    • Thursday's Diamond Notes
      May 25, 2017

Hottest team: Dodgers (5-2 past seven games, 12-4 past 16 at home)

The Dodgers ran into a buzzsaw on Wednesday night, falling to a red-hot Mike Leake and the Cardinals by a 6-1 margin. It was a rare home loss for L.A., as Dodger Blue had been successful in 12 of their past 15 at Chavez Ravine entering play. You can also blame left-hander Rich Hill, too, as the Dodgers have lost each of his past three starts. It might be a difficult story with Kenta Maeda on the hill, as the Dodgers are 5-1 over his past six outing and 9-3 in his past 12 at home. In addition, the Dodgers have won 46 of their past 61 home games vs. RHP while going 4-0 in their past four at Dodger Stadium against teams with a winning overall mark.

Coldest team Padres (2-6 past eight games, 5-15 past 20 overall)

The Padres came up with a rare road victory, topping the Mets 6-5 on Wednesday behind Jarred Cosart. The wins have been few and far between for San Diego starting pitchers, and the team has won more than once only with Trevor Cahill on the mound so far in May. The team has just one or fewer victories for all other starters in the month. The team turns to minor-league call-up Dinelson Lamet to try and turn the team's fortunes around. Lamet, signed as a international free agent in 2014, posted a 3-2 record with a 3.23 ERA across 39 innings over eight starts with Triple-A El Paso.

      Hottest pitcher:
Ivan Nova, Pirates (4-3, 2.63 ERA)

Nova takes the mound on Thursday afternoon against the Braves at SunTrust Park. He has shined when the sun is out, posting a 3-1 record with a 3.06 ERA in five appearances during the day, recording 23 strikeouts with just two walks over 32 1/3 innings. His overall success can be attributed to the fact he has a 1.05 WHIP thanks to just four walks and five homers allowed in 61 2/3 innings over nine starts. His only appearance of the season against the Braves occurred earlier this season in the Steel City and he allowed just one unearned run, six hits and no walks with four strikeouts over six innings in a win back on April 7.

Coldest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (5-3, 6.56 ERA)

Tanaka has racked up a respectable 5-3 win-loss record so far, but he has a terrible 6.56 ERA with a .310 opponent batting average and 1.60 WHIP through nine starts. He ranks fourth in the majors with a run support mark of 6.22, one of three Yankees starters ranking in the Top 10 in the majors in run support. The Yankees are 7-0 in Tanaka's past seven starts against American League Central Division foes and 22-8 in his past 30 starts at home. He could break out of his funk against a struggling Royals team, especially one which is 36-76 in their past 112 tries against the Yankees and 16-41 in their past 57 trips to the Bronx.

Biggest UNDER run: Royals (5-2 past seven games, 15-8 past 23 overall)

The Royals have had difficulty scoring all season, as they rank dead last in the majors with just 153 runs through 45 games (3.4 runs per game). That's 50 runs below the American League average, and 53 under the average for the majors. It's also a stark contrast to their opponent, as the Yankees rank third in the majors with 238 runs while checking in second in the league, and first in the AL, with an .801 team OPS. The 'under' is 19-7-2 in Kansas City's past 28 against teams with a winning overall record, 25-12 in their past 37 overall and 9-2-1 in their past 12 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600.

Biggest OVER run: Brewers (5-0 past five games, 5-0 past five road games)

The 'over' trends are overwhelmingly pointed in Milwaukee's direction. The over has cashed in 16 of the past 21 for Milwaukee at Miller Park while going 23-9-1 in their past 33 games overall. In addition, the over is 6-1 in their past seven against left-handed starting pitching and 13-3 in Zach Davies' past 16 starts at home. The over is also 4-0 in the past four home starts for Davies against a team wit ha winning record. Milwaukee ranks fourth in the majors with 236 runs per game (5.24 runs per game) while also posting a dismal 4.24 ERA, 17th in the majors.

Matchup to watch: Astros vs. Tigers

The Tigers turn to their ace Justin Verlander to slap the brakes on their current slide. The Tigers have won just once over the past five road games while going 1-4 in their past five overall and 1-4 in their past five against a right-handed starter. However, J.V. has been the team's stopper, going 20-8 over the past 28 against teams with a winning overall record and 7-3 in his past 10 starts with four days of rest. The Astros have been on fire, winning 27 of their past 38 overall, including an 11-5 mark in the past 16 at home. However, they're just 1-4 in their past five times facing Verlander. In addition, Mike Fiers has a dismal 5.14 ERA with a .326 opponent OBP through 42 innings.

Betcha didn’t know: Arizona finds themselves with a 29-19 record, sitting 10 games over .500 for the first time since the 2011 season when they rolled to 94 victories. If the playoffs started today, both the Brewers and Diamondbacks would qualify for the postseason. How many people had that in their predictions when the season began? The Snakes have rattled off seven wins over their past eight outings, although they're just 1-4 over Robbie Ray's past five outings. They're also 2-9 over his past 11 road outings against teams with a winning overall mark. Meanwhile, the Brewers have won each of Davies' past six starts, but they're just 2-6 in his past eight against teams with a winning overall record.

Biggest public favorite: Mets (-210) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+120) at Astros

Biggest line move: Padres (+235 to +210) at Mets

        • New York City mayor still won't cheer for hometown Yankees
          May 25, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) He has served a full-term as New York City mayor, but Bill de Blasio has never attended a New York Yankees game during his tenure. And he doesn't plan to break the streak now.

The Democratic mayor grew up outside Boston and is a fan of the Yankees' rival Boston Red Sox.

During events in the Bronx this week, the mayor was asked if he planned to attend a Yankees game in the Bronx at any point in the future. The New York Post reports (http://nyp.st/2rjV4fJ ) de Blasio gave a one-word answer: no.

Bronx Republican Chairman Michael Rendino says the mayor's refusal to attend a home game is one more reason he's endorsing Republican mayoral candidate Paul Massey. Democratic state Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., of the Bronx, says de Blasio is insulting Bronx residents.

MILWAUKEE (AP) Robbie Ray pitched seven innings of two-hit ball to lower the NL's second-best road ERA to 0.57, Gregor Blanco and Chris Owings homered, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 Thursday night for their ninth win in 10 games.

Ray (4-3), coming off a dominating performance against San Diego in his last start, did not allow a run for the second straight outing. He struck out nine and walked none to send the Brewers to their season-worst fourth straight loss.

Arizona is 11 games above .500 for the first time since 2011.

Blanco, who went 3 for 4, hit the second pitch of the game off Milwaukee starter Zach Davies (5-3) for his fourth career leadoff home run. Owings tied his career high with his sixth of the season leading off the second. David Peralta had an RBI double in the third and Paul Goldschmidt scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.

              CUBS 5, GIANTS 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Kris Bryant, Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist hit solo homers, and Chicago won its third straight.

Spot starter Eddie Butler (2-0) allowed one run and four hits in five innings, and Mike Montgomery pitched one-hit ball over four innings for his first professional save.

Jeff Samardzija (1-6) gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts. He also gave up three home runs against Arizona in his first start of the season on April 6.

              MARINERS 4, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nelson Cruz greeted reliever Jacob Turner (2-3) a three-run homer in the sixth inning that overturned a 2-0 deficit, and Seattle stopped a five-game losing streak.

Ariel Miranda (4-2) allowed two runs, three hits and three walks in five innings. Edwin Diaz, Seattle's sixth pitcher, threw a one-hit ninth that completed a six-hitter. Diaz got his first save since May 9 and has eight in 10 chances overall.

              PIRATES 9, BRAVES 4

ATLANTA (AP) - Ivan Nova (5-3) allowed four runs and 10 hits in 8 1/3 innings, and Adam Frazier hit a three-run homer.

Pittsburgh pounded Bartolo Colon (2-5), who a day after his 44th birthday allowed seven runs and 10 hits in five innings. His ERA rose to 6.96.

              PHILLIES 2, ROCKIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tommy Joseph hit a tying home run in the seventh inning and a winning single against Scott Oberg (0-1) in the 11th after Michael Saunders' one-out double, stopping Colorado from a four-game sweep.

Jeanmar Gomez (3-1) pitched a hitless 11th is his return from a disabled list stint caused by an elbow injury. Philadelphia ended a five-game losing streak, winning for the fifth time in 25 games. Colorado, which has the NL's best record, had won four in a row.

              RAYS 4, ANGELS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Matt Andriese (5-1) allowed six hits over eight innings, Colby Rasmus drove in four runs and Tampa Bay salvaged a four-game split.

Tommy Hunter got three outs to complete a six-hitter.

Daniel Wright (0-1), recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill in for the injured Alex Meyer, allowed four runs - two earned - and six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

              PADRES 4, METS 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Dinelson Lamet overpowered the Mets in his major league debut, New York's Rafael Montero labored on short notice and San Diego won on a rainy night.

Scattered showers soaked Queens all day, and thunderstorms were forecast for midgame, although heavy rain never came. Mets manager Terry Collins pushed back scheduled starter Jacob deGrom to try avoiding an abbreviated outing, instead telling Montero around 3:45 p.m. that he'd start the 7:10 p.m. contest.

Montero (0-4) allowed two runs during a 45-pitch first inning, including a bases-loaded walk to Matt Szczur. Montero threw 87 pitches over three innings, giving up three runs, five hits and three walks. His ERA rose to 8.24.

Lamet (1-0) cruised through five innings of one-run ball. The 24-year-old right-hander punched out eight and surrendered just three hits, including Lucas Duda's solo homer in the second. Brad Hand allowed a run but escaped a jam in the ninth for the second straight night, geting his second career save and second in two nights.

              RED SOX 6, RANGERS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Drew Pomeranz pitched six strong innings and tied his career high with 11 strikeouts to lift Boston past Texas.

Xander Bogaerts and Deven Marrero hit their first home runs of the season helping Boston to their fourth straight win.

Pomeranz (4-3) made it as far as six innings for the third time this season and beat Texas for the first time in nine career outings.

Elvis Andrus homered and Nomar Mazara had two hits and an RBI for Texas, which has lost four of five.

Andrew Benintendi and Mitch Moreland had RBI singles in the first inning as Boston got to Nick Martinez (1-3) early.

              ASTROS 7, TIGERS 6

HOUSTON (AP) - Jake Marisnick hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning for Houston's fourth homer of the game, lifting the Astros to a 7-6 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night.

The Tigers tied it 6-6 in the top of the eighth when Jose Iglesias doubled off reliever Luke Gregerson (2-1) to drive in Andrew Romine.

Marisnick's homer to deep center off Detroit reliever Alex Wilson (1-2) gave Houston the lead back. Ken Giles got the last three outs for his 13th save as the Astros won three of four from the Tigers.

Carlos Correa, Marwin Gonzalez and Juan Centeno all homered off Justin Verlander in Houston's five-run fourth that gave the Astros a 5-3 lead.

              • Friday’s six-pack

Some interesting pointspreads for Labor Day weekend college football games:

                — Wyoming @ Iowa (-11.5)

                — Florida vs Michigan (-3) (@ Cowboys Stadium)

                — Florida State vs Alabama (-4) (@ Atlanta)

                — West Virginia vs Virginia Tech (-5) (@ Redskins Stadium)

                — Texas A&M @ UCLA (-4)

                — Tennessee (-3) vs Georgia Tech (@ Atlanta)

                *********************************************

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with the long weekend here

                13) One of the tough parts about coaching in the NFL is when there is tension between the offense and defense; one side of the ball doesn’t carry its weight and the losing that results creates dissension and other problems.

Seattle Seahawks have been really good the last several years, but they also have lot of strong personalities; there are stories on the Interweb this spring of defensive players being unhappy with the offense, both players/coaches, since the Super Bowl loss to New England, when Seattle had the ball on the Patriots’ goal line at the end of the game but failed to score.

Its going to take maturity from the players involved to soothe things; the Seahawks’ window is closing- they have lot of veteran guys. Will be interesting to follow that this fall, especially if they bring Colin Kaepernick in as a backup QB.

                12) South Point Casino has one of the best sportsbooks in Las Vegas; they posted odds Thursday for Week 1 of college football, which is Labor Day weekend. With game limits at $1,000 a game, they had $70,000 in action in the first two hours the lines were posted.

                11) College basketball teams are allowed to take one overseas trip in the offseason every four years. Among the teams taking overseas trips this summer: Arizona State, Butler, Oklahoma, TCU and Kansas. These trips really help, as far as improving team chemistry and also the ten practices teams can have before the trip.

                10) Cavaliers 135, Celtics 102— Cleveland’s 75 first half points were the most first half points in any NBA playoff game since Dallas had 83 against the Kings in a 2003 game.

The NBA has a problem when Charles Barkley is on TV, saying he is going back to his hotel to watch the hockey game on TV, instead of the NBA game.

                9) David Price will make his 2017 debut for the Red Sox Monday afternoon, against the White Sox in Chicago. Price is in the second year of a 7-year, $217M contract; he has had problems with elbow/forearm inflammation.

                8) Thursday was Ryan Braun’s 10th anniversary as a big leaguer, and since his whole career has been with Milwaukee, that makes him a 10-and-5 man; Brewers can’t trade him now without his consent. (Braun left Thursday night’s game with a pulled calf muscle.)

                7) In case you were wondering, Cardinals’ WR Mel Gray (14), Redskins’ WR Charley Taylor (13) have scored the most TD’s against the Dallas Cowboys.

                6) Astros’ reliever Jordan Jankowski made his MLB debut against Detroit this week; his wife’s name is also Jordan Jankowski- she is pregnant. Mrs Jankowski was openly sobbing in the stands as her husband was making his debut- tears of joy, I’m assuming. Always good to see happy people.

                5) Baseball season is 54 days old; Dodgers have already put 20 players on the DL.

                4) Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen seems like a good guy; he was on Paul Finebaum’s show on EPSNU Thursday, which was at a golf course where it was pouring rain.

Without missing a beat, Mullen looks at the rain and says: “I’d play thru. I don’t think the heavy stuff is going to come down for a while”, a direct quote from Bill Murray in Caddyshack.

You think Nick Saban could rattle off a Caddyshack quote like that? I think not.

                3) Mets have eight players on the DL; Terry Collins has apparently stopped talking to the media about injured players and their conditions— has the front office told him to stop? If so, postgame talks will either be really contentious or really short— there isn’t a whole lot else to talk about with this team, which at this point isn’t a good team.

                2) Padres 4, Mets 3— More incompetence from the Mets, who lose here to a pitcher named LaMet; they scratched Jacob deGrom from his start Thursday because it might rain— it did rain some, but the game was never even delayed and the Mets lost to the woeful Padres. Now deGrom has a tougher task Friday, pitching at Pittsburgh. Geniuses.

                1) For me, the worst part of being an Oakland A’s fan is that this time of year, with the A’s drifting near the bottom of the standings at 21-25, speculation has started about their trading their better players for prospects, to restock their farm system.

ESPN’s Buster Olney writes about this stuff a lot this time of year; I wish I had a dollar every time he wrote “A’s to trade Barry Zito to New York”, which never happened, but now he comes out with his “Sonny Gray is on the trading block” story Thursday. Oy.

Have some imagination; write about trades AFTER they happen. Find some other interesting stuff to write about. Small market fans are tired of having their pockets picked every summer, whether in real life or by lazy sportswriters looking for an easy story to write.

Alex Wood of the Los Angeles Dodgers take a 5-0 record and 1.88 ERA into Friday night's series opener against the Chicago Cubs. Wood has pitched 18 1/3 straight scoreless innings. He will be opposed by Jake Arrieta (5-4), who gave up one unearned run in six innings in his last start after a string of sub-par outings when he gave up 21 earned runs over 26 innings.

                    HE'S BACK

Aaron Nola (2-1) is slated to start Philadelphia's series opener against Cincinnati, his second appearance start since returning from a trip to the disabled list caused by a back injury. Nola lost Sunday at Pittsburgh despite allowing one run in seven innings.

                    • Friday's Diamond Notes
                      May 26, 2017

Hottest team: Diamondbacks (9-1 last 10)

Arizona began its road trip on a solid note by shutting out Milwaukee, 4-0 on Thursday to capitalize off a three-game home sweep of the White Sox. The D-backs moved within one game of the Rockies for first place in the NL West, while improving to 5-0 in its last five road series openers. For the third time in the last four road games, Arizona has held its opponent to one run or less, as southpaw Robbie Ray struck out nine batters and gave up two hits in seven innings against the Brewers.

Zack Godley (not Greinke) looks to keep the D-backs hissing on Friday as the right-hander is coming off three straight quality starts. Godley is winless in his lone road start, falling to the Padres last Sunday in a 5-1 defeat by allowing three earned runs in seven innings of work. Arizona has compiled a 1-3 record in Game 2’s of a road series this season after winning the opener.

Coldest team: Orioles (3-7 last 10)

Baltimore has gone backwards lately since a wild 13-11 in 13 innings at Detroit on May 16. The O’s have dropped six of their last eight games, while getting swept at home in a three-game set by the surprising Twins. In three losses during this current four-game skid, Baltimore has scored three runs or less, while trying to improve on a 1-6 record in their last seven games away from Camden Yards. Things don’t get easier on Friday with a trip to Houston to face the AL West-leading Astros, as Baltimore posted a 1-6 mark against Houston in 2016.

Hottest pitcher: Alex Wood, Dodgers (5-0, 1.88 ERA)

On a staff spearheaded by Cy Young favorite Clayton Kershaw, another Dodgers’ southpaw is making waves on the mound. Wood has won four consecutive decisions, while not allowing a run in his last three starts, a total of 18.1 innings. Prior to a 7-2 victory over Miami his last time out, Wood posted consecutive double-digit strikeout performances against the Pirates and Rockies. Wood faces the Cubs in an NLCS rematch in the series opener as the former Brave allowed three hits and two runs in 3.2 innings of a 3-2 defeat at Wrigley Field last month.

Coldest pitcher: Ian Kennedy, Royals (0-4, 4.06 ERA)

The right-hander won 11 games in his first season in Kansas City in 2016, but is winless so far through seven starts in 2017. To make matters worse, the Royals own a dreadful 1-6 record when Kennedy takes the mound, including an 0-3 record away from Kansas City. The Royals travel to Cleveland on Friday as Kennedy dropped each of his last three decisions to the Indians last season after winning the first two starts.

Biggest OVER run: Red Sox (10-2 last 12)

Even though Boston finished UNDER the total in Thursday’s victory over Texas to pull off the three-game home sweep, the Red Sox are still riding a massive OVER run. The offense posted six runs on Thursday after scoring 20 runs in the first two wins against the Rangers, while putting up 12 runs in the series finale at Oakland this past Sunday. Boston is currently on a 6-1 OVER stretch at Fenway Park, as the Mariners invade Beantown. Seattle had scored one run in five straight games before a mini-explosion in Thursday’s 4-2 victory at Washington, while five of seven matchups against Boston last season went UNDER the total.

Biggest UNDER run: Rays (5-0 last five)

All four games of Tampa Bay’s series against Los Angeles finished UNDER the total, as the Rays allowed a total of two runs in the final two victories. Prior to this 5-0 UNDER run, Tampa Bay eclipsed the OVER in its previous eight games, including six straight OVERS away from Tropicana Field. The UNDER streak may come to an end on Friday even though staff ace Chris Archer heads to the mound. Archer has hit the OVER in seven of his 10 starts this season, as the Rays are 3-1 to the OVER in his four road outings with Tampa Bay heading to Minnesota.

Matchup to watch: Cubs vs. Dodgers

Los Angeles grabbed a 2-1 advantage over Chicago in the 2016 NLCS before the Cubs won the next three games to capture the pennant. The Cubs head out to Chavez Ravine for a three-game series as Chicago took two of three from Los Angeles at Wrigley Field in mid-April.

Chicago finished off a 7-2 homestand after grabbing the final three contests against San Francisco. 2015 Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta heads to the mound as the right-hander ended a two-game skid by beating Milwaukee in his last start, 13-6 as a -200 favorite. Arrieta scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run in six innings as he is winless in his last three starts on the highway.

The Dodgers continue their long homestand after taking a pair of series from the Marlins and Cardinals. Alex Wood’s credentials were mentioned above as the hottest pitcher taking the hill on Friday, as the Los Angeles left-hander is 3-0 in three starts at Dodger Stadium. Since getting traded to the Dodgers in 2015, Wood winless in three outings against the Cubs, while all three games finished UNDER the total.

Betcha didn’t know: The Blue Jays face the Rangers in a rematch of the 2016 ALDS as Toronto swept the three-game set from Texas. Toronto got off to a horrible start this season before climbing back to 21-26 as the Jays have dominated at home against American League opponents of late. The Jays have won eight of their last nine at home within the league, while Toronto is expected to activate the power hitters from the left side of their infield with Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki due to come off the disabled list.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-260) vs. Padres

Biggest public underdog: Cubs (+125) at Dodgers

Biggest line move: Blue Jays (-125 to -140) vs. Rangers

                      • MLB notebook: Nationals manager Baker to miss three games
                        May 25, 2017

Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker is scheduled to miss the three-game weekend series with the San Diego Padres due to the high school graduation of his son, Darren, in California. The series begins Friday at Nationals Park and is slated to end Sunday.

Baker's son graduates on Saturday and the veteran skipper will join the Nationals when they begin a series on Monday in San Francisco against the Giants. Baker grew up and still lives in northern California and he was the manager of the Giants from 1993 to 2002.

Nationals bench coach Chris Speier will fill in for Baker while he is gone.

--The Los Angeles Dodgers placed center fielder Joc Pederson on the seven-day concussion list two nights after he was involved in a scary collision with right fielder Yasiel Puig. The move was retroactive to May 24.

The Dodgers filled the roster spot by activating right-hander Kenta Maeda, the starter for Thursday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Maeda was on the 10-day disabled list because of a hamstring injury.

--The Los Angeles Angels recalled right-handed pitcher Daniel Wright from Triple-A Salt Lake after the team optioned right-hander Brooks Pounders to Salt Late following Wednesday night's game.

Wright, 26, is the scheduled starter for Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He is making a spot start in place of righty Alex Meyer, who the Angels placed on the 10-day disabled list with back spasms on Wednesday.

                        • Boston's Price set to make season debut Monday at White Sox
                          May 25, 2017

BOSTON (AP) Red Sox pitcher David Price is set to make his season debut for Boston on Monday at the Chicago White Sox.

The 31-year-old left-hander, starting the second season of a $217 million, seven-year contact, has been recovering from a strained pitching elbow.

''Excited, just to be back here,'' he said Thursday. ''There's not a better feeling. You can't replicate it anywhere else.

Price allowed nine runs - six earned - and 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings during a pair of injury rehabilitation starts at Triple-A Pawtucket. He struck out eight and walked two.

''A lot of pitches, in a short amount of time. I think that is more of a test to being healthy as opposed to going out there and throwing five or six (innings) in 90 pitches,'' he said. ''To do what I did in both of my rehab outings, I don't think you can do that if you're not healthy.''

Boston began the night with a 24-21 record.

''He's eager to get back to us and physically he feels great,'' Red Sox manager John Farrell said. ''His return to us will give us a definite boost but that's not to de-emphasize he needs to go out and perform.''

Farrell hopes Price's return has a trickle-down impact.

''It's not based solely on the name on the back of his jersey,'' Farrell said. ''Hopefully it allows us to even out some of the performances within the rotation.''
