sixth win in a row.

After three straight one-out walks, Holland retired Ben Zobrist on a short flyball and struck out Jason Heyward for his major league-best 23rd save. The Rockies posted their NL-leading 40th win this season and have their longest winning streak since 2014.

Chris Rusin (3-0) won in relief. Seth Frankoff (0-1) lost in his major league debut.

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell returned to the team a day after the club told him not to come to Wrigley Field while Major League Baseball investigates a domestic abuse claim. Russell, who didn't play, had been accused of hitting his wife in a social media post that has since been deleted. Russell denied the allegation.

            BRAVES 3, METS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Dansby Swanson turned a normal grounder up the middle into a hustle double, then dashed home on a single by pinch-hitter Rio Ruiz in the ninth inning to lift Atlanta over New York.

With one out in the ninth, Swanson hit a bouncer through the infield and ran hard out of the batter's box. As center fielder Curtis Granderson took a casual approach to the ball, Swanson never let up as he rounded first base and slid head-first into second.

Josh Edgin then relieved Fernando Salas (0-2), and Ruiz followed with a single to left. Swanson skipped out of the way of the ball, sped home and slid in safely.

Jim Johnson (4-1) pitched a scoreless ninth.

            MARLINS 12, PIRATES 7

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton smashed a home run over the batter's eye at PNC Park, Tyler Moore went deep twice as Miami pounded reeling Pittsburgh.

Stanton's shot cleared the massive green wall beyond center field and was estimated at 449 feet by Statcast.

Moore hit a two-run homer off Tyler Glasnow (2-6) in the second and took reliever Dovydas Neverauskas deep over the left field wall in the seventh.

Dustin McGowan (4-0) won in relief. The Marlins have won 11 of 15, the Pirates have lost four straight to drop into last in the NL Central.

            RANGERS 5, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Andrew Cashner quieted the National League's top-hitting lineup, Jonathan Lucroy and Rougned Odor homered, and Texas topped Washington.

The Rangers advantage of three errors and won for just the fourth time in 15 games.

Cashner (3-5) allowed one run and six hits in seven innings. Matt Bush got two outs for his seventh save. Tanner Roark (6-3) lost on his own bobblehead night.

            CARDINALS 3, PHILLIES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Aledmys Diaz hit a solo home run and Michael Wacha pitched six strong innings as St. Louis snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Earlier in the day, the Cardinals reassigned some members of the coaching staff and released veteran infielder Jhonny Peralta.

Philadelphia lost its third straight game.

Seung Hwan Oh pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 16 chances. Left fielder Tommy Pham made a diving catch on a line drive by Freddy Galvis to end the game, stranding a runner at third.

Wacha (3-3) allowed two runs. Jeremy Hellickson (5-4) took the loss.

            YANKEES 8, ORIOLES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Aaron Hicks homered twice and rookie Jordan Montgomery pitched seven stellar innings to lead New York over Baltimore.

Starlin Castro also connected for the AL East leaders, who won their third straight. The Yankees have outscored rivals Boston and Baltimore 25-3 over the last three nights.

Montgomery (4-4) set a career high with eight strikeouts in the longest outing of his 11 major league starts. He was coming off six innings of three-hit ball in a 7-0 win at Toronto.

Dylan Bundy (6-5) tossed six solid innings but lost for the fourth time in his past five starts.

            RED SOX 5, TIGERS 3

BOSTON (AP) - Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Boston over Detroit.

The Red Sox rallied for three runs in the inning, capped by Bradley's two-out shot off Alex Wilson (1-3).

Matt Barnes (4-2) pitched one inning and Craig Kimbrel picked up his 18th save. The Tigers have lost three straight.

            ANGELS 9, ASTROS 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Cameron Maybin starred in his return from the disabled list, finishing with three hits and a career-high four steals to help Los Angeles beat Houston.

Maybin missed nine games with an oblique injury. He doubled, had two infield singles and scored four times while moving into first place in the American League with 17 steals.

Matt Shoemaker (6-3) pitched seven solid innings. Houston starter Brad Peacock (3-1) allowed a season-high seven hits in just three innings.

            INDIANS 7, WHITE SOX 3

CLEVELAND (AP) - Edwin Encarnacion hit a go-ahead, two-run homer and Corey Kluber won his second straight start since coming off the disabled list as Cleveland beat Chicago.

            Encarnacion had three hits.

The 30,047 fans at Progressive Field divided their attention with Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors that took place across the street.

Chicago slugger Jose Abreu left in the seventh inning after being hit on the left leg by Andrew Miller's pitch. Abreu fell to the ground and couldn't put any weight on his leg while being helped to the dugout. Chicago said he has a bruised leg and will be re-evaluated Saturday.

Kluber (5-2) allowed three runs in six innings. Miguel Gonzalez (4-7) took the loss.

            RAYS 13, ATHLETICS 4

ST. PETERBURG, Fla. (AP) - Tampa Bay tied a season-high with five home runs and Alex Cobb went six strong innings in a win over Oakland.

Steven Souza Jr., Mallex Smith, Logan Morrison, Tim Beckham and Corey Dickerson all homered for the Rays.

Cobb (5-5), coming off a start Saturday at Seattle in which he allowed nine runs and 14 hits over five innings, gave up one run and four hits.

Andrew Triggs (5-6) struggled for the fourth consecutive start.

            TWINS 4, GIANTS 0

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Ervin Santana pitched a four-hitter for his third shutout of the season and hit a three-run double in another stellar bounce-back start, leading the Twins to a victory over the Giants.

Santana (8-3) recovered from a seven-run shelling last Saturday against the Angels to shut down the Giants in an efficient 91-pitch outing. He struck out five, walked one and started 26 of the 31 batters he faced with first-pitch strikes.

Santana has allowed at least five runs in three starts this season and followed all of them with scoreless outings, including two game shutouts.

Matt Moore (2-7) allowed four runs in six innings to extend his winless streak to five starts. The Giants have lost eight of 11 overall and have just three wins in Moore's 13 starts this season.

            BREWERS 8, DIAMONDBACKS 6

PHOENIX (AP) - Manny Pina had three hits - two doubles - and two RBIs and the Brewers ended Arizona's nine-game home win streak with a victory over the Diamondbacks.

Jake Lamb hit a three-run homer for the Diamondbacks, losers at home for only the ninth time in 33 games this season. David Peralta added three hits and an RBI.

Brewers second baseman Jonathan Villar was taken off the field on a cart with an injury after making a diving stop in short right field to rob Chris Herrmann in the eighth inning and then fell down in obvious pain.

Hernan Perez homered for the Brewers and Orlando Arcia had three singles and a sacrifice fly.

With the game tied 4-4, Brett Phillips led off the Milwaukee sixth with a single and Arcia reached on a bunt. Pinch-hitter Jesus Aguilar followed with a sharp double into the left field corner off reliever T.J. McFarland (3-1) to bring home Phillips. Arcia scored on left fielder Daniel Descalso's error, putting the Brewers up 6-4.

            DODGERS 7, REDS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Justin Turner hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat off the disabled list, Enrique Hernandez added a solo shot and Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda combined on a five-hitter to lead the Dodgers to a victory over the Reds.

Reds starting pitcher Amir Garrett (3-5) left the game in the second inning after taking a hot comebacker off his bare left hand.

Hill (3-2) started and went five innings for the Dodgers, holding the Reds to one run on two hits. He walked three and struck out five.

Making his first relief appearance since his 2008 rookie season in Japan, Maeda threw the final four innings to earn the save. He gave up three hits, including a ninth-inning solo home run to Joey Votto, while striking out six.

            MARINERS 4, BLUE JAYS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Danny Valencia and Jarrod Dyson had RBI singles as part of Seattle's seventh-inning rally, and the Mariners beat the Blue Jays for their 10th win in 12 games.

Struggling to get anything started all night against Toronto starter Joe Biagini (1-5), the Mariners rallied with two runs in the seventh and managed to silence the thousands of Blue Jays fans who made the trip south from the provinces of western Canada for the weekend series.

Valencia's single scored Robinson Cano with the tying run, and Dyson followed with a liner to center scoring Kyle Seager and giving Seattle a 3-2 lead. Seager added a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning.

Tyler Cloyd (1-0) pitched one inning of relief to get the victory in his first appearance in the majors since Sept. 29, 2013. The combo of Nick Vincent and Edwin Diaz worked the eighth and ninth innings as Seattle reached .500 for the third time this season.

            PADRES 6, ROYALS 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Pinch-hitter Matt Szczur hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning and the Padres beat the Royals to snap a five-game losing streak.

Szczur was pinch-hitting for starter Jhoulys Chacin (5-5), who had given up a tying two-run homer to Salvador Perez in the fifth.

Szczur's second homer came off rookie lefty Matt Strahm (1-3) and gave San Diego a 3-2 lead.

Rookie Franchy Cordero hit a two-run double in the eighth off reliever Chris Young, a former Padres starter, and Yangervis Solarte followed with an RBI single.

            • Weekend Outlook
              June 9, 2017

              Toronto (29-31) at Seattle (30-31)
Scheduled rotation:: Biagini (1-4) vs. Gaviglio (2-1), Stroman (6-2) vs. Miranda (6-2), Happ (0-4) vs. Paxton (5-0)
Series Price: Mariners -150, Blue Jays +120

Look out Houston, there's a new player in the AL West. Okay, so the Mariners are still 13 games out and one game under .500 but they're finally playing to their abilities and expectations many had before the season started. Seattle was 25-to-1 to win the World Series at the Westgate SuperBook in March and now they're 80-to-1. Maybe now is the time to jump on board futures with some value. Teams that pop up with great play in the summer sometimes get forgotten by the Las Vegas sports books, many of whom adjust weekly as a routine -- as in each Monday -- rather than daily.

The Mariners have won nine of their last 11 games while batting .313 and their bullpen has been in lock down mode over that span with a 1.47 ERA. This weekend, Seattle has some major payback on their mind since being swept in a four game series at Toronto four weeks ago. The M's scored only six runs combined with the Jays starters looking playoff ready. However, they didn't face James Paxton who the Jays will get a look at Sunday.

Toronto has won only three times in its last 10 meetings at Safeco Field and the Over has happened in eight of the last 11 meetings in Seattle. I'm looking for Seattle to win Friday and especially Sunday, which means I like them to win the series laying the -150 at Station Casinos books..

Baltimore (31-27) at NY Yankees (34-23)
Scheduled rotation:: Bundy (6-4) vs. Montgomery (3-4), Tillman (1-3) vs. Severino (4-2), Gausman (3-4) vs. Tanaka (5-6)
Series Price: Yankees -175, Orioles +145

The first-place Yankees have a 3.5 game lead over the Orioles in the super-competitive AL East where the worst record in the division is Toronto at 29-31. Baltimore would be in first if they could manage to win some games on the road. Their 10-17 road record is second-worst in the American League behind Kansas City (9-17). The O's are currently on a miserable 1-10 road run. What's crazy is that the O's score 4.7 runs on the road, more than what they average at home. However, their pitchers on the road allow batters to .286 and score 5.3 runs a game.

This will be the 10th meeting between these clubs with the O's holding a 5-4 edge. However, only three game were played Yankee Stadium and the Yankees won that series 2-1 in late April. Eight of the nine games went Over the total.

Something interesting to note for the greedy baseball bettors who bet the run-line daily is that the Yankees at up +21.15 units if betting them on the run-line every game. I don't recommend that wager, but the bats of the Yankees get them runs quickly and that bet is cashing often. Only Houston (+1.8) has a larger margin of victory than the Yankees +1.5.

              Milwaukee (32-29) at Arizona (37-25)
Scheduled rotation:: Davies (6-3) vs. Delgado (1-1), Guerra (1-0) vs. Godley (1-1), Anderson (5-1) vs. Ray (6-3)
Series Price: Diamondbacks -185, Brewers +155

The first-place Brewers head to Arizona to face the toughest home team in baseball. The Diamondbacks have gone 24-8 at Chase Field and just come off a three-game sweep of the Padres to kick off a short six-game home stand. They're up +15.7 units at home this season while averaging 6.5 runs a game and batting .296. Those type of figures have helped 21 of their 32 home games get Over the total. Chase Anderson vs. Robbie Ray on Sunday is going to be some kind of match-up and should be the only Under of the series.

Cincinnati (29-30) at LA Dodgers (36-25)
Scheduled rotation:: Garrett (3-4) vs. Hill (2-2), Wojciechowski (1-0) vs. Wood (6-0), Adleman (4-2) vs. Ryu (2-6)
Series Price: Dodgers -300, Reds +250

This is a chunky series price when the Dodgers don't have Clayton Kershaw pitching. However, the Dodgers are 37-15 in their last 52 home games and have won 11 of the last 13 meetings with the Reds. The one area where you could argue for the Reds to steal two games and win the series is that the Dodgers are batting .189 in their last 10 games.

Minnesota (30-26) at San Francisco (25-37)
Scheduled rotation:: Santana (7-3) vs. Moore (2-6), Berrios (4-1) vs. Samardzija (2-7), TBD vs. Cain (3-5)
Series Price: Giants -150, Twins +130

Hey Minnesota, it's the second week in June...what the heck are guys still doing atop the AL Central? Experts had you guys pegged for last-place in a division that was supposed to come down to the Indians and Tigers. But here you are in first-place heading to San Francisco to face the anemic offense of the Giants. Sports Books in Las Vegas certainly are starting to believe as odds to win the World Series have dropped over the past few weeks from 100-to-1 down to 60-to-1.

I'm looking at the Giants being -150 to win the series and trying to figure out why. They score only 3.2 runs a game at home while the Twins have gone 18-8 on the road. Take the Twins to take two of three here and win the series.

              • Saturday’s six-pack

Phil Steele’s top six 2018 draft-eligible QB’s in college football this season:

                6) JT Barrett, Ohio State

                5) Lamar Jackson, Louisville

                4) Josh Allen, Wyoming

                3) Mason Rudolph, Oklahoma State

                2) Josh Rosen, UCLA

                1) Sam Darnold, USC

                ********************************

                Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

                13) If you don’t think Lebron James is one of the three most valuable players in the NBA, think again. He sat out the last 1:49 of the first quarter in Game 3— Golden State went on a 10-0 run, turning a 7-point deficit into a 3-point lead. Warriors won the game by 5.

If a team can’t survive its star sitting out two freakin’ minutes, he is a very valuable player.

                12) Utah Valley State’s basketball team is coached by Mark Pope, who played for Kentucky for two years- he was on a national title team as a senior. His Wolverines open this season Nov 11 in Rupp Arena against Kentucky, then the next day, they play Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Utah Valley will start the season 0-2, with two very healthy paychecks and probably a lot of publicity for masochistic scheduling. They should also take a lot of pictures for the cover of their media guide- playing Duke/Kentucky should help their recruiting, long-term.

                11) Cam Johnson finally got his release to transfer from Pittsburgh and will play basketball for ACC rival North Carolina as a graduate transfer this coming season.

                10) Ohio State’s search for a basketball coach is on-going; there were rumors they offered the job to Creighton’s Greg McDermott, but turned the job down. Butler’s Chris Holtmann is the latest name in the rumor mill.

                9) Western Kentucky had the #9 recruiting class in America this year, which is very surprising; they play in Conference USA- their games with Middle Tennessee should be fun this winter.

                8) Eric Sogard hit .239 in 1,210 AB’s over six years with the A’s; thats a pretty big sample size. Now he is on the Milwaukee Brewers, batting leadoff and he is hitting .404. WTF?

Sogard played college ball at Arizona State; his coach was Pat Murphy, who is now the bench coach for the Brewers (Milwaukee manager Counsell played for Murphy at Notre Dame). Is it that simple, that playing for someone who has confidence in you can improve your performance this much?

                7) Dallas Keuchel (neck) goes back on the DL, with no timetable for a return, which is ominous. Astros’ pitching is not at all deep.

                6) St Louis Cardinals are 6-14 this season in games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

                5) Since 2013, alums of these schools have won the most money on the PGA Tour:
                5) Oklahoma State $46M
                4) Georgia Tech $47.2M
                3) Arizona State $50.1M
                2) UNLV $50.6M
                1) Georgia $85.4M

                4) Ohio State named Chris Holtmann basketball coach; he went 70-31 in three years at Butler, 34-20 in Big East play. Other than $$$, I’m not sure Ohio State is a better job than Butler, so I’ll be curious to see who the Bulldogs replace Holtmann with.

                3) 3-on-3 basketball will be a sport in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo; how they going to decide who plays in that?

                2) Thursday night, Robinson Cano called the batboy out during his at-bat and changed batting gloves; never saw that before. Then he got a hit. You can’t change bats during an at-bat unless the bat gets broken.

                1) MSNBC is showing a movie on June 17th, which is unusual; All the President’s Men. I’m sure it is just a coincidence- it is the 45th anniversary of the break-in at the Watergate Hotel after all, but still, not like they’re trying to plant a seed in anyone’s mind or anything…….

                    • LEADING OFF: A's-Rays in MLB's 1st set twinbill since 2011
                      June 9, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Saturday:

                      LET'S PLAY TWO

The Tampa Bay Rays host Oakland in the first scheduled doubleheader in the big leagues since July 16, 2011, when the Angels visited the A's. The 2:10 p.m. EDT start will mark the second doubleheader ever at the domed Tropicana Field - the other was Sept. 30, 2004, when the Rays and Detroit Tigers made up two games postponed four weeks earlier because of Hurricane Frances.

                      NOT SO ROCKY

Colorado goes for its seventh straight win when it plays at Wrigley Field. The Rockies lead the National League with 40 victories and have their best win streak since 2014. Jeff Hoffman (3-0, 2.61 ERA) starts for Colorado vs. Cubs righty Eddie Butler (3-1, 3.75), who was a first-round draft pick by the Rockies in 2012 and went 6-16 in three seasons with them.

                      GETTING HEALTHY

For a change, the injury news is good for the New York Mets, who are ready to clear three players off the disabled list. Slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is expected to come off the DL and start one game in a day-night doubleheader at Atlanta. Also, lefty Steven Matz is set to be activated and make his season debut in the twinbill. And, right-hander Seth Lugo will start Sunday as he returns from elbow trouble.

                      SALE STREAK

Red Sox ace Chris Sale leads the majors in strikeouts and has won six straight decisions. The lefty will try to boost both numbers when he starts at Fenway Park against Detroit star Justin Verlander.

                      KEEP TRYING

Royals righty Ian Kennedy is 0-6 and winless in 14 starts dating to last Sept. 11. He'll pitch at Petco Park, a familiar spot because he played for the Padres from 2013-15. Miguel Diaz goes for San Diego, making his first major league start.

                      • MLB notebook: Rays' Kiermaier (hip) out two months
                        June 9, 2017

Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier will miss at least two months due to a hairline fracture in his right hip, manager Kevin Cash told MLB Network Radio on Friday.

Kiermaier was hurt while sliding awkwardly into first base during Tampa Bay's win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.

"He's going to be out a while," Cash said. "He's going to go on the DL. He's got a hairline fracture in his hip region. He's going to at minimum be shut down six to eight weeks."

Kiermaier was trying to beat out an infield hit when he made the decision to dive.

--All-Star shortstop Addison Russell rejoined the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field after the team told him to take off Thursday's game against Colorado in the wake of domestic violence allegations against his wife.

Russell spoke to media in the clubhouse before the game against the Rockies about baseball matters only. The 23-year-old said he wanted to focus on what got him to the majors, "being good."

Russell was accused of "mental and physical" abuse against his wife, Melisa, by someone claiming to be a family friend in an Instagram posting on a now-removed account.

--The New York Yankees will push back the next start of struggling right-hander Masahiro Tanaka to Monday, manager Joe Girardi announced.

Tanaka, 28, will start in a road game against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night instead of starting Sunday afternoon at home against the Baltimore Orioles.

Tanaka gave up seven runs over 5 2/3 innings in his last start against the Orioles on May 31. He is 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA in two starts against the Orioles this season.

--The St. Louis Cardinals designated infielder Jhonny Peralta for assignment after suffering through an 0-7 road trip.

Peralta has been relegated to backup duty with shortstop Aledmys Diaz and third baseman Jedd Gyorko firmly in control of their starting positions on the left side of the infield. Peralta was batting .204 with no homers or RBIs in 54 at-bats this season. Last season, he hit .260 with eight homers in 82 games for the Cardinals.

Peralta is in the final season of a four-year, $52 million contract.

--Yankory Pimentel, a pitcher in the Red Sox's minor league system, received an 80-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reported.

Pimentel had a positive test result for Stanozolol, according to the report.

The right-hander began the season with Class A-Advanced Salem, where he was 2-1 with a 1.54 ERA, and was promoted to Double-A Portland, where he was 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA in four appearances.

Hottest team: Rockies (6-0 past six games, 17-8 past 25 overall)

The Rockies topped the defending champion Cubs again on Friday at Wrigley Field, 5-3. So far Colorado is 2-for-2 in Chitown, outscoring the Cubs 9-4 while already hanging an 'L' on Jon Lester. Now, Colorado will face former Rockies pitcher Eddie Butler with the wind gusting out to straightaway center field at 18-22 mph. The Rockies have won four in a row on the road, while going 19-7 in their past 26 games against a right-handed starter. Meanwhile, the Cubbies have dropped right straight against National League West teams while going 1-7 in their past eight against teams with a winning percentage over .600. Colorado has won five of the past six in this series, and four of their past five outings at the Friendly Confines.

Coldest team Pirates (0-4 past four games, 5-15 past 20 overall)

The Pirates haven't had a lot of luck in the first two games in their series with the Marlins, as Miami has come to the Steel City and outscored the Bucs 19-8 so far. That includes a 7-1 win in the series opener against ace Gerrit Coles. Trevor Williams has been a solid option for the Pirates lately, as the Bucs are 4-1 over their past five starts. He'll need to keep pitching well with the Marlins going 8-2 over their past 10 meetings with the Pirates, including 4-0 in their past four trips to Pittsburgh. The Marlins are just 3-9 over their past 12 road games vs. RHP.

Hottest pitcher: Gio Gonzalez, Nationals (5-1, 3.03 ERA)

Gonzalez will host the Rangers in Saturday's matinee game in D.C. He hasn't lost since May 8 in Baltimore, and he is unbeaten at home over six starts. Gonzalez has won just once at Nationals Park, but he has a sparkling 1.69 ERA with a .220 opponent batting average and 36 strikeouts over 37 1/3 innings. He has been at his best during day baseball, too, going 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA over six day starts, striking out 33 over 38 1/3 innings while limiting the opposition to a .212 batting average. While the Nationals are just 1-4 over Gonzalez's past five interleague starts, they're 9-4 over his past 13 at home.

Coldest pitcher: Josh Tomlin, Indians (3-7, 5.54 ERA)

Tomlin lost just nine games in 2016, but he has dropped seven of his 10 decisions already this season and his 5.54 ERA would be the second worst of his career outside of 2012 when he had a 6.36 ERA. He has started to show some signs of improvement, posting back-to-back quality starts, but we've seen that movie before. He had back-to-back impressive quality starts from May 6-12 before getting bombed by the Rays for six runs, seven hits and two walks in just 2 1/3 innings back on May 17. He hasn't been able to piece together three quality starts at any point this season. The Indians are just 2-5 in Tomlin's past seven home starts, and 1-4 over his past five assignments overall.

Biggest UNDER run: Dodgers (7-2 past nine games overall)

The 'under' has been a frequent occurence lately, as the Los Angeles offense has experienced a power outage. L.A. is good for two or fewer runs in four of their past five, and seven of their past nine outings. It was a rare 'over' in Friday's series opener against Cincinnati, albeirt just barely. With a total of 8 1/2 the Dodgers were able to cobble together seven runs, but it was the Reds posting one run in the top of the ninth inning to serve 'under' bettors a bad beat. The Dodgers send LHP Alex Wood to the hill on Saturday. Cincinnati has seen the 'under' go 8-2-1 in their past 11 road games against a left-handed starter, while the 'under is 6-1 in Alex Wood's past seven against NL Central foes.

Biggest OVER run: Diamondbacks (5-0 past five games overall)

The Diamondbacks offense has picked up the pace over the past few games, averaging 9.5 runs over the past four outings. They have allowed 4.8 runs per game over the past five outings, so it's no surprise the 'over' has been on a roll. The 'over' is also 5-1 in Arizona's past six against a right-handed starter while going 49-21-3 over their past 73 games at Chase Field. The over is in good shape with Zack Godley on the hill, too. The total has gone over in six of his past seven starts at home while going 9-3 in his past 12 outings overall. The Brewers have been playing along, too, with the over going 4-1 in their past five road games against a team with a winning overall mark, and 6-2-1 in their past nine road outings against a team with a home winning percentage over .600.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks vs. Brewers

The Brewers send Junior Guerra to the hill trying to stay hot. Milwaukee won the series opener on Friday by an 8-6 count, and they have won three of the past four overall. However, the Brewers haven't won three or more in a row since a four-game run from May 16-19. While Milwaukee is 0-4 over Guerra's past four starts against NL West foes, they have won each of his past four outings while going 4-1 over his past five road assignments against a team with a winning overall mark. The Brewers snapped a four-game losing streak in the desert with their win Friday. Godley has posted a 1-0 record with a 0.73 ERA in two starts and a relief appearance in his career against the Brew Crew.

Betcha didn’t know: The Blue Jays have loved Marcus Stroman's performance on the road so far this season. He is 4-0 with a 3.34 ERA in five road outings this season. He also struck out nine batters over six innings in a no-decision in his first meeting with Seattle back on May 13, allowing two runs with eight hits. It will be a tough assignment, though, as southpaw Angel Miranda has been tough. He has won three straight victories, pairing with James Paxton to give the Mariners some much needed solid pitching. He also met Stroman in his first start against the Jays on May 13, allowing one run and three hits with eight punchouts over five frames.

Biggest public favorite: Dodgers (-240) vs. Reds

Biggest public underdog: Twins (+155) at Giants

Biggest line move: Giants (-120 to -155) vs. Twins
