The Yankees’ offense scored fewer than four runs for the first time in six games, while their five-game OVER streak came to an end. The Yankees host the Cardinals on Friday as the Bronx Bombers look to improve on an 11-2 mark in home series openers since last July.

Coldest team: Blue Jays (0-6 last six) vs. Orioles

Toronto’s offense has been downright dismal by scoring 23 runs in the first eight games. The Blue Jays plated only one run in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to the Orioles, the third loss to Baltimore this season. Unfortunately, Toronto’s pitching has kept them hanging around during this cold stretch by giving up three runs or fewer six times, but the Jays own a 1-5 mark in the favorite role this season.

The Orioles have scored just eight runs in three games against the Blue Jays this season, but Baltimore sits atop the AL East with a 6-2 record. Right-hander Aaron Sanchez posted a terrific 15-2 record last season with an ERA of 3.00 for Toronto, but he picked up a no-decision in his first start of the season at Tampa Bay in a 3-2 defeat.

Hottest pitcher: Kendall Graveman, Athletics (2-0, 2.08 ERA)

The A’s return home following a 3-3 road trip, which included a series victory at Kansas City. Graveman has been fantastic through two starts by scattering eights and three earned runs in 13 innings of work against the Angels and Rangers. The Oakland right-hander faces another AL West foe as the Astros head to the Coliseum as Graveman cashed in six of his eight starts in the home underdog role. The A’s split four starts made by Graveman last season against the Astros, but tossed seven innings in his lone home start last July in a 7-4 triumph.

Coldest pitcher: Masahiro Tanaka, Yankees (0-1, 11.74 ERA)

Tanaka is the ace of the Yankees’ staff, but has struggled out of the gate by giving up 14 hits and 10 earned runs in 7.2 innings of work against the Rays and Orioles. Both of those starts came away from the Bronx, as Tanaka simply dominated at home in 2016 with the Yankees posting a 13-2 record in his 15 outings. The Yankees have won all three home starts made by Tanaka against National League opponents as he is facing the Cardinals for the first time in his career.

Best OVER run: Braves (6-0 last six)

Atlanta opens up SunTrust Park following its first eight games on the highway. The Braves’ pitching staff has allowed at least four runs in seven of eight contests, but Atlanta has scored four runs or more in five consecutive games. In the last 13 home series openers at Turner Field in 2016, the Braves cashed the OVER 11 times, while scoring 24 runs in a three-game home sweep of the Padres last August. Atlanta starter Julio Teheran cashed the OVER in seven of his final nine home starts last season.

Best UNDER run: Brewers (6-2 last eight)

Milwaukee wasn’t expected to do much coming into this season, but the Brewers have split their first 10 games. The Brew Crew won its third straight contest on Thursday at Cincinnati, while allowing a total of four runs during this brief hot streak. Milwaukee’s pitching has been up and down through the opening two weeks, but the Brewers have received three straight quality outings from their starters.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks at Dodgers

A pair of former teammates and Cy Young winners take the mound at Chavez Ravine as Zack Greinke and Clayton Kershaw square off in the series opener. Arizona sits atop the NL West at 7-3 despite dropping two of three at San Francisco, while Los Angeles returns home from a 2-4 road trip looking to bust above the .500 mark.

Greinke picked up a no-decision in his first start against the Giants, 6-5 walk-off win as a +135 home underdog. However, the Arizona ace silenced Cleveland in his last outing by scattering five hits and allowing one earned run and striking out six in 6.2 innings of an 11-2 blowout last Saturday. In 2016, the D-backs posted an incredible 12-3 mark away from Chase Field when Greinke took the mound, but one of those losses came at Dodger Stadium in a 10-2 drubbing last September.

Kershaw dominated the Padres in the season opener, but the southpaw was taken deep three times in last Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at Colorado as a -200 road favorite. The Dodgers have won 11 of Kershaw’s previous 12 home outings since the start of last season, while striking out 11 Diamondbacks in a 3-2 triumph last June in his only outing against Arizona in 2016.

Betcha don’t know: Since June 2015, the Indians own a stellar 10-3 home record against the Tigers. In fact, Cleveland captured all six series openers against Detroit last season as the two division rivals hook up at Progressive Field. The Tigers have won six of their last seven road openers since last August with the only defeat coming at Cleveland.

Biggest public favorite: Nationals (-200) vs. Phillies

Biggest public underdog: Rays (+115) at Red Sox

Biggest line move: Astros (-130 to -145) at Athletics

            Weekend Outlook
            April 14, 2017

            Milwaukee (5-5) at Cincinnati (7-3)
Scheduled rotation: Milone vs. Feldman, Davies vs. Finnegan, Peralta vs. TBA

Cincinnati has started the season winning seven of its first 10 games aided by a vastly improved pitching staff featuring a rookie phenom and most of all the club is believing in themselves. They were expected by Las Vegas sports books to win only 69.5 games, but here they are in first-place at home against the Brewers this weekend.

Will it last? Probably not, but I hope it does. These are the type of stories that every baseball fan yearns for. The story of the underdog with Joey Votto and a bunch of no-names staying ahead of the World Champion Cubs within the NL Central.

The Reds have done the impossible so far with its pitching which is ranked No. 3 with a 2.73 ERA. Rookie lefthander Amir Garrett has won both of his starts allowing two runs over 12.2 innings and his +300 return on investment leads baseball so far. The bullpen, which had a laughable 5.09 ERA last season currently has a 1.13 ERA and is holding opponents to a .163 batting average, both of which rank second in baseball.

Thursday night they lost to the Brewers, 5-1, to kick off a four game series after winning five of six on a road trip ending with a sweep at Pittsburgh. Bookmakers haven't done much of a ratings adjustment on the Reds yet as they opened the series a pick 'em before Thursday, which is basically calling the Brewers a favorite because they're the road team. The Westgate SuperBook isn't believing in miracles, either, with odds placed at 300-to-1 to win the World Series. .

Regardless of what may eventually happens, the Reds are still one of the most compelling stories of April so far.

Here's a look at a few of the series this week that will have my full attention:

Pittsburgh (3-6) at Chicago Cubs (6-3)
Scheduled rotation: Cole vs. Hendricks (-180), Glasnow vs. Arrieta, Taillon vs. Lester

The Pirates have lost four straight and will be playing in their third city in three days after losing a make-up game at Boston Thursday. It's sure not going to get any easier at Wrigley Field this weekend against a Cubs squad that has won four of its last five. The good news for the Pirates to kick off the series is that Gerrit Cole won his last start -- the Pirates last win -- and he's gone 8-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 12 career starts against the Cubs.

However, the bad news is that Friday he's facing Kyle Hendricks who won all three starts against Pittsburgh last season allowing one run over 19 innings. On Sunday, the Bucs will try to solve their lefty problem against Jon Lester. On the season they've lost all three games against lefthanders.

Arizona (7-3) at Los Angeles Dodgers (5-5)
Scheduled rotation: Greinke vs. Kershaw (-225), Corbin vs. Maeda, Walker vs TBA, Ray vs. McCarthy

Friday night features my first can't miss TV pitching match-up of the year between Zack Greinke and the first-place Diamondbacks visiting the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw. Last season through 10 games, Arizona was 3-7 with Greinke contributing mightily to the sluggish start in his first season after leaving the Dodgers. This season they're 7-3, but come off losing two of three at San Francisco in their first road trip.

They'll play four games through Monday. Last season the Dodgers won 12 of 19 games and beat Arizona in two of three that Greinke started. Even though Arizona's bats have cooled off on the road trip, they lead baseball with 55 runs scored and are second with a .283 batting average.

            Detroit (6-3) at Cleveland (4-5)
Scheduled rotation: Norris vs. Bauer (-140), Verlander vs. Kluber, Boyd vs. Carrasc
            o

The first-place Tigers will see if they can solve the Cleveland problem which is essentially why they missed the playoffs last season. The Indians went 14-4 last season against Detroit. But the scheduled has the Tigers set up nicely here as The Tribe comes in losing five of its last six, which included getting swept at Arizona last weekend. On Saturday the marquee match-up in baseball will be Justin Verlander vs. Corey Kluber. Verlander has been sensational with a 1.35 ERA in two starts -- both Detroit wins, but the Indians won all four Kluber starts against Detroit last season.

Los Angeles Angels (6-4) at Kansas City (3-6)
Scheduled rotation: Ramirez vs. Duffy (-150), Shoemaker vs. Karns, Skaggs vs. Kennedy

The cardiac Angels have dropped their last two games and are now tied for first-place in the A.L. West with Houston. Kansas City is dead last in the A.L. Central and have averaged only three rusn a game while batting .205 -- only Toronto's .190 is worse. The Royals halted a three-game skid on Thursday beating Oakland, 3-1. The bullpen was once the driving force for Kansas City success, but it's posted a 7.81 ERA through nine games so far. The Angels have been crushing the ball this season and have four regulars batting .316 or higher and three players with an on-base percentage over .405.

St. Louis (3-6) at New York Yankees (5-4)
Scheduled rotation: Wacha vs. Tanaka (-145), Martinez vs. Sabathia, Wainwright vs. Pineda

The Cardinals are sitting dead last in the NL Central with Pittsburgh and their bullpen is dead last in baseball with a 7.86 ERA and are the only team in baseball without a save. The Yankees come with their top three starters and will miss the Cardinals best starter so far, Mike Leake (0.60). Michael Wacha was impressive in his first start allowing one run over six innings in a Saturday win over Cincinnati. The Yankees started 1-4, but have won four straight and are now 3-0 at home.

They've also gone 'over' the total in five of their last six games. The starter to pick on in this series is Adam Wainwright on Sunday who has lost both of his starts allowing seven runs in nine innings of work.

              Greinke-Kershaw duel highlights Diamondbacks-Dodgers opener
              April 14, 2017

LOS ANGELES -- Good friends and former teammates square off Friday when the Arizona Diamondbacks open a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Former Dodger right-hander Zack Greinke (1-0, 2.31 ERA) will face Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw (1-1, 3.46 ERA) for the first time in the opening game at Dodger Stadium. Greinke pitched three seasons for the Dodgers before bolting to the Diamondbacks as a free agent last year.

Greinke has started the season well. In his last start, he limited the Cleveland Indians to a run on five hits, with six strikeouts and no walks, in 6 2/3 innings of an 11-2 romp last Saturday.

Greinke is 3-2 with a 3.80 ERA in seven career starts vs. the Dodgers. Last season, Greinke was 1-2 with a 5.33 ERA against the Dodgers. Los Angeles tagged him for six home runs in 17 2/3 innings, five of those occurring in a 10-2 win by the Dodgers last September.

Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager gave Greinke fits last season, going 5-for-8 with two home runs and four RBIs.

Greinke, obviously, will be intent on avoiding such a disaster. He also believes he needs to deliver a solid performance to beat Kershaw.

"He's so competitive that if I started taking it lightly, it would be a bad game plan," Greinke told MLB.com. "He has a great mindset. A great work ethic. He does everything as perfect as you'd want a pitcher to do."

Kershaw (1-1, 3.46) will attempt to regroup after being dealt a loss in his last start. Kershaw allowed four runs on eight hits in six innings in a 4-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Kershaw struck out six and did not issue a walk, but he served up back-to-back home runs for the first time in his career, to Mark Reynolds and Gerardo Parra.

Kershaw is 12-8 with a 2.75 ERA in 24 starts against the Diamondbacks. He has limited Arizona to a .228 batting average. However, center fielder A.J. Pollock has experienced some success against the left-hander, batting .292 with a pair of RBIs in 24 at-bats.

Kershaw isn't looking forward to the confrontation with Greinke.

"I'll just try and block it out," Kershaw told MLB.com. "It's not fun to pitch to people you know. I'm not good at separating that. I'm just going to have to focus and really think about it like he's another guy. Then the next day I can talk to him."

The Diamondbacks (7-3) are off to a strong start. They opened with six of seven wins at home before dropping two of three to the San Francisco Giants. Third baseman Jake Lamb has been the club's hottest hitter, batting .342 with two home runs and 10 RBIs. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt and right fielder David Peralta also have two homers.

The Dodgers (5-5) were 2-4 on their six-game trip. They capped it with a 4-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. In losing two of three to the Cubs, the Dodgers managed just four runs and stranded 26 runners.

Third baseman Justin Turner leads Los Angeles in batting with a .355 average. Yasiel Puig's three home runs are tops for the club while left fielder Andrew Toles and catcher Yasmani Grandal have gone deep twice.

Donaldson leaves game after aggravating sore right calf
                April 13, 2017

TORONTO (AP) Blue Jays slugger Josh Donaldson left Thursday's game against Baltimore in the fifth inning after aggravating the sore right calf that caused him to miss Tuesday's home opener.

Donaldson, who started at DH for the second straight game, was injured as he rounded first base on an RBI double off Baltimore's Kevin Gausman. Donaldson hobbled into second base and was immediately replaced by pinch runner Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

Donaldson left Sunday's game at Tampa Bay after running out a ground ball and, after Monday's off day, was held out of Tuesday's loss to Milwaukee. He's batting .310 with two homers and four RBIs.

The 2015 AL MVP, Donaldson also dealt with right calf soreness during spring training.

Toronto has lost five straight and is off to a franchise-worst 1-7 start.

                    • MLB roundup: Braves open new stadium with win
                      April 15, 2017

ATLANTA -- Ender Inciarte matched his homer total for all of last season with his third in two games and the Atlanta Braves made the opening of SunTrust Park a winning one Friday night vs. the San Diego Padres.

Inciarte, who had homered twice at Miami on Wednesday, connected for a two-run blast against San Diego reliever Craig Stammen in the sixth inning and the Braves defeated the Padres 5-2 before a sellout crowd of 41,149.

Julio Teheran (1-0) gave up five hits, walked four and hit a pair of batters, but allowed just two runs and helped himself at the plate with an RBI hit.

                      Tigers 7, Indians 6

CLEVELAND -- Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run home run and Daniel Norris pitched six shutout innings while allowing just two hits as Detroit beat slumping Cleveland.

Alex Avila also homered for the Tigers. The defending American League champion Indians have lost six of their last seven games and were outscored 41-20 in that span.

Trailing 7-1, going into the bottom of the ninth the Indians scored five runs, four coming on a grand slam by pinch hitter Lonnie Chisenhall off reliever Francisco Rodriguez, who then struck out Austin Jackson to end the game. Rodriguez picked up his fourth save

                      Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 1

LOS ANGELES -- Andrew Toles homered and Los Angeles defeated Arizona.

Clayton Kershaw allowed a run and four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in 8 1/3 innings to beat former teammate and Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke. Kershaw was two outs from a complete-game shutout before Chris Owings lined an RBI double in the ninth inning. Owings was 2-for-4 against Kershaw.

Toles hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth that capped the scoring for the Dodgers. Justin Turner had two RBIs and Adrian Gonzalez, Logan Forsythe and Yasiel Puig each drove in a run.

                      Giants 8, Rockies 2

SAN FRANCISCO -- Johnny Cueto benefited from an 11-hit attack to post his third straight win, helping San Francisco square its series with Colorado.

Chris Marrero and Brandon Crawford belted home runs for the Giants, who had been handcuffed by five Rockies pitchers in a 3-1 loss in the series opener on Thursday. The game featured a franchise-record-tying two balks on Colorado's Tyler Anderson and the ejection of Rockies manager Bud Black in the top of the fifth inning.

Cueto opened 3-0 in his first three starts for a second consecutive season by limiting the Rockies to six hits and two runs in seven innings. He walked one and struck out six. The veteran right-hander pitched with a lead from the time Marrero cracked his first major-league home run, a two-run shot in the second inning off Anderson (1-2).

                      Astros 7, A's 2

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Dallas Keuchel allowed one run in seven innings and Houston rolled past Oakland in the opener of a three-game series at Oakland Coliseum.

Keuchel, the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner, allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked two in his third start of the season. Norichicka Aoki hit his first home of the season and drove in two runs for the Astros, who defeated Oakland for the eighth straight time. Jose Altuve went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two walks. Brian McCann went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Khris Davis hit his fifth homer of the season for the A's and Trevor Plouffe hit his first.

                      Mariners 2, Rangers 1

SEATTLE -- Mitch Haniger's go-ahead home run in the seventh inning was changed to a go-ahead single, but that was enough to lift Seattle over Texas on a night when veteran Felix Hernandez was back at the top of his game.

Haniger drove in the winner despite an overturned call that took away a three-run homer in the seventh. Nelson Cruz added a solo home run, his first of the season.

Hernandez allowed one run and six hits in 7 1/3 innings for his first win of the year.

                      Royals 7, Angels 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas each homered and drove in two runs as Kansas City topped Los Angeles.

Perez had a sacrifice fly in the third inning and homered to right-center in the sixth off reliever Deolis Guerra, who was just brought up from the minors.

Left-hander Danny Duffy (2-0) picked up the victory, holding the Angels to one run and three hits over six innings while walking two and striking out six. Duffy is undefeated in 16 straight home starts.

                      Marlins 3, Mets 2

MIAMI -- J.T. Realmuto hit a two-out, walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning as Miami napped New York's five-game win streak.

Dee Gordon and Miguel Rojas each had three hits for Miami. Rojas also scored the winning run, racing home from first when Realmuto hit a 3-2 pitch to right-center field.

The Mets got a homer from Lucas Duda, his fourth of the season. New York has homered in 10 straight games and has hit 17 long balls in the past six contests.

                      Rays 10, Red Sox 5

BOSTON -- Tampa Bay hammered Rick Porcello for a career-worst four home runs, helping Chris Archer end an 11-game losing streak against Boston.

Archer, 9-19 last year, beat the Red Sox to start his career back in 2012 but was 0-11 since, the longest string of futility against Boston since Floyd Bannister's 12-game streak from 1982-86.

But homers by Shane Peterson, in his first at-bat as a Ray, Logan Morrison (a grand slam), Brad Miller and Steven Souza Jr., staked Archer to an 8-0.

                      Orioles 6, Blue Jays 4

TORONTO -- Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop, J.J. Hardy and Seth Smith homered, Wade Miley pitched six effective innings and Baltimore defeated Toronto.

It was the seventh straight loss for the Blue Jays (1-9), who are off to the worst start in franchise history.

Toronto starter Aaron Sanchez allowed three home runs and seven hits overall in surrendering five runs in 5 1/3 innings.

                      Yankees 4, Cardinals 3

NEW YORK -- Masahiro Tanaka recovered from allowing an early home run and pitched into the seventh inning as New York ran its winning streak to five games.

Tanaka lowered his ERA from 11.74 to 8.36 by allowing three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He withstood several hard outs, struck out five and walked two in a 103-pitch outing.

Starlin Castro hit a two-run homer and Austin Romine had a solo homer for the Yankees, who are 4-0 at home for the first time since 2003. Jacoby Ellsbury scored the other run on an error after advancing to third on a Chase Headley double.

                      Pirates 4, Cubs 2

CHICAGO -- David Freese went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Francisco Cervelli doubled in two more as Pittsburgh snapped a six-game Wrigley Field losing streak.

Pirates starter Gerrit Cole (1-1) worked six innings in his third start and gave up just two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five.

Chicago right-hander Kyle Hendricks (1-1) took the loss for the Cubs.

                      Nationals 3, Phillies 2

WASHINGTON -- -- Daniel Murphy hit a double to left off Jeanmar Gomez in the bottom of the 10th as Washington beat Philadelphia.

His hit scored Bryce Harper, who led off with a single and then scored on the hit down the left field line.

The Nationals have now won 16 of the last 23 games against the Phillies. The Phillies have lost four in a row after taking two of three from Washington last weekend at home.

                      White Sox 2, Twins 1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Matt Davidson hit an opposite-field home run in the seventh inning and rookie Dylan Covey was steady in his major league debut for Chicago.

Covey, a 25-year-old right-hander, held the Twins to one run through 5 1/3 innings and Dan Jennings (1-0) came in to get the victory in relief as the White Sox won their third straight game.

David Robertson picked up his second save in as many chances.

                      Brewers 10, Reds 4

CINCINNATI -- Manny Pina had a career-high four hits, including two doubles, and Eric Thames hit a two-run homer to lift Milwaukee to its fourth straight win, a victory over Cincinnati at Great American Ball Park.

The Brewers had five stolen bases in five attempts, including three by Jonathan Villar, and also went 6-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Joey Votto and Zack Cozart homered for the Reds.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

                        13) Somehow, someway, Phil Jackson gets two more years to run the Knicks, despite an 80-166 record that screams out that Jackson has no clue how to run an NBA franchise. At $12M a year, the least Jackson could’ve done was get rid of of Carmelo Anthony, who is getting older and did not try much on defense, even when he was young.

                        12) We talked briefly yesterday about “exit meetings” with players after a season; apparently Kristaps Porzingis, one of the Knicks’ few bright spots, skipped his exit meeting with the club because of “his displeasure with the “dysfunction” and “drama” that has enveloped the franchise”, according to ESPN.com.

                        11) Was surprised to see that major league umpire Joe West is only 64 years old; he’s been a big league umpire since 1976, which means he made it to the majors at age 23.

                        10) Calgary Flames have to win at least one game in Anaheim to win their opening round playoff series; problem is, the Flames have now lost 28 games in a row in Anaheim- their last win in the Pond was in a 2006 playoff game. No bueno.

                        9) John Daly played in Darius Rucker’s charity golf tournament this week, which raises money for kids in South Carolina; at one point. he used a full beer can as a tee, then chugged the beer after he hit the ball off the top of the can, all while playing barefoot. Alrighty then.

                        8) Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred is open to the idea of geographic realignment, but Bud Selig was also in favor of that— it just never appealed to anyone else.

Geographic realignment would reduce travel costs and create more games with local rivalries, but then, no more American/National Leagues. I’d be OK either way— what do you do with the DH? (hopefully, get rid of it)

                        7) If you like obscure trivia, Ender Inciarte got the first hit in the new SunTrust Stadium in Atlanta.

                        6) Mets are just third team in history (’83 Brewers, ’03 Rockies) to win consecutive games when they gave up a grand slam in both games- Mikael Franco hit one against them Wednesday, Marcell Ozuna Thursday.

                        5) Mets beat the Miami Marlins in 16 innings Thursday night, which drained both bullpens. Marlins’ reliever Nick Wittgren threw three scoreless innings, but because he has options left and needed a couple days off anyway, he was sent back to AAA, not the best reward for pitching well, but he’ll be back in the majors soon.

                        4) Colorado pitcher Jon Gray has a stress fracture in his foot, will miss at least a month.

                        3) When Hall of Fame baseball player Rod Carew received a heart transplant in December, he got the heart of the late Konrad Reuland, who played tight end for the Baltimore Ravens before he passed away at age 29 after having a brain aneurysm.

                        2) Seattle Mariners sell toasted grasshoppers at their concession stands- they sold 901 orders of the insects over the first three home games. The grasshoppers are toasted in a chili lime salt and come in a four-ounce cup for $4.

The team called in an emergency order so that they last throughout this weekend; they’re also imposing a per-game order limit for the rest of the season.

There is no way in hell I would eat grasshoppers…….ever.

1— A very courageous 10-year old boy threw out the first pitch at the Dodgers’ game last night; the young man is the first person to receive a double hand transplant. Zion Harvey also lost both his legs below the knees as a result of a virus he had at age 2.
