    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

    — For the first time since 2000, you can bet on the Olympics in Las Vegas, which gets the ticket windows open early.

    — Minnesota Vikings open their new domed stadium this year.

    — Home team lost the last six Cowboy-Eagle games.

    — Tampa Bay Rays lost their last 12 games where winning run scored after the sixth inning- they’re 10-23 for the year.

    — Twins 13, Indians 5– Minnesota scored 35 runs in beating Tribe the last three nights.

    — Buccaneers hired Dirk Koetter as head coach because he worked well with Jameis Winston, which means Illinois got its new head coach (Lovie Smith) for the same reason, seeing as the Bucs fired Smith so they could promote Koetter.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

    13) Most interesting part of NFL preseason games this summer will be how the Patriots play their QBs; Jimmy Garoppolo needs experience, but if he were to get hurt, New England is screwed for a QB for their first four games, with Brady suspended.

Brady won’t play until Week 5; does he need work this summer to be sharp when he comes back? Very unusual situation.

    12) New defensive coordinator for Tampa Bay is Mike Smith, who coached the Falcons from 2008-14. Schedule makers had their fun by putting Bucs in Atlanta in Week 1.

    11) Jerry Goff, father of Rams’ rookie QB Jared Goff, was a backup catcher in the major leagues- he hit 7 HRs in the big leagues, one of which was against Mike Harkey, whose son Cory is the Rams’ tight end. The elder Goff was 1-4 wth a walk in his career against Harkey.

    10) Rams-49ers Monday night game is interesting, seeing as neither side has announced their starting QB. I’m guessing Kaepernick will be the Niners’ QB, I’m hoping Case Keenum starts for the Rams– want them to break the rookie in slowly.

    9) Former Seahawks’ RB Michael Robinson, now on NFL Network, predicts Jacksonville will win the AFC South.

    8) Tim Mickelson (Phil’s brother) quit as Arizona State’s golf coach to become manager for pro golfer Jon Rahm, who played for him at ASU.

    7) Nike is out of the golf equipment business, but will stay on the footwear/apparel side of things. Nike’s golf sales were down 8% LY, so they jumped ship.

    6) Someone told Matt Kuchar yesterday that the Olympic golf tournament is an individual event, not a team event; he didn’t know. The Olympics are next week; how could he not know that?

    5) A 9-year old kid in Maryland is the recipient of the first double hand transplant; he threw out the first ball at the Orioles game Monday night. Science is an amazing thing.

    4) Royals’ pitcher Danny Duffy had an outstanding game Monday, striking out 16 Rays in the Trop. Duffy induced 35 misses on only 60 swings, the most misses induced by any pitcher in a game this season.

    3) Thoughts/prayers go out to Rams’ RB Tre Mason, who is having personal problems and hasn’t contacted the team since last season ended. Technically he is still on the roster but he has bigger issues than football right now.

    2) Would be an interesting reality show for MLB to imbed a camera crew with a big league team for a season, especially around the trade deadline, so we can see the inner workings of how teams make trades and decide when to promote their best prospects. It would be good television.

1– Odd story out of New England, where the Red Sox traded two prospects for reliever Brad Ziegler on July 9. One of the prospects is Luis Basabe, who was hitting .310 in A ball; he has a twin brother who is still in the Red Sox organization. There are rumors going around that Arizona screwed things up and traded for the wrong brother, they really wanted the other brother, who is said to be more talented. Stay tuned on that one.
