    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

    — Packers’ offensive line played 1,375 snaps together the last two years, the most of any combo in the NFL.

    — Wichita State hoop coach Gregg Marshall lost his mind a little up in Canada, where the Shockers are playing some exhibition games this week. He had to be restrained by several people after getting ejected.

    — Last three years, Falcons are 5-17 vs spread in games where the spread was 3 or less points.

    — Mariners 6, Tigers 5 (15)– Game ended at 3am here in the east.

    — Arizona Cardinals are 0-6 vs spread in last six Monday night games.

    — Richard Nixon resigned as President 42 years ago this week; I was 14 at the time and had no idea how significant an event it was.

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Read an article about Shaquille O’Neal the other day; he is doing really well in his post-basketball life. Shaq owns 172 fast food restaurants, 150 car washes, 40 fitness centers (I’m not exaggerating)– plus he still makes $22M a year in endorsements. Wow.

    12) Atlanta Braves are much-improved under interim manager Brian Snitker; they’re 25-24 in their last 49 games. Would the Braves consider Snitker for the full-time manager’s gig next year, when they move into their new stadium?

    11) Brandon Crawford went 7-8 Monday night, just fifth player ever to get seven hits in a game; he had been 6-35 in his previous nine games combined.

    10) Former big league manager Jack McKeon was once an ACC basketball ref and was also invited to ref in the NBA, but turned the NBA down to work towards being a major league manager- he turned out to be a very good one.

    9) Tim Tebow wants to try out to play pro baseball; he turns 29 Sunday, so will be interesting if any big league teams give him a shot.

If I owned a small market club I’d be all in on this– what could it hurt, especially if I owned the minor league team he would go play for. Tebow would provide a big attendance bump for a minor league team, especially if that team is in the south.

    8) Chicago Bears already lost their starting center (Hrannis Grasu) for the year, a big loss. Centers are important.

    7) Baltimore Ravens had only six interceptions LY, least in NFL; Bet Online has posted an over/under of 12.5 for Raven interceptions this season.

    6) Houston Cougars QB Greg Ward Jr was only college football player LY to pass for 15+ TDs and also run for 15+ TDs. Cougars open with Oklahoma this year.

    5) Field mike for Miami Marlins’ TV games is so good, it picks up conversations around home plate, at least early in games before the crowd settles in. Sometimes they have to kill the mike, or apologize for comments the mike picks up.

    4) Speaking of the Marlins, it rained so hard in Miami the last two nights; they kept showing the lightning strikes outside the stadium. Without their dome, no way those games are played.

    3) Prince Fielder’s career is apparently over due to a neck injury; if he retires, he finishes with 319 homers, the exact same number his dad Cecil hit. Rangers still owe Fielder $96M for the next four years, by the way. Oy.

    2) Over the last eight years, 12 NFL teams had a turnover ratio of -16 or worse; those 12 teams won an average of 4.2 more games the following season, so that is good news for the Cowboys, who were -22 in turnovers LY. Dallas was 4-12 LY, so that would set them up for 8-8 or so this year.

    1) Over the last eight years, 12 NFL teams had a turnover ratio of +16 or better; those teams won an average of 2.92 less games the next year, but if you take the Patriots out (they had 4 of the 12 teams), that number rises to 3.88 less wins per year. Carolina (15-1) was +20 LY, which puts them at 11-5 or so this year.
