St. Louis' Piscotty taken out after being hit in head
    April 4, 2017

ST. LOUIS (AP) St. Louis outfielder Stephen Piscotty has left the Cardinals' game against the Cubs after he was hit in the head by a ball while sliding into home.

Piscotty departed in the fifth inning with a head contusion, and the team says he will be evaluated again on Wednesday.

Piscotty reached when he was hit by a pitch from Jake Arrieta. He was hit again by catcher Willson Contreras' throw when he stole second.

Piscotty then scored from second on Kolten Wong's infield hit to the right side of the mound. Cubs second baseman Javier Baez threw home, but the ball went off Piscotty's head.

Piscotty, who agreed to a $33.5 million, six-year contract a day earlier, was down on the field for several minutes after being hit Tuesday night. He eventually walked off the field.

Rain postpones Tigers at White Sox game to May
        April 5, 2017

CHICAGO (AP) Rain has forced the postponement of Wednesday's game between the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers.

The game will be made up on Friday, May 26 as part of a doubleheader.

Rain had also postponed Monday's season-opener for the two teams. A day later, Justin Verlander struck out 10 to match the most by a Detroit pitcher on opening day since Mickey Lolich in 1970, and the Tigers backed him with three home runs in a 6-3 victory.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Francisco Lindor hit a go-ahead grand slam off closer Sam Dyson in the ninth inning and the defending AL champion Cleveland Indians completed a season-opening sweep with a 9-6 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.

Lindor's first career slam and second homer of the game came after he put the Rangers ahead in the fifth when the shortstop misjudged Joey Gallo's speed, couldn't beat the slugger to second base on an attempted two-out force play and allowed two runs to score on a throwing error.

Dyson (0-2) loaded the bases and walked in a run before Lindor's homer down the right field line during a five-run Cleveland ninth. Dyson blew his first save after giving up three runs in a tie game in an 8-5 loss on opening day. He has allowed eight runs in one inning for the defending AL West champs.

The switch-hitting Lindor homered from both sides and had a career-high five RBIs.

Shawn Armstrong (1-0) struck out the only hitter he faced, Jonathan Lucroy, for his first major league win. Bryan Shaw pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.

              RED SOX 3, PIRATES 0, 12 INNINGS

BOSTON (AP) - Sandy Leon hit a three-run homer in the 12th inning - his third hit of the game - and Chris Sale pitched seven dominant innings in his Boston debut.

Leon also doubled in the third inning but got thrown out at the plate after running through third base coach Brian Butterfield's stop sign. It was scoreless into the bottom of the 12th, when Antonio Bastardo (0-1) walked Jackie Bradley Jr. and Pablo Sandoval with one out.

Leon followed with a drive over the Green Monster to end a cold night for the Red Sox, who also beat Pittsburgh in the season opener on Monday.

Joe Kelly (1-0), the sixth Red Sox pitcher, earned the victory with two innings of one-hit relief.

              BRAVES 3, METS 1, 12 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Bartolo Colon drew all sorts of nods, taps and tributes in his return to Citi Field during a sharp debut for Atlanta, and Matt Kemp's third double of the game in the 12th inning led the Braves over New York.

Kemp's two-out, bases-loaded liner off Rafael Montero (0-1) gave Atlanta its first win of the season after losing on opening day. Jim Johnson (1-0) worked two scoreless innings.

Pitching a day after the 20th anniversary of his major league debut, and now just more than a month shy of turning 44, Colon was as nifty as ever. He tossed two-hit ball - including a home run by Jay Bruce - for six innings, striking out six and walking one.

Jacob deGrom threw six shutout innings for the Mets.

              ORIOLES 3, BLUE JAYS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Dylan Bundy struck out eight over seven impressive innings, and Baltimore used home runs by Adam Jones and Chris Davis to beat Toronto.

Making his 15th career start, Bundy (1-0) allowed one run and four hits. The 2011 first-round draft pick did not issue a walk and retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced.

Brad Brach pitched the eighth and Zach Britton got three outs to earn his first save and seal the two-game sweep. After Toronto loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, Britton got former Oriole Steve Pearce to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play.

Jones hit a two-run drive in the third inning and Davis added a solo shot in the fourth. Both homers were off J.A. Happ, who went 20-4 last year - including 2-0 against the Orioles.

Happ (0-1) struck out nine in seven innings. The left-hander gave up five hits and walked none.

              NATIONALS 6, MARLINS 4

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bryce Harper had two RBIs and a nice ninth-inning catch, Ryan Zimmerman homered and Tanner Roark recovered from a shaky start to go six innings, leading Washington past Miami.

Roark (1-0) allowed two runs in the first inning, then hit two men and threw a wild pitch in the second, but he wound up retiring 13 of the last 14 batters he faced.

The reliever who replaced him to begin the seventh, Enny Romero, plunked Derek Dietrich, which led to some jawing between the two and the ejection of Marlins manager Don Mattingly. Dietrich also was hit by Roark.

Blake Treinen pitched the ninth for his second save.

Zimmerman's opposite-field shot in the second off a high fastball from Dan Straily (0-1) put Washington on the board.

              REDS 2, PHILLIES 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Brandon Finnegan allowed only one hit in seven innings, retiring the last 19 batters he faced, and Joey Votto homered for his first hit of the season, sending Cincinnati over Philadelphia.

The start of the game was delayed 50 minutes because of storms. The middle innings were played through a steady rain that worked to the pitchers' favor.

Finnegan (1-0) allowed a walk in the first inning and Maikel Franco's single to center. He then retired 19 straight, fanning nine of them, and threw 88 pitches in all.

Raisel Iglesias gave up an infield single before completing the four-hitter for his first save.

Votto led off the seventh with a home run off Jerad Eickhoff (0-1).

              RAYS 4, YANKEES 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Corey Dickerson homered and drove in two runs to lead Tampa Bay over New York.

Alex Cobb (1-0) pitched into the sixth inning, continuing his comeback from Tommy John surgery that sidelined him most of the past two seasons. Building on five starts he made late last year, the right-hander allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. Alex Colome allowed two hits but completed an inning for his second save.

Michael Pineda (0-1) allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings for New York.

              BREWERS 6, ROCKIES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Thames, Travis Shaw and Jonathan Villar each homered, Wily Peralta pitched five effective innings and Milwaukee beat Colorado.

Thames hit a 3-1 pitch 450 feet to deep center and Shaw teed off on a 1-0 pitch for a two-run homer job off Tyler Chatwood (0-1) in the fourth.

Peralta (1-0) allowed three hits over five innings.

              TWINS 9, ROYALS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Eduardo Escobar homered and drove in four runs and Miguel Sano added a bases-loaded triple to lead Minnesota over Kansas City.

Hector Santiago (1-0) gave up one run and four hits and struck out four in five innings for the Twins. After starting last season 0-9 to set the stage for a miserable 103-loss season, the Twins are 2-0 for the first time since 2007.

Ian Kennedy (0-1) gave up three runs and three hits with five strikeouts and five walks in five innings for Kansas City. Paulo Orlando drove in the lone run for the Royals, who walked nine Twins batters on the day.

LEADING OFF: Stroman coming off WBC MVP; Harvey, Tebow debut
                April 5, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Thursday:

                HEAD START

Marcus Stroman makes his season debut for Toronto after winning MVP honors with Team USA at the World Baseball Classic last month. Stroman was 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA in three starts for the United States, including six dominant innings during an 8-0 win over Puerto Rico in the championship game. After missing most of 2015 with a knee injury, Stroman threw 204 innings for the Blue Jays last year. He'll try to begin another workhorse season when winless Toronto opens a four-game series at Tampa Bay.

                APRIL SHOWERS

The Tigers and White Sox are hoping to avoid another postponement, but more rain is in the Chicago forecast. The AL Central rivals have been rained out twice this week, including Monday's scheduled opener, and could end the four-game series with only one in the books. Bad weather could also cause delays or postponements for Philadelphia at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Boston, Miami at Washington, the Los Angeles Angels at Oakland, and Atlanta at the New York Mets.

                MIRROR IMAGE

Matt Harvey makes his first start for the Mets since July 4 last year. The former ace went 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA in 2016 before having season-ending surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, which resulted in the removal of a rib. Opposing him on the mound will be another pitcher who had an operation for that unusual condition a few years back. Veteran left-hander Jaime Garcia makes his Atlanta Braves debut at Citi Field, weather permitting.

                ROOKIE BECOMES A ROOKIE

Right-hander Rookie Davis - one of the players the Reds got from the Yankees for closer Aroldis Chapman in 2015 - makes his major league debut against the Phillies. Davis got his distinctive nickname from his father, who hoped he'd become a major league player. His actual name: William Theron Davis III.

                TEBOW TIME

Tim Tebow makes his regular-season debut as a Mets minor leaguer, starting in left field for the host Columbia Fireflies against Augusta in the Class A South Atlantic League. The former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner hit .148 in spring training.

                  Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the 2018 college basketball championship:

                  10-1— Kentucky, Louisville, Duke

12-1— Kansas, North Carolina, Villanova, Gonzaga

                  15-1— Arizona

20-1— Michigan, Indiana, Wichita St, Florida, Michigan St

                  25-1— West Virginia, Butler, UCLA

                  30-1— Virginia

                  **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                  13) Dustin Johnson fell down a flight of stairs Wednesday, is a ???? for The Masters today, which wreaked havoc with odds here in Las Vegas, and also in my golf pool. Hope he is OK; Wednesday was a rainy day in Augusta; otherwise Johnson would’ve been at the Par 3 tournament they usually have the day before the tournament starts.

                  12) People who paid to see the Par 3 tournament (some as much as $1,800) were out of luck Wednesday. I’m assuming they gave out refunds, but I couldn’t find anything that said one way or the other if that happened.

                  11) Del Mar Deli by the SouthPoint sports book has superior pizza; they also have Dr Brown’s soda, which isn’t easy to find. If you’re looking for an excellent place to stay in Las Vegas that is a little more casual than some places, SouthPoint would be a great choice.

This weekend: bowling tournaments and a cheerleading competition are here. Oy.

                  10) Akron hired former Ohio U/Illinois coach John Grace to replace Keith Dambrot, who is now the coach at Duquesne.

                  9) Memphis Tigers lost two of their top three scorers when the Lawson brothers bolted with their father to a school to be named- the dad was a program assistant. Lawsons were two of Memphis’ top three scorers, so their talent pool takes a big hit, but you get the idea reading between the lines that chemistry-wise, this could be addition by subtraction.

                  8) Cubs are batting their pitcher 8th again this spring, which is Joe Maddon playing mind games with his competitors. If he really thought this was a good idea, they would’ve done it during the playoffs- thats when you show your hand as to what your best strategy is.

Seriously, other teams batted their pitcher 8th last year and their managers basically didn’t have any good reason to do it, other than, “…well (Tony) LaRussa and Maddon did it.”

                  7) Rumors on the Interweb say Jeb Bush may buy the Miami Marlins; hey, it worked for his brother, who once owned the Texas Rangers before becoming President.

                  6) Cleveland’s Tristan Thompson didn’t play last night, missing his first NBA game since February 10, 2012, when he was a rookie- he had played in 447 consecutive games.

                  5) Last guy to win The Masters in his first try? Fuzzy Zoeller, in 1979.

                  4) Bartolo Colon made his MLB 20 years ago for Cleveland, against an Angels’ team managed by Terry Collins. Colon pitched against the Mets last nite, managed by Terry Collins.

                  3) Astros 5, Mariners 3 (13)— Seattle went to Houston, scored total of five runs in losing their first three games of the season. Mariners led 3-2 in 13th inning before George Springer hit a 3-run walk-off tater. If you had Seattle and the under (7.5), not your finest hour.

                  2) Masters prop bets: Which par-5 hole will yield the most birdies this weekend?
                  13th hole: 7-5, 15th hole: 2-1, 2nd hole: 2-1, 8th hole: 4-1.

1— Which par-3 hole will yield the most birdies?
                  16th hole: 2-7, 12th hole: 13-5, 6th hole: 14-5, 4th hole: 20-1.

Angels' Richards leaves with arm injury
                              April 6, 2017

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels right-hander Garrett Richards left the Wednesday game against the Oakland Athletics in the bottom of the fifth inning with an apparent injury to his pitching arm.

Richards missed the final 137 games last season with a partial tear of his ulnar collarteral ligament in his right elbow. He avoided Tommy John surgery and recovered using stem-cell treatments. He made his first start Wednesday since May 1.

Richards allowed no runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings against the A's. He left with runners on first and third with a 0-1 count on Matt Joyce.

An Angels trainer came to the mound to talk to Richards, and the pitcher quickly left the game.
